Welcome to Ellicottville’s Summer Music Festival weekend! This weekend is not only about music, but about bringing people together. For some of you, this is an annual tradition, and for others, it’s your first time here, but for all of you, it’s an opportunity to make memories in Ellicottville and enjoy everything it has to offer! Opening the festival on Friday night will be Uprooted, featuring Michael Glabicki of Rusted Root. While Rusted Root is on hiatus, Glabicki, who along with Rusted Root guitarist Dirk Miller — as well as Bobby Schenk on bass and Zil Fessler on drums, who have both played with Rusted Root in the past — and female singer Daisie Ghost Flower have formed a new band, UpRooted, which will be performing at the base of the ski slopes on June 29. The show will feature many familiar Rusted Roots tunes, and it will

It’s almost time for the rodeo to come into town for the 30th consecutive year on Sommerville Valley Road just south of the village of Ellicottville. The Ellicottville Championship Rodeo is scheduled to take place right after the July 4 holiday, with four shows scheduled from July 5 to 8. Fireworks are scheduled for the three evening shows, which begin at 7 p.m. July 5 to 7. A fourth afternoon show is scheduled for 2 p.m. July 8. “There are 10 events at each rodeo,” explained John Kent, who has owned and operated the rodeo alongside his wife, Karen, for the rodeo’s three

Though Ellicottville’s 124th commencement, the unique character and personality of the Class of 2018 made this June 22 event truly memorable. Kourtney Robinson, Ellicottville’s valedictorian, used her time to impart lasting wisdom onto the classmates and friends she’d known for 14 years. Kent said preparations for the rodeo — which has always taken place near the July 4 holiday — often begins in March, when they purchase everything from T-shirts to advertisements and get sponsorships together. There’s also permits and insurance forms to complete. “She does the paperwork end of it,” Kent said about his wife, Karen. “I do the grunt work,” Advertising is essentially up by the beginning of June, which not only promotes the event in a roughly 70-mile radius but also gives ample time for the public to notice the rodeo’s four sponsors: Pioneer Propane, Tim & Bonnie’s Pizza, Domestic Energy and Bobcat of Olean’s Twin Tiers Outerwear. As Kent walked around his property last week, the bleachers and stands on the hillside sat quiet, overlooking what resembled a lawn more than a rodeo arena. This was right before the arena was installed and the small field would be turned something suitable for the hundreds of cowboys that’ll show up next week. The July 4 timing is perfect for the Ellicottville Championship Rodeo,
as Kent said it’s in the midst of what is known in the industry as “Cowboy Christmas” when the rodeo season is busiest in late June and early July. “Those boys have jobs but they save their vacation time or whatever time they can save,” Kent said about the cowboys. “If they live far away, they might leave on a Wednesday night to come here and they’ll hit (multiple) rodeos, or they’ll start here and work their way back.” Returning again this year is cattle penning, Kent said. There’s also more trick riders to celebrate the rodeo’s 30 years. As part of the rodeo tradition, the Ellicottville Championship Rodeo will feature a clown as well. There’s also a kid’s stick horse rodeo for children 10 and under. Gates open two hours before the show begins to allow guests time to come and enjoy the food as well as craft vendors set up near the arena. Adult tickets for those ages 13 and up are $20 at the gate. Health & Fitness: The Benefits of TRX

