Connoisseurs of fine cuisine and people who just love to eat are expected to flock to Ellicottville this weekend for the 33rd annual Taste of Ellicottville. The event takes place from noon to 4 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday on Washington and Monroe streets, where hungry visitors can sample delectable food items offered by local restaurants and other businesses. The Ellicottville Chamber of Commerce recently announced more than 20 of Ellicottville’s finest dining establishments will participate in the event, from in downtown Ellicottville to the surrounding area. “One thing not too many people know is we have 23 participants, possibly 24, this year that are all local establishments. They are not coming in from outside the area,” said Barb Pump, membership and events manager at the Ellicottville Chamber of Commerce. “New participants include Cupcaked, Steelbound, The Public House and Tops Markets.” According to Pump, both ends of Monroe Street from Hughey Alley to Martha Street, will be closed off and there will be tents set up

Shake on the Lake, a Silver Lake based Shakespearean troupe, will perform “Richard III” in Ellicottville at the Village Gazebo on Friday evening, Aug. 10, during Taste of Ellicottville weekend. The event, which is cosponsored by the Cattaraugus County Arts Council, will be held at 8 p.m. Attendees are recommended to bring their chairs or a blanket. Shake on the Lake is a nonprofit professional theatre company that specializes in performances to underserved rural communities. The group hosts a full year of programming including Summer Shakespeare Tour, Winter Performances and Educational Programming. Shake on the Lake was founded in 2011 by Josh Rice and Pilar McKay. The hope was to bring Shakespeare to the shores of Silver Lake, the westernmost Finger Lake. Performing in their hometown eventually grew into touring to other rural communities in Upstate New York.

$50M National Comedy Center Celebrates Grand Opening
About 30 years ago, just before Lucille Ball passed away, she told her hometown of Jamestown that rather than a museum celebrating her life, there should be a place that celebrates all comedy. This past weekend, that vision was realized with the grand opening of the National Comedy Center. The National Comedy Center is now the first non-profit cultural institution and national-scale visitor experience dedicated to the art of comedy. This new 37,000 square foot, $50 million facility tells the
story of comedy from its origins through the present, with more than 50 immersive, interactive exhibits and rare comedy artifacts. The Grand Opening week-long celebration featured Amy Schumer, Lily Tomlin, a tribute to the original Saturday Night Live cast with Dan Aykroyd, Laraine Newman and writer Alan Zweibel, Fran Drescher, Lucie Arnaz, Laugh-In producer George Schlatter, comedians Lewis Black, See Comedy, page A11

