Visitors to Ellicottville this weekend will once again have the opportunity to take a step back in time when the greaser look was in, their cars were hot rods and rock ‘n’ roll was king. The village’s annual Rock ‘n’ Roll Weekend begins Friday, Sept. 14 and continues through Sunday, Sept. 16. Presented by Northtown Automotive Group, Rock ‘n’ Roll Weekend is a one-of-a-kind overnight event. Now in its 19th year, it’s one of the area’s favorite fall events that draws music lovers and motor enthusiasts from all over the region. The weekend events kickoff Friday evening with live music at a number of Ellicottville’s popular hot spots including Madigans, Balloons, Ellicottville Brewing Company, Villaggio and the Gin Mill. On Saturday, the rockin’ weekend continues as the Winery of Ellicottville joins the other music venues with a stage set up on Monroe Street in front of the winery. A rain location for the show will be inside Villaggio across the street. The popular Classic Car Show caps off the weekend Sunday with over 250 vehicles expected to be setup along Washington, Monroe and Jefferson streets from noon to 5 p.m. Proud owners will have classic and antique rides all shined up and polished to be judged by a panel of experienced car enthusiasts with awards in each class. According to Brian McFadden, executive director of the Ellicottville Chamber of Commerce, the five

Pumpkinville Opens Saturday for 50th Season By Rich Place
Autumn is on its way and that means Pumpkinville is ready to open for the season. After all, the well-known stop for all things pumpkin — and plenty of other fall-themed attractions — will celebrate its 50th year when it opens for the season on Saturday and remains open daily through Halloween. Pumpkinville was originally opened in 1968 by Joseph and Helen Holloran, who started it outside their home nearby on Route 98. Dan and Diane Pawlowski have operated Pumpkinville from their 200-acre farm on Sugartown Road for 23 years after purchasing it from the family. “It doesn’t seem that long ago and sometimes it seems like we’ve done it forever,” Dan said at the farm on Tuesday while preparing for the upcoming season. Among a handful of new attractions, a new event at Pumpkinville this year will be its inaugural Sunflower Festival, scheduled for the weekend of Sept. 22 and 23. During those two days, the public is encouraged to come and pick sunflowers or purchase pre-picked bundles with proceeds benefiting the Pink Pumpkin Project, an Olean-based organization which provides support for those undergoing breast cancer treatments. “Whatever we get, 100 percent goes to them,” Dan said. “This area

has been really, really good to us. This is an opportunity for us to give back to something that has a really, really worthy cause.” Dan said he hopes to expand the sunflower event annually but wanted to see first how well the sunflowers would grow at the farm. “I wasn’t sure how good I’d be at growing sunflowers,” he admitted while looking at the several rows on the property. “We’ll have plenty and we are

excited about it. But we’ll also try and get our timing even better next year.” Along with the sunflowers, Pumpkinville will unveil a number of new attractions this season, perhaps most notably giant children’s slides on a hill and a new section called the Barnyard Ball Zone. Ellicottville Distillery to Host Vintage Motorcycle Event distillery for display and awards. “He did most of the legwork to get the bikes here and we have plenty of space. The distillery owns three acres and I own another 17 acres that adjoin it,” he said. Musical entertainment will be provided by The Hick Ups, a local bluegrass and country band from The Southern Tier. With their three and four part harmonies, the band mixes traditional bluegrass, old country and rock songs into good-time music. Local food vendor KB Foods from Salamanca will be at the event with their food truck. “I'll be setting up at the distillery at noon, so people are welcome to come then, if they wish,” he said. The Ellicottville Distillery officially opened its doors for business in October 2016. In addition to being chief distiller, Scharf also manages the distillery and is in charge of most of the day-to-day operations. Motorcycle enthusiasts will have the opportunity enjoy a vintage motorcycle event at the Ellicottville Distillery from 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 16 on the grounds of the distillery. Distiller Bryan Scharf said this is the first time the distillery has hosted the event, noting they have 10 vintage motorcycles registered so far and expects more to show up. Although there’s no deadline to register, Scharf said he would appreciate registrations to determine how many bikes to expect. Registration is $10. “For vintage, we are looking at anything 25 years and older,” he said. “There will be prizes for first, second and third place for the best vintage bikes. The awards will be people’s choice, so whoever comes to the event can get tickets to vote for Best Bike.” Scharf said the idea for the event came from a man who visited the distillery and pitched the idea of having people bring their vintage motorcycles to the

