The Heat is On at Jazz and Blues Weekend Grab your dancin’ shoes and head into the village for a weekend of non-stop music! Jazz and Blues Weekend is here, so get ready to take in some bluesy guitar riffs, kick back and enjoy! The weekend features the performers in EVL’s hot spots and also street-side at the Winery of Ellicottville Main Stage, located on Monroe Street. Head out on Friday, July 24 and check out Hoagy and the Blues Bombers at Madigan’s at 5 p.m., and jazz and blues duo at Tips Up at 6:30 p.m. Tommy Z performs at Balloons at 7 p.m. with Memphis vocalist and harmonica player Brandon Santini. Stop by the Armor Inn for Jarekus Singleton at 8 p.m., and head to the Gin Mill for local favorites 2 Guys Drinkin’ Blues at 9 p.m. On Saturday, check out the high-energy, jamming blues/ funk/gospel stylings of Miller and the Other Sinners at the Armor Inn at 3 p.m., the Mick Hayes Band at Madigan’s at 5 p.m., B.D. Lenz at Balloons at 6 p.m., and the Blue Lights Blues Band at the Gin Mill at 9 p.m. Make Sunday a “funday” by getting in even more live music. NEW – Winter Arts Festival Nov. 21-22 By Eva Potter

Ellicottville is known for showing visitors a good time and providing new experiences, so it’s not a surprise that there’s a new festival with an artistic bent taking place November 21-22 this year. Holiday Valley is hosting the first annual Winter Arts Festival, produced by the Cattaraugus County Arts Council (CCAC). The event, which in past years has been known as the Routes to Art Holiday Sale, has been transformed to include so much more. This two-day, juried art exhibition and sale is known for its quality and selection in all price points. Tina Hastings, executive director of CCAC said, “We are excited to bring this new event to Holiday Valley. One of our missions is to provide opportunities for artists to share their work with See Winter Arts Festival page 6

Bowhunters Descend on EVL Aug. 4-9 The World Championship is the final and most important competition of the season for the best-of-the-best male and female shooters in the world, and it is a thrilling event to watch, as well. Hiring in Full Swing at ECS

Summer is hiring season at Ellicottville Central School as new and open positions are filled, replacements are found and substitutes are lined up. At its July 21 meeting, the School Board approved hiring Melanie Van Wicklin as its newest tenure-eligible, fulltime middle school teacher. Van Wicklin, who holds a

Generalist in Middle Childhood Education certificate and a Students with Disabilities Grades 1-6 and 7-12 certificate (pending), also will work with special education students. The board approved hiring four full-time teacher aides for the 2015-16 school year: Catherine Dunkleman, Nicole Rust, Katherine Benatovich and Annette Auteri.

Chelsea Cole and Christina Grant were approved for two part-time teacher aide positions. And Jenna O’Connell was approved to fill a long-term substitute teacher position while middle school teacher Elizabeth Weber is on maternity leave. Mansfield Redrawing Fire District Lines By Jann Wiswall

Mansfield Town Supervisor Bob Keis reported at the town board meeting on Monday, July 20 that he, the Ellicottville Fire Department (EFD), its commissioner and the Board of Fire Commissioners have agreed on the boundaries of a

newly formed fire district in Mansfield. Currently, about two-thirds of Mansfield is covered by its own fire department. The other third is covered by the Little Valley Fire Department. In practice, however, when an emergency occurs in Mansfield

areas near Ellicottville, the EFD usually arrives on scene before the Mansfield FD due to its distance and the fact that the MFD is much smaller and has fewer volunteers. The new district abuts the border of Ellicottville and is See Mansfield Board page 9

Bob Armour has been named Holiday Valley’s new Director of Snowsports, taking the reins from Ron Kubicki, who is retiring in November. Armour will begin the new job on October 1. Armour retired four years ago from GE Transportation in Erie, PA, where he was involved in informational technology, inventory control and manufacturing process improvement. EVL Winery Celebrates Five Years

4-H Helps East Otto Neighbors Barb Lexer reports that East Otto was hit with a ood on Tuesday, July 14, not once but twice! Along with major road damage, some people’s lawns were trashed by the high waters, tree branches and mud. The Valley Workers 4-H Club met up on Thursday, July 16, with shovels, rakes and wheelbarrows, ready to help out the people that were hit the hardest by these oods. The kids, ages 5 – 19, along with some parents and their leader, Carlisle Gross, broke up into groups and went to ďŹ ve different homes and worked on clean up. Lexer said, “We try to teach children that helping our neighbors is very rewarding and that you can do it without having to be paid every time. We are so proud of all the kids who helped.â€?

