In EVL, Investment is the Word

Ellicottville is known as a community that bounces back. That’s because savvy business owners and investors know that what’s working in Ellicottville is stronger than one relatively snow-less
season. This is a community that has been working to draw people to visit – and live here – year-round. So it’s no surprise to see a growth and investment boom this year – just like last year.
Business Growth The most visible sign of growth is in the Village, where two new businesses opened just in the past couple of weeks. Monroe Street Brick & Brew, a new brick-oven, gourmet pizza restaurant, held its grand opening last weekend. The restaurant offers dine-in, carry out and delivery within a threemile radius. On Washington Street, The Gin Mill opened a name-sake “Mercantile” shop next door to the popular dining and nightlife hot spot. It offers logo merchandise as well as gifts, fresh baked treats and more.
Editor’s Note: At the end of “Free at Last: Part One,” Dunkleman was being ushered in to Ryan Seacrest’s dressing room before rehearsing for that evening’s live showing of the American Idol series finale. Dunkleman and Seacrest cohosted the program in season one. Fourteen years later, after leaving the show, Dunkleman was finally seeing Seacrest again.
“Ladies and gentlemen, please welcome back, Brian Dunkleman,” the stage manager joked as I walked in. There he was. All teeth and perfect hair. It was just him and the writer in the room. He jumped up and extended his hand. What he said is a blur. “Great to see you!” “Thanks for being here!” “Hey, how are you!”

Rodeo Bucks Into Town The Ellicottville Championship Rodeo returns June 30July 3 for its 28th year of great family fun. The event attracts hundreds of professional riders from around the world and is now one of the largest International Professional Rodeo Association/American Professional Rodeo Association-sanctioned rodeos in the northeast. There also will be more than 150 head of world-class rodeo stock, which is instrumental to having the best bucking, fastest horses and bulls. The rodeo is divided into two categories: Rough-Stock (riding) Events and Timed Events. Rough-stock events include Bareback Bronc Riding, Saddle Bronc Riding and Bull Riding. Timed events

Outdoor Concerts! Food! Pet Parade led by Brian Dunkleman! Fireworks! It’s all here during Ellicottville’s Summer Music Festival weekend. Get to town early and check out the first of this year’s summer Gazebo series concerts on the lawn in the heart of the Village. Acoustified Duo will perform 80s rock to American folk rock from 1 to 4 p.m. on Friday, July 1. Come dinner time, make your way to the luau at Holiday Valley’s Main Lodge. Come have a great time with friends, old and new, and enjoy a tasty meal. Then head to the stage area and take in Friday night’s Summer Festival concert show. It starts at 7 p.m. with opener Funktional Flow, followed by headliner Rusted Root at 9 p.m. Rusted Root, known for such hits as “Send Me on My Way,” and “Faith I Do Believe,” draws its sound from a fusion of acoustic, rock, world and more. Saturday, July 2 has even more celebration in store. Don’t miss the annual Pet Parade -- a sight to behold -at 11 a.m. along Washington Street in the village. This year’s parade is hosted by EVL’s very own Brian Dunkleman -- comedian, actor and Season 1 host of American Idol! All friendly pets are welcome and everyone wins a prize! Brenna Cole, the daughter of Wade and Dianne Cole, is ranked second in her class with a weighted average of 112.74, and will graduate with an Advanced Regents Diploma with Honors. Throughout high school, she has been on High Honor Roll and has been a member of National Honor Society, Band, Chorus, Jazz Chorus, Student Council, Drama Club, Spanish Club, and Varsity Club. She was also involved in soccer, softball, and track. Brenna Brenna Cole is the recipient of the Clarkson University High School Leadership Award and the Elmira College Key Award. While in high school, she worked at Watson’s Chocolates, at HoliMont as both a paid and volunteer ski instructor, and The Barn Restaurant as a busser/ hostess. Top Students Named for 2016 Valedictorian: Kaleigh Hunt to Attend MIT
Kaleigh Hunt is the daughter of Thomas and Shawne Hunt. She has earned the position of Valedictorian with a weighted average of 115.5 and will graduate with an Advanced Regents Diploma with Honors. Kaleigh has been Class Treasurer for six years, is Secretary of the Music Department, President of the Foreign Language Club, member of the Drama Club, Jazz Band, Jazz Chorus and Varsity Club. Outside the classroom she has been on the Varsity Soccer Kaleigh Hunt Team for four years, was captain her senior year, selected as a League 1st Team All-Star and All-State 3rd Team All-Star and was named an ADPRO Sports All-WNY Scholar Athlete winner. Kaleigh is the recipient of the following academic awards: PennYork Chemical Society Award, Rensselaer PTI Medal Award, the Bausch & Lomb Honorary Science Award, National Honor Society Scholastic Excellence Award, Big 30 Academic Scholarship winner, NFHS Heart of the Arts Award winner for Section 1 and is a National Merit Finalist Scholarship winner. Kaleigh is also a NYSSMA Area All-State musician for flute, piano and piccolo; has accompanied the ECS school choruses since the age of 8; is an Olean Chamber of Music - Young Artist Judges Choice Award winner; CCMTA Music Scholarship winner and has performed at the Kennedy Center in Washington, DC with the Houghton College National Christian Honors Band. Outside of school, Kaleigh has volunteered her time playing for many local Pit Orchestras for Community plays, participated in Relay for Life, Ellicottville Town Clean-up and has performed for cancer patients at Roswell Park Cancer Institute. Kaleigh will be attending the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge, MA, in the fall where she plans to dual major in Chemical Engineering and Music Performance on Piano.