Scharf said they will be celebrating their second year with an anniversary party Sunday, Sept. 30 from 1 to 7 p.m. The Ellicottville Distillery is located at 5462 Robbins Road near Ashford Junction. Cattaraugus County Tourism Ads Paying Off, Specialist Says

If you’ve been watching WGRZTV, the NBC affiliate in Buffalo lately, chances are you’ve seen a television ad for Cattaraugus County tourism. The locally-produced 30-second summer ad has been seen on a wide variety of programming from local news to soap operas to Ellen DeGeneres Show. And it’s working, according to Jacquie Gardner, tourism specialist with the Cattaraugus County Department of Economic Development, Planning and Tourism. She’s answering the telephone calls and inquiries to the enchantedmountains.com website generated by the ad. Gardner showed the ad to county lawmakers on the Development and Agriculture Committee on Wednesday. A link to the ad is also on the Enchanted Mountains website, the department’s Twitter and Facebook accounts and the Enchanted Mountains YouTube site, bit. ly/2wQKZrM. “We realize that video is the way of the world right now,” Gardner told the Olean Times Herald in an interview. “We’re trying to get into more video.” The summer ad was a combination of drone video provided by a Randolph company, Eyes In The Sky Productions, and other local videographers and
photographers. Drone footage was used to promote the Amish Trail and Allegany State Park. Also featured are local breweries and wineries. “The whole gamut of experiences followed by taking a step back in time with the Amish Trail” is the message conveyed by the ad, Gardner said. The summer ad will be phasing out over the next several weeks to be replaced by the fall ad, Gardner said. It will include Rock City Park and Griffis Sculpture Park with fall colors, she said, plus the ever-popular Pumpkinville, which attracts 100,000 people over six weeks. This spring, tourism officials ran county videos in special kiosks at the Walden Galleria Mall in Cheektowaga and Destiny U.S.A. in Syracuse. A general video played at the Galleria, while an Amish Trail video played in the Syracuse mall, Gardner said. To help spread the word about Cattaraugus County’s tourism offerings, a dozen travel writers are visiting the county next week in two groups, Gardner said. The Economic Development, Planning and Tourism will begin to solicit ads for the 2019 Tourism Guide starting Sept. 21. Applications will be on the Enchanted Mountains website. Gardner also writes a Fall Foliage Blog for the county at enchantedmountains. com/blog.

ECS NEWS & SPORTS Ellicottville Students Survive First Week of New Visions By Louisa Benatovich ECS Student Reporter

In the spring of last year, three Ellicottville juniors submitted an application. It was a rigorous process requiring an essay, multiple teacher recommendations and an almost immaculate transcript. With the press of a button, it was over. All they could do was wait. Myself, Brennan Finn and Sierra Maybee were the only Ellicottville students to apply to the selective New Vision: Health Professions program. Held at the Olean BOCES center, New Vision is an amazing opportunity for high school students interested in the medical field. Through the program, accepted individuals have the opportunity to earn 17 college credits, taking JCC courses such as Anatomy and Physiology I and II, Medical Office Terminology, Health Science and English 1530. New Vision participants have the potential to shave
an entire year off college. Alongside the classes, New Vision students (starting Oct. 17) shadow longstanding health professionals at the Olean General Hospital. From obstetrics to geriatrics, students get a taste of all corners of the medical landscape, potentially helping them decide on a lifetime career. In early summer, the three were all accepted into the program. Over the vacation, we studied, read and took notes, preparing for the new scholastic year. Jennifer Militello, the New Vision instructor at Olean BOCES for almost 20 years, was excited to meet her 15 new pupils on Aug. 29. “I absolutely love teaching this program,” she said. “I love watching my students grow and develop, and see where they end up after college!” Comprised of students from Ellicottville, Olean, Allegany-Limestone, Cattaraugus-Little Valley
and Franklinville, this batch of New Vision students are pushing each other to their fullest potential. With only seven days of school under their belts as of press time, New Vision students have already taken several tests, written essays, dissected rats, and held hearts (albeit plastic ones) in their hands. Brennan Finn is particularly enjoying the program, even showing up early to class. “New Visions is a great program that helps us get a head start to college!” he said. “The program gives hands-on experience through lab classes at JCC and doing rotations in the hospital later this year.” Finn, who hopes to open his own physical therapy practice, is excited for all that the program has to offer. Sierra Maybee, a prospective pharmacist, is looking forward to making the most of her senior year by taking such high level classes Driving to Olean everyday definitely doesn’t make for a boring senior year! As for me, looking toward medical school, I appreciate the academic rigor of the program, and how wonderful it is to learn something I am truly passionate about. As the second week begins, the three of us ECS students prepare to learn cell structure and function, review chemistry, use Microsoft Excel (an eternal mystery), and make many, many flashcards. For us, New Vision: Health Professions is an oasis of possibility; we plan to drink every last drop.

