Holiday Valley is open and in full swing. Choose from numerous lifts and slopes, warm up in the lodge, then head back out and do it all over again. HV offers other ways to enjoy downhill if you want a break from the skis or snowboard. Both the Sky Flyer Mountain Coaster and the tubing park just opened for the winter season. Guests can enjoy endless winter fun and over $3 million in improvements, including an automated snowmaking system, a Magic Carpet lift in the beginner’s area, new trails, and an all-new Cindy’s Warming Hut and Mistletoe Lean To. All the fun of tubing without any of the work, Holiday Valley Tubing Company has up to 22 lanes, each 900 feet long with a drop of 100 feet. Some lanes are single width, while others are wider group lanes to allow for linking up with friends. Head out of the ticket center, grab a tube and line up. When you get to the front of the line, just sit down in your tube and catch a ride up on one of two handle tows (the dismount from the tow is also pretty cool!) Choose your lane, wait for the attendant to give you the go-ahead, then ready, set, go! Race your friends and other tubers to the bottom and see who gets the farthest on the track. daily during the Christmas break. It’s located on the corner of Route 242 and Bryant Hill Road on the north side of Ellicottville. A free shuttle service to and from Holiday Valley is available every two hours during operating hours, with pickup at the Resort Services Center. Visit the Sky Flyer Mountain Coaster near the Tannenbaum Lodge and get ready for a thrilling ride down through the snowy woods! The Mountain Coaster is similar to a roller coaster but it is low to the ground and follows the contours of the terrain. You ride alone or with a friend in a “car” attached to rails that pulls you up the hill, then it follows a zig zagging spiraling path down the mountain. You can control the speed of your car with levers on the sides of the car. For more info, visit www. holidayvalley.com/winter/ sky-ﬂyer-mountain-coaster. The cross country trails along the top ridgeline of Holiday Valley and around the golf course at the bottom of the mountain are generally packed by

snowmobile and if weather permits, the lower trails are trackset. The trails on top are open until 3 p.m. and are recommended for those with intermediate skills. For $15, you can purchase a 2-ride cross country ticket for the Mardi Gras, Cindy’s or Tannenbaum lift. Ride up, and you can either ride the Mardi Gras or Tannenbaum chair back down, or ski down one of the easier trails (Tannenbaum or Explorer/Day’s End are recommended). The easier trails along the golf course at the base of the mountain are open during daylight hours and feature solar lights for a nighttime ski on the golf course, just be sure to stay away from the ponds that are used for snowmaking. Snowshoeing is also available on the lower slopes and on the golf course, but be sure to stay to the side of the cross country tracks. Adventurous and experienced cross country skiers can make use of the miles and miles of mountain bike trails located in the state forest bordering Holiday Valley. These trails are not patrolled or maintained, so take all precautions of a responsible back country

skier. Both snowshoes and cross country skis are available to rent at Holiday Valley’s High Performance shop. First Day Hike at ASP

Start your new year off right! Join us at Allegany State Park on Jan. 1, 2018 for our annual First Day Hike. Allegany’s First Day Hike offers a healthy and relaxing way for people of all ages to get outside and enjoy the winter beauty of the area. The Environmental Education Department has put together a self-guided hike which will start at the Red House Picnic area. Stop by the picnic shelter to sign in, pick up a trail map and a winter scavenger hunt sheet, then make you way along the marked trail past Red House Lake, out to the Arboretum and Butterﬂy Meadow and ﬁnally to Camp Allegany

where the Friends of Allegany State Park will provide some hot drinks and warm food from 12- 2 p.m. Hikers who want to go the extra mile (literally) can continue to historic Bova Ski Area. This easy to moderate hike is 3 miles to Camp Allegany or 4 miles to Bova, round trip. Interpretive points of interest are marked along the way. Come listen to birds, feel the warmth of

the sun or the chill of the snow. First Day Hike will run from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Pre-registration is not required. Be sure to dress in appropriate winter hiking apparel. New Cottages at ASP Continued from front page