About six years ago, I was introduced to a form of training called TRX or Total Resistance Extreme. As a trainer, I preach core strength and proper alignment while performing any exercise or functional fitness activity, and this piece of equipment has been instrumental in developing these key elements with
every client I have trained ages 9-92. One of the key TRX benefits is that you are able to complete an endless number of exercises with a single training tool. Given that you can boundlessly adjust your body position to add or decrease resistance, this workout is safe and effective for people of all fitness levels. This is because the center of gravity in the human body lies right above our hips along the central axis of the body. Your center of gravity changes with every move of your body. However, it stays within the limits of the body when you do regular common activities. While moving, the body controls the center of gravity with muscles. Suspension training develops your strength
by utilizing functional movements and dynamic positions that are performed not only when lying on your back on the ground, which is typical for traditional ab exercises. Besides that, the TRX system offers a whole range of movements focusing on abs solely. Body workout is not complete without exercises challenging your back, shoulders, chest, hips and legs. If you were to look around most health clubs, you will see exercise machines with seats, supports and benches. Sitting down while doing exercises lessens the opportunity to develop postural and stabilizing muscles that are critical for effective movement. Training while standing, or engaging the whole body, forces you to control
and strengthen the body’s stabilizing muscles. Integrated exercises engage intensive, interconnected movements, often multi-planar, which require coordinated efforts. This type of exercise enhances the nervous system’s ability to effectively coordinate movement at higher levels and build strong motor patterns, increase stabilization and functional muscle mass. Life demands us to move freely through space, not within the confines of a machine or other restrictive motor patterns. Every movement you produce while using TRX is demanding for your body in terms of stability and direct forces that later translate into better performance in sports and life in general.

A West Valley/Ellicottville Merger ‘Doesn’t Make Financial Sense’

A pre-merger feasibility study of the West Valley Central School District concluded that merging with the SpringvilleGriffith School District would not only be a better fiscal fit than Ellicottville, but that a merger with Ellicottville doesn’t even make sense financially. Education consultants Castallo & Silky last week presented to the West Valley School Board of Education and community members the result of a study that focused on several facets of a potential merger with neighboring Springville or Ellicottville school districts. The study, ordered last autumn by the West Valley School Board, is only a pre-merger study; a full merger study would need to be conducted by a second participating district as part of a lengthy process to potentially combine districts. Dr. William Silky and his staff, which included Stephen Bocciolatt and Dr. Suzanne Gilmour, presented their findings that covered a wide array of aspects including enrollment, geography, educational opportunities, teacher salaries, administration
configuration and tax rates. Nearly the entire presentation focused on West Valley and Springville school districts except for one PowerPoint slide, titled “Why Ellicottville Won’t Work.” The slide presented current tax rates and how much incentive aid — the amount of money the state gives to the combined district to merge — would need to be used specifically for taxes not to increase for Ellicottville taxpayers. With West Valley’s true tax rate at $19.73 per thousand and Ellicottville’s at $8.48, Silky said it doesn’t make sense financially for the two districts to pursue a partnership. The amount of incentive aid needed to balance rates is $1.71 million, or 181 percent what would be estimated to come from the state, according to the presentation. “Simply doing this table told us it just doesn’t make financial sense,” he said. “It just doesn’t.” Instead, Silky concluded there was enough reason based on information presented that it “probably makes sense” for West Valley and Springville to think about looking into a potential merger or annexation.
Silky noted “there wasn’t a great deal of interest” from the Ellicottville school district in terms of being involved with the study. The school was only willing to participate as long as the district would be reimbursed for any cost related to the study, he said. “Even if there was an interest on the part of them, it just would not work,” Silky said. “From a financial perspective, even if we had full cooperation from them in this, it probably would not be a feasible opportunity, at least at this point in time.” Meanwhile, in terms of finances and tax rates, because Springville and West Valley only differ by $2.70 per thousand — with Springville’s tax rate at $16.33 per thousand according to the presentation — it would make more sense to West Valley to pursue a merger with its neighbor to the north. Only 17 percent of projected incentive aid for the combined districts would be used to balance the tax rates, he said. “Our conclusion is that in many respects, your two districts are very similar,” Silky said about West Valley and Springville, “but there are differences, of course.”
The report outlined enrollment — with Springville’s at 1,698 students in K-12 and 215 students in West Valley — including trends through 2024 with populations expected to decrease. There was also significant conversation on the incentive aid provided by the state, as the new potential district would receive approximately $29.84 million over the 14 years following the merger, according to estimates provided in the presentation. Silky said much of that money is used so taxes do not increase for either party involved. The combined district’s geography was also discussed, as a combined West Valley and Springville district would be 205 square miles. By comparison, the Randolph Central School District is 262 square miles. “I’ve been around the area quite a while so I know what 262 square miles is,” said Bocciolatt, a former superintendent at Randolph and Little Valley. “It’s certainly do-able. What I think we are trying to show both in the report and on this particular chart is that it’s not out of the norm of what some school districts do.”

