DAR chapter rededicates memorial to Allegany County pioneer
Photo provided Erica Mae Torrey will open her new cafe/bakery at the end of the month. Photo by Kathryn Ross Kimberly Marie Conroy, regent of the Catherine Schuyler Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, places a wreath on the memorial to Moses Van Campen during a rededication ceremony on May 1.
BY KATHRYN ROSS CANEADEA — Nearly 175 years after his death, the adventures of Revolutionary War soldier and early Allegany County settler Moses Van Campen are still remembered. Members of the Catharine Schuyler Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution gathered May 1 around a boulder in the Town of Caneadea on the old Council House Road. On the boulder is a bronze plaque honoring Van Campen, who died in 1849. The plaque was first placed by the DAR in 1908. The gathering was a rededication and part of the national organization’s program to Honor Our Patriots. DAR Regent Kimberly Marie Conroy told those gathered that on Aug. 25, 1908, the chapter dedicated the boulder and tablet marking the
one spot in Allegany County which played an important part in the Revolutionary War — namely the site of the old Indian Council House near Caneadea. Conroy said the site was also dedicated “to the memory and life of the great and brave man, Maj. Moses Van Campen.” She went on to explain that, at that site in 1782, members of the Seneca Nation, who sided with the British during the Revolution and had captured Van Campen, made him and his companions run a gauntlet — an approximately 495-foot narrow course between two lines of warriors and villagers who struck him with sticks and other implements. Legend claims that near the end of the line a large Seneca woman stepped out to face the 5-8 soldier, who, upon reach-
ing her, leaped into the air, planted both feet on her body thrusting her to the ground and completing the run. It is assumed that if the Senecas had known that they had captured Van Campen — an American officer from Pennsylvania who had taken part in the Sullivan campaign in 1779, in which many Seneca villages and crop stands were destroyed by a Continental army — he would have been killed. However, because of his anonymity, Van Campen was handed over to the British. After spending a year in a military prison on Montreal, Van Campen was paroled and he traveled back down the Hudson. While his Revolutionary War exploits were celebrated, it was Van Campen’s later life that made an impact on Alle-
gany County. After the war, Van Campen returned to Western New York, purchased land, and became the boon companion of tract owner Philip Church. (The DAR Chapter is named after Philip Church’s mother.) He eventually settled and built his home, which still stands, in Angelica. From the early 1790s, Van Campen was a landowner and surveyed more than 150,000 acres. He worked in roadbuilding, contracting and served as a constable, justice of the peace, judge, assessor, elections commissioner, county clerk and Presbyterian minister. Third time’s a charm: New bakery/cafe to open in Angelica BY KATHRYN ROSS
will open on Main Street in Angelica on May 26. The business will once again offer baked goods, but will also offer breakfast, lunch and dinner to her customers. “We don’t have anything like this in Angelica and we need something,” she said. Two years ago the very popular Canteen closed on Main Street — for Torrey, that was her wake-up call. “I always liked the space and location,” she said. “Tom and Lynn Murray, the building owners, did a beautiful job
ANGELICA — Entrepreneur Erica Mae Torrey is hoping that the third time is the charm as she prepares to open her third food service business in Allegany County. Torrey is well-known for her scrumptious baked goods — breads, cakes and cheesecakes. Her first business was on Main Street in Angelica, where she lives. While successful, it closed because of rental costs. Her second business was at the old Six S Golf Course, but was not well-known. Schools in Allegany county prep for May 18 budget votes
School budget votes, set for May 18, will be held at every school district in the region. If any budgets are defeated by voters — a relatively rare occurrence since the imposition of the state-mandated property tax cap in 2011 limiting large jumps in tax levies — district officials will decide whether or not to bring an amended budget to voters on June 15 or to adopt a contingency budget with mandated reductions in spending. If voters turn down the amended budget, a contingency budget would then go into place. Budget figures were provided by districts. Enrollment figures came from the state Department of Education’s annual Basic Educational Data System report on enrollment.t Here is a capsule look of what to expect on the ballots in Allegany County: •Bolivar-Richburg Total appropriations: $20.48 million, a 0.16% increase.