pieces of artwork throughout the U.S. and in several foreign countries, he looks back on where he started his art career with humor. “I was a math and science kid, but was fascinated with using the creative side of my brain, too.” “The first summer art show I ever did was in 1998 or ‘99 at the Old City Hall Art Show in Bradford during the July Zippo Days,” Huntington recalls. He credits this show as the beginning of defining his art style. He also credits two of his art teachers with “making me believe in myself at a young and early age,” – Peggy Karasch, his gifted program teacher at Bradford Elementary School, and George San Fillippo, his art teacher at Bradford High School. For ten years he has been traveling the art show circuit, rotating his schedule depending on travel routes, geography and show dates. His style has evolved since that first show, but he’s very comfortable with “Sean’s Trees,” as he calls his collection of artwork. “This is

Avoiding Emergency Vet Visits

By Sheila Fitzpatrick, DVM Now that summer has officially arrived, so has the season for an increase in trips to the emergency veterinarian. There are many common emergencies we see at our hospital which we would love to help folks become aware of and potentially prevent. For starters, as the weather improves, we are all out playing with our pets and naturally, we want to let our pets off leashes. We see a lot of dog bites because of this, so we urge pet owners to be cautious of the types and personalities of the pets around us. Whether we are at the park or walking down the street, it is important to never trust the other dog until you get to know the owner and the pet. We see large lacerations, bite wounds and eye injuries, to name a few. The most important thing is to get the wounds cleaned
up, and get to the veterinarian for antibiotics, before bigger problems arise! But to help prevent such injuries in the first place, keep your pet on a leash! Exposure to wild animals also poses an increased risk in the summertime. First, skunks and raccoons carry rabies, so again, keep your pet under control even in the forest, to prevent potential exposure. In addition, be sure your pets are up to date on their rabies immunizations to prevent the potential for acquiring rabies, which of course, can be transmissible to humans! Porcupines are also out in full force in some areas, and when pets approach them, they can get hundreds of quills in their faces and extremities. Do not try to pull them out! Immediately take your pet to the vet for proper sedation, as the quills can migrate internally and cause life threatening health concerns Orthopedic injuries are also common in the summer. Many folks like to throw the Frisbie or chuck the tennis ball. Activities which involve running, stopping and turning around, make your pet prone to tearing the Anterior Cruciate ligaments (ACL) in the knees of your pet. If you are playing with your pet, and suddenly he or she is holding up a rear leg, chances are there has been an injury to those ligaments. Immediate rest and an appointment with the veterinarian are important, as these ligaments may require
surgical repair to avoid future arthritis and painful joints. Another very common orthopedic injury in pets in the summer is torn tendons, secondary to running over metal edging. We all love our perfectly landscaped lawns, but many unknowing pet owners put in metal edging around their flower beds, which is very sharp. When a pet runs over it, it can cut the underside of the legs and slice tendons in half in a split second. This is an emergency, so get to the veterinarian immediately, while applying pressure to the wound to avoid blood loss. Finally, pets have access to more “people food” in the summer due to outside grilling and deck parties, some of which can be dangerous. Onions, for example, are very toxic to pets. Pork rib bones can cause life threatening obstructions. In addition, alchoholic beverages, if sipped by a pet, can cause severe lethargy and even coma. So be smart grillers and campers and be cautious about what your pets are getting into! Most recently he traveled to the 80th annual Atlanta Dogwood Festival in April, the Bethesda Fine Arts Festival in Bethesda, MD, in May and the oldest art show in the country – the Rittenhouse Square Fine Art Show – in Philadelphia in early June. Just last weekend he showed at the Roycroft Campus Summer Show, on the grounds of the Roycroft Campus in East Aurora, NY. This summer, he’ll be traveling in New York and Pennsylvania, as well as to the Washington, DC area and Massachusetts. Most of these fine art shows are juried, which means he must present his artwork to a panel of judges, often 6-9 months in advance, in order to be accepted in a particular show. For fine artists, a juried show is an indication that the show committee values a higher quality of art and has attendees
that are looking for quality artwork, not manufactured or reproduced pieces. Huntington also uses social media to promote his artwork. “It’s almost equal to doing a few shows – a lot of people see my newest works, and my ‘gallery’ of work,” commented Huntington. He also maintains a mailing list of interested buyers from the shows and has a studio at the Town Center in Ellicottville.
“My Ellicottville studio is generally only open by appointment, but on Saturday, July 2, I’ll be opening the doors to show off my recent works,” said Huntington. Located at the Town Center at 28 Parkside Drive, next to the Nannen Arboretum. “The arboretum – where else would Sean’s Trees be?” When asked about how he creates his art, things get very technical. Huntington has a unique method of bonding fine quality watercolor paper to stretched canvas. He starts with a sketch, or study, of the subject, frequently identifying the numerous layers that he has planned. Watercolors are then laid down as either background negative space, or positive foreground subject areas, until the piece is finished. Sizes range from 6 inches wide to more than five feet. Each of Huntington’s pieces is edged in either aluminum or copper, depending on the color palette. He stamps his name and the title of the piece into the side of the canvas with metal punches that belonged to his grandfather.