Following the presentation and a question-and-answer session with community members, West Valley School Board members discussed their next steps, which are limited after they approved a contingency budget for the 2018-19 school year earlier in the evening following Tuesday’s second failed budget proposal. “We are a little stymied right now because the
board cannot move forward on commissioning ... for a fuller study under the terms of a contingency budget,” said board president Stephen Kowalski. He challenged the board to come up with a plan that can be presented to the community to decide what the next steps should be for the district. “We need to move forward with what we have and make what we have better,” he said.

Pour 1 cup of hot water over the onion and let sit for 10 minutes. Drain well and add to a medium sized bowl. Add the remaining ingredients and toss well to combine. Cover and refrigerate for at least one hour before serving. For an even more colorful dish, serve with blue corn tortilla chips. The salsa will keep for 5 to 7 days in the refrigerator, and also makes a delicious topping for grilled chicken or scrambled eggs. If you’ve been invited to a cookout
or two (or three or four!), you don’t have to carve a fancy watermelon basket or arrange fruit on a cake to resemble the American Flag! You can make up a batch of Coco Morante’s 4th of July Wine Sparklers that will be a big hit with the 21 and older crowd. Shop local at Cheap Chollie’s, Savage Road Winery or the Winery of Ellicottville, and let the experts help you select a dry white wine. Since you’ll be mixing it with sweet ingredients, a drier variety will offset the sugar. Morante recommends a white wine aged in steel casks rather than oak for a cleaner, crisper taste that won’t compete with the drink’s other flavors. Use a star-shaped cookie cutter to
make about 2 cups of stars from fresh slices of watermelon. Place the stars and 1 cup of fresh blueberries in the bottom of a 1-gallon pitcher. Pour in a bottle of dry white wine and 1 liter of chilled lemon lime soda (like Sprite or 7-Up). Gently mix to combine the fruit and liquid. Serve with a few fruit pieces in each cup. Create an extra festive drink by threading a few blueberries and a watermelon star onto bamboo skewers and place in each glass! School may be over but you can still incorporate STEM activities into your summer! Fireworks in a Jar is a great activity for kids who are curious about fireworks, and is especially nice for little ones who may be frightened by the noise of the real deal! To get started, fill a Mason jar ¾ of the way full with warm water. In a separate small bowl, mix 3 to 4 tablespoons of vegetable oil and several drops of food coloring (try 4 drops each of 4 different colors). Use a fork to gently mix the oil and food coloring. Watch the food
coloring droplets (which are composed of water) stay intact in the oil, which doesn’t mix with water! Pour the oil mixture into the jar and watch what happens. The food coloring slowly sinks out of the oil and into the water. Once this happens, the food coloring droplets will expand and mix with all the other colors for a quiet color explosion! This is a great chance to talk about the properties of oil and water with your children. Food coloring dissolves in water, not in oil, and because the oil is less dense than water, it floats to the top. This is why the colored droplets sink toward the bottom of the jar to dissolve in the water, creating a tiny explosion of color.

