For many, kicking back and chilling out with some live entertainment is one of summer’s quintessential activities. If you’re someone who lives for this kind of activity in the summer months, you’re in luck. Ellicottville and numerous places within an hour’s drive not only offer live, outdoor music by some of the most talented local musicians around, but offer it FREE. The only question is where do you begin? You could certainly start with The Ellicottville Gazebo Series, sponsored by Five Star Bank and brought to you by the Ellicottville Chamber of Commerce. Take your lawn chair and a picnic to the Village Gazebo Thursday evenings from 7-9 p.m. for a variety of great performances. Upcoming shows include Gary London (kids show) on July 16, Mirage with Vanessa Elder (Nuevo flamenco and pop fusion) on July 23, Tango Sin (Latin, tango) on July 30 and The Buffalo 5 on Aug. 6. In addition, the Town Hall/ Village Gazebo lawn is the place to be for the Americana Music & Folk Art Fair, July 18-19. The weekend will feature amazingly talented local artists and musicians, including a performance by Red Gray from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday. Can’t get enough of Allegany State Park (ASP) in the summer? Head to Rock the Park, happening Friday, July 10 on the shores of Red House Lake. Jazz and Blues Make the School Board Reorganizes Appoints Officers, Hires Business Teacher Weekend, July 24-26 By Jann Wiswall

In the height of summer, Ellicottville is the place to be, and for music fans everywhere, the annual Jazz & Blues weekend is a can’t-miss stop on the summer bucket list. Whether you like your blues funky, dirty, groovy, or anything in between, this weekend has something for everyone. Jazz & Blues weekend is all about bringing people together with the common thread of
music. Take your pick—or pick them all— and take in this fun-filled summer weekend in Ellicottville. Jazz & Blues weekend features an array of performers in EVL’s hot spots and on Sunday on Monroe Street, where an outdoor stage will be set up. This year, the weekend gets going on Friday, July 24 with Hoagy and the Blues Bombers at Madigan’s at 5 p.m. Tommy Z, featuring Memphis vocalist and harmonica player Brandon Santini, will perform at Balloons at 7 p.m. Then, head to the Gin Mill for local rockin’ favorites, 2 Guys Drinkin’ Beer, at 9 p.m. The fun continues on Saturday with performances by Miller and the Other Sinners at the Armor Inn at 3 p.m., the Mick Hayes Band at Madigan’s at 5 p.m., B.D. Lenz at Balloon’s at 6 p.m., and the Heavenly Chillbillies at the Gin Mill at 9 p.m.
The Ellicottville School Board unanimously reelected Carl Calarco to serve as board president and Connie Hellwig as board vice president during its annual reorganizational meeting on Tuesday, July 7, 2015. Calarco and Hellwig served in the same roles during the 2014-15 school year.

ECS Alumni Banquet July 17 Brunch and School Tour Also Scheduled The Ellicottville Central School Alumni Association is holding its annual banquet on Friday, July 17 at 5:30 p.m. at Holiday Valley’s Tannenbaum Lodge. Tickets are $30 per person and include a social hour and delicious dinner. Alumni also are invited to join their friends on Saturday morning for a light brunch at
9 a.m. at the United Church of Ellicottville and to take a tour of the school at 11 a.m. As you probably know, the school is under construction while a new multi-purpose gymnasium and other major improvements are being made. Beginning with the class of 1965, every five-year class (1970, 1975, 1980….) is being

Victor Wainwright and the WildRoots at Balloons July 27 By Alicia Dziak
For a small town, Ellicottville gets some big name acts in music year-round, and this month is no exception. On Monday, July 27, head to Balloons to check out a national act: Victor Wainwright and the WildRoots, which released a critically acclaimed CD, Boom Town, in May. The CD debuted on the top ten of the Billboard Blues Chart. Wainwright describes the group’s sound as “progressive roots music.” “We like to represent virtually every corner of the blues and I think we are doing that in our live shows especially. We are pushing the art form forward,” he said. Wainwright is based in Memphis, but the WildRoots was formed in Daytona Beach, FL 10 years ago by Wainwright and Stephen Dees. “The full band can consist of up to 12 musicians, but I mostly always tour with a four piece band comprised of guitar, bass, drums and piano,” Wainwright explained. Wainwright, who performed at Balloons over the Fourth of July weekend as part of the blues super-group Southern Hospitality, seems excited
July 16 Gary London Kids Show to return to the area later this month. “Our only ties to Ellicottville are the amazing people that come to our shows there,” he said. “It’s a gateway to and from Canada for us as we tour. It’s an amazing spot and the atmosphere is really nice. Everyone comes to have a good time and you feel that when you go onstage there. It’s really awesome.” And what can attendees expect from the show? “They can expect to be very entertained!” Wainwright said. “We take a lot of pride in our

In personnel news, the board authorized the appointment of Cathie Nason to the tenureeligible position of Business Teacher. Nason, who was introduced to the board following her appointment, will start the full-time job on

September 1. Nason is moving to ECS from West Valley Central School, where she was Business and Technology Coordinator, teaching college-level courses as an adjunct professor at JCC. She holds a “Permanent Certificate in Business and Distributive Education” and a master’s degree. While she enjoyed her time at WVCS, the position was part time. “I love teaching,” she said. “Being full time at ECS will give me more time for teaching and getting to know the students.” In his introduction of Nason to the board, Ward pointed to her extensive technology and business experience. “We’re lucky to have her and we’ll be able to activate JCC level courses right away,” he said. The board also approved the appointment of Christine Prey and Mary Jo Stark to the substitute teacher aide list and Dana Story to the substitute bus driver list. Ward said that the school has advertised for a new special education teacher and that interviews are under way to fill a full-time elementary school teacher position. The next meeting of the ECS School Board will be held on Tuesday, July 21 at 7:30 p.m. in the high school library. All are welcome.