The Ellicottville Memorial Library is happy to once again host an exhibit of paintings and drawings by artist Adriana Hernandez. This time, the exhibit includes an eye-catching collection of landscape paintings; colorful and realistic, with a touch of Impressionism. Also on view are several portraits. Hernandez captures the mood and essence of her subject in a lovely, respectful way. Originally from Mexico, Hernandez now lives in Bradford, PA. She is a graduate of University of Pittburgh at Bradford and the Academy of Art University in San Francisco, achieving a Master of Fine Art degree. She has been making her mark as a painter, exhibiting in several galleries and art festivals in WNY and PA. She is a member of The Art Depot artist’s cooperative gallery in Kane, PA. This art exhibition runs until Aug. 31. The library is located at 6499 Maples Road in Ellicottville. Hours are 10 to 5 daily except Sunday. Evening hours are 5-8pm Tuesday and Wednesday.

Summer’s finally here, which means spending hot days cooling off in the water. Whether you prefer clear pool waters or swimming in a deep blue lake, the Enchanted Mountains offer an abundance of opportunities to get out and get wet! Beaches Sand beneath your feet, water splashing on the shore, there’s nothing quite like a day at the beach. Allegany State Park offers two lifeguarded beaches, both of which are now open for the season. Breathing effectively and efficiently during any physical activity will enable you to achieve maximal performance; it is just as important as maintaining correct form, using the correct weight and lifting tempo. Whether you’re lifting barbells in the gym or moving house furniture, it’s probably your natural inclination to hold your breath. Improper breathing technique can quicken fatigue, cause dizziness and increase your blood pressure, which can lead to fainting. By breathing correctly when lifting, you will likely have a higher degree of control and alertness during your exercise. Breathing correctly can help you avoid
weight-room-related injuries. Never start this or any new exercise regimen without consulting your doctor first. It is a good idea to get the basics right at the beginning. Ensure you use a weight, which is well within your comfort zone, therefore enabling you to concentrate on the correct form and breathing techniques. Don’t worry—the weight will soon increase, but bad execution of form becomes habit and is harder to rectify. You will also achieve greater results getting it right from the beginning and a much-reduced chance of injury or suffering from a delayed onset of muscular soreness (DOM’S). Start by doing some deep breathing exercises before you start your workout session. Close your eyes and take in a deep breath through your nose, hold it for one or two seconds and let it go through your mouth. Repeat this for a few minutes. Deep breathing before you exercise sets the stage for controlled breathing during your workout. It relaxes you and makes you more conscious of your breathing. Most trainers will agree that it is more natural, as a general rule, to inhale on the eccentric
(relax phase), and exhale forcibly, but steadily, on the concentric (exertion phase) of the movement. An example of this can be demonstrated using the barbell bench press— inhale before lowering the bar to the chest, and exhale when you are pushing the weight away from you. When in doubt, just remember to exhale during the exertion portion of your weightlifting routine. Inhale at the top of your lift, especially if you are doing isometric exercises, where you hold the contraction for an extended period of time. Keep the muscles in your lower back and abdominals engaged throughout your weight-lifting routine to encourage healthy breathing and protect your spine. Failing to breathe properly, such as breathing in short, quick breaths, increases your body’s production of lactic acid and speeds up your heart. It also decreases your exercise endurance, which can slow down your routine or force you to stop prematurely. Failing to exhale during the exertion part of weight lifting can lead to serious injury such as blood vessel strain, hernias and high blood pressure.