“Ten of the 15 foundations have been completed to date, so those units will be built this winter,” explained Jay Bailey, Regional Director, OPRHP -Allegany Region. “The remaining ﬁve cottage foundations will likely be poured in the spring.” The target completion date of all 15 cottages is May 1. The cottages are being constructed by ASP Partners, LLC under a 20-year license. “The funds to construct the cottages are derived privately by ASP Partners, LLC, and through a grant awarded to them through the Regional Economic Development Council,” noted Bailey. The new builds will have a familiar feel to them. “The cottages will be similar in structure to the Bova and Parallel cottages, but they will have a different appearance due to changes in the siding used. They will also be slightly smaller, and intended only for three-season use,” Bailey said. “These units will be full-service lodging facilities just like Bova and Parallel in that they will have a kitchen with all the necessary appliances with utensils, full bathroom

with towel service. The two twin beds will include linens.” Overall size of the cottages is 24’ X 24’ with an 8’ porch. According to Bailey, once opened, “State Park staff will be operating and maintaining these cottages on a daily basis once they open; however, ASP Partners, LLC will be responsible for capital repairs throughout the term of the license.” Come spring, the cottages can be reserved through www. reservamerica.com. On the other side of the park, patrons will ﬁnd a popular cabin trail has had a makeover. The Ryan Trail, located on the Red House side along ASP 2, consists of 10 cabins, which were all renovated this past summer and fall. “All 10 of the Ryan Trail cabins (originally built by the Civilian Conservation Corps) received renovations of the main ‘building envelope’. Work

included new roofs, copper chimney ﬂashing, painting of the exteriors, repointing of stone masonry, siding repair as needed, along with other structural repairs, as required, to get the cabins all back into good condition and ready for many more years of service,” explained park manager Tom Livak. Livak said that even Cabin No. 9, which had previously been closed for many years, was renovated, along with the emergency hold cabin No. 8. Those familiar with the park are sure to understand the popularity of this cabin trail, as it features spacious cabins and a private setting overlooking Red House Brook. “Ryan cabins are a bit unique from other cabin trails in that they each have a ﬁreplace,” added Livak. “These particular cabins date back to the 1930s and do have a unique look compared to some of our other typical cabin designs

at Allegany. While all the Ryan cabins are similar to each other in design, they are not exactly the same. They are also larger with multiple rooms—two bedrooms, a living room and a kitchen area. Many Ryan cabins also have screened porches.” These three-season cabins are closed in the winter, but will reopen to visitors in May; reservations can be made now on www. reserveamerica.com. (A total of nine cabins will appear for rent on Ryan Trail, and Cabin No. 8, the one with only one bedroom, will likely remain as the emergency hold cabin.) Livak noted that other cabins within the park are slated to be renovated as well. “We are working on developing a rehabilitation project for Reed, Indian, and Circle Trails for completion in 2018,” he said. “This project will also focus on similar aspects of the “building envelope” – piers, siding, porch, structural and ﬂoor repairs, painting, new roofs along with new porches and steps where needed.”

aerial maneuvers while skiing. Think ﬂips, jumps and gymnastic-style moves. On the local level, HoliMont’s FLITE team is led by husband and wife team, Kelly and Corey Hacker, both retired US Ski team athletes who took over the team in 2007, and renamed it FLITE, which stands for Focus Leads Individuals To Excellence. Each season, 30-40 athletes, from WNY, as well as Pennsylvania, Ohio and Canada, tackle the slopes in fun-to-watch events. “Our main focus is teaching freestyle in a safe environment,” said Kelly, adding that their backgrounds are in the mogul (those bumps of snow you see on some slopes) and aerial side, and that they teach freestyle in the “old school” way. “We are ﬁrm believers in discipline and structure,” she noted, adding that FLITE team athletes do very well in competition and that several of their kids have made it to the national level. In the off-season, athletes head to Lake