As good as Pennsylvania’s first half was in Saturday night’s 45th annual Big 30 AllStar Charities Classic, it would’ve been difficult to say which side of the ball was best. Its spread offense passed for four touchdowns, tying a game record before intermission. Its dominant defense had New York stalling to only 86 yards, thanks to four sacks. “We’ve got it all,” said quarterback Sawyer Drummond of OttoEldred. Pennsylvania’s second half wasn’t as impressive, but it didn’t need to be for Todd Silfies’ team to win convincingly, 37-22, at Parkway Field. “I think we came out and set the right tone and then it helped for the rest of the game,” said Port Allegany’s Jake Kallenborn, credited with three sacks. “We kind of whooped some butt in the first little bit.” Pennsylvania’s third straight win cut New York’s lead in the alltime series to one game, 22-21-2. The stars were the passing duo of Drummond and Kane’s Reed Williams, who combined to go 22-of35 for 301 yards and helped Pennsy to a 29-9 halftime lead. Williams was 10-of-15 for 179 yards with a 3-yard touchdown to Kane’s Ray Maze and 36-yard strike to Ridgway’s Neil MacDonald. I’m really proud of Sawyer Drummond as well. He really dove into that offense. I’m sure he and Reed were spending time talking on the field, I know, but off the field about just understanding the intricacies of it. Sawyer played a whale of a football game as well and then grinded it out, doing what we’re used to seeing him do, which is run people over there a little bit at the end. It’s just fun to see these guys showcase their talents.” Williams also scored on a 1-yard QB sneak for the lone second-half points for Pennsylvania, which fumbled at the New York 1-yard line on its first drive after the break. Kallenborn, the 2018 Big 30 Wrestler of the Year headed to Gannon, was among 12 Pennsylvania defensive players who also played on that side of the ball for the Allegheny Mountain League in the Frank Varischetti AllStar Game June 29 in Brockway. They went 2-for2 in winning all-star games, also defeating the Keystone Shortway Athletic Conference 40-14. “I played with them
for two-a-days for a week in the Varischetti game, and I got to know them and I kind of made some friends,” Kallenborn said. “Here, we played with them every day for two weeks and then really started to make some good friends. “We played together pretty much all of us, and we played well together … It was definitely a good note to end on.” Their group had New York frustrated early, forcing three punts, a turnover on downs at the Pennsylvania 46 and a fumble at the New York 49 in the first half. “We were out of sync on everything,” said New York coach Chad Bartoszek of Franklinville/ Ellicottville. “We were out of sync on snap, we were out of sync on line execution. Some real kind of stupid plays that we hadn’t made during practice kind of come back to bite us a little bit. We go down on the 3 after a (Pennsylvania) missed fake punt and we snap it over our head and we get into some trouble.” New York scored the game’s final 13 points to skew Pennsylvania’s domination. Brock Blecha threw 36- and 10-yard touchdowns to Franklinville/ Ellicottville teammate Griffin Chudy in the fourth quarter. New York finished with 319 yards of total offense — 151 of which came through the air in the fourth quarter. Blecha was 12-of-19 passing for 128 yards. “The first half, we couldn’t seem to do anything, but they stuck with it,” Bartoszek said. “Late in the game, it was just nice that we were able to put points on the board and give the crowd a little something to cheer about.”

After two months of 6:30 a.m. soccer workouts, summer soccer games and running in the sweltering sauna of an Ellicottville summer, the Ellicottville Central School girls are ready for the 2018-19 soccer season. With Aug. 13 just around the corner, ECS girls’ soccer players are pushing themselves to see who can best the Cooper (1.5 miles in 12 minutes), the glorious kickoff to the season. This year, Mary Neilon and Jenn McAndrew will return as coaches for the varsity team, Katie Taylor as junior varsity coach, and Tammy Eddy as coach for the “mod squad.” Each coach brings something different to the table, not only advocating for physical fitness and mindful skill practice, but also teaching life skills that these girls will never forget. Though Ellicottville girls’ soccer players pride themselves on their soccer prowess, academics, sportsmanship,
and teamwork are strongly emphasized as the markings of an exemplary player. Taylor, who is approaching her ninth season of coaching at ECS, is always excited at the prospect of a new season. An ECS soccer player herself from 199499, Taylor was a part of the back-to-back state champion team of ’98 and ’99. “The thing I look forward to the most each season is the new group of girls,” Taylor says. “It’s exciting to get to know each other and learn how to play with new people.” “This season may be different from previous ones because of our combined numbers with West Valley,” she continues. “We have always been a D school, but with numbers this year, we would be bumped up to a C school for playoffs.” With this in mind, ECS girls are pushing themselves harder than ever before. Kayleigh Coolidge, upcoming senior, is ready
for the challenge. “I have been playing soccer with the school for six years,” Coolidge says. “As a senior on varsity, I want to guide and lead with positivity and show everyone what this soccer team is all about. I’m hopeful for a winning record because I think this team has great potential.” “I’m looking forward to a great season surrounded by great people, and being able to compete against challenging teams,” Coolidge continues. Robin Freaney, fouryear varsity goalie and upcoming senior, agrees. “I’m excited to see how our young team will progress throughout the season and adapt to the players we have,” she says. All ECS athletes, including girls’ soccer, will be attending the break-out meeting at Ellicottville Central School on Aug. 9 at 6 p.m. Papers will be signed, health history forms will be completed, and the ECS fall sports seasons will have truly begun.