Four Mile Brewing to Hold Enchanted Mountains Brewfest The same business that restored the tradition of commercial beer brewing in Olean is now starting a new summertime celebration. Four Mile Brewing is holding its inaugural Enchanted Mountains Brewfest on July 23. The event runs from 2 to 5 p.m. at the brewery, 202 E. Greene St., Olean, NY. Enchanted Mountains Brewfest
is the first event of its kind in Olean. “Brewfest is something we’ve wanted to do since we opened,” said Gregg Piechota, one of Four Mile’s founders and its head brewer. “We’ve been to a lot of different brewfests and beer competitions throughout the New York, and most now only feature beers from a certain region or just produced in the state. Western New York has a great craft beer culture — new breweries seem to be opening up every day — and we want to celebrate that here in Olean.” Piechota noted there won’t be a drop of beer produced by a macrobrewery at Enchanted M o u n t a i n s Brewfest. “Enchanted Mountains Brewfest is about craft beer and
craft beer only,” Piechota said. “But more importantly,it’s for the people who love craft beer to come together for an afternoon, hang out and enjoy all the different beers that will be available.” Breweries slated to be onhand include: Woodcock Brothers, 12 Gates, Ellicottville, Big Ditch, Keuka, Rohrbach, Rusty Nickel, Old First Ward, 42 North, Hamburg, Resurgence, Southern Tier, Community Beer Works, Gordon Biersch, Long Trail, Otter Creek, New Belgium, Ithaca, Lockhouse Distilling, and NY Beer Project. In addition to a diverse selection of craft beer, the event will feature live music by Diggin Roots and Four Mile’s Taco Trailer will be set up. Most ďŹ reworks are illegal to purchase in New York, however Cattaraugus County now permits the purchase of certain sparkling devices, such as wooden sparklers (but not metal) and sparkling fountains, by individuals 18 and older. Before buying and lighting ďŹ reworks, read these safety tips from the National Council on Fireworks Safety. It was one of the three, or something along those lines. I was too busy concentrating on what I wanted to say. I’d been rehearsing it for weeks. I blurted it out. “I’ve just gotta get this out of the way. I’m really sorry for all the times we didn’t get along back then. I wish I could go back and change it, but I can’t. I just want you to know that I really wish nothing but the best for you and your family.” He genuinely seemed to be taken aback. “Wow, thanks man, I really appreciate you saying that.” I felt a huge weight come off my shoulders. Did I owe him some kind of apology? Did he owe me one? It didn’t matter. Regardless of what happened between us all those years ago, what I’d been carrying around had just gotten too heavy. I didn’t think in a million years I would ever be able to say something like that to him. But this opportunity to come back for the final show was my one chance at closure. And I needed it with him. He said, “I saw you got married and have a son now. You have everything I don’t.” There was such a vulnerability to the way he said it. Here was arguably the most successful television personality of his generation, someone who is perceived as being on top of the world, having it all, immediately acknowledging something he doesn’t have. The stage manager chimed in, “Well, you’re about to have some free time on your hands now!” Our Hallmark moment abruptly segued into going over the script, making some minor adjustments, and heading off to the stage for our final run-through. Everything was going just as I’d hoped. I had just cleared a major hurdle. Rehearsal had such an ease to it, we fell back into the same old rhythm. At the end of our exchange, he opened his arms for a hug. I went with it, and then he improvised. “Hey since you’re here, why don’t you introduce the judges?” As we exited on opposite sides of the stage he called over to me: “Should we do the hug?” I replied, “you’re goddamn right we’re doing the hug.”