For her, and, she hopes, her fellow graduates, success means doing something that makes you happy and keeps you healthy. Life isn’t something you can map out, so holding onto this principle will help to achieve any goal. “Remember that you only get one life,” said Krotz, “and you should make the most of that, whatever that means to you.” Noah Stuve, class president, empowered his classmates with a rousing speech about the power of this generation. “You are the generation that will take technology to new dimensions,” he said. “You are the ones that will bring solutions to many world problems.” Take risks and set goals, he continued, because we live in a free society where we can worship, gather, and love as we please. “I challenge you,” said Stuve to his fellow graduates, “to take that enthusiasm that surrounds you tonight… and use it to obtain your goals.” “Wherever the next chapters in your life story may take you,” he finished, “make sure the journey includes joy.” As the Class of 2018 exited the stage, Beethoven’s “Ode to Joy” echoed in the Ward. Tuscan Moon: A Culinary Event
Tuscan Moon – Gourmet Cocktail Party is coming Saturday, Aug. 25 6 p.m. at John Harvard’s Cabana Bar & Pool Complex at Holiday Valley. Every year, this is a favorite Ellicottville party, with over 200 people attending the upscale, endof-summer dinner party. Sponsored by the Rotary Club of Ellicottville, this is the “must attend” party in Ellicottville. When you arrive, you are greeted with great hors d' oeuvres from Katy’s, John Harvard’s and other great restaurants, served by student volunteers from ECS. Before and during dinner, you will be entertained by Michael Nugent, singing timeless and beautiful music by the greats such as Michael Buble, Frank Sinatra, Bobby Darin, Tony Bennett and more. This event has the best food served at any venue, with an expansive array of entrees provided by the best restaurants in the area. Supported by both Sysco and US Foods, the local chefs will be trying to impress you with their signature dish served at their individual stations. This year’s Italian theme menu is way over the
top, with many culinary surprises to treat those who attend. A fabulous Seafood Medley from John Harvard’s and Seafood Lasagna from Myer’s are just a few of the 12 stations you will enjoy. You can eat as much as you like but save room for the dessert table where Watson’s Chocolates surround the extra special cakes, cookies and tarts created by chef Tom Kneeland. Everyone loves the extensive silent auction as there is always a great bargain to be had and the live auction usually features Sabres tickets, Bills tickets, Cutco Knives and many more great bargains.
Beyond the food and the company, this annual fundraiser supports the many worthwhile local projects and individuals in need supported through Family Support for Ellicottville. Better yet, while you are helping a great cause, your ticket donation is tax deductible. Plan for this great end of the summer party and put Saturday, Aug. 25 on your calendar. Remember that this is Ellicottville so the dress is always casual. ECS PTO Wraps Up School Year
As another school year comes to a close, here is an update from the ECS PTO:
Box Tops Congratulations to the second grade class on winning the year-long Box Top Contest this year! They brought in $216.20! They enjoyed a refreshing popsicle treat. Together as a school, ECS collected $1,094 throughout the year! Please save your Box Tops over the summer, as the PTO will hold a contest when we return to school in the fall. Please be sure to watch for expiration dates, there will be some that expire at the end of June and August. You can always send your Box Tops in to the elementary office or drop them off at the Great Valley Post Office. Also check out boxtops4education.com for sweepstakes and other ways to help the PTO earn extra money for the students.
Field Day Field Day was held on Tuesday, June 19 at 8:30 a.m.— it was a breezy sunny day! Gray ECS Field Day shirts were worn by students, staff and volunteers. Tabs Congratulations to Mrs. Moore’s fifth grade class on winning this year’s PTO Tab Contest! They were able to enjoy a nice treat of ice cream sandwiches. Thank you to all of the crew at Central Station in Salamanca (Jake Link, Mike Link, Guy Nash, Vickie Waite, Billie Jo Andrews, Jason Rickert and customers), the Ellicottville American Legion and other local businesses for donating their tabs to our students. Please continue to save your tabs from cans over the summer as well. Tabs can come from any aluminum cans such as pop, water, pet food, soup cans, etc. We will hold a contest next spring to donate the tabs to WPIG radio station. They donate the money from the tabs to St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital.