rolling out a new class called Warrior Fit. The Saturday class is designed to be fun, challenging and competitive. It is also a team challenge that will take place outdoors (weather permitting). Teams of 2 people (ages 12 and up) can register at Core Performance for $20/team. Teams can expect 8 stations with 32 exercises that will test their toughness. Winners will each receive $50 gift certificate to use at Core Performance on classes or Training. The Warrior Fit challenge will give you a taste of the newest boot camp to start Monday, August 20th and run for 4 weeks on Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 6am. Presign up is $100 for all 4 weeks. Be patient. There are no shortcuts in fitness, it all takes work, but most of all it takes patience, enough patience to stay on track and enough patience and self-control to not give into fads and crazy diets. Instead, set yourself for a long run in this, set targets you can actually meet without killing or starving yourself, pick a healthy lifestyle you can actually maintain. High School; Joseph Copella, Joshua Miles and Alison Stadtler all of Olean High School; and Brandon Morrow of Portville Central School each received the Daniel McCarthy Scholarship in the amount of $500 this year. Standup Paddleboarding, also known as SUP, is an outdoor water sport that continues to rise in popularity and involves a rider standing up on a large board and using a paddle to move through the water. According to surfertoday. com, “SUP is a subclass of paddleboarding, a broader concept that also includes the use of arms while kneeling, lying or standing on a narrow and long paddleboard to move around in the water. Paddleboarding has its roots in Africa, South America and the ancient Polynesian culture. Historians believe that wooden paddleboards were used by 16th-century natives to move from one place to another, and also to catch waves for fun.” Today, this sport has become a great way to explore area lakes and waterways, including many in Western New York. If you’re looking to see what it’s all about, Ellicottville’s Adventure Bound on the Fly offers Intro to Stand Up Paddle Boarding on Saturday, Aug. 11 and Saturday, Aug. 18 at 9 a.m. Attendees will get 90 minutes of fun and instruction. This class is designed for the first time SUP paddler but also can be a great class to improve your basic paddling and maneuvering skills. Rivers Named New Cooperative Extension Executive Director By Rick Miller
Richard Rivers, interim director of the Cornell Cooperative Extension of Cattaraugus County, has been named executive director of the association. The announcement was made Aug. 1 by Cooperative Extension president Diane Clayson at the Cattaraugus County Fair, where county legislators were touring 4-H exhibits at the 146th county fair. Rivers, a retired Cattaraugus County BOCES administrator from Duke Center, Pa., served as interim director since March 19. He succeeds Suzann Cushman, who resigned in January after leading the organization for two years after it split off from a joint operating agreement with the Allegany County Cooperative Extension. Her charge was to rebuild the 4-H program, which now totals over 400 members in the county. Rivers was director of Career and Technical Education for Cattaraugus BOCES for two years. “I started at BOCES 40 years ago this month,” he said in an interview at the county fairgrounds. Rivers retired from BOCES in 2002, when he and his wife moved to Melbourne, Fla. There he worked as a painting contractor, manager for a community association and building warranty manager. Rivers and his wife were visiting family in the Olean area at Christmas time in 2013 when he ran into
Cattaraugus-Allegany BOCES director Linda Quick. “She asked me if I wanted to stay longer,” he said, and offered him an interim director post for his old job in Career and Technical Education. The job lasted for four months. He went back to Florida afterward. Rivers daughter, who works at BOCES, heard about the interim director’s job at Cooperative Extension and thought of her father. He looked into it and applied for the interim post, which he was appointed to in March. “I enjoy being busy,” Rivers said. He came to the right place then. Cooperative Extension has a handful of employees, down from the group’s heyday when there were many more employees and an active agriculture program. “As a kid, I was a 4-H-er,” said Rivers, who remembers demonstrating how to build birdhouses. He was also involved in the 4-H Teen Council in Broome County where he grew up near Binghamton. “We did things to raise money for their (Cooperative Extension) building.” “I kind of felt at home here,” River said. “These are good, down to earth people. The job is very rewarding. It’s very interesting.” Rivers enjoys talking to 4-H members. He judged projects in the 4-H area in the Corporate Building last weekend. “I talked to one boy who was shy at first, but he opened up by the third project.”