The live show didn’t start for another four hours. Kim, the amazing woman who was assigned to be my handler for the day, arranged for my sister and me to have lunch in the adjoining hotel while watching the opening round of the Masters golf tournament. After eating, they let us sit there alone and watch the tournament for three hours. It was the perfect scenario. I got to calm my nerves by watching my favorite sporting event. An hour before going live, we headed back to the theater for makeup and wardrobe. That last hour was tough. I can’t quite describe the anxiety of doing live television. The tightness in your chest builds to an almost unbearable level. You have to pee every ten minutes. Your mouth gets so dry you have to constantly drink water. Leading to more peeing. I was taken around to the side of the stage where I’d make my entrance. I could hear the crowd’s excitement build. The warm-up guy announced “seven more minutes till we’re live!” SEVEN MINUTES. Don’t ever let any woman tell you that seven minutes isn’t an eternity. The final countdown began. It felt like my heart was going to explode. The opening clip of President Obama rolled. The opening musical number. Then Seacrest’s intro. Then the words I hadn’t heard in almost a decade and a half. “….and Brian Dunkleman!” As soon as I walked onto the stage, every nerve left my body. Looking out at that huge crowd felt just like it had 14 years ago – only better. Everything went exactly how I imagined it would. I took in every moment. I wouldn’t change a thing in that 1 minute and 52 seconds. It can never be taken from me. After the show ended, I was led through the halls to say goodbye to Seacrest. He was recording interviews for his radio show. Back to work already. We said our goodbyes, and he asked, “wanna get together?” “I’d love to,” I replied. I knew we wouldn’t. As I headed back down the hall a woman called to me, “Brian, come on in here. We
have drinks, we have food.” You had me at drinks. I entered the room, grabbed a cocktail and immediately saw another one of my old bosses - one of the higher ups at Fox, who was no longer with the network. He was with his wife and same old hot assistant from that first season. I had always really liked all three of them. After a bit of catching up, he said to me: “You know, we were all really disappointed when that decision came down.” I asked: “By the way, exactly whose decision was it?” He said: “Do you really wanna know?” I said: “you know what? It really just doesn’t f**king matter…but yeah.” He laughed. Hard. He explained that it simply came down to whether or not they were going to keep both of us, or just continue with one. They ultimately decided the show was better served with one host, and they went with the other guy. “But I didn’t get fired,” I interrupted. “No, you didn’t. You announced you were quitting before we could tell you. You beat us to the punch.” The last of the weight from the enormous monkey was finally cast from my back. Did I see the writing on the wall back then? Yeah, but I never knew for sure what would’ve happened if I had waited one more week. One more day. I really didn’t know all this time what the real truth was. And now I had confirmation. As my best friend so eloquently told me, “See, you’re not an idiot, you’re just a failure.” You know what? I can live with that. I lost out to the second coming of Dick Clark. They thought I was really funny, they thought he was a better host. Maybe I’ll forever be linked with him. Be the Garfunkel to his Simon. The Scolari to his Hanks. The whoever the other guy was in Wham! to his George Michael. All I know is that I didn’t make the biggest mistake in the history of television. I did exactly the right thing. And it didn’t matter. Does it suck? Sure. But like Denis Leary said, “Life sucks, get a f**king helmet.” I’ve moved on.

