It’s a brand new year, full of possibilities and opportunities! If diving right into something new is your kind of resolution for 2016, why not learn a snowsport? Whether you’ve always wanted to try it, but never found the time, or you’ve always skied, but now want to try snowboarding, now’s your chance. January is National Learn a Snowsport month, and EVL’s famous resorts are the perfect spots to learn a new sport and learn to love the snow. Holiday Valley kicked off the month by participating in an attempt to break the Guinness world record for largest beginner lesson on Friday, Jan. 8. Holiday Valley joined in with resorts across the country to introduce the great sports of skiing and snowboarding to as many people as possible by inviting anyone ages 6 and over to be a part of the record book by taking a free Learn to Ski or Learn to Snowboard Lesson at Holiday Valley. Stay tuned to next week’s Ellicottville Times for the results! If you didn’t make it down for that special event, no worries. Holiday Valley is celebrating with great deals on Learn to Ski or Ride packages all month long. According to Jane Eshbaugh, Holiday Valley’s marketing director, “This year we’re offering half priced learn-toski or learn-to-ride packages for ages 12 and up during the month of January.” The

Winter has arrived, better late than never! And, like all winter months in EVL, there’s a ton of fun to be had! Music, beer, bikes and more are all yours for the taking Jan. 22-24. Cold beer and hot music can only mean one thing: a weekend of extreme fun is in your future with the Winter Blues and Brews Festival, sponsored by the Ellicottville Chamber of Commerce. Formerly called Winter Blues weekend, adding “Brews” to the name translates into great tasting opportunities from the Buffalo Niagara Brewers Association. Combine that with the hottest blues bands around— Heavenly Chillbillies, Tommy Z and Millers and the Other Sinners, to name a few—and you’ve got yourself the perfect excuse to get out those dancin’ shoes. January is National Safety Month Know the Code on the Slopes According to the National Ski Areas Association (NSAA), common sense is “one of the most important things to keep in mind and practice when on the slopes.� The organization developed the seven-point Responsibility Code to help skiers and boarders remember that “there are elements of risk in snowsports that common sense and personal awareness can help reduce.� Keep this code in mind every single time you head to Holiday Valley or HoliMont this season. Seven Points to Your Responsibility Code 1. Always stay in control, and be able to stop or avoid other people or objects. 2. People ahead of you have the right of way. It is your responsibility to avoid them. 3. You must not stop where you obstruct a trail, or are not visible from above. 4. Whenever starting downhill or merging into a trail, look uphill and yield to others. 5. Always use devices to help prevent runaway equipment. 6. Observe all posted signs and warnings. Keep off closed trails and out of closed areas. 7. Prior to using any lift, you must have the knowledge and ability to load, ride and unload safely. KNOW THE CODE: IT’S YOUR RESPONSIBILITY.

New Weight Loss Program Offered at Core Performance

At Core Performance Fitness and Training, we strive to meet all of our clients needs. And, typically, after the holidays have come and gone, our clients are looking for ways to lose the unwanted pounds they have been putting off losing. Exercise, as we all know, is a great way to burn calories and rev up our metabolism. But, in order to lose weight and keep it off, you need to pay closer attention to what you consume.
Luckily, my dear friend, Kristen Sciara came to me with an exciting program that helped not only her, but, countless others. It is not a gimmicky program and requires absolutely no Facebook time or selfies. Instead, it is a program that outlines a balanced meal plan that helps you develop new eating habits that promote weight loss and can easily be sustained for a lifetime. The program is called In.Form and it is a 13-week group program designed to improve wellness and metabolism through a stepby-step weight management program. For Sciara, who has tried countless weight loss programs and strategies, “the In.Form program just clicked for me. It blew my mind. I just had to follow it and add in fitness and boom…weight loss.” She also said that about halfway through the program she started thinking about