Placid to practice their ﬂips and tricks off of a ski jump and into a swimming pool at the Olympic site. Pre-season training includes getting out on the snow as early as possible. “Early snow skiing is really important and key to training,” Kelly said. Competition season runs January through March, but Kelly stresses that the FLITE team also offers a large recreational program, and that athletes are not required to compete, or can choose to compete locally. The most successful FLITE team athletes are ones who possess a combination of traits. ‘Top athletes need to have drive, dedication and skill, be open-minded and have a little luck on their side,” Kelly said. “And they have to be mentally and physically prepared.” HoliMont members as young as age seven can join the FLITE team, and the coaches like to keep them on the team as long as they can. Freshman Hamilton Waiting Her Turn with UB Women By Sam Wilson

With three points in two minutes, Marissa Hamilton drew a louder reaction than you’d expect to hear for any opposing player, let alone at the end of a 17-point loss for the St. Bonaventure women’s basketball team. That’s, of course, because Hamilton, a Great Valley native, drew a cheering section of family behind the University at Buffalo bench and Ellicottville high schoolers in the student section. After starting at Ellicottville Central School, Hamilton made her ﬁrst appearance at Bona as a Big Four opponent near her hometown last Friday. The Bulls won, 76-59, with their last 3 points coming from Hamilton, a freshman forward, on a free throw and layup. Hamilton said she likes UB because it’s close to home but “it's also a city in itself. It's so big and I love that city feeling, too.” However, she was glad to hear a warm welcome from her family and former schoolmates. “It was great to see everyone,” she said. “It's been a while. It's been a couple months so it was great to have the support and just the reassurance that I'm doing this for all the right things.” Another Southern Tier

product, St. Bonaventure's leading women's basketball scorer this season (entering Friday at 14 points, eight rebounds per game), junior Randolph native Mckenna Maycock played just seven minutes against Buffalo dealing with an undisclosed leg injury. Graduating two years apart, while two of the area's best high school scorers in recent memory (Maycock holds the Western New York career scoring record, while Hamilton owns Ellicottville's school record) didn’t face each other in high school. “We never played against each other but we scrimmaged each other,” Hamilton said, “I just have a lot of respect for her and it's great to have people from around here that I know playing at the Division I level. It was great to see her today, too.” UB coach Felisha Legette-Jack said she’d like to play all 14 players each game, but it’s on the starters of her veteranladen team to build a lead and give the youngsters playing time. “When I go home tonight and talk to my husband, the things I'm going to think about (are) Mariah (Suchan) didn't play, Courtney (Wilkins) didn't play enough minutes,” Legette-Jack said. “There's ﬁve kids that didn't get

enough minutes. Our start has got to be better. We had a good start, we let it slip away, we've got to stop that. We've got to pour it on so that everybody can have that opportunity. To have Marissa, who's from this area, whose dad (Kenrick) went to St. Bonnie, jump in that game and take that shot and have an opportunity to say that she's still standing and she's still here, I'm just so proud of her growth. She's going to get better, there's going to be a day she comes through this building and it's going to be even better.” Off to an 8-2 start and picked to win the East Division of the MAC, UB has aspirations of returning to the NCAA Tournament after making it in 2016. Hamilton is happy for now to play any role the Bulls need. “We have a senior-led team,” Hamilton said, “there's a lot of older people on my team and it's great to win, so whatever my coach feels that needs to happen, needs to happen. It's just great seeing them excel because it makes me better, too. “Our motto is ‘Sweep the Shed’ and we pride ourselves on that. We all do our part, and my part is to be there for them and be out there when I need to be.”