There are some other new and expanding businesses coming soon. We’ll tell you all about them as soon as we’re allowed! New Construction The two new housing development projects along Fillmore Street in the village are progressing nicely and offers are already coming in. Another new development, Trail Heights (off Poverty Hill Road), broke ground for infrastructure just days after town planning board approval. Holiday Valley opened its new headquarters for Holiday Valley Realty and Rental Management at the convenient corner of Rt. 219 and Holiday Valley Road (across from the Inn). The resort is also investing a cool million bucks this year on equipment and facility improvements, including new automated snow guns, golf carts and maintenance equipment, utility improvements and more. Ellicottville Central School The top ranked Ellicottville Central School District graduated 51 students on June 24, 2016. It was the first graduation to take place in the brand new multi-purpose gymnasium/auditorium that was completed this year. In the spring, the school district applied for and was awarded $343,647 in NYS “Smart Schools Bonds” which allowed the school to invest in new technology, including 43 ClearTouch Interactive Boards for every instructional classroom, as well as essential security upgrades, including new cameras, a server and software. The new technology will be ready for students in September. And in May, district voters elected board president Carl Calarco to another five-year term on the board, and Robert Van Wicklin to a three-year term.
Municipal Projects Both the town and village of Ellicottville have been busy this spring, as new projects have been approved and old projects near completion. Both also have been working together to conserve and share resources for projects of importance to both communities, including sharing the cost of a new tablet computer for the sewer department and contributing to the restoration of the Village Park’s tennis and basketball courts. Construction of the Village’s new wastewater treatment plant is almost finished. This state-of-the-art facility is not only more efficient, but it was designed to be able to handle decades of new development in the village and in the town. During peak construction season, of course, road crews at every municipal level are in the midst of repairs and improvements. In the town of Ellicottville, newly appointed highway superintendent Tom Scharf and the highway department staff are working hard to complete a long list of fair-weather projects. Scharf is also in the midst of training to use the Cornell Asset Management Program, a multi-faceted computer program that will be used to inventory all Ellicottville roads and weigh various factors to determine repair priorities. In the village, Mayor John Burrell and the Department of Public Works found a way to create a dozen new public parking spots on Martha Street. WNY Southtowns Scenic Byway Dedicated A 37-mile stretch of highway looping from the Erie/ Cattaraugus County border and back has been dedicated as the newest section of the Western New York Southtowns Scenic Byway. This new section runs along portions of routes 219,
240 and 242 in the towns of Ashford and Ellicottville and the Village of Ellicottville. Designation as a scenic byway prohibits erection of new billboards and allows a Byway committee to place markers at certain locations to allow travelers to stop and learn more about historical, natural or cultural characteristics. EVGV Trail Efforts to build a recreational trail linking Ellicottville and Great Valley continue. The committee has re-applied for a $1.8 million New York State DOT Transportation Investment Generating Economic Recovery (TIGER) grant to fund the first leg of a 15-mile network of multi-use trails. Until major funding is secured, the trail committee is preparing for a major fundraising drive and they’re finding creative ways to make things happen through partnerships with local municipalities (notably the town and village of Ellicottville), local developers and students at the Ellicottville BOCES whose instructor, Terry Fuller, volunteered his class to saw the timbers to be used for the trailhead structure. Next year’s class will start construction in September. Traffic Advisory Travelers should be aware of a year-long detour on Rt. 219 at the Erie/Cattaraugus County border. The old Rt. 219 Bridge was literally and spectacularly blown up in June. The detour carries local Rt. 219/Springville traffic between Miller Road and South Cascade Drive via new lanes on the 219 expressway. Expressway drivers merge into one lane each way for a short stretch before the expressway ends at Peters Road. Watch for new crossovers, exits, ramps and signs.

