Cabin fever? Winter blues? Time to face ‘em head-on! This weekend’s Winter Blues and Brews Festival is a surefire way to stop the doldrums of winter in their tracks. Happening Jan. 22-24 in the Village, this funfilled weekend in EVL is one not to be missed! What makes this year even better than in the past? The addition of brews, of course! The Ellicottville Chamber has partnered with the Buffalo Niagara Brewers Association to offer guests a chance to sample craft beer from across the region. Head to Ellicottville Brewing Company, where you’ll find a variety of samples from local breweries. $10 gets you four six-ounce samples of some awesome local selections from places such as Resurgence, Flying Bison, Southern Tier Brewing and more. The beer tasting portion of the weekend happens from 4 to 8 p.m. both Friday and Saturday. When you’re ready to get down and liven things up, get ready for music, music and more music! The village hot spots, from Gin Mill and Balloons, to Madigan’s, Villaggio and EBC, will feature blues bands from around the region, starting early and going well into the night. Now’s your chance to get your dance on while you shake those blues off. If this time of year has got your down, use this as your excuse to get out and have a great time. The AMSOIL Championship snocross series is once again making a stop in Salamanca
this February with a lineup of crazy-talented, super-daredevil racers. On Feb. 5-6, the U.S. Air Force Snocross National will take place at Seneca Allegany Casino & Hotel in Salamanca, N.Y. This is the second of an
eight-race national series of the ISOC-sanctioned AMSOIL Championship Snocross (ACS). In addition, the East Coast Snocross teams will be competing alongside ISOC national stars during the twoday, nationally televised event. International Series of Champions (ISOC) crew will work their magic for several weeks, turning one million gallons of water into snow to blanket a plot of land the size of a football field to create a racecourse filled with wicked twists and giant ramps to allow more than a dozen competitors at a time to catapult dozens of See Snocross page 4

Calling all intermediate to advanced female skiers! Holiday Valley Snowsports School is featuring the third annual “Your Turn” women’s clinic on Thursday and Friday, Feb. 11 and 12. The clinic will be led by Lisa Densmore Ballard, a widely acclaimed coach,
instructor and ski racer, and assisted by several of Holiday Valley’s female instructors. Intermediate through advanced level skiers who can comfortably ski blues and some black diamonds will benefit from this clinic. The clinic will include, talks about ski equipment and
proper boot fitting, continental breakfast an lunches both days and Thursday evening dinner, plenty of skiing with Lisa and HV Instructors, video analysis of each participant, demo equipment and door prizes. Mansfield Employees Get Municipal IDs Town Reorganizes for 2016 By Jann Wiswall
All Town of Mansfield employees and elected officials are in the process of obtaining official identification cards from the County’s Department of Emergency Services (DES). The new program is intended
to ensure that only authorized municipal employees in the county can be cleared to enter emergency areas within their municipalities. Emergency areas include those that have been damaged by natural or man-made disasters, such as floods, ice storms, tornados, chemical spills, etc.
While the IDs will be required for municipal employees who have an official need to be in an emergency area, they also are important as employees perform their daily duties. Residents can now ask anyone who says they are an employee of Mansfield to show See Mansfield page 4
EVL Board Approves Local Noise Law Hearing Set for Zoning Law By Jann Wiswall
The Town of Ellicottville’s board passed an amended Local Noise Law at its Wednesday, Jan. 20 meeting following a public hearing. Cheri Giancarlo, whose
noise pollution problems with a logging operation near her home prompted the board to review and revise certain sections of the law, attended the hearing. She asked the board for clarification of Section 5a, which specifies permitted noises within the limits of the town “by persons engaged
in logging, construction, building, repairing, grading, leveling, excavating during the hours of 7 a.m. to 9 p.m., Monday through Friday.” Giancarlo pointed out that weekend permitted hours should be specified. The board agreed and added SeeTown Board page 11