also incorporate some of UpRooted’s new sound, which Glabicki described in a recent interview with the Ellicottville Times as “more groove-oriented” with more guitar work. The show will combine Rusted Roots classics with new material. He also noted that the show will be improvisational. “The groove can change every night and the meanings of songs change every night,” he said. “Sometimes we’re as surprised as the audience on where the music goes, and we like it like that.” Opening act for Uprooted will be Buffalo’s own Funktional Flow, a multi-genre quintet heavily rooted in rock and reggae, with a funk foundation. Over the past six years, the band has released three albums and played hundreds of shows throughout the Northeast and beyond. Flow is heavily influenced by Sublime, Umphrey’s McGee, Moe, and Blind Melon but maintains a fresh, high energy sound that results in a diverse catalog of music. On Saturday, June 30, fun events are happening in the village all day long. At 11 a.m., the annual Pet Parade takes place on Washington St. making its way to the Gazebo. Every pet is a winner and everyone gets a prize! From 1 to 4 p.m., the Gazebo Series kicks off, when The Joe Webber Duo takes to the stage for a fun afternoon of lively music for all to enjoy. From 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. both Saturday and Sunday the Arts and Crafts show will feature fabulous local
vendors along Jefferson St. From 3 to 7 p.m., head to the Cabana Bar at Holiday Valley to enjoy a poolside cocktail and music by the Bleeding Hearts before catching the slopeside entertainment. Saturday evening, Dennis DeYoung and the Music of STYX will headline the Summer Music Festival back at Holiday Valley. DeYoung is a founding member of STYX and the lead singer and writer on seven of the band’s eight Top Ten Hits. His live concert with six piece band showcases all the STYX greatest hits, such as Come Sail Away, Too Much Time on my Hands and Renegade. Opening act on Saturday is Legends of Summer. End the weekend with the July 1 with a stop by the Cabana bar to catch the Black and Blues Band from 2 to 6 p.m. Follow that up with a performance of the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra, featuring
“Vinyl Fever” with songs from the 50s, 60s and 70s including Motown, Billy Joel, Beach Boys, ABBA and the Beatles, to name a few. The evening will end with your favorite Independence Day music choreographed to an awesome fireworks display. Opening for the BPO will be The Lake Effect, an award winning group of five men unified in one common goal— the promotion and performance of all-male a cappella music. The Lake Effect is the next step in the evolutionary process of a cappella music in the Western New York region. Gates will open at 6 p.m. for all three shows at Holiday Valley. Celebrate summer with a weekend of non-stop fun and entertainment, Ellicottville-style! East Otto Town Board OKs Property Purchase During June 4 Meeting The East Otto Town Board voted unanimously during a special meeting on Monday, June 4 to purchase property located at 9008 Main St. that was being offered for sale for delinquent taxes. The town purchased the property for $3,200, a mutually agreed amount from Cattaraugus County, according to the resolution presented at the meeting. A motion to accept the resolution to purchase the property was made by councilman David Forster and seconded by councilman Sid Barber. Council members Foster, Barber, William Spors and
Angela Sherman — along with Supervisor Ann Rugg — all voted in favor of the resolution. That was the only action at the special meeting, which started at 6:30 p.m. and adjourned at 6:55 p.m.

Holiday Valley Donates to Community Programs
On June 26, Holiday Valley made their annual donations to several community programs including the Great Valley Youth Program, Mercy Flight, Alley Katz and Ellicottville Youth Soccer, Little League Football and Baseball. These funds are generated at several events that take place during the year at Holiday Valley like the Winter Carnival Snowbar and Fall Festival Chairlift rides. This summer, Allegany State Park’s Environmental Education Department will offer hikes to view the rare Synchronous Fireflies – once thought to exist in only a handful of places in the world. The Photinus Carolinus species, also known as the Synchronous Firefly, flashes only from late June to mid-July. In 2012, the Firefly International Research and Education Team (FIRE Team) came to study the local firefly species, and confirmed its existence in the Branch Creek area of Allegheny National Forest. Adele Wellman, Lead Naturalist for Allegany State Park, and her team of environmental educators, along with
numerous volunteers received training necessary to identify this species. The Park Naturalists were able to identify the Synchronous Firefly and confirm its first sighting in New York State.
Allegany State Park will offer the opportunity to view this special species, which flashes simultaneously in an apparent competition display to attract females. Firefly walks are scheduled in the park on the following dates. June 28 and July 2 at 9:30 p.m. on France Brook Road, Site 29, near the entrance to Group Camp 12; Thursday, July 5 at 9:30 p.m. at the Tornado Blowdown area, Site 68. More dates will be announced at later time. Please note, in the event of severe weather, the program will be cancelled. Cortez named to NYS Class D Third Team