becoming a coach and was compelled to get certified. “I want to lead our group to reach group goals, have fun and likely learn some more things along the way.” Sciara wanted to hold the In.Form meetings at Core Performance so that all who participate can see the importance of the exercise piece of the program and also to let participants know there are no hidden surprises or sales pitches for unrelated products. In addition, she plans to share recipes and fitness tips at each meeting. The In.Form group is scheduled to start meeting on January 11 at 6:30 p.m. and will focus on different topics over each of the 13 weeks – from ensuring necessary water consumption and managing cravings to dealing with stress. town representatives and adopt standard policies and procedures. Although it wasn’t first on the agenda, the appointment of Mark Alianello as Town Highway Superintendent was the most significant new action taken by the board. McAndrew was authorized by the board to sign the contract with Alianello for the two-year term at $28,472/year for a minimum of 250 hours per year. (See related story, cover). Alianello also was reappointed as Town Engineer, which specifies he work a minimum of 550 hours per year. His annual contract is for $51,528. Per Alianello’s recommendation, the board appointed Frank Moore as Deputy Highway Superintendent. The following additional actions were taken by the board: Salaries for elected officials, including the Supervisor,
were approved. McAndrew announced that he will forgo the health insurance benefit from the town since he is covered through his fulltime job with the County’s Department of Public Works. Board member Ken Hinman was appointed deputy town supervisor; Kathleen Moriarty was reappointed as town attorney; Harry Weissman was reappointed as the town’s assessor and Don Auge was reappointed Police Officer in Charge. Robyn George was reappointed as town clerk and Tracy Stokes was reappointed as deputy town clerk and bookkeeper to the supervisor. George also was reappointed as town tax collector and registrar of vital statistics and Stokes will retain her role as summer recreational director and deputy registrar of vital statistics. Both George and Stokes were named official signatories on the clerk’s bank account and the real property
tax collection bank account. The board approved the town’s standard investment policy. In discussion of the town’s procurement policy, Alianello informed the board that there are some significant changes to some state procurement policies that are not reflected in the town’s current policy. He suggested the board update the policy with Moriarty’s input. George noted that any changes to the policy must also be made in the town’s handbook. Cathleen Pritchard was reappointed to the Board of Assessment Review, Jack Kramer was reappointed to the Zoning Board of Appeals (which still has one vacancy) and Sheri Barrera and Doc Dayton were reappointed to the Town Planning Board. The first regular board meeting of the new year is scheduled for Wednesday, Jan. 20 at 6 p.m. in the Town/ Village Hall.

Freedom from Smoking Starts January 19 Bertrand Chaffee Hospital will host the American Lung Association’s (ALA) “Freedom from Smoking” program during 2016. ALA-certified instructors will present this eight-session program on Tuesday evenings from 6-7:30 p.m., starting on Jan. 19 and continuing through March 1. This program is designed for adult smokers and features step-by-step plans to help smokers gain control over their behavior. Cigarette smoke contains cancercausing chemicals and can
lead to lung cancer, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), chronic bronchitis and emphysema. Smoking is a behavior that negatively affects nearly every organ in the human body. It is also a cause of heart disease and stroke. The program costs $80 and includes a workbook and CD. Registration is now open. To register call (716) 592-9643. Bertrand Chaffee Hospital’s ongoing community health outreach includes smoking cessation programs and diabetic education. Future sessions are scheduled for
May 3-June 14 and October 4-November 15 in 2016. Monthly Diabetic Support Group Continues Bertrand Chaffee Hospital coordinates monthly diabetic support group meetings for Type I and Type II diabetics and their loved ones as part of its community education initiatives. Interested individuals are invited to participate in this group to share recipes, coupons and information about topics related to diabetes and health in a supportive and welcoming environment. The group will meet at Bertrand Chaffee Hospital on the first Monday of each month from 6-7 p.m. A Certified Diabetic Educator will facilitate the group, and meetings are free of charge. Snowflakes Arrive in Ellicottville! Snowflakes are finally making their way to Ellicottville! Gallery 14731 is proud to announce the opening of our second show, Douglas Levere: Snowflakes on Jan. 7, 2016. The show will feature 21 stunning photographs of individual snowflakes. Snowflakes have become a passion of Levere’s, an artist and commercial photographer living in Amherst, NY. On most cold, snowy winter nights, he can be found out in his garage photographing snowflakes. Using a digital SLR, a microscope lens, an adapted microscope base and a flash, he is able to capture the delicacy, strength and elegance of snowflakes in the short time that they exist. Levere finds it to be “a joyous task to reveal these gems that are hiding in plain sight.” This show will be only the second public exhibition of Levere’s snowflake
photography. This work has been published in the New Yorker, The Buffalo News and in many other online publications and blogs. His commercial images have also appeared in Newsweek, People, Business Week, Life, the New York Times and Forbes. The uniqueness of each snowflake is truly stunning and
adds to the breathtaking beauty of each photograph. This show is a must see for everyone! The opening reception will be from 5-7 p.m. on Saturday. Jan. 9. The event takes place at Holiday Valley’s Main Lodge on Jan. 23, starting at 10 a.m. Visitors will once again be able to test the HarleyDavidson Jumpstart on the deck at the lodge by going through the gears and making a lot of noise. It’s a great opportunity to sit on a real bike that’s running, but stationery, and learn how to shift through the gears. GHD’s marketing manager Delaney Peters said, “The Jumpstart always proves to be exciting,” noting it’s also great for photo opps. Giveaways? Warner, 66, of Waveland, MS and Ellicottville, NY, passed away Tuesday, Dec. 29, 2015 at Hancock Medical Center in Bay St. Louis, MS. She was born March 12, 1949 in Springville, NY. Mrs. Warner was daughter of the late Richard and Genevieve Schumacher O’Brien. She was married to John E. Warner, who survives. She was lovingly known for her beautiful singing voice, smiling blue eyes, strong will
with devotion to family, and delicious baked goods. Besides her husband, she is survived by her two sons, Damian (Heidi) Warner and Justin (Tracey) Warner, granddaughters Brenna, Briannah, Heaven, Avayah, Harmoni, and Rainah, grandsons Matthew, Kyrin, and Zander, her four brothers, Thomas (Becky) O’Brien of Springville, NY and Robert (Margaret) O’Brien, Michael O’Brien and Timothy (Cheryl)
O’Brien, all of Ellicottville; sister, Kate (Jim) Hughey of Ellicottville, and several nieces and nephews. She was proceeded in death by her parents Richard and Genevieve Schumacher O’Brien, daughter Jennifer E. Warner and Ssister Sharon (O’Brien) Swift. A memorial service will be held at a later date. Howard R. Dunkelman 1925-2016 Howard R. Dunkleman, 90, passed away Friday (Jan. 1, 2016) at Gowanda Rehabilitation and Nursing Center. He was born April 25, 1925, in Jamestown, a son of the late Claude and Lela (Schmoelbeck) Dunkleman. Mr. Dunkleman married the former Beverly “Annie” Schuster, who survives. He owned and operated his family
dairy farm in Ellicottville for many years. Besides his wife, he is survived by a son, Steven Claude Dunkleman of Great Valley; a daughter, Valerie (Dean) Winship of Palm Bay, Fla.; a grandson, Justin Muhisin; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by six brothers, Larry, William, Edward, Leslie, Kenneth and
Donald Dunkleman; and two sisters, Dorothy Pearl and Carol Ann Wing. A memorial service will be held at a later date. Memorials may be made to the charity of the donor’s choice . Arrangements are under the direction of Mentley Funeral Home Inc., 411 Rock City St., Little Valley.