He feels the confidence that builds in 4-H members as they work on their projects and raise animals for show is one of the most important things 4-H can accomplish. “I’m looking forward to working with the board in developing a five-year longrange plan” for the organization, Rivers said. Working from the results of a four-county agriculture survey, Rivers said Cooperative Extension hopes to expand its agriculture service that had dwindled over the years from staff layoffs. “We’re going to start with an agriculture workshop this fall with the Cornell Vegetable Program,” Rivers said. Also planned are a dairy farm tour and agriculture discussion groups. “We’re starting small and building on our successes,” Rivers said. “We’d like to maybe start with a part-time agriculture person in the next year.” A grant writer, Rivers said he is going to be looking for grants to help expand the local Cooperative Extension offerings. Rivers took the opportunity on Aug. 1 to meet with county legislators attending the 4-H Tour at the county fair. “They are putting a lot of money into Cooperative Extension,” he said. “It’s a chance for them to see what we are doing here.” In the end, he said, “It’s all about the kids. We’re here to support them.”

Tables will be out among the tents to provide a place for families of all ages and sizes to take a few minutes and enjoy the outdoors while they enjoy their samples. Attendance is free, but sample food items will carry a $1 to $5 charge payable through tickets that can be purchased at ticket booths located on Monroe Street. Maps and menus will also be available on a flyer at the ticket booths. Pump said there will be cooking demonstrations and the “Chopped Competition” will be back again this year. The competition is much like the reality-based cooking television game show series where judges sample each restaurant’s signature dish in front of a live audience. Judging of the competition takes place from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday with celebrity judges, 97 Rock’s DJ Jickster (Buffalo’s Classic Rock Radio Station, iHeartRadio), “Chicken Wing King” Drew Cerza (founder and organizer of the National Buffalo Wing Festival) and his wife, Jodi, of Clarence, and Buffalo Sabres alumnus Danny Gare.

Garrett Shea will be performing in the streets during the event from noon to 1 p.m. and 3 to 4 p.m. Watson’s Chocolates is one of the longest participating businesses in the Taste of Ellicottville. Manager Barbara Toth said she’s certain Watson’s started with the Taste from the beginning 33 years ago because they opened the Ellicottville store in 1985. Toth said Watson’s will have their famous rice pudding out for the event, which is something they offer only for the Taste and the Fall Festival. Other treats will include baklava and their special sponge candy, pretzels and turtles. “We’re hoping for a nice day, but not too hot for the chocolate to melt,” she quipped. Toth said the annual Taste event has promoted their business over the years. People who might not normally come inside the store and are walking the streets during the event stop by because they have a display of treats outside in front of the store. “They can just stop right on the sidewalk out front and purchase a sampling of several of our goodies,” she said. “It’s a very convenient way for people to try what we have.”
Cupcaked Bakery and Event Planning is one of the newer businesses taking part for the first time this year. Owner Annie Coe, who opened her business last September, said her first year in business has been great and very busy. She said the community and locals have been very supportive, which was particularly nice during the “mud season,” after the ski season ended and the tourist season died down. Cupcaked will have a booth right in front of their store, Coe said, where they’ll have a “photo-op station” set up complete with an antique loveseat and props. She said it’ll be interactive and cute in pink and blue. “At the Taste, we’ll be offering a dessert bar flight, a cupcake flight and a brownie flight,” she said. “We’ll also be launching our Nutella Cookie Cups and Cake Pops.” Sysco is the presenting sponsor; other corporate sponsors include Seneca Allegany Casino, Labatt Brewing Company, Northtown Automotive Companies and EllicottVillas. The celebration kicked off with a ribbon cutting ceremony highlighted by Aykroyd riding his motorcycle to the front door of the National Comedy Center, and then donating it to museum. Gov. Andrew Cuomo and state Sen. Catharine Young, R-Olean, were among the federal, state and local officials who attended the new venue’s official opening. Cuomo called the project an “economic game changer” for the area, brought to life by “the New York spirit.” "The National Comedy Center highlights some of the most memorable comedic performers the
world has known and will serve as a destination for visitors from across the country,” he said. “New York is proud to invest in comedy and the arts, as we work to foster economic growth and create cultural hubs statewide." Young called the center “one of the most ambitious and imaginative cultural endeavors of our time,” adding more than 100,000 visitors are estimated to flock to the center annually. “The end result has surpassed our expectations,” she said. “The National Comedy Center is an economic catalyst for Jamestown and Chautauqua County that will transform the future of this region.” Project Chairman Tom Benson said the project began eight years ago. In August 2015, ground was broken for the project. Construction encompassed a new 6,000 square-foot building, renovation of
the historic Jamestown Gateway train station, renovation of two historic buildings and an exterior film and video screening area adjacent to Comedy Park. Benson said it is anticipated the center will support over 200 jobs and generate $6.5 million in wages annually across Chautauqua, Cattaraugus and Erie counties. Journey Gunderson, executive director for the National Comedy Center, stated, “What we saw this week was that the National Comedy Center experience managed to garner extraordinary praise from comedians and ‘civilians’ alike. From Lily Tomlin, Amy Schumer, Dan Aykroyd and George Schlatter raving about it, to droves of visitors from all 50 states remarking they could spend days inside, the consistent response has been that this is much, much more than anyone ever imagined. New General Manager Takes Helm at HoliMont By Deb Everts
HoliMont Ski Resort has found its next leader following last winter’s retirement of Dave Riley, who had served in the position for 18 years. The board of directors at the resort officially named Ed Youmans as HoliMont’s new general manager, a position he began in midJune. With over 34 years experience in the ski industry, Youmans said he’s been in the business since 1984 when he was a 20-year-old lift attendant working at Mountain Creek, a ski area in northwestern New Jersey. He rose through the ranks and became chief operating officer at the same resort, formerly called the Vernon Valley/Great Gorge ski area. Since then, he has never held a full-time position in any other industry. “Ski area employment has been really good for me because it changes all the time and there are