The Winery of Ellicottville has become a staple in Ellicottville. In some ways, it’s hard to remember the Village without it. And in others, it’s hard to believe it’s already celebrating its ďŹ ve- year anniversary. Since the Winery opened its doors, there have been many changes. “We started with seven wines, and now have over 20 selections,â€? said Sam Sheehy, who owns the Winery with his father-in law, Dominic Spicola.

According to Sheehy, some of the new varieties include a Cab Franc, a Champagne-style wine that will be released later this year, and a black raspberry wine as part of the Winery’s well-known fruit series, that will also tentatively be released later in the year. “We’ve also added six tanks, totaling 3,000 gallons of capacity, and some newer equipment,â€? added Sheehy. Other changes include the addition of a wine club and a redesigned web site, incorporating a new look and feel for the Winery brand. While there have been many changes over the course of ďŹ ve years, some things have remained the same. The grapes and berries used in the wines are still all from New York State. Everything except

crushing the grapes is still done on-site. And customers still get the top-notch customer service they’ve come to expect from the Winery staff. And, as always, there’s something for everyone. “We have a taste for everyone’s palette,â€? Sheehy said, suggesting customers stop in and sample a few to ďŹ nd the ones they like. And what better time to stop in and ďŹ nd your favorite than this month, when the Winery is celebrating its anniversary with great deals? Through Sunday, July 26, all customers get a free tasting. Starting Monday, July 27, customers will receive 10 percent off their purchase. Wholesome Hideaway Offers On-the-Go Healthful Eating By Caitlin Croft

When Brittany Lowry was working in an office in the legal field, she found that eating clean, natural, healthful foods helped her stay focused during long hours in a taxing environment. Her interest in clean eating led her to preparing and selling healthful granola bars and other items to Nature’s Remedy and other area retailers, but she wanted to do more. This week, she and her husband, Job, opened Wholesome Hideaway, which “gives me the opportunity to merge my career with my passion, while educating and bringing clean eating to the Ellicottville area. I want to encourage people to look for alternative, healthier products,” she said. “For people with busy schedules, this can be tough. But now, whether you are hiking, biking, fishing, kayaking, camping or just running the kids to summer sports, we provide grab and go snacks and meals that are healthy and delicious.” Located at 33 Bristol Lane in the Ellicottville Square complex (the former location of Core Performance Fitness), Lowry personally prepares

dairy-free, glutenfree, peanut-free and other items that cater to people with special d i e t a r y needs or requests. She’ll continue to offer specialty granola bars, both at retailers and on site, but she has added many new items, such as fresh fruit roll ups, various m u f f i n s and snack bars, a n d freshly crafted carry-out meals. This week’s m e n u , for example, includes a “Buddha Bowl” filled with turmeric quinoa, v e g g i e s and a balsamic reduction; a dairy-free “cheesy” pesto; vanilla chia p u d d i n g with almond milk, blueberries, coconut, walnuts and raisins; fresh garlic roasted hummus; and a steel-cut oat combo for breakfast. Currently Wholesome Hideaway is sourcing from local organic farms including Native Offerings in East Otto. The menu will reflect the change in the seasons and what is offered at various farms. In the future, Lowry hopes to see the business expand into a larger location and to purchase a food truck capable of mobile sales and deliveries.