Tax levy: $2.71 million, no change. Additional proposals: The purchase of three buses for up to $415,000 from the capital reserve fund; A $38,246 allocation to the Genesee Library, an increase of $10,927.25. This year, ACCORD Corporation, a proud member of the Community Action Network, will also commemorate 49 years of service helping families throughout Allegany County. “Each May, during Community Action Month, we reflect on the impact ACCORD Corporation and our network has had on families,” said Lesley Gooch-Christman, executive director of ACCORD Corporation. “Last year alone, we served over 3,000 individuals in Allegany County and over 15 million across the country with immediately needed services such as shelter and food, and also long-term solutions like education and job placement.” Community Action Agencies serve 99% of all American counties with life-changing services to help families achieve financial stability. ATV riders want access to downtown Cuba BY KATHRYN ROSS
“First and foremost, this is not a trail system,” Tatham said. “The riders are not trying to use the town and village roads to joyride back and forth all day and night. The use of these roads is to let residents legally access other private trail systems and to purchase fuel and groceries when needed. Time restrictions will be set, and a sound-decibel limit will be set.” He explained that current laws require ATV and side-byside riders to stop at the end of one trail and trailer their vehicles to the next trailhead — often a very short distance. Tatham believes that Cuba, which is looking at the economic loss of the Great Lakes Cheese Company, would welcome the added revenue of ATV riders being able to access village stores and businesses. “There are plenty of side streets that would give us ac-
CUBA — All-terrain vehicle and side-by-side riders want to have access to stores and restaurants in downtown Cuba via designated side streets. “It would be nice to be able to pick up some snacks or take the family for ice cream from the trailhead,” said Ray Tatham, one of three brothers petitioning the town and village boards for action on the matter. ATVs are not licensed and therefore prohibited from operating on New York state highways — except where some villages have changed their local laws to allow access. Tatham is hoping that Cuba will follow the ways of Friendship, which recently changed its law, and other villages and towns such as Andover, Angelica, Hornellsville, Jasper, Whitesville and others.

cess to downtown businesses,” he noted. On May 8, Tatham and many of his fellow ATV enthusiasts set up a tent at Cuba Auto Sales, where they offered information to those interested about ATV’ing and what they are asking from the town and village. There was also a petition, which by noon already had 50 signatures. One of the men who signed, Mike Johnson of Cuba, has been riding ATVS for about 20 years. He said he signed because while it will not impact him, he believes ATVs should have access to the village. The petition asks the town and village to change the cur-
rent law. Supporters are also asked to attend the next village and town board meetings scheduled for 6 p.m. today in the village hall and 6:30 p.m. Tuesday for the town at the Palmer Opera House. “If you live in the village and get a water bill make sure to fill out the survey that was sent out with your bill,” Tatham said. “If you did not receive a survey let us know (by calling 585-610-8484) and we can get you set up with one.” For residents who do not live in the village or get a water bill the survey is on the Cuba Police Department’s Facebook page. The pro-ATV group is also on Facebook as the Why Leave Cuba Out group.

Rededicates continued from 1 praised the DAR saying, “I grew up across the (Genesee River) from here reading Arch Merrill’s books and Van Campen is one of the most interesting characters in the county’s history. We should thank the DAR for keeping his memory alive.” DAR Chaplin Deborah Snyder read a blessing and Conroy stepped to the boulder where she placed a wreath. The Van Campen memorial site is located on land belong-
ing to Karen Estabrook. After the ceremony she said that the memorial is often visited by hikers, bikers and others traveling the long road between Caneadea and Fillmore, which runs along the east side of the river. “Last year there was a fire and most of the firemen made their way over here to read the plaque on the boulder,” she said. Today the memory of Moses Van Campen is kept alive by history teacher Brendan Heaney who reenacts the life of the soldier, patriot and pioneer.