Griffis Sculpture Park Summer Festival Coming Aug. 19 By Alicia Dziak
Music and art await at the sixth annual Griffis Sculpture Park Summer Festival! Held from 2 to 7 p.m., this festival will celebrate a day of creativity. Just a short drive into the hills off Route 219 between Springville and Ellicottville lies one of the largest and oldest sculpture parks in the

country, Griffis Sculpture Park. Since the early 1960s, over 250 sculptures of Larry Griffis Jr. and other international artists have resided in the woods and fields of the 450-acre park. Add in miles of scenic hiking trails and the experience is one where art and nature collide. The park is split into two sections, each with its own parking area. The Rohr Hill Road Site is characterized by towering sculptures set in fields and woods just off the road. The Mill Valley Road Site features miles of trails through a variety of terrain, perhaps most notably the semi-steep climb to the area that includes the stage used for outdoor concerts in the park. Headlining the festival
is the Americana/folk band Driftwood from Binghamton. Their live performances are making them regional favorites in Western New York and beyond. Driftwood has been described as “a band with a rock n’ roll soul and a folk art mind.” Additional performers are: The Probables (roots rock from former Big Leg Emma members), Sly Boots Circus (African drum & dance group), Kaleidoscope Sky (reggae and rock) and poet, Autumn Echo. Admission is $20 advance and $25 day of show for adults with 12 and under are admitted free. Gates open at noon. Tickets can be purchased online by searching “Griffis Sculpture Park” on Eventbrite.com.
Park patrons can also take advantage of other special programming throughout the summer. ERA Team VP Real Estate & Vacation Rentals in the Southern Tier of Western NY and Northwestern PA has joined the National Comedy Center as the exclusive Real Estate and Vacation Rental endowment partner. The National Comedy Center is a world-class attraction based on the celebration of comedy. The $50 million cultural institution is in the Western New York city of Jamestown and tells the story of comedy from its origins to the present with a mix of interactive exhibits, a hologram theater, and comedy artifacts such as the late George Carlin’s archives. The center was inspired by Lucille Ball, who starred as accident-prone Lucy Ricardo on the 1950s sitcom, “I Love Lucy.” Jamestown has a museum dedicated to Ball, who said she wanted to see all comedy celebrated as an art form in her hometown of Jamestown. “As proud members of the community, ERA Team VP is dedicated