Balanced: You Are... Then You Aren’t
By Ron Kubicki PSIA/AASI Certified Level III Alpine, Children’s Specialist II
Place yourself on two slippery pieces of equipment, stand on a cold slippery surface, push off down a rather steep piece of terrain, pick up speed. Now, stay in balance! Right, good luck with that! But that’s what we do isn’t it? And we do it with varying degrees of success based on a number of factors. Some of these factors are speed, snow conditions, steepness of terrain, visibility, etc. Watch skilled skiers manage terrain and they always appear poised and accurately controlling the direction and angle of their skis. They seem to have the knack for always being balanced. But even high-end skiers are always adjusting many things to stay or get back into balance. They have the ability to ski in and out of balance, and how to re-center and rebalance themselves. They are receiving feedback from a myriad of stimuli. In short, they are bodyaware. Your skiing will improve once you become body-aware. Skiing is all about the movement of your body in space. You need to remain
aware of feedback using your eyes, ears, hands and feet. Yep, your feet. I know they are encased in stiff and heavy boots, but you should always be conscious of feedback from your feet. Are you feeling the bottoms of your feet? Is the most weight/pressure on the ball of your foot? Do you feel your shins against the tongue or are you aware of leaning against the back of your boot for balance? Can you tip your foot onto its big toe side and tip the other on the little toe side? Go to a very open, at and uncongested area and in a slow speed straight run, experiment with your stance and feedback from your feet. A proper stance is balanced and athletic, meaning your ankles are exed and your knees slightly bent with your core supported skeletally, not muscularly. In this stance, with your head and eyes up (do not look at your feet!), experiment with “feelingâ€? your feet. You should feel more pressure on the ball of your foot. Straighten your knees and ankles slowly and feel the weight move more toward your heel, until you are standing straight legged with no ankle or knee exion. If you let your skis run in this straightlegged position for awhile, you will soon realize that without exion adjustments in knees and ankle you are soon out of balance and have little control over your skis. Now, for a real treat, lean back and try to manage a slow speed turn. Slowly allow your knees and ankles to ex until you hit your comfort zone in your balance.
Tip both skis in the same direction at the same time. Notice the pressure build on your big toe on one foot and little toe on the other, and take note of how the pressure builds as the turn develops. Now slowly tip both skis the other way. Think of your feet, take the feedback you are getting and get accustomed to adding this to your “tool bag of skills.â€? Then atten your skis and slowly try to pivot your skis one way then the other. Where do you need to be standing on your foot to attempt this? Pick up one foot. Is the ski parallel to the snow or is a tip or tail dragging? Adjust the pressure you feel in the foot that’s on the ground; if your tail is dragging, you will probably feel more pressure on your heel and the back of your boot. Adjust your stance by the feedback you are getting and slowly ex your ankle more and notice that your ski will now rise off the tail to parallel. If you keep moving forward, the pressure is on your toes and soon the tip will be on the ground. Change feet and repeat. Practice these simple exercises often, using your heightened ability to sense your feet to keep you more poised and balanced in your skiing. For even more speciďŹ c feedback, consider taking a group or private lesson from any of the local highly skilled PSIA-E/AASI trained instructors at our local resorts. This January and February, when the natural world around us is in its winter hibernation, an artist who inspires us to look at nature in a different way, will have her new work on exhibit at the Olean Public Library Art Gallery. The exhibit, Ground Cover, New Work by Lindsey Glover, opens Jan. 7 from 6 - 8 p.m. with a free reception sponsored by the Friends of the Library that is open to the
public. The exhibit closes Feb. 25, 2016. Glover writes a blog, Love of Trees, about all things that grow. She finds her inspiration in everything from the micro of leaves and lichen, to the macro, whole fields and forests. She describes nature’s influence on her this way, “The lives of plants quietly unfold around us, persistent and often unnoticed. The movement is subtle and
accumulates with time: moss spreads across our roofs, leaves pile up in our yards. When we stop to observe these singular forms, their inherent evolutionary intelligence comes forward. In re-imagining their predicted behaviors and forming new landscapes from plant fragments, I aim to create alternative environments that are at once familiar and otherworldly.” The exhibit includes her Satellite series, as well as her new work, Pine Barren. This show is one of a series of library exhibits administered by the Olean Public Library and the Cattaraugus County Arts Council. This series is funded in part by the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Andrew Cuomo and the New York State Legislature. The Olean Public Library Art Gallery is located at 134 North 2nd Street in Olean, and the hours are Mondays through Thursdays 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.; Fridays 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.; Saturdays 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Sundays 1 to 4 p.m.

