Bring the whole family to this annual celebration of local agriculture, familyfriendly entertainment and grandstand events all weekend long. JM Motorsports is hosting an exciting weekend of grandstand events that you won’t want to miss! From Monster Truck shows to the World’s Largest Demolition Derby, there’s something to rev your engine at the fairgrounds this weekend. Daily General Admission is just $10 and includes an allday gate pass and unlimited midway rides. A variety of daily entertainment is included in general admission. Commerford’s Petting Zoo is returning to the fair this year and their exotic animals should not be missed: visit the camels, ponies and kangaroos all day throughout the week of the fair. The Swifty Swine Racing and Swimming Pigs will also be a part of this year’s fair—according to Zach Johnson, the “Swine Master,” “You haven’t lived until you’ve seen these racing pigs compete for the grand prize, an Oreo cookie!” New for 2017, the Pratt Family Chainsaw Carvers will be creating different sculptures all week long. The family’s beautiful works of art include a howling wolf, a panda bear, different kinds of owls, and even Star Wars character R2-D2! Mutts Gone Nuts is another new addition to 2017’s line-up. This talented group of dogs has made the incredible leap “from shelters to showbiz” through their comical performances that have delighted fans all over the country including former First Lady Barbara Bush and recording artists

All the fun you’ve been having in Ellicottville this summer is sure to have your working up at appetite, and if you’re hungry for a selection of the best foods around, be sure to swing by the annual Taste of Ellicottville Aug. 12-13. The Taste of Ellicottville lines the streets with representatives from all the top restaurants, serving up their fare cafe-style. Purchase tickets at the centrally-located booth, then exchange those tix for everything from apps to sliders to desserts and much more. Food item tickets are $1 each and restaurants will charge 1-5 tickets for each dish. Radio personalities will judge each restaurants signature dish in front of a live audience. A cooking demonstration and competition will have your mouths watering and anxious to try the recipes out at home. Participating restaurants include: Balloons, Bike & Bean, Cadillac Jack’s, Centerplate, Dina’s Restaurant, Dina’s at the Mont, Ellicottville Brewing Company, Finnerty’s, Gin Mill, Katy’s Cafe, Katy’s Catering, Madigan’s, Monroe Street Brick and Brew, Seneca Allegany Resort and Casino, Silver Fox, Subway, The Tee Bar, Tim & Bonnie’s, Villaggio and Watson’s. The Winery of Ellicottville only continues to grow after seven years in business. Year after year, they continue to add new product line after new product line. I recently got a chance to speak with Beth Sheehy, who owns the winery with her husband, Sam. Sheehy tells me about their most recent recognitions from the Finger Lakes International Wine Competition. The Sweetest Thing (one of their sweet red wines) earned a double gold medal, the highest distinction you can receive.

The Shake on the Lake troupe has a reputation for outstanding performances, so CCAC is very happy to be part of bringing them here for the community to enjoy.” The play will be performed by Shake on the Lake, a Silver Lake, NY, based Shakespearian troupe that has been bringing the Bard’s pieces to Western and Central New York since 2012. The organization’s goals are creating a fun, familyfriendly, outdoor production
of Shakespeare to high artistic standards. They look to use cost-effective, green production practices and have been known to use refurbished and repurposed items in their productions. Shake on the Lake also helps sponsors find ways to make performances low-cost to offer a higher accessibility to quality performances. In previous years, the troupe has performed Twelfth Night, The Tempest, The Comedy of Errors, and A Midsummer Night’s Dream. They tour the region performing to bring

Last weekend, I was asked to help judge the 4-H photography entries at the Cattaraugus County Fair. For about six hours, a steady stream of kids of all ages came up to my table, each with one or several photos to enter, in hopes of having theirs selected for the State Fair later this month. I was so impressed by what I saw—pictures of landscapes, animals, flowers and so much more! Many were mounted on coordinating mats with professional-looking captions and I looked forward to reviewing each one. Judging these photos was no easy task! Photography is just one area these kids compete in, and 4-H is just one part of the fair. As it continues to bring smiles to the faces of those who attend through Sunday, Aug. 6, I encourage you to stop by the fairgrounds in Little Valley and see what it’s all about. Check out the entertainment in the grandstand, an array of yummy food, many amusement rides that are included with fair