It’s hard to believe Christmas is here! I hope the holidays have found you well and you’ve been able to enjoy the sights and sounds of the season. Every year, my family and I spend Christmas Eve with my in-laws, aunts and uncles, numerous first cousins and their kids. There is beef on weck, macaroni salad and Aunt Marilynn’s raspberry Jello salad, followed by a piñata, an hour of family photos in front of the tree and if we’re lucky, some caroling that no one takes all that seriously. Even with two almost-teenage girls in the house, (the older of whom really enjoys sleeping in until all hours!), I anticipate an early morning on Dec. 25, when months of shopping and wrapping seems to be undone in mere minutes. From there, we get to work putting the finishing touches on our contributions for dinner, pack up about a million things and head to my parents’ house just down the road, where the holiday cheer continues until well into the night. Whatever your holiday traditions are, I hope they find you spending time with family and friends, enjoying the little things that go along with the season and making wonderful memories! Eagles’ Girls Impress in Tourney Opener

Ellicottville junior guard/ forward Linnea Jimerson erupted Wednesday, scoring 21 of her 34 total points in the second half of the Eagles’ Holiday Valley/Ellicottville Sports Boosters Holiday Tournament opener, charging past Frewsburg in the process. Trailing 29-20 at halftime Thursday, the Eagles won 52-44 with 34 points, 13 rebounds and three steals from Jimerson. “That was her best allaround game for sure,” coach Chad Bartoszek said of Jimerson. “She’s really developing a knack for that shot fake and go, take it to the hoop. I think she’s developing that outside jumper, which is drawing a little more defense. She’s always had a knack for taking it to the rack but if she can start hitting them from outside that’s going to expand the zone and we can do some things.” Jimerson earned the Olean Times Herald’s female Athlete of the Week honor for her efforts against Frewsburg. Senior guard Evelyn Cortez added 9 points and ﬁve steals for Ellicottville (2-2) while playing all 32 minutes. “It's a lot of pressure on her to bring the ball up,” Bartoszek said. “She made some bad decisions, but she made a lot more good decisions. All we've got to do is erase some of those turnovers and she's going to be a heck of a point guard for us. Couple that with Linnea's ability to score and hopefully we have

something here and we can build on this.” Bartoszek said the second half came down to “focus and composure.” “We’re a young team,” Bartoszek said. “We looked erratic all first half and we finally settled in the second half and you could just tell. We were playing basketball… we were running offense, we were playing defense, we were in our correct spots, we were running transition offense when we had it and we were pulling out when we didn’t. It was really nice to see them put together some things and they should be proud. That was a good team, we battled them pretty tough and it was good to come out on top. “That was our best half (of the season). Linnea gets in foul trouble, that could throw a wrench into things, but we hung tough, kept it tied and when she got in there fresh we just kind of took off.” Frewsburg (0-3) got 23 points from Dani Gray before the junior center fouled out in the fourth quarter, while Gabby Iuculano added 11 points. Randolph won the other tournament semifinal Friday, defeating Gowanda 75-44, but Saturday’s weather forced the postponement of planned championship and consolation games, which will be made up outside of the tournament weekend. The Eagles lost their next game, 46-38, in a rematch against Hindsale Monday (see recap, B2). With the graduation of

Snowmobile Season Now Underway

With snow starting to pile up around much of Cattaraugus County since early December, snowmobile owners found themselves itching to get out on the snowmobile trails. The problem for snowmobilers is that trails are closed until the end of late muzzleloader big game season Dec. 19. Cathy Hill, vice president of the Cattaraugus County Snowmobile Federation and trail coordinator, said as the big game season has been extended, snowmobile clubs had to wait until Dec. 20 this year to open their trails. As of Dec. 13, she said, about 90 percent of the thousands of trail signs across 400 miles of trails had been installed by snowmobile club volunteers. “We won’t open the trails until they are all signed,” Hill added. The ﬁrst signs to go up are the stop and stop ahead signs. Allegany State Park has another 74 miles of groomed snowmobile trails maintained by park employees. Hill, a longtime member of the Snow-Bounders Inc. snowmobile club, with 85 miles of trails in the Little Valley area, keeps track of much of the paperwork clubs need to submit for state grants. Each club receives a portion of snowmobile registration fees of its members. Clubs are always looking for grants for expensive grooming equipment. In 2017, the nine snowmobile clubs with trails in Cattaraugus County shared $127,445 from the state Snowmobile Trail Grant Program. That’s down from a high of more than $210,000 only a few years ago. The 2017 grant was divided as follows: • Ashford Snowmobile Club, West Valley, $9,540. • Elibomwons Inc., Randolph, $23,955. • Enchanted Mountains

