With so many area waterways and trails, you have your pick! Boating There aren’t many activities as synonymous with warm weather as getting out on the water. While swimming is a great way to cool off, getting out in or on a watercraft can add variety to your daily water intake. Looking for a new kind of adventure? Try stand up paddleboarding! Stand up paddleboards (SUPs) are just what the name implies: surfboard-looking watercrafts that are designed for the rider to—you guessed it—stand up on, while using a paddle to get around. Locally, SUPs can be purchased at Ellicottville’s City Garage and Adventure Bound, which also carries kayaks. Some cool places to take your SUP or kayak? Lake Erie, Cattaraugus Creek, the Allegheny River, Allegany State Park and Kinzua Reservoir. Of course, you don’t have to commit to purchasing a watercraft to enjoy it. Hike up to Holiday Valley’s Spruce Lake on summer weekends and enjoy standup paddleboarding, kayaking wih Adventure Bound on the Fly. Open weather permitting Saturdays and Sundays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., guests can enjoy equipment rentals and demos on the lake. You can also head to Allegany State Park and rent SUPs and kayaks, along with row boats, paddle boats and canoes at the Red House Boathouse, located adjacent to Red House beach. The all-new Quaker Boathouse, located on the beach at Quaker Lake, will be open soon, offering the same rentals. Allegany Rocks the Park July 21

The Ellicottville Chamber of Commerce, with the help of many of the musical venues in the village, presents a lineup of great music from July 28 to July 30 during the annual Jazz and Blues Weekend. The best part? It’s FREE! This year’s lineup consists of no less than 15 acts spread throughout seven venues, including The Winery of Ellicottville Mainstage on Monroe Street. On Saturday at 1 p.m., The Mick Hayes Band will take the stage. Mick Hayes’ Blues guitar work has been described as being “soulful, so melodic, so downright dirty,” with his vocals having the same caliber of acclaim. Hayes has

It can all be yours to enjoy at Allegany State Park’s 6th annual Rock the Park! This year’s event takes place on July 21 at the Quaker Beach area. Spruce Lake Operations

Located at the top of the mountain and western-most end of Holiday Valley’s property is Spruce Lake, a 64 million-gallon body of water constructed in the summer of 2006. Not only did its construction double the amount of water available for snowmaking each winter, but it also created a beautiful area for lakeside recreation. Spruce Lake is open daily and access to the lake is free of charge. However, due to continued misuse of the property, Spruce Lake will now close every night at dusk. Overnight camping is not permitted. Holiday Valley asks that everyone carry out everything they brought, including trash. Motorized vehicles are not permitted beyond the gates. Alcohol is not permitted in the Spruce Lake area. Spruce Lake is private property and Holiday Valley asks visitors to be respectful

Then, continue straight ahead on the dirt road to the parking area at the lake. The resort advises using a vehicle equipped with 4WD for traveling up the dirt road to Spruce Lake. The lake is a mildly strenuous hike up the road or from the base of Tannenbaum, just simply follow the Spruce Lake chair lift up the hill to the top. Starting Aug. 5 , the Spruce Lake chair lift will operate from 11 a.m. - 5 p.m.(weather permitting), offering rides up and down for $7 per person. Once atop, visitors may choose to ride back down or take a scenic hike down one of the resort’s many trails.