admission, tractors, special shows and, of course, the hard work of the many 4-Hers in Catt County. From dairy cows to pigs to chickens to goats, 4-H members have been working hard to get their animals ready for the annual livestock shows and market sales. There are many ways to support these members’ hard work. Visit the different animal barns to meet the students and learn about their hard work, and enjoy a tasty bite at the Cattaraugus County 4-H Snack Shack. The Snack Shack is open for lunch and dinner, where you can get hot dogs, burgers, milkshakes, rootbeer floats and more. The Snack Shack is run by 4-H members and all proceeds benefit their organization. Grandstand entertainment takes place throughout the weekend with JM Motorsports, which produces over 60 motor sport events every year at more than 30 different county and state fairs in the eastern United States. The Monster Mash Truck Rallies take place on Friday, August 4 at 7:30 p.m. and Saturday, Aug. 5 at 1 p.m. Mike Vaters Jr. and his Overkill Evolution monster truck, as well as Jimmy Creten and his Bounty Hunter monster truck, will be highlighting both shows. Overkill Evolution won the
2014 Young Guns Shootout championship at the World Finals in Las Vegas and then come back the very next year to capture the Monster Jam World Freestyle championship. In doing so, Vaters and his Overkill Evolution became the first driver and truck to ever win the Young Guns one year and the World Finals the next. Bounty Hunter has consistently been one of the best performing trucks at the Las Vegas World Finals and is a former Monster Jam World Finals Freestyle champion. In addition, the widely acclaimed Higher Education and Scarlett Bandit Monster Trucks are scheduled to appear and perform. The weekend grandstand events continue with the Kids Power Wheels Demolition Derby on Friday night and the Big Rig Truck Pull on Saturday, Aug. 5 at 6:30 p.m.
The fair concludes on Sunday, Aug. 6 with the World’s Largest Demolition Derby at 5 p.m. Please note that these weekend grandstand events (Friday through Sunday) are not included in general admission and have an additional $7 grandstand charge. The Springville Kiwanis has organized the Christine Padasak Memorial Autism Awareness 5K Run & Family Fun Walk on Aug. 5, while devoting the proceeds to The Children’s League and its Autism Program in Springville. These two designations are a great spotlight for our picturesque tourist town and huge compliment to the hard work the winery has been putting into its art. The Natalie is the winery’s first vintage. On any given day, you can walk into the store and find Dominic (Beth’s father, who claims he has retired) telling stories of how he found his passion for wine or his opinion on the newest ideas and technology in wine making. There are wine tastings and tours all day every day with no reservation needed. The Winery provides three types of tastings— traditional, which consists of six wines for $5, Chocolate Pairing for $8 and the Tour & Taste for $10. Ellicottville police are actively enforcing town and village trash laws and have fined people for illegally dumping in private dumpsters. Under Environmental Conservation law, fines can be $1,500 or more for illegal dumping. Please read and follow rules below: Village of Ellicottville The Village of Ellicottville provides regular curb-side garbage and recycling pickup every Monday. Recyclable materials (clear glass containers, recyclable plastic, cardboard, paper and cans) must be separated from regular refuse. Trash may be put on the curb no sooner than 24 hours before pickup. If you miss the Monday pickup deadline, you must take your trash to a nearby Cattaraugus County Transfer Station. Persons seen dumping trash in private dumpsters or on someone else’s private property may be ticketed and fined $1,500 or more by police or authorized Village personnel. When holidays fall on a Monday, pickup will be the following day. Allegany State Park’s 9th Annual Beach Party
Spend some fun in the sun at Allegany State Park at the 9th annual Beach Party Aug. 18! The day kicks off at 3 p.m. at the Quaker Beach area with a Seneca-Salamanca Chamber of Commerce-sponsored showcase featuring local vendors and organizations. Come check out the many great things that are available in the local community. The chicken barbecue will begin at 4 p.m. (until sold out) hosted by J-Con Concessions. While there, make sure you hit the beach! At 4:30 p.m., Keith James gets the music going. Keith is an accomplished pop singer/ songwriter from Buffalo, New York. His soulful vocals and infectious stage presence have brought him success not only on the local stage, but the national one as well. One of Keith’s most notable feats was appearing on season 6 of NBC’s “The Voice”. Since then he’s gone on to do special events for the Buffalo Sabres, Bills, and many others in local and regional venues. Keith will be followed by park Artist in Residence Sean Patrick McGraw at 6 p.m. Sean is a singer and songwriter who gained national recognition in 2004 as a semi-finalist on USA Network’s Nashville Star. Since then, Sean has continued to perform as well as write songs that have been licensed by ESPN, recorded by major country artist Montgomery Gentry, as well as others that have been placed on TV programs such as HBO’s True Blood and Sons on Anarchy. At 7:30 p.m., headliner Kevin McCarthy takes the stage. Kevin is a singer and songwriter and has been living his dream career as a professional musician for over