Border Riders, Westons Mills, $4,275. • Franklinville Snow Sled Club, Franklinville, $18,355. • Portville Snowmobile Club, $10,260. • Snow-Bounders Inc., Cattaraugus, $38,575. • Southern Tier Snow Drifters, North Collins, $7,945. • Tri-County Drift Hoppers, Sandusky, $10,830. • Western New York Snowmobile Club, Boston, $3,710. Hill advises snowmobile riders from out of the area to join a club in the area where they plan to snowmobile. That way they can register their sled for less than half of what they could at any Department of Motor Vehicles Ofﬁce and know that the fees will come back to the club for maintenance costs. Snowmobilers who do not register through a club pay a $100 fee that does not come back to the local club. The Snow-Bounders have about 200 members and four groomers. Their latest purchase was a used groomer costing about half as much as a new $250,000 grooming machine. Hill also keeps members of the Cattaraugus County Snowmobile Federation up to date on any new state policy that affect the group, and safety and grooming issues. The Snow-Bounders’ trails extend over the property of more than 300 landowners. Without them, Hill notes, the trails would not exist. At Easter time, club members deliver hams or turkeys to the participating landowners as an annual thank you. The club send out an annual request to renew trail agreements. “You really have to get out and start putting signs up before October,” Hill said in an interview. Trail areas that cross unharvested ﬁelds cannot be signed until after the

harvest — and before hunting season. Volunteers are the backbone of every snowmobile club, Hill said. The problem is that often there aren’t enough of them. “If you ride, you should participate if you can,” she added. Volunteers found them themselves hauling gravel and rebuilding some bridges that were washed out by heavy fall rains, she said. There are always fallen trees that need to removed from the trail before opening day too. It’s important to stay on the signed trail systems, not only for safety purposes, but because snowmobiles can damage a landowner’s property. “People always call and ask if the trails will be open on opening day,” Hill said. The trouble with not being able to get out onto the snowmobile trails until Dec. 20 is that any snow can’t be packed down and groomed, Hill said. “The ground is soft underneath the snow,” she said. “We need to go through with a groomer with no drag just to start packing down the snow.” New snow can later be groomed. The problem in the past few years is that there has been plenty of snow before the trails opened, Hill said. Then, after the trails could open, things warmed up and the snow melted. It was sometimes weeks before there was enough snow to open the trails again — if only for a few days. Most of the snowmobile clubs have websites which note whether the trails are open and the conditions. The Cattaraugus County Economic Development, Planning and Tourism’s website at www. enchantedmountains.com has links to the clubs’ websites. “We’re hoping for a good year,” Hill said.

Adhering to a Fitness Plan

I have had the good fortune of training many elite skiers as a personal trainer in Ellicottville, NY. As a personal trainer, I believe the best way to get in shape for ski season is to already be in shape. However, I myself fluctuate with my training routine and find that I am in better fitness form at different times of the year. What is difficult for even the most seasoned of athletes is adherence or sustaining a perfect training plan yearround. Sometimes what knocks you off your fitness ladder

is an illness or injury; other times, it’s boredom with your workouts or just being plain old too busy to maintain the ﬁtness level you desire. Recently, I read an amazing article by David Lawrence, who is on the PSIA Nordic Team, on How to Build an Automatic Training Program. After a recent health setback, Lawrence is honing the perfect training program that balances life, business, time and health. He believes in creating automatic environmental training triggers (AETT), which make adherence to a training program much easier. You follow

this principle when you schedule a run with a friend or go to a workout classby creating social pressure and accountability, you create AETT. Lawrence goes on to describe how he also sets a timer on his phone to cue him to take a break and do a quick exercise cycle: push-ups, planks, squats, jump-rope, pullups and dips. There is virtually no gear needed (except a jump rope) and it takes approximately eight minutes. Other tactics that Lawrence uses are getting rid of his office chair and creating a standing work station. Also, if you hate training in a gym, but love the outdoors, create a trail running course with obstacles that are challenging and fun. That way your activity does not take a lot of willpower. Most people I talk with about maintaining a training program seem to fall into similar ruts when trying to balance work, families and fitness. By creating these mini workouts, you will keep your body moving and in shape. This way you are not starting from scratch when you really want to dial in your fitness level.