Summer is my favorite time of year. When I was a kid, it was about staying up late, sleeping in late and filling the days with the types of activities we never had time for during the school year. These days, as a parent, I love giving my kids the same kind of experience. There are so many local places we only seem to have time to visit in the summer months, and also special events that only happen this time of year: the county fairs, the local festivals, and all the things that help make this area so great. Every week, we feature so many different things to do with or without kids. Outer Harbors for numerous opportunities to rent kayaks, SUPs and water bikes. Beaches There’s nothing quite like a day at the beach in the summer months. Whether you like to splash in the water or stay on shore building sandcastles or collecting sea glass, the beaches of WNY offer something for everyone this summer. Lake Erie Beaches Head to Lake Erie for endless views of the water and hours of fun in the sun. Woodlawn Beach State Park, at S-3580 Lakeshore Road in Blasdell, offers a beautiful, one-mile long natural sand beach with panoramic views. Woodlawn Beach supports a diversity of wildlife habitats including one of the finest freshwater sand dune areas remaining on Lake Erie. Recreational opportunities include picnicking, beach volleyball, nature trails and a playground on the beach. A nature center/bathhouse complex, with exhibits that highlight the park’s natural history, is connected to the beach by an interpretive nature boardwalk through wooded wetlands. This park is operated by the Town of Hamburg through a partnership agreement with the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation. For information on the water report for swimming, hours of operation, prices and additional phone numbers call 826-1930. Bennett Beach, located at 8276 Old Lake Shore Road in Angola, features an open beach (swimming does not open until 11 a.m.; the park itself opens at 10 a.m.). There are no shelters here, but there are grills and picnic tables. For more info, call (716) 947-5660. Hanover Town Beach, at South Shore Drive in Irving, offers a sandy, lifeguarded public beach, picnic pavilion, charcoal grills, playground, restrooms and parking area, free to the public and handicap accessible. For more info, call (716) 934-2273. Sunset Bay USA, at 1028 South Shore Drive in Irving, along with Cabana Sam’s Sunset Bay Grill, is located on 5 acres of clean, daily groomed beaches. On top of the beach,

bars and restaurants, a video game arcade, an ice cream stand, and a clothing and beach boutique are provided for your enjoyment and shopping pleasure. For more info, call (716) 934-9953. Evangola State Park, at 10191 Old Lake Shore Road in Irving, features a beautiful arc-shaped shoreline and natural sand beach. In addition to swimming, the park has picnic facilities, baseball and soccer fields, tennis and basketball courts, 80 campsites and a nature center in the campground area. Point Gratiot Park, at Point Drive & Route 5 in Dunkirk, offers lifeguarded swimming, a playground, picnic area, pavilions and restrooms, as well as trails for bicycling and shore fishing. Wright Park, at 198 Lake Front Blvd in Dunkirk, features lifeguarded beaches, ballfields, a basketball court, street hockey court, picnicking, playgound, skatepark, snack bar, and a sand volleyball court. The beaches feature a large lifeguarded sandy area with plenty of room to sprawl out, a snack shack and a jumping platform. Beaver Island State Park, at 2136 West Oakfield Road in Grand Island, is located on the upper Niagara River. The 950 acre park has a half-mile sandy beach for swimming, adjacent 80 slip marina with both seasonal and transient boat slips, fishing access, car-top boat launch, multiple canoe/kayak launches, bike and nature trails, nature center, playgrounds, picnic areas, athletic fields, horseshoe pits, an 18 hole championship disc golf course, an 18-hole championship golf course. Biking If staying on shore is more up your alley, how about a bike ride instead? The Red House Boathouse at ASP also offers cruiser bike rentals. Take the paved bike path around the lake and enjoy unmatched views of the park. If backcountry biking appeals to you, ASP also maintains miles of mountain biking trails. Or head back to EVL and navigate the trails at Holiday Valley, the neighboring state land or in and around the picturesque town and village.

Suzann Tighe, Executive Director for Cornell Cooperative Extension in Cattaraugus County is thrilled to announce that our 4-H Program was recently awarded a grant in the amount of $1,260 from the Topeka based, Justin Corbet Memorial Shooting Sports Foundation, Inc. We are extremely grateful to them for assisting us with the funds to purchase Archery equipment for our local program. The Cattaraugus County 4-H Shooting Sports Program is designed to help our 4-H youth develop leadership skills, discipline, safety and knowledge of archery and

shotgun. The funds will also support the engineering and science materials needed to make and maintain our shooting sports equipment. Justin Corbet was a young man, whose life was tragically cut short, who truly loved the great outdoors and shooting sports. The Justin Corbet Memorial Shooting Sports Foundation, a 501 (c )(3) corporation, is dedicated to his memory and is committed to providing leadership, support and financial assistance to qualified programs and individuals dedicated to providing family oriented hunting, shooting and

educational activities to youth, women and persons with disabilities. The Justin Corbet Memorial Shooting Sports Foundation was established in late 2005 by family friends and associates who share Justin’s love of the out-of-doors and a willingness to help others with the experience. To date, the Foundation has awarded close to $175,000 to qualified organizations. Salamanca Flower Show July 22