Jim will be offering his vast knowledge of all aspects of dog training.” Yanetsko reports that Country Squirrel Outfitters (CSO) from Ridgway, PA,
will be the show’s official outfitter – they will bring kayaks, bicycles and hiking supplies, snowshoes and cross country skis, as well as hunting accessories. Leisure Time Powersports of Limestone, NY, will be the show’s official snowmobile vendor – displaying their product lines of snowmobiles and ATVs and accessories. In addition, CUTCO Cutlery and Ka-Bar Knives will return as a show sponsor and vendor showcasing their wide variety of household and hunting knifes. Red Barn Gun Shop will display guns and rifles and accessories; Allegany and Cattaraugus County Pistol Clerks will be on the floor both days. Red Barn is also sponsoring the show’s raffle for the second year. Snowmobiling in the Enchanted Mountains Miles and miles of snowmobile trails await you and your friends this winter in Cattaraugus County. The 12.2 mile Pat McGee trail is a major segment of the trails system, running from the town of Cattaraugus to the
northern part of the town of Salamanca. Allegany State Park has a network of some 90 miles of trails throughout the park. A new trail leads directly to the Seneca Allegany Casino.

job,” said McAndrew. “He understands the big picture better than just about anyone.” The official job description for the Superintendent position is now described as a parttime, contract job with highlevel oversight responsibilities for the highway department. Alianello will not be driving highway vehicles, operating equipment or repairing roads. “I expect to begin by inventorying all of the roads, signs, culverts, etc. and determining their conditions, then prioritize the order of repairs and replacements, develop a five-year plan and budget accordingly,” he explained. “It will help the board and the taxpayers if the department has everything organized and put into a clear, updateable format with a well-
reasoned plan.” Alianello’s two-year contract requires him to work no fewer than 250 hours per year in his role as highway superintendent, which pays $28,472. He also will work with the department as Town Engineer to help determine the best, most cost-effective ways to make infrastructure repairs. “There definitely will be overlap with the engineer role,” he said. “The town engineer must be and always has been involved in decisions about highway department projects.” The board feels that the new approach and contract model for highway superintendent works because the job description of “working supervisor” in the department calls for that person to manage all day-to-day department
decisions and tasks. The board is in the process of searching for the right person to hire as working supervisor. Department employee Frank Moore was appointed Deputy Superintendent by the board per Alianello’s recommendation. McAndrew said he supports the direction the board is taking with the highway department. “This is a new approach for the town,” he said, referring to the town’s decision to make the highway superintendent an appointed, rather than elected, position. “Mark has worked for the town for some 30 years and knows its inner workings. There is no one better suited to setting things up and putting long-term plans in place than Mark,” he said.