New Bakery continued from 1 renovating it. It has one of the biggest kitchens in the county. I realized that after my last two businesses, that if I didn’t do it now, I never would.” Torrey also works as a cook at the Allegany County Jail, so she will have the help of a partner, Eric Brodman, with the new business. Torrey moved to Allegany County from Tioga County, Pa. in 2006 with her children, Brennan, now 21; Logan, 18; Morgan, 16; and Harmony, 13. Torrey is self-taught, while also learning from her mother, who taught her to bake from

scratch. After she moved to Angelica she learned to bake breads from Sharon Taylor. She started business with a wholesale bakery, providing bread, jam and cheesecake to the Cuba Cheese Shop. Since closing her last business she’s received Agricultural and Markets certification for her kitchen and has provided goodies to the local farmers markets, filled private orders and supplied baked goods to Mac’s Meats. She plans to keep things simple at Country Sweets and Bakery. She’ll serve beverages, assorted pastries and breakfast sandwiches; homemade soup, bread bowls, subs, fresh burgers and wraps; homestyle dinner specials and a “garbage plate.” In the bakery she will offer artisan breads, cinnamon rolls, bagels, cakes, cookies and pies.
Stay safe when working in the yard this spring and summer A day spent working in the yard is an ideal way to pass the time on spring and summer afternoons. A pristine landscape can add value to a property and instill pride in homeowners who put a lot of thought and effort into their lawns and gardens. A sun-soaked day can make it easy to overlook potential threats when working in a lawn or garden. But safety precautions are of the utmost necessity when working in the yard, where the risk for serious injury is considerable. For example, the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons reports that, in 2016, more than 90,000 patients, including nearly 5,000 children,
were treated in hospital emergency rooms for lawn mowerrelated injuries. Lawn- and garden-related injuries can be prevented without going to great lengths. • Know your terrain before mowing. Knowing the terrain in your own yard can reduce the risk for accident or injury. This can be especially important when mowing the lawn with a riding mower. Adhere to manufacturersÕ recommendations regarding inclines to reduce tip-over accidents that can pin riders beneath the mower. Study hilly areas of the yard prior to mowing so you know which areas are safe to mow with a riding mower and which areas are best
mowed with a walk-behind mower. For greater control when using a walk-behind mower on an incline, mow parallel to the slope. •sunscreen. Sunburns may not require trips to the emergency room, but they can still be serious. In fact, the Skin Cancer Foundation notes that sunburn is a leading cause in the majority of cases of basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma and melanoma, which is the deadliest form of skin cancer. The SCF rec-
ommends applying sunscreen 30 minutes before going outside to allow the sunscreen to bond to your skin. Reapply sunscreen at least every two hours, and more often if youÕre sweating excessively. The SCF recommends broad spectrum sunscreens, which protect the skin from both UVA and UVB rays. Though a product with a sun protection factor (SPF) of at least 15 is acceptable when walking the dog or driving to work, the SCF advises using a product

“I want to keep simple, but I also want to have a variety of dishes,” she said. “I want to keep it friendly for families.” Torrey plans to use local products to make her dishes. Specifically, she plans to incorporate local maple syrup in milk shakes and other dishes. She will also fill special orders and she hopes to be able to eventually offer delivery services. Orders may be arranged at countrysweetscafe@ yahoo.com. “We need something more here in Angelica and I’m hoping that my third time in business is my charm,” Torrey said. Home & Garden How to garden from a wheelchair
Home & Garden continued from 7 pruning tall trees or performing any tasks that require a ladder. The Orthopedic Institute of Pennsylvania reports that more than 164,000 people are injured each year falling off a ladder. Ask a significant other or neighbor to hold the ladder in place while you climb up to reduce your risk of falling. If cutting large branches, cut them piecemeal to reduce the risk of being injured by heavy falling branches. ¥ Inspect the property for insect hives. The OIP notes that the most common insect stings in spring come from bees, wasps and hornets. Homeowners who are not careful can inadvertently come across hives when doing spring cleanup, making them vulnerable to bites and stings. That can be very dangerous
for anyone, and especially so for people with a history of allergic reactions to insect bites or stings. Inspect areas where you'll be working to make sure insects haven't put down roots in your property. If you discover any hives and are hesitant to remove them on your own, contact a local landscaping firm. Lawn and garden accidents and injuries can be serious. Thankfully, accidents and injuries are easily prevented when homeowners take a few simple safety precautions while tending to their lawns and gardens. Adhere to manufacturers recommendations regarding inclines to reduce tip-over accidents that can pin riders beneath the mower. Study hilly areas of the yard prior to mowing so you know which areas are safe to mow with a riding mower and which areas are best mowed with a walkbehind mower. For greater control when using a walkbehind mower on an incline, mow parallel to the slope.