The beauty of flowers and the skills of area quilters, painters, and instructors will be featured at the annual Salamanca Garden Club Flower Show, on Saturday, July 22. The show will be held from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the United Congregational Methodist Church at 134 Broad Street. Annuals, perennials, lilies, roses, containers, hostas, and arrangements will be the main features. However, there are many exciting activities that will also be available. There will be a Chinese Auction of garden related items, a 50/50 drawing, and a Children’s Make It and Take it Table. The children will be creating paintings that will be framed in handmade twig frames. These and other watercolor paintings will be conducted under the careful instruction of Darlene Subulski and Nita Yonker. Quilted items from the Monday Quilting Group and paintings by area artists will be on display. Some will be for sale.

June 2017 The Great Valley Town Board held a public hearing and a regular meeting on June 12, 2017 at 7:00 pm at the Great Valley Town Hall with the following members present: Supervisor Brown called the public hearing on Local Law #2-2017 to order and asked Chris Schena to outline the changes that will be proposed. The setbacks for cell towers will be increased, more clarification is needed for accessory building (not housing), fee schedule for temporary permits such as food trucks, descriptions of mobile homes need clarification (trailers, modular, and prefab homes), solar panel installation and usage needs to be addressed. ACTION: The Planning Board will make recommendation for a law to be drafted. Public Hearing was closed. Supervisor Brown opened the regular meeting with the pledge of allegiance at 7:48. MINUTES MOTION was made by Councilman Musall, seconded by Councilwoman Rockwell to accept the minutes of the May 8 meeting. All in agreement. Supervisor Brown announced the Town Summer Youth Program received a donation from the WinSum Corporation in the amount of

Rockwell, the construction of an accessory apartment within an existing garage. Last month, the applicants had been issued a stop work order because they commenced work without the proper approvals. They were also asked to reconsider the design of the staircase that would be inside the propose 133 sq. ft. addition. The apartment will encompass the entire second floor and half of the first. The VPB was happy with the redesign submitted on June 26, 2017. The construction also includes a deck made of pressure treated wood that will be stained and sealed. The deck will be on the side facing the existing home. The ZBA granted the project two Area Variances to allow the deck within 15 feet of Park Avenue and the Floor Area Ratio to exceed the allowable limit. The VPB moved to grant a Special Use Permit, Site Plan and Architectural Review pending the following conditions: 1) There will be only one accessory apartment on the property, located in the existing garage. 2) Neither the accessory apartment nor the main residence is approved for rentals less than 30 days. 3) Interior renovations of the main residence shall not include additional apartments. 4) Any exterior renovations subject to Architectural Design Review shall not continue unless review and approved by the VPB in conformance with Section 10. 5) Any existing violations shall be corrected before a Certificate of Occupancy is granted. 6) No work shall occur except

pursuant to a properly issued building permit. 7) The conditions of approval listed in this Resolution shall be noted on the Certificate of Occupancy. 8) Construction and occupancy will not commence on the first floor until a letter from FEMA is received and meets all village requirements. The motion was made by Sheila Burrell and a second from Jack Kramer. Next was a Site Plan Amendment to 49 Washington (M&T Bank). They would like to restripe the parking lot and it would reduce the drive lane from 24’ to 19.5’. A Public Hearing has been set for the next meeting of the VPB on Aug. 8. There is a proposed singlefamily residence and garage in front of the VPB to be located at 20 Fillmore. Revised plans were submitted at the work session and the VPB is satisfied. This is in an approved sub development. All set backs have been met, along with the height requirements. This has been deemed a Type 2 Action under SEQR and therefore is not subject to SEQR. The Public Hearing has been set for