16 years. Kevin has played in the band “Hollywood” and then co-founded McCarthyizm with his brother, which quickly became one of the top bands in Western New York. About 10 years later, Kevin began his solo career, playing throughout Western New York and Canada. He was twice voted top solo artist and was inducted in to the Buffalo Music Hall of Fame in 2009. He is an active songwriter and has released numerous CDs with McCarthyizm and won high praise with his first solo CD “High on You.” This family-friendly event will also feature activities for all ages. Park Naturalists will man an “Ask the Naturalist” table. So bring your naturerelated questions and check out some cool interactive displays. There will be craft activities for the kids, and who knows? We might even break out the Limbo stick! But the night’s not over. The Quaker Beach will be open to swimming from 11 a.m. through 6:45 p.m. and the snack bar will be open from 11 a.m. through the start of the fireworks. Be sure to stick around as we end the evening with a
beautiful fireworks display over the waters of Quaker Lake –definitely a sight not to be missed! The launch site for the fireworks has been relocated to a field just off ASP 3 at the midpoint of the lake between the Quaker toll booth and the intersection of ASP 3 and Cain Hollow. This change is required to be in compliance with Federal regulations restricting the distance fireworks can be launched from the newly established eagle’s nest in the area. The best vantage points are at both ends of the lake, a couple of areas on each side of the lake, as well as the Quaker Beach down near the sand area. Patrons planning to view the fireworks at the beach should plan to arrive early as the parking lot has limited capacity and will be closed once it is full. Be sure to check the Allegany State Park Facebook page for a map of the best viewing sites. A great antipasto table and Pasta Station with multiple pastas, sauces, sausage and meatballs will tempt all. You will love the seafood medley from John Harvard’s, and the seafood lasagna from Meyer’s Steak House is out of this world. Vegetarian and gluten free diners will have choices as well. The feature of the event is the dessert table where Watson’s Chocolates surround the extra special cakes, cookies and tarts created by chef Tom Kneeland. The menu is almost complete, so look for it in the next few weeks when the final touches are added. An extensive silent auction and short live auction provide some great bargains for all who attend. Beyond the food and the company, this annual fundraiser supports the many local projects and individuals in need of support through Family Support for Ellicottville. Better yet, while you are helping a great cause, your ticket donation is tax deductible. Remember that this is Ellicottville so the dress is always casual. Join the Harvesting at Audubon Gardening Workshop Late summer is the time for harvesting tomatoes, potatoes, squash, and berries. “Late Summer Harvests” is the theme for the fourth in a series of five gardening classes presented by organic gardeners Scott and Pam Stoleson through Audubon Community Nature Center. This hands-on, taste-buds-on workshop is set for 1-3 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 20, at the Stolesons’ home in Sugar Grove, PA. You may get to sample such distinctive items as Black from Tula tomato, kohlrabi, multi-colored carrots, and Ma Guan, also known as fuzzy gourd. You will learn the tasks needed to keep the veggies coming in: tying up tomatoes, snapping suckers, monitoring mildews and blights, and squishing squash bugs. The Stolesons have been raising some of their own food for more than 15 years. They estimate that they produce 85 percent of the vegetables, 50 percent of the fruit, and 10 percent of the nuts that they consume. Keep in mind that you could get dirty. Fee for the workshop is $16, $12 for Nature Center members. Enrollment is limited. Paid reservations are required by Wednesday, Aug. 16, and can be made by calling (716) 569-2345 during business hours or clicking through the Program page at www.auduboncnc.org. Driving directions will be emailed to registrants on the Thursday before the workshop. The final workshop on Oct.1, Fall Harvests and Putting Your Garden to Bed, will include preparing a meal from ingredients you will pick on arrival.