Learn Butterfly Gardening at Nature Center Butterflies create a rainbow of color that complements any garden. At the Audubon Nature Center’s Butterfly Gardening workshop you can learn how to plant flowers that attract them and create a perfect butterfly habitat. During the 7-9 p.m. class on Thursday, July 23, instructor Jeff Tome will describe how a few simple plants and paying attention to basic butterfly needs can transform your yard into a butterfly paradise. Butterflies need more than a couple of butterfly bushes to attract them. Many require certain plants to lay their eggs on. Many caterpillars only eat from one family of plants or even only one particular plant. While butterflies seem to appear like magic in some yards and to only fly through others, you can learn how to make the butterflies stay in your yard by providing the food, habitat and shelter they require for all stages of their lives. Discover how to create butterfly habitat in your yard, no matter how small or large it is. The class will cover

The class will be indoors, with an outdoor tour of the Nature Center’s butterfly garden. Jeff Tome is a naturalist at the Audubon Nature Center who has created a butterfly habitat in his yard through gardens and other plantings for the last 10 years. He spends many hours during the summer raising butterflies that will be released at the Monarch Butterfly
Festival on the Saturday of Labor Day weekend, Aug. 29. Cost is $16, or $12 for Friends of the Nature Center and children ages 9-15. takes part in a two-out-of-three tournament against Buffalo Jr. League Softball to represent Western New York in the Jr. League Girls State Softball Tourney in Chatham, NY. All games will be played on the ECS varsity softball and baseball fields.

ECLV Girls Close in on State Finals The ECLV 11-12 Girls Softball won the District 2 Little League Softball title on July 4 at Ellicottville Central School with a 10-8 victory over Fillmore in a twoout-of-three series. They continued their winning ways in the Far West Regionals with a 15-0 win over Dunkirk and a 16-10 win over Grand Island in Fredonia, NY. The team is now in the finals, awaiting the winner of a Dunkirk and Grand Island game, and must win once in order to advance to the State Finals in Fish Kill, NY starting July 17. a much-anticipated annual event. Proud 4-H students demonstrate their hard work in raising, grooming, handling and presenting their animals before a panel of judges. Fairgoers can tour the agriculture barns and meet students’ goats, donkeys, mules, rabbits, sheep, chickens and more throughout the week of the fair. The fair also celebrates such agricultural achievements as home-grown vegetables, flowers, canned goods and other farm products; county residents will bring their best for the judges to examine and sample before the first day of the fair. In addition to unlimited midway rides, admission to the fair includes a variety of daily entertainment. Commerford’s Petting Zoo is returning to the fair this year with their exotic animals including elephants, camels, ponies and kangaroos. This can’t miss experience will be open each day throughout the week of the fair. New for 2015, Vincenta’s White Tigers will be delighting fairgoers; for three generations, Vincenta’s family has trained with these beautiful animals, and Vincenta is excited to share her six tigers with audiences in Little Valley this year. Also new for 2015 is the Wolf Pack, an educational presentation that allows visitors to experience, first hand, the differences between the coyote and the wolf and the importance of wolf preservation to the environment. During the first three days of the fair, evening grandstand entertainment, which begins nightly at 7:30, is included in the price of general admission to the fair.

On Monday, the Demolition Derby takes place and on Tuesday, the Western New York Tractor Pull will put this iconic agriculture machinery to the ultimate test. Cars return to the race track on Wednesday night for the Figure 8 races, and on Thursday, the fair is excited to welcome Trace Adkins, who is performing live at 8:00 p.m. Tickets to see this Grammy-nominated country star are $35 for track seating, $30 for bleachers, and $28 for grandstand seating and can be purchased at the fairgrounds or by calling (716)938-9146. We’ll bet you didn’t know that 2015 is the 100th anniversary of blueberries making their debut on dining tables around the world. According to the U.S. Highbush Blueberry Council, it took the ingenuity of two agricultural pioneers to build appreciation for these “little blue dynamos” and to create a global commercial market. “In the early 20th century, people didn’t think blueberries could be domesticated, but Elizabeth White, the daughter of a New Jersey farmer, was determined to grow a flourishing industry for cultivated blueberries. In 1911, she teamed up with USDA botanist Frederick Coville to identify wild plants with the most desirable properties, crossbreed the bushes and create vibrant new blueberry varieties. Coville and White harvested and sold the first commercial crop of blueberries out of Whitesbog, N.J., in 1916.” So, in 2015-2016, the council is “commemorating the history of blueberries and the centennial anniversary of the fruits of their labor.” Visit www.blueberrycouncil. org for everything you could ever want to know about blueberries, along with a huge supply of creative recipes that keep these delicious, vitaminrich, fiber-filled super-berries on your table all day long. Blueberry Wild Rice Salad
Ingredients 1 package (8 ounces) wild rice blend 1 tablespoon olive oil 2 cloves garlic, minced 3/4 cup blueberries 2 tablespoons balsamic vinegar 1/2 cup toasted pecans, chopped 1/4 cup thinly sliced scallions 3 tablespoons chopped fresh mint 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper Instructions 1. Prepare wild rice blend according to package directions; drain well. Remove to mixing bowl; set aside. 2. In a small skillet, heat oil over medium heat. Add garlic; cook and stir 1 minute. Reduce heat to low. 3. Stir in blueberries and vinegar; cook five minutes stirring frequently. 4. Add blueberry mixture to the rice. Add pecans, scallions, mint, salt and pepper; toss to combine.