the next meeting of the VPB on Aug. 8. An application has been received for a Special Use Permit, Architectural Review and Site Plan regarding an accessory apartment to be built in an existing garage located at 26 W. Washington. This building is in the Historic Overlay District and therefore, Section 11 standards need to be met. There will be no changes to the building’s size and the driveway will remain the same as well. This is a Type 1 Action under SEQR and will require a coordinated review with the Village and no other agencies. This project meets the Floor to Area Ratio (FAR) and Open Space requirements are also met. The Public Hearing has been set for the next meeting of the VPB on Aug. 8. A small request has been made to replace a window with a door at 24 E. Washington. The planning board has asked for a picture of the door to be installed and an Architectural Review will be completed. The next meeting will be held at the Village Hall on Aug. 8, 2017 at 5:30 p.m.

Returning to Workouts After Injury

Anyone who has experienced a period of prolonged illness or injury will understand the impact such a condition has on the body. While doctors and therapists may tell you to exercise in a modified capacity, in reality, the energy and ability to do so may not be available at all times in the recovery process. When an extended period of inactivity takes place, the body gradually allows muscles to shut down. This is true for everyone, not only people recovering from illness or injury. For example, people with jobs that involve a lot of sitting will eventually experience a loss of muscle tone overall and in particular, to their gluteus muscles. When muscles aren’t used, the body reduces the metabolic processes necessary for maintaining muscle and allows muscle to decrease. Injuries and illness also lead to the same type of muscle loss and can eventually become muscle atrophy. Muscle atrophy occurs in two basic ways: (1) Disuse atrophy, in which muscles waste away due to lack of movement and exercise, or (2) Neurogenic atrophy, in which the muscles waste away due to disease or injury.

Disuse atrophy, the more common form, can occur in as little as 72 hours with smaller muscle groups. Large muscles, including leg muscles, take longer. When recovering from an illness or injury, it’s likely that some form of disuse atrophy has occurred. Consider someone who has recently had a cast removed; the opposite limb is considerably more toned and muscular. Despite their best efforts, people who are healing rarely have the physical ability to participate in regular exercise. It’s extremely important that you listen to your body as you navigate your way through recovery. It will signal when it’s ready to attempt certain things and when you’ve done too much. Also, follow the guidance of your doctor or physical therapist, as each different type of illness, injury and the extent to which physical changes occurred will affect your return to physical activity. Consider the following things when reintroducing physical activity into your daily life: 1. Take it slow. Allow your body and brain the time they need to begin communicating again. When your muscles are called to action, even in a relatively simple task, your brain and the muscles and nerves necessary to carry out that task must communicate. These channels of communication weaken over time and with disuse. Unless nerve damage has occurred, the communication signals can definitely be strengthened, but this process takes time; be patient. Your brain and body will relearn, given time and opportunity. 2. Begin with walking. It’s the

most natural type of movement for the human body. Swimming would also be a gentle form of movement on the body. Start with a few minutes, listen to your body’s response and gradually increase your time. 3. Reduce your efforts by at least 20 percent of what you think you can do and work your way up. Movement brings humans immense joy. It’s not until you’ve lost or had a reduction in your ability to move as you once did that you realize how joyful movement is. This realization makes people very eager to return to physical activity. 4. Remember that pain is pain. While some fitness enthusiasts live by the motto “No pain, no gain,” when it comes to illness or injury, nothing could be further from the truth. Pain is the body’s signal that you’ve gone too far and done too much. Rest and recovery are as important to reintroducing exercise and the physical activity itself. Give your body time and listen to it. It speaks volumes about what it needs. 6. Pay attention to nutrition and hydration. Feed your body the best, most antiinflammatory foods you can, including plenty of leafy vegetables and sufficient water. Prolonged illness or injury can have a devastating effect on the body. Fortunately, the body’s default setting is health and well-being. The body will recover in time, given the right conditions. With a feeling of gratitude for all that your body has done for you and allows you to do, nurture yourself back to health by including nutrition, positive thoughts, the management of stress and the joy of movement.