Cortez, who is set to play at Division I Niagara University next season, hit .414 with six doubles, a triple and a home run this season. She scored 12 runs and drove in 16, stealing 14 stolen bases. She also pitched 10 innings this season for the Eagles (6-11), striking out nine and allowing three runs, making the league’s first-team all-stars for a second straight year. Senior pitcher Ally Haskell of Franklinville, who will play at St.
Bonaventure, made the state’s first team for a second straight year in Class D. She again led the Panthers from the mound and at the plate, compiling a .425 average with three homers and 11 RBI while going 13-1 with a 0.49 ERA on 181 strikeouts and 11 walks. Her younger sister, sophomore catcher Dani Haskell, made the fourth team. Haskell hit .432, scoring 16 runs with nine RBI, nine stolen bases and two homers. Cattaraugus-Little Valley sophomore shortstop Lexi Wulf made the Class C fifth team. Wulf helped the Timberwolves to 10-7 this season, losing to one four teams in the state (Franklinville, North Collins, Portville) after a season-opening Myrtle Beach trip. While leading a strong C-LV defensive infield, Wulf hit .472 (.736 OBP) with 18 RBI, three home runs, three triples and nine stolen bases.

Festival Season in Ellicottville
This weekend’s Summer Music Festival kicks off festival season in Ellicottville. All summer long and into fall, fabulous festivals fill the calendar with something for everyone. Get ready to mark your calendars for these can’tmiss events: July 27-29, the Jazz and Blues Festival returns. Wander through the village and choose from a variety of jazz and blues performed in the restaurants and bars, as well as street-side. Aug. 11-12, the Taste of Ellicottville is back, promising to satisfy all your cravings. From noon to 4 p.m. each day, everyone can sample the best of Ellicottville’s fine restaurant menus as they set up “cafe style” on the streets. This family-friendly event celebrates Ellicottville’s 20 amazing and diverse restaurants surrounded by fun and exciting street performers. Judges sample each restaurants signature dish in front of a live audience. A cooking demonstration and competition will have your mouths watering and anxious to try the recipes out at home. Food item tickets are $1 each and restaurants will charge $1 to $5 for their dishes. Entrees, desserts, healthy choices and non-alcoholic drinks will be some of the featured choices.
Sept. 14-16 is Rock N Roll Weekend, presented by Northtown Auto. The weekend kicks off Friday with live music. The fun continues Saturday with more music and the opportunity to shop the amazing local Ellicottville stores. On Sunday, the Classic Car Show will showcase cars, trucks and rods all set up in class order to be judged by a panel of experienced car enthusiasts with awards in each class.
Sept. 21-23, the Ellicottville Lacrosse Festival makes its way back to town for the second year. The goal for this tournament is to focus on fall lacrosse fun and showcase the sport. Come out to see the youth teams, all the way to high schoolers and Masters divisions compete to be the first Ellicottville Lacrosse Festival champions. Teams will represent ages from third graders to 50+ years old. This is going to be some serious lacrosse in a fun town!
Oct. 6-7, Ellicottville oldest and largest festival — Fall Festival — returns to the village and Holiday Valley. Tens of thousands of festival goers make for a lively weekend of unique foods, fine art, and an arts and crafts show, carnival rides, live entertainment and much more. The Fourth of July is a day to celebrate America, and for many, it’s just not complete without a fantastic display of fireworks. On July 1, the Buffalo Philharmonic will perform as part of the Summer Music Festival. The orchestra will feature “Vinyl Fever” with songs from the 50s, 60s and 70s including Motown, Billy Joel, Beach Boys, ABBA and the Beatles to name a few. The evening will end with your favorite Independence Day music choreographed to an awesome fireworks display.