Native Offerings, the USDA certified organic farm that provides shares of organic fruits and vegetables to its Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) members year round, is opening a farm stand to the public beginning Friday, July 24. The stand will be open every Friday from 3-7 p.m. until the end of October. This Friday, the farm will have a variety of leafy salad and cooking greens, scallions, herbs, zucchini, cucumbers, cabbage and, possibly, green beans, plus local cherries and blueberries. In addition, the farm stand will offer ground beef and a selection of other beef cuts as available, plus several cuts of pork. As the season progresses, you’ll be able to find all of

your other favorites such as corn (coming July 31!), peas, tomatoes, apricots, potatoes, winter squash, apples, pumpkins and many more fall veggies and fruits. And, to celebrate the farm stand grand opening, plan to stick around on July 31 when the band, “Zoar Losers,” will be on site playing its eclectic

The International Bowhunting Organization (IBO) World Championship will crown yet another World Champion at Holiday Valley Resort in scenic Ellicottville on Aug. 9. This year, some 1,700 competitors from more than 12 countries will call Ellicottville home for a week, as they compete against the finest competitors the world has to offer. The competition begins on Friday, Aug. 7, but the festivities kick off on Tuesday, Aug. 4 with

chairlift rides, evening skill competitions, great food and drinks, and a host of bow suppliers and vendors. The incredible display of accuracy throughout the competition is truly something to behold, as it isn’t uncommon to see arrows split in half with the point of another arrow. Such marksmanship is just one of the many reasons why the IBO attracts so many viewers each year. Along with the impressive field of shooters,

the public is encouraged to enjoy the numerous attractions around the Yodeler Lodge throughout the week. Browse over 60 suppliers and vendors and even test out some of their equipment in the vendor village, while your kids enjoy the free bounce house area and learn about the incredible birds of prey. For those choosing the scenic route, take in an incredible aerial view of the course with a ride on the Spruce Lake Chairlift for $5. EVL-4 and EVL-9 Trail Races at HV July 27 By Alicia Dziak

Looking for a demanding workout that takes you through some amazing scenery? There’s no turning back as you take on the EVL-4 or EVL9, challenging trail runs at Holiday Valley this weekend. On Sunday, July 27, the resort hosts runs of two distances. The EVL-4, with a 10 a.m. start, includes 4.2 miles of varying terrain, spanning 700’ of elevation over a one-lap course. Navigate single track, rock gardens and downhill sections. Hardcore athletes can take part in the EVL-9, with a 9:30

a.m. start, covering 1,200’ of elevation in a one-lap course that heads through HV and the neighboring state land. The EVL-9 is part of the Eastern Grip Trail Running Series, which provides the opportunity to meet other runners, see amazing sights,

and earn points throughout the season toward great prizes. Both races begin and end at Holiday Valley’s Mountain Sports Center. Registration cost for the EVL-4 is $35, and $45 for the EVL-9. Registration includes a T-shirt while supplies last,

post-race party and awards in various age groups (U19, 2029, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, 6069, 70+), as well as door prizes from race sponsors. Number pickup and registration will take place on Saturday, July 25 at Ellicottville Brewing Company from 5-7 p.m. and on race-day from 8 a.m. at the Holiday Valley Mountain Sports Center. Movie buffs unite! Whether you like your movies classic, brand new, indoors or out, there’s no shortage of amazing venues to check them out this summer. Free? Yes please! Last year, thanks to money raised from Sally Marsh’s Hootenanny fundraisers, including last summer’s Smokey Bear’s 70th birthday celebration, donations were able to bring back an Allegany State Park tradition. Now park guests can enjoy free movies in the Quaker Amphitheater weekend nights throughout the summer. Upcoming movies, which start at 9 p.m., include Pollyanna on July 24 and The Shaggy Dog on Aug. 8. Spending the night under the stars at a drive-in movie is a memory in the making. While this type of theater is not as popular as it once was, it’s still just as fun as you remember, and we’re lucky to have two drive-in theaters within a short drive of Ellicottville. Delevan Twin Drive-In, located on Route 16 in Delevan, gives you lots of bang for your buck with its double features, and two screens give you even more options. Cost is $8 adults, $5 kids ages 5-12. The Ellicottville/Little Valley 11-12 Girls Softball All Stars, led by coaches Jeff Horth and Kevin Andrews, were the darlings of this year’s Little League tournaments. They hosted the District 2 tourney at Ellicottville Central School (ECS) during July 4th week and came away as District 2 champs. The team was led by Emma Rupp and Courtney Sexton, who both pitched masterfully for ECLV. The girls moved on to Sectional play in Fredonia the next week and dominated sectionals, not losing a game. In game one, the ECLV ladies knocked Dunkirk into submission with a 15-0, fourinning game. The girls were led by Lexi Wulf, Emily Horth, Sydney Preston, Jillian Tomsick and Meagan Ellis. Next they faced Grand Island in game two and were getting beat when the girls dug deep from a 5+ run deficit and roared back to win 16-14. Izzy Deliman and Emma Rupp led ECLV on the field. The girls then again met Grand Island in the finals and won in easy fashion 12-1 in 4 innings. The team was led by Jenna Hadley, Lexi Wulf, Courtney Sexton and Emily Horth. This victory advanced the team to the NY State Championships in Fishkill last week. The ECLV ladies, being one of the smaller teams, fought hard but lost three games in the round robin tourney. Although they did not win, this is the first time in a very long time that a District 2 softball squad advanced to the State Championships. The community came together to