Located just four miles from the resort on Route 242 in Ellicottville, the tubing park offers hours of downhill thrills. All the fun of tubing without any of the work, Holiday Valley Tubing Company (which, according to Snow Tubing Source, is the fifth largest of its kind in the country!) has up to 22 lanes, each 900 feet long with a drop of 100 feet. Some lanes are single width, while others are wider group lanes to allow for linking up with friends. Head out of the ticket center, grab a tube and line up. When you get to the front of the line, just sit down in your tube and catch a ride up on one of two handle tows (the dismount from the tow is also pretty cool!) Choose your lane, wait for the attendant to give you the go-ahead, then ready, set, go! Race your friends and other tubers to the bottom and see who gets the farthest on the track. Screaming optional, but highly recommended. Once you stop, get out, drag your tube to the tow and do it all over again! A special Little Tubers area is also available, weather permitting, for younger children. A cozy warming hut is at the base of the hill with a snack bar, fireplace and restrooms. The Allegany Region Commission agreed last week to put in a bid to host the 2019 annual meeting of the New York State Council of Parks at Allegany State Park. The last time Allegany State Park hosted an annual meeting of the New York State Council of Parks was in 2001, said Commission Chairman Dalton J. Burgett during the group’s meeting on Dec. 12. “The last time they were here, they really liked it,” he added. One reason the Council of Parks hasn’t returned, Burgett said, is because “nobody wants to travel.” Most meetings are in the Albany, Hudson Valley and New York City areas. The most recent meeting, however, was in Niagara Falls. “It’s the biggest state park east of the Mississippi,” Burgett said. “They don’t know how big a park this is. Once they get exposed to it, I think they better understand our needs.” Bernadette Castro was commissioner of the New York State Ofﬁce of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation when the last meeting was held in Allegany, Burgett said. Then, commissioners from around the state stayed at Chautauqua Institution. Commissioner Michael McLaughlin said the state visitors could stay in Ellicottville, which is closer to Allegany State Park. Commissioner

coordinator, outlined work accomplished on the parks 236 miles of multi-use trails since he started in the position a year ago. He said he has recruited a number of trail stewards to aid in maintenance and upkeep of he trails. Last year they provided the equivalent of $65,000 worth of volunteer labor. For example, between 250 and 400 trees fall across park trails every year. This year they have cleared 293 trees from the trails. Dove has a paid staff of three working for 14 weeks during the summer on trail maintenance. Other groups also volunteer for trail maintenance duties, and several special events to bring in other volunteers. Dove displayed new trail signs that can be seen on the trails. The park used to have trouble with raccoons eating metal signs. They settled on a thin plastic. The raccoons pass them by. Not so some trail users, however. “We have to resign some trails two or three times a year,” Dove said. “People take them for souvenirs.”

Lisa Feinberg-Duckett wondered if commissioners could stay at cabins in the state park or at the Seneca Allegany Resort and Casino. Feineberg-Duckett said there would probably be a lot of volunteers needed for the event. “I think you’d get a lot of volunteers,” she added. “People remember all the activities we had,” Burgett said. “We made it work once and it was as smooth as silk.” Regional Director Jay Bailey told commissioners that the $6 million Red House Lake dam/bridge project is scheduled to go on winter shutdown in a few weeks. A few storms this fall raised the level of the lake, which had been lowered 8 feet to do rehabilitation work, Bailey said. That delayed the project brieﬂy. It is now going as scheduled. In addition, bridge beams to support the surface of the new road have arrived in the state park, Bailey said. Patrick Dove, the park’s new trails