A public hearing was scheduled for July 25 at 6 p.m. by the Town of Ellicottville Planning Board to allow comment on a special use permit for the proposed Stillhouse Brewpub at 6600 Rt. 219. The project review was tabled by the planning board in February at town engineer Mark Alianello’s suggestion, who said the (now former) Stillhouse engineer “does not seem to understand what the
planning board needs.” That engineer was replaced with Carl Calarco, who represented the owner at the June 27 Planning Board meeting. Earlier this month, business owner William Bursee was granted four variances from the Ellicottville Zoning Board of Appeals. Three of the variances were for parking lot easements. The fourth was for a landscape buffer. Town Planner Gary Palumbo reported that both he and
Alianello agree that the newly engineered plans are complete and ready for final review and a public hearing. He said Calarco had addressed all of the issues noted in February, and the plans now largely meet the board’s needs. Board members asked that the lighting and landscape plan be reviewed to ensure that the property to the south is visually protected. They also asked for a signage plan.

2016 Fourth Annual: EVL Basketball Tourney
On June 18th and 19th, the fourth annual EVL Tourney took place at the Ellicottville Village Park, and what a huge success it was! This event really has been catching on and is getting bigger and better every year! The EVL Tourney started early on a Saturday morning and wrapped up the following day late in the evening. The EVL Tourney is a 5 on 5 basketball double elimination tournament, in which it raises money to be donated to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. This year, we had a total of ten teams sign up. Almost 100 of the finest basketball players in the area participated in the tournament. Players flocked from all over coming from Pioneer, Arcade, Jamestown, Gowanda, Olean, Bradford, Cattaraugus, Little Valley, West Valley, Springville, Salamanca, and Ellicottville. Not only did players come from the 716, but we also had two players fly in from Seattle, and one fly in from Louisiana, just to play in this tournament! Event Coordinators Kohl Halloran, Bradley Poole, and Greg Smith worked hard ever since February to spread word about this tournament and organize everything. We had many sponsors yet again this year that all came from the area. We had a total of 22 local businesses that were generous enough to donate and sponsor the EVL Tourney, including Madigan’s, Villagio’s, EVL Ink, The Clinton, Hughes Hotel, Tops, Save-A-Lot, Ole Hickory Tavern, and many, many more. We had a very successful turnout with our concession stands selling Halloran chicken BBQ, burgers, hot dogs, candy, water, and Gatorade. We are very grateful to always have the help from all the volunteers who help out. From referees like Greg Herrick, Justin Schwab, Rich Hill, Brad Stahlman, Justin Forster, Phil Bowen, and Jake Hannahs. Janae Hamilton did a great job playing music for the weekend as well. Also, Debbie and Tim Halloran did great cooking all weekend. Finally, we thank Samantha Woodin, Jessica Erlandson, Debbie Halloran, and any other volunteers who helped run the concession stands all weekend. We would also like to thank the Village of Ellicottville for letting us use the park to hold our event. Also, for providing us with garbage cans and keeping the park look nice and clean. The amount of help we receive is amazing and without the help from the volunteers this tournament would not be possible for us coordinators to run this event. We are proud to announce that this year we are able to donate a total of $1,800 to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. We would like to thank all the sponsors and the generous donations we received. We would like to congratulate team CRE (below, left) on beating Kings of the Court (below, right) in the championship game this year. Thank you to all of those who participated and captains for organizing their teams. We are all very excited to do this again for next year and years to come. On Tuesday, June 28, the Ellicottville Memorial Library hosted its second annual Meet the Author night with local author Alicia Vella Dziak. Dziak, who published two middle grade fiction books, Mack the Invisible and Mack the Indecisive, in 2015, discussed her writing and publishing processes. Attendees received a free journal, courtesy of the Ellicottville Rotary Youth Foundation, and also enjoyed a cookout. Dziak’s books are available to borrow at the library.

Other events include Junior Bull Riding, Cowgirl’s Breakaway Roping and the always popular Stick Horse Races for kids 10 and younger. Plus, a rodeo clown will provide live entertainment between the events. The rodeo attracts thousands of visitors from all over the country to watch and enjoy the competition. Many folks come for the fun year after year. The rodeo is located at 6319 Sommerville Valley Rd., just outside the Village of
Ellicottville. Shows will be held June 30-July 2 at 7 p.m. (gates open at 5 p.m.) and Sunday, July 3 at 2 p.m. (gates open at noon). Spectacular fireworks follow all three evening shows. Be sure to get there early to check out the delicious food and many vendors, and stay late to enjoy “slack” (i.e. more rodeo events) under the lights following the fireworks each evening. Garbage and recycling day in the Village of Ellicottville is on Mondays. Trash may be put on the curb no sooner than 24 hours before pickup. If you miss the Monday pickup deadline, you must take your trash to a nearby Cattaraugus County Transfer Station (www.cattco.org/ refuse-division). Daily Summer Programming Now Through Labor Day
A new summer season has arrived at Allegany State Park. Many park visitors enjoy the park as a place to camp, hike, swim, or just relax. In addition, the park offers a wide variety of nature walks and learning activities throughout the year. Walks are offered on numerous topics, with some being traditional favorites and others conducted according to the interests and expertise of the park’s seasonal naturalists. The following are the ten most popular programs with our park visitors. • The “Tour of the Bear Cavesâ€? is offered two days a week. The program consists of a short hike from the parking area, near Kaiser Cabin Trail, up the hill to the rock ledge. There are three small caves in the rocks, two of which the naturalists explore with the hike participants. The caves are NOT inhabited by bears. The program includes information about the rocks formations as well as the North American black bear. • The “Tour of a Beaver Colonyâ€? is scheduled for the evening hours, 7:30 p.m.during June and July, and 7 p.m. during August. Beavers become active about an hour before sunset. There are numerous active ponds in both the Quaker and Red House areas of the park. Tours are scheduled in both areas of the park to reduce travel time, but park visitors often have favorite ponds. Beavers move periodically, usually because of a shortage of food. Look for many ponds close to the road on ASP route 2. Tours of the Beaver Colony are scheduled at least once per week. • “Salamandersâ€? is a program about one of our favorite amphibians. Due to the area’s diverse forest and freshwater ecosystems, NYS is home to a variety of salamander species. Allegany boasts 15 different kinds from the huge Hellbender to the common Red Eft. A children’s version of this program is called the “Frog Gameâ€?. • “Creek Critters,â€? a summertime favorite, is also a favorite of school groups in the spring and fall. What fun to wade in the creek and catch crayďŹ sh, minnows and insect larvae. Small microscopes