Neilon Likes the Grit From Young Eagles Girls Soccer Squad

The season’s off to a slow start, but when Mary Neilon talks about her young 2018 Ellicottville girls soccer team, she keeps coming back to one word: “gritty.” With six returning letterwinners from last year’s 10-7 squad, the bulk of the the 2018 team (12 of 22 players) are eighth, ninth or 10th graders. “But they're a gritty bunch,” Neilon said. “We're just trying to work together, learn the game and do our best every day to get a little better. And to play as a team, to play as a unit. So it's been promising: their work ethic is very strong. Other than that, I can't predict anything. We're hoping to be competitive. “They want to work hard and they're striving to win. I think having that kind of kid as a (majority) of our team
has really helped. They're not afraid of hard work.” So far, the Eagles are 0-3 with a 3-2 season opening loss to Fredonia, then two losses in the Olean Tournament to the Huskies, 8-1, and Portville, 3-2. “It’ll be a good test for us,” Neilon said before the Olean tourney. “Fredonia, we played well, it was a good test for us. But things have changed since then, so we'll see.” Entering her 34th year, Neilon held a record of 450-151-34. She said the goals for this team don’t differ too much from other years, despite the youth or inexperience. “We pretty much do (this) every year: you just try to bring the players along as best you can and teach them the game,” Neilon said. “That's really what we strive to do every year. “Strive to be a united
group and stay steadfast to our goals, try and get better every day.” Ellicottville competes in the CCAA East division with with Portville, Randolph, CattaraugusLittle Valley, Franklinville and Salamanca. In sectional competition, the Eagles, who are merged with West Valley, moved up to Class C this season. What will the longtime ECS coach look for as the Eagles advance into the season? It starts on defense. “Strong defense always and transitioning to offense after we win the ball, with more courage,” Neilon said. “More courage to possess the ball, and that's a big goal with a young team. One, to play really good defense, and then when we win it, let's not give it back. Let's try to be confident with our touches on the ball.”