Gardening is a wonderful activity that people from all walks of life enjoy. A garden full of fresh fruits and vegetables and/or beautiful blooms can instill a sense of pride in gardeners and turn their backyards into colorful, peaceful respites. Anyone with the will to do so can plant their own garden, and that includes people who are confined to wheelchairs. Gardening from a wheelchair may present some unique challenges, but such obstacles are no reason for wheelchairbound gardening enthusiasts to steer clear of this rewarding activity. In recognition of the challenges of gardening from a wheelchair, the Christopher & Dana Reeve Foundation offers the following tips to wheelchair-bound gardening enthusiasts. • Match the garden to your abilities. The Reeve Founda-
tion notes that trying to push beyond your limits can affect how much you enjoy gardening. Address issues that may impair how you can function in the garden, such as accessibility. For example, if the garden is far away from the physical structure of your home, you may feel exhausted by the time you get to the garden, which can affect your productivity and progress. Prior to starting a garden, consider the potential that such issues may arise and then try to build a garden that makes it easy to overcome them. • Consider raised beds. The Reeve Foundation highly recommends raised beds for anyone gardening from a wheelchair. When designing such beds, make sure theyÕre narrow so they can be conveniently accessed from your wheelchair. • Consider hanging baskets. Hanging baskets also can
be a great option for anyone gardening from a wheelchair. Hanging baskets can provide aesthetic appeal inside and outside of a home, and such baskets can be accessed with a pulley system that makes it easy for gardeners to prune and water plants. • Use specialized tools. The online medical resource Verywell Health notes that various manufacturers have recognized thereÕs a market for adaptive gardening tools. Such tools make it easier for people in wheelchairs to indulge their passion for planting. Adaptive tools like trowels, cultivators and hoes can make it easier for gardeners to perform all the standard gardening tasks. Ergonomic adaptive gardening
tools can help gardeners avoid the joint pain that can arise from using more traditional, non-ergonomic tools. • Make it a team effort. Gardening with a loved one can make the hobby even more enjoyable for anyone, including people gardening from their wheelchairs. Seniors can garden alongside their grandchildren and/or friends who also have mobility issues, ensuring no one gets too tired or falls behind. Anyone can enjoy gardening, and that includes people in wheelchairs.

Wellsville farmers market to open June 5
WELLSVILLE — The Wellsville Village Farmers Market will open for the season June 5. Located on the front lawn of the David A. Howe Public Library, the market will operate every Saturday, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., from the first week in June until the last weekend in September. Members of the community can browse and purchase fresh fruits, vegetables, home-made goods and crafts, all from the local area. The Wellsville Village Farmers Market is organized and run by a committee of local residents Stephen Caton, Amanda Silva and Chris Lukacz. The committee is holding an informational meeting for all prospective vendors at 6 p.m. Wednesday at Chelsea’s Catering on Main Street. Local farmers, gardeners and artisans can learn more about how to get involved as vendors at the market, pick up applications and learn the various rules and regulations required at this meeting. In addition to local produce and goods, the market has invited area restaurants to showcase some of their most popular small plate dishes for our patrons. Each week the market will host a different restaurant so friends and families have a chance to enjoy some delicious light fare while shopping. Throughout the summer, guest speakers will present information at designated times on local growing tips and techniques and other interesting topics for the community. This will include talks, dem-
onstrations and interactive discussions with local experts in their field. “The one special thing that makes this farmers market a community event is that all fruits and vegetables must be grown within 30 miles of Wellsville in order to be sold here,” said committee member Stephen Caton, “and all goods and crafts must be produced
within that circle as well.” For more information and applications, visit the “WellsvilleVillageFM” Facebook page or email acting market manager Stephen Caton at wellsvillevillagefarmersmarket@gmail.com.