Favorite locations for this program include the picnic areas and Science Lake. • The “Tour of Thunder Rocksâ€? gives park visitors an opportunity to learn about this favorite park attraction. Thunder rocks are located on one of the highest ridges in the park. • “Raccoon rangersâ€? is a program for children ages 5 to 12. The activities are meant to be fun and to teach children a little about mammals, birds, trees and other living things. A popular activity is the bear education segment, in which the children learn what happens to park bears that get into garbage. Why is feeding the bears bad? What happens to bears the park traps? Are you curious? The naturalist offer an adult version of the program, called “Black Bears of ASP.â€? • “Butteries and Insects:â€? Along with their cousins the moths and skippers, butteries make up the second largest family of insects, beetles being the most numerous with over 300,000 different species. Park visitors have the opportunity to catch, identify and observe different butteries and any other insect they choose to swoop into their large nets. Late August, the most widely known buttery, the Monarch, is caught, tagged and recorded for the Monarch Watch program. • With over 250 kinds of birds moving through ASP during the year, programs about some of our biggest birds are favorites among visitors. Osprey, owls, hawks and even Canada geese are talked about in separate
programs over the summer. Learn about the different biology of each of these unique birds, their life cycle, migration, favorite foods. Ospreys’ nests are common in the park and viewed during the program. Another program called “Birds of ASPâ€? deals with how to identify birds by ďŹ eld markings, size and song. • Kids both big and little love the “Fossil Hunt.â€? The challenge is to teach them what a fossil is, and what their existence means. Bedrock in the park is Devonian age, 350 to 400 million years old. Most of the rock is sandstone and shale, perfect materials for preserving the shapes, and sometimes the structure of sea creatures from the past. • The “Edible Wild Plantsâ€? nature walk will give park visitors a taste of the plant life of Allegany State Park. Many things that grow outdoors can be eaten, but be sure you know what you have. The program deals with many common plants that most people would recognize. One naturalist likes to start the program in an area “like your backyardâ€? to look at familiar things like dandelions, burdock, and clover. Methods of preparing some plants are included in the talk. Join the naturalists this summer for some information about your favorite topic, or just to have a good time. Programs are offered Monday through Saturday. Enjoy a leisurely ride around Red House Lake with the park naturalists. Learn a few things about a red, white and blue bird- The Eastern blue bird!. If you have a cruiser or a bike with a basket, streamers, a bell, or ag, this ride is for you. Wear something patriotic , a prize will be awarded to the most spirited rider or bike. Please no scooter bikes or training wheels. All children must be accompanied by an adult and wear helmets. Meet at the Red House Picnic Area parking lot.

July 3 Festivities at Quaker Beach Grab your lawn chairs and head to the Allegany State Park Quaker Beach area to celebrate our nation’s independence! The fun starts at 4 p.m. on July with a chicken barbecue (until sold out) by the Coldspring Volunteer Fire Department. From 4 to 6 p.m., park interpretive staff will be on hand to “Ask the Naturalist.�
They’ll have lots of cool things to look at and will be available to answer your nature-related questions. At 7 p.m. rock out to the sounds of local favorite, Goodbye Dawn. Capping off this fun-ďŹ lled night will be a spectacular ďŹ reworks display over the waters of Quaker Lake— a