Nearly $3.8 million in grants for nine projects across Cattaraugus County were announced last week by Gov. Andrew Cuomo. The Western New York Economic Development Council Awards include two projects in Ellicottville. They are: • $500,000 for Fitzpatrick & Weller to expand and renovate its hardwood and ﬁnished products company in Ellicottville. It will also replace kilns with state-ofthe-art equipment to remain competitive, retain jobs and increase productivity; and • $400,000 for a joint shared engineering services project by the town and village of Ellicottville. It will establish a single engineering department with a full-time engineer working for both municipalities. The new ofﬁce will oversee the DPW departments and consolidates three part-time positions into one. It will also reduce the need to hire outside engineers. The largest award in the county was $1.5 million to Historic Cattaraugus for extensive restoration of the Historic Crawford House Hotel on Main Street in the village. That project is designed to help “turn the Cattaraugus Village Commercial Historic

District into a prosperous commercial district while retaining its historic character and architectural integrity,” according to the Western New York Economic Development Council’s announcement. The city of Olean received $500,000 for the Olean Urban Renewal Agency for a Manufacturer’s Hanover Trust Co. Building stabilization fund; $200,000 for a City of Olean Microenterprise Program; and $59,000 for Forness Park Trail. The other projects receiving awards include: • $330,759 for a Cattaraugus County Soil and Water Conservation District project for longterm ditch stabilization. • $160,812 for T&D Resorts Inc., owners of Triple R Camping Resort in Franklinville, for a full scale water park where visitors will be able to operate an interactive play center with features such as water cannons and water curtains. This regional tourism project is expected to increase visitation to the area. • $100,000 for an engineering report to evaluate the village of Franklinville’s wastewater collection and treatment system.

The November meeting of the East Otto Town Board was called to order at 6:04 PM by Deputy Supervisor Dave Forster on Tuesday Nov. 14, 2017. A motion was made by Mike Poch and seconded by Sid Barber to conﬁrm and accept the results of the individual poll of each member on Oct. 10, 2017 by Supervisor Ann Rugg to authorize Highway Superintendent Tom Benz to agree to trade in the loader for a new one for another year, for $8,223. All members voted yes. Forster, Spors, Barber, and Poch were in favor. Motion carried. Highway: Tom told the board that there were many roads hit hard from the big storm. All of the roads that were affected have been repaired with the exception of Snake Run road. He has contacted a contractor to assist in the work left to be done. A new pressure washer was purchased, was hooked up and is working good. The loader has been switched out. Tom presented the board with a quote on materials for the addition on the back of the shop. Most importantly, all six started their journey at HoliMont and are currently racing for their respective national teams at the highest level such as World Cups and national events. Tricia Mangan skis for the U.S. Alpine Ski Team and Robbie Andison is on Canada’s National Freestyle Team (moguls). Kaylie Buck, Megan Farrell, Darren Gardner and Jennifer Hawkrigg are all Canadian National Team snowboard racers. Five of the six athletes are expected to attend the event to sign commemorative posters (provided) and answer questions. There will be entertainment, door prizes, wine, beer and whiskey tasting from sponsors, as well as snacks and drinks from Dina’s. Admission is $50 per person or $100 per family, which includes kids under 21 years old. There will be silent auction and live auction items to bid on. The “Olympic Hopefuls” fundraiser at HoliMont is open to anyone who wants to attend, not for members only. All of the funds, net of expenses, will be divided among the athletes and used for training and

travel expenses. Ed Farrell, father of snowboarding champion Megan Farrell, said the focus of the event is to bring the members and the public closer to these athletes to share their success and wish them well. He said this is the second year the fundraising event has been held to show support for HoliMont’s national team athletes who have set their sights on the 2018 Olympics. According to Farrell, the athletes’ current schedules are varied but are primarily centered in Europe, with an occasional North American or Asian event. In some cases, the athletes will be competing to try to qualify right up to the end of January. The Olympics are scheduled to begin in February in South Korea.