Charlie Daniels Brought His Southern Uprising Tour to Catt. Co. Fair

Charlie Daniels brought his band to the Cattaraugus County Fair last week for the third time in recent years. He told many in the appreciative crowd that he’d probably played for their parents — and grandparents. The Charlie Daniels Band is marking its 45th year this year. After comparing Cattaraugus County’s mountains to the flat land he hails from in Wilmington, N.C. near the East Coast, Daniels broke out his fiddle and tore into “Fire on the Mountain,” from 1974, bringing the crowd to their feet. Cowboy hats and baseball caps covered most heads in the crowd. Cowboy boots adorned a majority of their feet. Wearing his trademark purple shirt and oversized belt buckle, Daniels, 81, played with the energy of at least someone half his age. Daniels gave each band member a chance to shine with solos. Guitarist Chris Wormer played a wicked “William
Tell Overture” like you’ve never heard. Guitarist Bruce Brown showcased a song he wrote, and Charlie Howard on bass, Ron Garnawat on drums and Shannon Wickline on keyboards also got extended play time. An unabashed patriot, Daniels recited the Pledge of Allegiance before singing “In America,” written as U.S. troops fought in Iraq. Daniels also wore his religion on his sleeve when he sang “How Great Thou Art.” Other songs included: “Southern Boy,” “Black Ice,” and “Tennessee Fiddle Man,” and “Long Haired Country Boy.” Daniels said the band has played the song at every show since 1974. Crowd
members were dancing in the aisles for the song. Daniels cited Johnny Cash as an influence before signing “Folsom Prison Blues.” Cash and his wife, June Carter Cash, sang the same song at the fairgrounds in 1976. Everything led up to the Southern Uprising Tour’s finale and Daniels’ signature: “The Devil Went Down to Georgia.” He did not disappoint — the crowd was again on their feet. Cell phones recorded Daniels’ blazing fiddle playing as it etched the notes on their eardrums. Daniels thanked the crowd, telling them he “left Wilmington with a guitar and a dream in 1958.” This is his 60th year in the music business. “Thank you folks for helping me live my dream,” he said. Daniels has recorded 30 studio albums and 8 live albums. He’s written a book: “Never Look at the Empty Seats: A Memoir,” reflecting on his 60 years in the music business, the last 10 as a member of the Grand Ole Opry Hall of Fame.
Audubon Little Explorers Have “Forest Fun” on Saturday, Aug. 11
Trees do more than just provide shade on a hot summer day. They also provide animals with food and shelter. At Audubon Community Nature Center’s Little Explorers on Saturday, August 11, you and the three to eight year old child(ren) in your life can learn all about trees and how different animals use them. The 10-11:30 a.m. “Forest Fun” program includes a lesson followed by outdoor exploration and a snack. If time and weather allow, a craft is included. The program takes place rain or shine, so be sure to dress for the weather. The fee for Little Explorers is $8 for adults, $6 for Nature Center members and children. excellent opportunity for me,” he said. “It’s a place where there are huge opportunities for me to do a lot of things that can make a big difference in a smaller organization … and I like that.” Youmans said other goals are to streamline the processes, evaluate their offerings and provide products and services with the best value possible for members and guests. He said the HoliMont board has much to offer and he looks forward to working with them and channeling their energy into the organization. Among the
improvements he envisions is the relationship HoliMont has with the local communities. “We need to rebuild and re-establish that,” he said. “Long-term success has everything to do with our local communities.” Youmans, his wife, Kim, and 8-year-old son, Edward, currently live in Ellicottville on HoliMont property. Originally from Fredon, N.J., he caught the “snowsports bug at age 9” which, he said, is kind of funny because he’s the only one in his family that does any skiing, snowboarding or other winter sports. He received
his bachelor’s degree in Business Management and Psychology from Fairleigh Dickinson University’s Florham campus in New Jersey. A thrill seeker, of sorts, Youmans enjoys taking part in extreme sports and other similar activities. He was owner and operator of Daydreams Paragliding for over eight years and offered foot-launched scenic tandem paragliding flights over the north shore of Lake Tahoe. He has since sold the business, but said he hopes to find a place to fly in Western New York.