She has been performing all over WNY since 18, performing with numerous bands, playing at bars and venues, as well as partnering up with WYRK, Buffalos country station, to share the stage with National artists such as Josh Turner, Wynonna Judd, Granger Smith, Jarrod Niemann, Drake White, Thompson Square, Joe Nichols, Eric Paslay, Morgan Wallah, Dylan Scott and many more! Head to Red House Beach for this summertime tradition, featuring opening act Jillian Eliza and headliner Marshmellow Overcoat: In 2008, singer and songwriter Tyler Calkins set out to create a sound reflecting the songwriting techniques of the sixties and seventies, while also utilizing modern and contemporary rock aspects. Over the years since, Tyler’s unique rhythm guitar, piano, harmonica and vocals have made him one of the most sought-after performers in the Southern Tier. Having achieved his Masters degree in Performance from Pennsylvania State University as well as a PhD in Music Education at age 30, Tyler’s knowledge in music, songwriting and performance is growing each day. Backed by his band, Marshmellow Overcoat, Tyler has five albums under his belt (in addition to solo and side projects) including a new Self-Titled LP, Marshmellow Overcoat, released in January of 2017. Marshmellow Overcoat features Alan Hancock (one of the area’s best guitarists) and Anthony Cavallaro (MMOC’s drummer for nearly a decade) alongside Tyler. Based out of Bradford, Pennsylvania, Tyler & Marshmellow Overcoat perform most often in Western PA and NY State. The Blue Mule Band has been performing an Eclectic mix of traditional Bluegrass and upbeat folk music in the Southern Tier for more than 15 years. Some fans refer to their music as “Mule Grass”. Members of the band are Gail Pearles, lead vocals and rhythm guitar. Bernie Dotterweich, banjo, guitar and vocals. Dug Stein, harmonica and vocals. Don Strom, upright Bass and Steve Strom, mandolin, dobro and vocals.
Jamie Haight July 30-Aug 3 Jamie began playing guitar at the age of 9. He played many gigs and dances in high school, entertaining crowds with songs from Harry Chapin, The Five Man Electric Band, and Nirvana. Later he played with bands such as Djava, Sweet Jane, and China Phrog to name a few. Jamie was a member of the Chautauqua Area Musician Program’s “Fantasy Rock Star League,” and was voted Chautauqua County’s best lead guitarist in 2005. Over the last several years Jamie has done mostly solo work, performing at area venues and recording albums. Jamie loves playing music and teaching the many fun aspects of playing guitar. He will put on a performance the whole family will enjoy!

For plants to truly flourish, the right growing conditions and soil that offers the right nutrients is of paramount importance. Fertilizer enhances soil so that plants and flowers can thrive. However, fertilizer is not a one-size-fits-all mix. Choosing fertilizer can be a little overwhelming thanks to the variety of formulations available at neighborhood lawn and garden centers. Shelves contain all-paurpose products, such as those billed as vegetable fertilizer, and even formulations geared toward specific flower varieties. Others may feature buzz words like “all-natural� or “organic,� and consumers may not be sure just what they need to keep plants healthy. The following guidelines can help any would-be gardener or landscaper grow more vibrant plants. Start with a soil test It’s difficult to determine

what plants need without an accurate picture of what’s going on in the ground. A soil test can paint a picture of what’s going on and indicate if any nutrients are lacking. A common misconception is that gardeners fertilize plants. But fertilizer amends the soil that feeds plants, according to the soil-testing lab professionals at Virginia Tech. Soil types vary by region, and conditions may even vary between spots on a landscape. Testing where the plants will be placed can yield the most accurate results. Soil tests are available at gardening centers and online. Otherwise, landscaping professionals can conduct tests. Know the N-P-K ratio Most fertilizers will come with information concerning the nutrients within. Most notably it will have a breakdown of how much nitrogen (N), phosphorous (P) and potassium (K) is in the mix. Judging by the soil test, gardeners can choose a product that will give them the right ratio to amend the soil for the type of plant they are hoping to grow. Complete fertilizers often have NPK in the formulation. Incomplete fertilizers may have only one or two nutrients. This allows a person to
customize fertilizer even more without overdoing it with a particular nutrient. Grow plant knowledge A cursory knowledge of the plants being planted in the garden also can be helpful. Gardeners must recognize that some plants will not tolerate excess amounts of a particular fertilizer component, while some may need more. Checking books out of the library, seeking information online and consulting with landscaping experts will help expand homeowners’ knowledge about plant types and the needs of each particular plant they hope to grow. Solid and liquid fertilizer Fertilizers are generally sold in pellets, spikes and liquid forms. Pellets or granules are dispersed over large areas and will gradually offer nutrients when the soil is watered. Liquid fertilizer is concentrated and fast-acting. These may be used for container plants or smaller areas. Spikes usually are placed in houseplants or to feed individual trees or shrubs. Depending on the formulation, fertilizer may need to be reapplied once a month or more. Consult the product packaging for the correct application advice.