DARREN GARDNER, 27, of British Columbia, is a three-time Canadian

National Champion. Ranked No. 1 nationally, he is in the Top 30 in the world. Gardner competed in his ﬁrst United States of America Snowboard and Freeski Association (USASA) Snowboard Nationals in Waterville Valley, N.H. After graduating high school, Gardner was invited to train with the National Development team in Calgary. In 2009, he joined the Development Team and, in 2010, he was named to the National Team and participated in his ﬁrst World Cup Race. By 2012, he was competing full-time on the World Cup circuit.

JENNIFER HAWKRIGG, 21, of Toronto, Ontario, is a member of the Canadian National Development Team competing in World Cup competitions and NORAM races. She was a member of the

HoliMont Snowboard Race Team, the Ontario Race Team and the Canadian Junior Team. By the end of high school, she had competed in every Junior World Championship. Last year, she competed in the World University Games in Kazakhstan and placed fourth in the parallel slalom event. “I continue to set high expectations for my professional snowboarding career, and this year, I’m eager to qualify and represent Canada at the Olympics,” she said.

KAYLIE BUCK, 17, of Oakville, Ontario, is an alpine snowboard racer on the Canadian National Team. She has competed on the Snowboard Ontario and USASA circuits, as well as the USASA nationals. Last season, Buck attended the Junior World Championships in the Czech Republic ﬁnishing 6th, the best result for Canada. She achieved 3rd place overall on the NorAm tour, earning herself a personal World Cup spot for the 2017-18 season, as well as a spot on the Canadian National Team. “I will be competing on the World Cup circuit, Europa Cup circuit and the NorAm circuit to achieve the results I need to qualify for the upcoming 2018 Olympic Winter Games,”

she said.

MEGAN FARRELL, 25, is a Canadian National Snowboard Champion from Richmond Hill, Ontario. In both 2015 and 2016, she became the North American Champion. Her goal for this season is to qualify and compete at the Olympics. “Since 2015, I have been on the national team racing in World Cups full-time,” she said. “Last year at the Olympic test event in Korea, I finished in 30th position, which qualified me for World Championships in Spain. It was an honor to represent Canada in the prestigious event, and I finished in 26th position. My best result thus far.”

ROBBIE ANDISON, 20, comes from Oakville, Ontario, and skis with the Canada Moguls Team. His career highlights are 2015 Canada Cup winner, Silver medallist at the 2015 Canadian Senior Mogul Championships (dual moguls) and Gold medallist at the 2015 Canada Games (dual moguls). In early

PATRICIA “TRICIA” MANGAN, 24, of Derby, N.Y., is a member of the U.S. Ski Team. The former National Training Group athlete took a spot on the podium of juniors in giant slalom during the 2015 season at the U.S. Alpine Championships in Sugarloaf, Maine. In 2016, Mangan topped the Super G podium among juniors at the U.S. Alpine Championships, in Sun Valley, Idaho. She won the NorAM Super G and Alpine Combined Overall award, in March. With four World Cup starts, she was in the Top 30 in St. Moritz’ Super “G” in Switzerland, Dec. 9. Stir together ¾ cup granulated sugar, 1 tablespoon of light brown sugar, 2 teaspoons of chopped fresh rosemary, 1 teaspoon of salt, 1 teaspoon of cinnamon, ½ teaspoon of ginger, ¼ teaspoon of nutmeg and ¼ teaspoon of ground red pepper in a medium bowl. Next, whisk together 1 large egg white and 1 tablespoon of water in a separate medium bowl until foamy. Add 4 cups of pecan halves, stirring to coat all of them. Add the pecan mixture to the sugar mixture, and mix well. Then, spread the pecans in a single layer on a lightly greased aluminum foil-lined baking sheet. Bake for 50 to 55 minutes or until sugar mixture hardens and the nuts are toasted, stirring every 15 minutes. Spread the pecans immediately in a single layer on waxed paper; allow to cool completely (about 30 minutes).