Village Planning Board Discusses New Parking Lot and Winery Balcony By Caitlin Croft
The September meeting of the Village Planning Board opened with a Public Hearing on 37 Mill St. This will be a mixed use building of two residential units and retail/office space. Floor to area ratio, open space and parking requirements have been met. There will be four new parking spaces and an addition of a 24’ x 12’ front deck and a 10’ x 18’ rear deck off the second level with patio on the main level. This was sent for referral to the County Planning Board and they made a determination of no significant county wide impact. There was no one in attendance to speak on project and no correspondences were received. There was a motion to close the Public Hearing; a second and ayes carried. Next there was a motion to approve the minutes from the August 2018 meeting; there was a second and ayes
carried. Old Business First on the agenda was the Site Plan Amendment for 4 Monroe St. This project once again brought many members of the public to the meeting. The originally approved site plan consisted of four parking spots three in the back and one in the driveway itself which was a condition of approval. The applicant has put in a larger than approved parking lot, which was brought to the attention of the Code Enforcement Officer and VPB. The parking lot now consists of six parking spots. The applicant presented a plan in the July 2018 meeting to erect 6-foot, light tight wooden fences on each side of the property. The rear will remain the chain link fence that currently exists. There will also be a 2-foot by 2-foot catch basin installed and there is a new grading plan for better drainage. Niles Pierson, town/village engineer, has reviewed the plan and finds
it satisfactory. During the Public Hearing at the August 2018 meeting, there were a couple concerns that the Village Planning Board had regarding they plan. First, the applicant advised that they would be using millings for the parking lot surface. To this, there were concerns of millings being plowed into the catch basin and clogging it up. There was also a question of if it should be paved so it lasts longer. The response from Pierson was paving would hold up better but does not feel that they can force the applicant to pave. With millings yes, they will get plowed into the catch basin but all catch basins must go through routine maintenance and cleaning. Pierson advised that millings would actually be better concerning flooding and storm water as it is more permeable than pavement. There were a couple comments from the public as to the drainage and where it would lead to. This
was answered by the project architect and engineer Aaron Tiller that the basin releases the water into gravel below so the water can slowly disperse into the ground. This is standard for all projects with stormwater, flooding issues. There was also a request from the neighbor for a curb to prevent parts of the drive from getting into their lawn. There was a question if they planned on redoing the driveway portion of the parking lot and the applicant advised they have not considered it yet, but will fix the current pothole that is present. There was a motion to grant the amended parking plan as depicted on the revised July 23 plans with the following conditions: Parking drainage and grading must be regularly maintained, the stockade fence be installed as presented on the proposed site plan amendment, a final site inspection is to be completed by the Code Enforcement Officer and
Town/Village Engineer and there are to be plantings under the tree to maintain green space. There was a second and ayes carried. One board member, Sean Cornelius, abstained from the vote. Next was the Architectural Design Review for a balcony at the Winery of Ellicottville over the village sidewalk. There is no public hearing required for this action and notices were sent to adjacent owners. Under Section 10 guidelines, the balcony matches the style of the existing building and the materials are materials typically allowed in the Village Commercial 1 District. They will redo the current concrete apron and replace with exposed aggregate concrete adding a curb. Also, they will replace the current sidewalk with new concrete. The Village Planning Board advised this matter needs to be taken to the Village Board. Due to there being no Public Hearing,
the Board opened the floor for comments. There were concerns of visibility of EVL Spirits brought up by Shannon Carscallen, owner/ operator. Carscallen brought up concerns that she did not receive notice. She was advised notice is only sent to adjacent owners; there is not a radius which is protocol for Special Use Permits. Village Planner Gary Palumbo advised that he would keep a note of this for the next time amendments are made to the zoning laws. She emphasized that owners of businesses on Monroe are constantly trying to entice customers down the side street and this balcony will affect her sales. She proposed that the railings be made of a clear material as a solution or asked if she could lower her sign. Unfortunately, the sign is already at 8’ and that is the minimum clearance for a hanging sign. The board is unaware of any clear See Planning Board, page 7