Members of the Antique Automobile Club of America (AACA) stopped in Ellicottville recently as part of their summer Snapper’s Tour. The tour features a variety of different planned tours
throughout the Buffalo and Ellicottville area each day. Thirty-nine cars from 1915 or earlier and over 90 attendees from all over the United States participate in the daily planned tours planned by organizers and
local antique car enthusiasts Dan and Roseann Gernatt and Paul and Colin Tupis, who are driving a 1912 Ford Model T, 1909 Buick and 1914 Rolls Royce Silver Ghost on the tour.

The Salamanca Garden Club will hold its next meeting at 7 p.m. Aug. 13 at the United Congregational Methodist Church at 134 Broad St. Speaker Lyn Chimera, garden consultant and coach, will discuss how to win the war on weeds. She will be able to help attendees with some of their own unique battles. Garden Club members will also be celebrating the recent successes from the Flower Show. The show included more participants, attendees and successful auctions and sales.

The public is invited to celebrate and cheer on local veterans at Randolph’s third annual Veterans Appreciation Day. Attendees are asked to help thank the brave men and women who have served the country by wearing red, white and blue, wave an American flag, create a banner or just stand by the curb and cheer. This event, hosted by Randolph Area Community Development Corporation (RACDC), will be held Saturday, Aug. 11. The day begins at 10:30 a.m. with a parade along Main Street, turning left onto Bank Street and then left
onto Jamestown Street and concluding at the Randolph American Legion. All veterans — either local, from the surrounding area or visiting — are welcome to march in the parade. Any veteran who has served or is currently serving is encouraged to participate. Those who have family members that are veterans who may be deceased, killed in action, currently on active duty or are otherwise unable to attend the parade are encouraged to bring an 8x10 photo of the veteran and march alongside local veterans in the parade. Parade lineup will

Shade-Tolerant Plants Help to Complete Landscapes
Plants need sunlight to thrive and grow, but some need less sunlight than others. People who find their landscapes are less supportive to sun-loving plants can choose from a variety of shade-tolerant plants, shrubs and trees. Shade tolerance refers to a plant’s ability to withstand low levels of light. Certain plants have adapted this feature to survive in the wild. Plants that grow at the base of forest floors, for example, will get less sunlight than others outside of the tree canopy. Such adaptations enable a wide variety of foliage to grow even though they are not exposed to much sunlight. While sun-loving plants often have broad leaves and expend significant energy to capture sunlight for photosynthesis, shadetolerant plants expend less energy and tend to be more efficient consumers of soil nutrients and sunlight. Penn State Extension’s Plant and Pests division says the amount of shade a plant is growing under will directly affect the density of the foliage and the plant’s flowering and fruiting characteristics. Blending shade-tolerant plants into the landscape can be an effective use of space. Before choosing plants for
an existing landscape, it’s important to assess the level of shade or sun the plants will receive. ¡ Heavy shade: Heavy shade is when no direct sunlight reaches a plant. This occurs at the base of northern-facing walls or beneath thick tree canopies. ¡ Full sun: Areas that receive full sun enjoy direct sunlight between six and eight hours per day. ¡ Moderate shade: These sites have reflected sunlight that may come off of water features. ¡ Light shade: Plants in these areas will get partially filtered or dappled sunlight. Once homeowners understand which type of shade they are dealing with, they can then visit plant nurseries and select their plants. Most greenery comes with care instructions that include recommendations regarding the amount of shade/sunlight the plant will need to do well. Those who are looking for some preliminary guidance when it comes to selecting shade-tolerant shrubs, plants or trees can consult the following list. ¡ Bleeding heart: Bleeding heart, or Dicentra spectabilis, is typically found in woodlands. It’s a perennial in the poppy family that produces mounded foliage and arching vine-like stems of heart-shaped flowers in the spring. ¡ Amethyst flower: Browallia hybrids offer star-shaped blooms of blue and violet. These plants will billow out of hanging baskets or containers, and they prefer warm shade or filtered sunlight. ¡ Coleus: The coleus, Solenostemon scutellarioides, is another perennial that can have a variety of different leaf colors and striations. ¡ Bayberry: Myrica pensylvanica can grow in partial shade as a hedge or natural property divider. The leaves of this shrub are aromatic when crushed. The shrub will produce tiny, gray/ white fruits in late summer. Shade-tolerant plants can make welcome additions to the landscape, offering greenery and color in the darker areas of a property.