Out & About Wellsville elementary staff praised for reaction to air-quality incident BY KATHRYN ROSS WELLSVILLE — Quick reaction by Wellsville elementary school staff the morning of May 4 in what could have been a carbon monoxide emergency was praised by board of education members that evening. Superintendent David Foster explained that after elementary students were settled in classes, an odor was detected in the pool area. Students were quickly evacuated from the building. Students were outside for about 15 minutes while the source of the odor was found. Once the faulty piece of equipment was located it was decided to send students home while the equipment was repaired. Bus drivers were called back and the children got an early dismissal. “The buses picked up the students and everyone except two students were back home,” Foster said. “We’re pretty pleased with the way our staff and the community handled it. A lot of communication happened between the school and the transportation department.” Board president Al Mosher also offered praise to the staff for their quick reaction to the situation. The item in question was repaired and inspected by the fire department, Foster said, and everything was back in order within a few hours. An uptick of around 50 COVID-19 cases in the community (as announced by the Allegany County Department of Health) won’t impact the school district’s routine, Foster told the board. “We will continue doing what we are,” he said.
Students in both the elementary and secondary buildings have been back in the school buildings five days a week since April 19. The school is adhering to COVID-19 protocols with students, teachers and staff masked while 6 feet of distance between desks is maintained in classrooms and constant sanitizing is the rule. Foster later mentioned that the board “advocates” for vaccinations and referred to vaccinations starting for 12-yearolds to 15-year-olds possibly as soon as next week with CDC approval. The board formally recognized two teachers, music teacher Lauren Conti and third-grade teacher Kelly Stout Kockler, for obtaining their professional certification. Both have been with the district four years. “They’re in for the long haul now,” Foster commented.
Principal MaryEllen O’Connell gave the board a quick update on the activities scheduled for seniors and juniors and other students. She said that this year’s prom, scheduled for June 4, will take place outdoors on the school “patio” near the shop room, with tents and a buffet and music by a DJ. This year the prom is restricted to seniors and their guests. “We promised the juniors we would pay special attention to them next year,” O’Connell said. Scholarship Night, when more than $100,000 worth of scholarships are announced, will be held virtually on June 8. The 2021 version of the senior trip will take place closer to home with three days of celebration, O’Connell said, adding, “They understand the problem and the class just

wanted to do something together.” The three days of events for seniors include a trip to Darian Lake amusement park, a trip to the Galleria Mall in Buffalo for the Urban Air Adventure, tubing at Trout Run Campground or traveling to Rolling Hills Asylum ghost adventure. Graduation is scheduled for June 25, at the Wellsville Municipal Airport, where there may be seating for students amid restrictions. “We’re still tweaking some of the details, but the students understand, and the class officers have been very cooperative,” O’Connell said.
House 56 continued from 9 Department, said, “It is a great feeling to see a project of this magnitude done with students in a hands-on learning environment. It is a testament that hard work pays off.” Reflecting on the effort put forth by the students who were involved in the project, Zver noted, “The students that have worked on this project should have a sense of pride seeing this home completed and sold.” The houses that Alfred State students regularly build for the Wellsville community, valued at more than $250,000,
typically take two years to complete and are then subsequently sold on the open market and occupied. Students build and detail the houses in a subdivision owned by the Educational Foundation of Alfred, Inc., a private foundation dedicated to improving the Alfred State community through the support of educational programs. The Educational Foundation funds the construction of the houses. For more information, contact the Office of the Dean for the School of Applied Technology at (607) 587-3101.