support them as they donated over $5,000 in funds to help defray the cost for the families’ week-long trip. The team would like to THANK everyone who helped them as they played for themselves and their communities. In regular season play, the Standing Seam Pirates softball team from Ellicottville won the age 9-10 softball title with a 13-1 record. The CJ Logging Dodgers Majors baseball team from Little Valley won the age 11-12 baseball title with a 10-3 record overall. The ECLV/ Franklinville Junior Baseball 13-14 year olds completed their season with an 8-4 record on the season. In All-Star play, the ECLV 9-10 boys’ baseball team competed in the District 2 competition in Portville and was ousted from the double elimination tourney after two games. In the 11-12 division, Coach Mike Burroughs took a strong team to District play and won their 1st game over Friendship in fine fashion, with Ellicottville’s Clayton Rowland crushing a grand slam to fuel the team to victory. The boys faced Olean/Portville next and did not fare so well and were then ousted by Cuba in their last game. The team was led by Nicholas Burroughs and Nicholas Savidge offensively in the last two games. The ECLV 13-14 Junior Softball team led by Coach Matt Ellis faced off against District 1 Buffalo River Rock for the Far West softball title on July 11th in a best of three series at ECS. In Game one, ECLV put forth a dominant performance and won 12-4.

The team was led by Allison Fisher and Linnea Jimerson of Ellicottville and Candice Mozes of Cattaraugus offensively. The ladies were not so lucky in game two as they had a six run lead and lost on the final at-bats, losing by one run. In Game 3 it was a back and forth affair, but Buffalo River Rock won on their last at-bat which advanced them to the NY State Tourney in Chatham. The ECLV/Franklinville Jr. Baseball All Stars hosted the District 2 tourney at ECS beginning on July 10th. The boys came out in game one and had 20+ hits in a 16-8 win over Cuba. Isaac Kopp of Franklinville got the win, while Ben Mooney, Jake Peters, Griffin Chudy, Cooper Pritchard and Evan Palmatier each had 2+ hits to lead the charge. In Game 2, the boys faced Fillmore/Belfast in a back and forth seesaw battle, but lost 16-14. Gage Farrington, Mooney, Peters and Vinnie Marchese each had multiple hits. On day three, the boys beat Allegany 9-8 on a great throw-out play at the plate. The team had 15+ hits in this game with Evan Palmatier, Cooper Pritchard, Ben Mooney, Gage Farrington, Thomas Hackett having multiple hits. The boys returned to action on Wednesday and were knocked out of the tourney by a strong Wellsville squad, but they did not go quietly as they were down 13-4 going into the final 2 innings and stormed back to lose only by 3, 16-13. They finished tied for 3rd in the tourney with Wellsville.