This year, CCB is modifying their request list to include clothing. Whether the needs are of a supply nature or clothes, it’s all important to the children! Clothing items are needed for youngsters ages 3-10 and include: Socks, underclothing, shoes, shirts and pants. Supply items needed include: Pens, pencils, loose leaf paper, pocket folders, glue sticks, colored pencils, crayons, spiral notebooks, highlighters, liquid glue, construction paper, scissors, erasers, poster board, scotch tape, stickers, wide ruled paper, composition notebooks…. Even book bags, tissues and lunch boxes will be accepted.

“This year, schools reached out to let us know about the need for clothing,” states America’s Promise Team Chair Ashley Murray. “School nurses informed CCB that children in some elementary schools go through 3-4 changes of clothes a day and most of the time, the clothes are not returned to the school. CCB has been doing the supply drive for many, many years. This is what we do as part of the America’s Promise commitment; we help children! If they not only need supplies, but clothes as well … That’s what we’ll put out into the World to try and help them! Please look for the wagon and donate clothes and supplies.” The national symbol for America’s Promise, a red wagon, will be displayed in each location through the end of August as a drop-off location. CCB will distribute the clothing and supplies to local schools once they are in

session in September. “America’s Promise” members help to ensure that children receive the five resources they need: An ongoing relationship with a caring adult-mentor; Access to safe places & structured activities during non-school hours; A healthy start; A marketable skill through effective education; An opportunity to give back through community service.

Taste of Olean Art in the Park July 23

On Sunday, July 23 at War Vets Park in Olean, restaurateurs and artists come together for the annual food and art lovers event, Taste of Olean/Art in the Park. From 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., you can stroll the Taste booths, grazing on a little of this and a taste of that, and at Art in the Park, see your favorite artists, meet new ones and discover beautiful pieces to take home with you. This is the 68th year of Art in the Park, produced by the Cattaraugus County Arts Council (CCAC), an independent nonprofit organization which is dedicated to excellence in fine arts and handcrafted goods, as well as promoting the arts and the talented artists and artisans in the area. The Taste of Olean is produced by the Greater Olean Area Chamber of Commerce to showcase the best of the Olean region’s restaurants with numerous food vendors serving up their best to the public al fresco. New to Art in the Park this year is “Chalk It Up!” a chalk art contest. A $5 registration fee on the day of the event will give you a 4 ft. X 4 ft. space on the paved basketball court in War Vets Park to draw your chalk masterpiece. A “Best in Show” prize will be awarded in each of two age categories Youth, ages 10 - 15 and Adult, age 16 and older. Kids up to 10 years of age can draw for free in an open area, but there is no prize for this age group. Chalk drawing begins at 10 a.m. with spaces assigned on a firstcome, first served basis. The first 28 entries will get a set of chalk provided by CCAC. Others coming later must provide their own chalk. Those participating in the contest must complete their artwork by 3 p.m. when judging begins. If it rains, the event will be cancelled. For contest rules, go to the Chalk Art Contest page of the CCAC website, www.myartscouncil.net. Taste of Olean / Art in the Park is also an opportunity to recognize some of the artists and restaurateurs. Art in the Park is a juried exhibit and sale, so ribbons will be awarded for the Best In Show, Best New Exhibitor, and Best Presentation. Taste of Olean will also announce the recipients of this year’s Hospitality Wall of Fame awards, recognizing the individuals or businesses who have made a significant contribution to the local food service/hospitality industry. There is something for everyone at this “double header” event: get something to eat at Taste of Olean and be entertained with live performances on the stage, tour the tent galleries, talk to the artists about their work and purchase pieces directly from the artists while children play in the bounce houses or on the playground. Express your own creativity at the Chalk It Up! Chalk art contest or wander through this beautiful park of mature shade trees and relax to people watch at the many picnic tables or in the dining pavilion. This a family-friendly destination for the entire day.