The board advised that if the sign was a projecting one off the front of the balcony instead of a hanging one underneath that EVL Spirit sign would not be blocked and when they apply for the sign permit to make that change. Back to the project at 37 Mill there was a motion to declare a negative declaration under the State Environment Quality Review; a second and ayes carried. New Business There is a proposed Single Family Home to be located at 22 Fillmore Drive. This is a 3,200 square foot, 1 ½ story home. This is an
allowed use in the Medium Density District and no Special Use Permit is required. All set backs, floor to area ratio and open space requirements have been met. This fits the character and nature of the sub division and all materials are allowed. The board deemed this a complete application and there was a motion to set the Public Hearing for Oct. 9 at 5:30 p.m. There is a proposed project at 8-10 Washington that would consist of the following: an addition to the rear, railing on the marquee, canopies to be removed and updates to the rear residential entrance. But that may not be the best thing to do. Maybe Paul should just take the typewriter back to where his wife found it. Maybe he should stop asking questions and simply walk away while he still can. Great Valley Town Board Schedules Public Hearing For Zoning Changes By Kellen M. Quigley
The town of Great Valley is planning to install more memorialized bricks at the town’s memorial park later this fall. Town officials encourage anyone who wants to buy a brick and include the name of a loved one who passed away to call the town hall. Photo by Kellen M. Quigley.
After discussing the potential changes in August’s meeting, the Great Valley Town Board scheduled a public hearing concerning zoning changes for their Oct. 8 meeting. “This will be a local change for down in the Ellicott Street area,” said Town Supervisor Daniel Brown. “We’re looking to change the zoning to allow manufactured homes at the end of that street where it
becomes Great Valley.” Presently, people aren’t allowed to install manufactured homes on that street, which begins in the city of Salamanca, according to Great Valley zoning laws, Brown explained. “There’s that issue down there that there are two zones,” said Chris Schena, chair of the town’s planning and zoning boards. Of the two zones, one of them doesn’t allow for manufactured homes,

He said the opinion of the planning and zoning board is that there should really only be one zone, not two. “There are some homes down there that were there before zoning, and there’s nothing we can do about them,” he said. “But when we get approached by people who want to put some in there, we couldn’t allow it because of the zoning on one side of the street wouldn’t let it, but the zoning across the street would.” The proposed change to the zoning would be the town’s second local law of 2018, Brown said. After the public hearing scheduled for Oct. 8, the town board would vote that night on the change. “The board figured it would be better to make everything the same down there,” Schena added.

For those interested in purchasing a brick, call the town clerk or Brown at the town hall, 945-4200, and they’ll add the name to the list. “There are 5 bricks to be done in the next couple weeks,” he said. “If people want to honor a loved one, contact myself or the town clerk as soon as possible.” The name of any Great Valley resident who passed away can be memorialized, Brown said, not only those who served in the military. “I don’t know if we’ll get it all done before our October meeting, but we want to get started on it,” he added. After some issues with trash left behind at the Kill Buck Memorial Pavillion, Brown said the town has made an agreement with Casella Waste to have a dumpster at the park. “I thought that maybe would help keep it cleaner,” he explained. “They brought it down there and left it there during the community picnic, so I thought we’d try that.” Brown said they plan to have the dumpster from May 1 to October 31. He said it would $20 a month to have it during the summer season and $35 per pick up. “Maybe we’ll do away with October if we don’t have many rentals or anything going on up there,” he added.

And, of course, there will be a wide selection of pumpkins, a harvest that Dan is happy about. “We’re just getting the first few ones in but we think they look good,” he said as employees placed recently picked pumpkins on the lawn. “They’ve got good handles on them, they are good and orange and they are ripe.” He said pumpkins like it hot, so this summer was good for the crop. The Pawlowskis continue to improve Pumpkinville each year since they purchased the business. Obviously, pumpkins have always been a longstanding attraction for the farm but
so has the food and cider mill, Dan said. “The crop was the mainstay,” he said. “Now we sell a lot of pumpkins, don’t get me wrong, but where we stand out is all this entertainment. The jumping pillows, the corn maze, the train, now this new playground, stuff like that. Those are what have stepped us out away from someone selling pumpkins on the side of the road.” When the Pawlowskis first purchased the business they added some food and hayrides right away, he said, and essentially each year add some new entertainment. “(Visitors) are looking to do something,” Dan said. “They are looking to have fun and to have an experience. You work hard to try and keep prices as friendly as you can.” The Pawlowskis invited members of the Holloran family to visit the farm this year for the 50th
anniversary, and there is potential the original owners’ sons, Tom and Dan Holloran, who live in the midwest, plan to attend for a week in October, Dan said. He also noted this year that a handful of corporate sponsors are part of the season at Pumpkinville. LandPro Equipment will have some items on display at the farm, Ellicottville Brewing Company is brewing a special beer to mark the 50th anniversary and Shults Resale Group has special giveaways planned as well. Pumpkinville is open daily through Halloween from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. It’s located at 4844 Sugartown Road in Great Valley, just off Route 98.