The board also approved five new textbooks, four of which are for three new JCClevel business courses being introduced this year. The new books include American History for grades 7-8 and the following titles for the JCClevel courses: Foundations of Business; Focus on Personal Finance; High School Financial Planning Program (modules 1-6); College Accounting (chapters 1-12). In other business, Superintendent Mark Ward reported that, based on the latest information from the

county, the expected tax increase for the 2015-16 school year will be roughly 2.37%, which is much lower than expected due to higher District property assessments. Ward also reported that progress on the school’s various construction projects is impressive. Wall and floor tiling is under way, the gym floor is being installed, roofs are being repaired, ventilation in the Elementary wing has begun and equipment is being delivered. In addition, construction of the new vestibule at the south entrance has begun. Ward predicts that much of the new space could be ready

for occupancy by the start of the school year. Middle/High School Principal Bob Miller reported that 12 students are taking 18 summer school classes this year and 30 students are signed up for Regents Exam review classes in preparation for retaking exams in August. Some students are doing the review course in order to pass certain subjects for the first time; others are working to improve their scores. The next meeting of the School Board will be held on August 25 at 7:30 p.m. in the high school library.

New HV Snowsports Director Continued from front page

he has never been far from his skis, working part time in the ski industry ever since college when, in 1969, he started at Peek‘n Peak. He served for a year as Ski School Director there, then stayed on as a parttime instructor on weekends and some weeknights for another 40 years. He retired from Peek’n Peak in 2010, but was lured to Holiday Valley in 2012 to become adult skiing supervisor, working with Kubicki and the entire snowsports staff. His wife, Karen, also is a full-time ski instructor at

Holiday Valley. Armour’s athleticism isn’t limited to the ski slopes. He’s also an avid cyclist, played tennis on a U.S. Tennis Association travel team and practiced Taekwondo. Little known fact: He’s also a self-taught keyboardist who played in the Erie-based rock band Thirst’n Howl for eight years and won the 2010 Rock Erie Award as the region’s top keyboard player. “Bob is a great fit for Holiday Valley,” said Jane Eshbaugh, the resort’s marketing director. “He already knows the

resort and the customers, and we know he’s highly organized and level-headed, has technological expertise and is a strong leader. He’ll be a real asset as Holiday Valley continues to work to develop new skiers and snowboarders into life-long enthusiasts.” Armour says he’s looking forward to getting started on the new job and working with Kubicki to ensure a smooth transition. He’s also looking forward to “working with our guests to help create for them an exceptional experience.”

physically several miles closer to the Ellicottville Fire Hall than it is to the Mansfield Fire Hall. The intent of the agreement is to provide faster emergency response in this area. Roughly speaking, the area to be covered by the EFD includes Ellicottville Maples Road to Hencoop Hollow, up Watson to Windsor, across Windsor to Rt. 242, up 242 to Whig, and back into Ellicottville. Properties on both sides of these roads are included in the new district. An official map of the area will be shared with the community once the contract is finalized by the end of 2015. Meanwhile, Mansfield is still

working with the Ellicottville entities to calculate fire taxes for the new district. Ellicottville property owners currently pay less fire tax ($.53 per $1000 of assessed property value) than do Mansfield property owners, who pay $.87/$1000. The new Ellicottville/Mansfield fire district property owners likely will be taxed at the same rate as Ellicottville property owners. Because fewer properties will be paying into the other two Mansfield fire districts, those property owners may pay a few cents more (but no more than 2% more). Those numbers will be determined by the Mansfield board after the Little Valley district is renegotiated

and final calculations can be made. In other business, the board reviewed a preliminary 201516 municipal insurance policy renewal from The Evans Agency. The policy provides coverage for all property, including buildings, vehicles and tools, and provides liability, crime, fire, theft, disability and other important coverage. Account Executive Randy Glenn was asked to double check or change a few items for the board; a final draft with updated premium numbers will be provided before the next board meeting, which is scheduled for Monday, August 17 at 7 p.m. in the Mansfield Town Hall.

Salamanca Flower & Art Show, Aug. 1 The Salamanca Garden Club is proud to announce its upcoming Flower and Art Show to be held on Saturday, August 1 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the United Congregational Methodist Church at 134 Broad Street, Salamanca.