Performing at Balloons for Winter Blues South Blossom Records announces the release of international touring and Buffalo-based recording artist Tommy Z’s fourth full-length commercial CD entitled, Blizzard of Blues ofďŹ cially worldwide on Feb. 5, 2016. Tommy is performing as part of the 2016 Winter Blues Festival with a show at Balloons Nightclub on Saturday, Jan. 23 at 6 p.m. There will advance copies of the CD available at the show for those who pre-order online at www.tommyzband.com. Behind stunning cover art which depicts him walking alone with a guitar in a stormy winter setting, is a collection of nine songs, eight of which were penned by Tommy, plus a funky cover of a Muddy Waters classic. The songs range stylistically from guitardriven post-war electric blues, to hard-rockin’ blues, to cool jazz/blues, and even an uplifting pop/gospel blues with a story about a premature baby. There are seven vocal tracks all sung by Tommy, and two instrumentals. The single, “Going to a Partyâ€? is already a crowd favorite, destined to be a hit and likely to be added to the list of fun songs by cover bands around the world. Tommy produced/mixed and had a hand in engineering all the tracks and the list of musicians who played on the
album, including the legendary Jerry Livingston on bass and an appearance by Jeremy Keyes on blues harp. The album concept and rocking title song, Blizzard of Blues, was born after driving on NY’s 219 Expressway during a blizzard, where cars were sliding off the road, and emergency vehicles were towing them out. “I had never written a song that combined Buffalo weather with the blues, and so after getting home safe and having a bite to eat, I wrote the song.â€? The lyrics about peril, losing your woman, and at times comic relief add to the heavy blues and memorable riffs of the cut. Another interesting fact about the recording is that Tommy got the news about a close personal friend and business associate passing away about 90 minutes before the ďŹ rst of two recording sessions at Robby Takac’s (Goo Goo Dolls) GCR Recording Studio. “It was upsetting to say the least, but I didn’t tell anybody; not my bandmates, the engineer or anyone.â€? Instead, that emotion made its way onto the recording for at least half the tracks on the album, including the nearly nine minute long epic slow blues called Blues For KP, named after his deceased friend. Blizzard of Blues is the
highly anticipated follow-up to Sometimes (2013). which made the Top 50 Blues Charts fo radio airplay, and was given a Grammy nod for the ďŹ rst round of voting for Top Blues Album that year. Since then, Tommy and his band have continued to play venues, events and festivals in the US/ Canada and most recently in Colombia,, South America, where keeping consistent with his work as an educator, Tommy ran master classes and blues music seminars along with the concert performances there. feet into the air. The track’s tight quarters offer thrilling bar-to-bar racing action with plenty of side bumping as the 400-pound sleds race shoulder to shoulder at high speeds. More than 200 of North America’s top snocross racers and nearly a dozen from countries worldwide will compete in individual races that are broken down by age, gender and snowmobile type. To date, Tucker Hibbert is the points leader in the Pro Open class (premier class) with a 32-point lead. He’s the nine-time defending Pro Open champion who is competing for his 10th title this winter. “This season is going really good. It started a little slow, but I feel like we really found our groove at the third stop of the series and things are really clicking now,” he said. Tens of thousands of adoring fans are expected to cheer for
their favorite racers. Piercing bright lights wash over the track during Friday’s and Saturday’s evening races, the main events that will be taped for television by CBS Sports Network. You can even watch the races streamed online on U-Stream. Various vendors, selling everything from promotional items and snowmobile gear to food and beverages, will also be on site. Hibbert said, “Racing in New York is always exciting, because the fans are really passionate. Salamanca has done a nice job putting on the races the past couple years. The track was good last year, but I hope it’s bigger this year.” Snowmobiling is a hugely popular pastime in the Southern Tier with close to 20,000 registered snowmobiles. In New York State, snowmobiling is a $1 billion industry, as evidenced by the turnout at
each Snocross event held in Salamanca the past few years. Snowmobilers in the area can now enjoy a recently constructed 1.5-mile snowmobile trail that connects Seneca Allegany Casino & Hotel to Allegany State Park’s 90-plus miles of scenic trails, allowing fans to come and watch the events on their own snowmobiles. Of course, there will be generous parking available and shuttles will bring in spectators from nearby locations in Salamanca. their ID. According to Town Supervisor Bob Keis, who explained the program at the town board’s January 18 meeting, “IDs are only given to authorized employees. If someone says they’re an employee and you don’t know them, ask for their ID to be sure.” Keis said that DES staff told him that Mansfield is the first municipality in the county to request the IDs for their employees. In other board business, Keis reported that the town’s attorney was consulted about drafting a road bonding law to ensure that the town highway
superintendent can demand compensation for damage to town roads caused by “highimpact equipment” such as logging and construction vehicles. The attorney felt that existing NYS vehicle and traffic safety law already provides municipal protection and that a town-specific law is unnecessary. Going forward, companies with heavy equipment that expect to be frequent users of town roads and risk damaging roadways must clear the project with town highway superintendent Brad Hurley before work begins to determine if bonds from an approved bonding agency are
required. As this was the first meeting of the new year, the Mansfield board officially reviewed and approved existing policies and procedures and reappointed most staff/officials to their respective posts. The only change made was to appoint Margaret Puszcz as chair of the Planning Board of Appeals to replace Marilyn Hintz who resigned the post. The board also reduced the mileage reimbursement rate for municipal employees to $.50 per mile from $.53. The next meeting of the Mansfield Board is scheduled for Monday, Feb. 15 at 7 p.m. in the town hall.

ECS Alpine Race Team Takes Off By Caitlin Croft
Ellicottville Central School’s Alpine Race Team kicked off its fourth competitive season with some great showings at the first two Section VI events against The Gow School. ECS and Gow are the only two area schools that compete in Section VI. On Wednesday, Jan. 13, the men’s and women’s teams opened their season at Holiday Valley with a Giant Slalom Race. Orry Shattenberg took gold for Varsity Men, winning by 1.26 seconds, and Joshua Allegra placed third for the team. ECS’s only Modified athlete, Adrian Deorbe, placed fifth overall for the men. Logan Fredrickson won the race for Varsity Women with her sister Hayly coming in a close second place. Shelby Toth took fourth place in the home opener. On Saturday, Jan. 16, the team traveled to Swain Resort for a GS double header. The race was held by Section V, which is allowing the two Section VI teams to compete with them. The women’s team saw much success with Logan Fredrickson again sweeping the field and taking first place in both races. Hayly Fredrickson was a close third in the first race and took second place in the second race. Shelby Toth took fourth in the second race. Shattenberg had another strong showing for the men’s team, coming in sixth in the second race of the day. Jesse Both had a great day, taking sixth and ninth places. Victor Rieman took 29th and 33rd respectively. Deorbe came in fifth and ninth place for the Modified team.
“Athletes from other school districts are encouraged to join the ECS team. They just need to fill out the proper documentation and get approval from their school board,” Fredrickson says. He hopes this will lead to more schools with teams in Section VI. Fredrickson says that, while conditions didn’t allow the team much time on the snow early in the season, “the team benefited from the three weeks in the new school weight room working on physical conditioning before we were able to get on skis. It’s the gateway between the WNY southtowns and the southern tier, located at the southern tip of Erie County. Feeling On Edge Lately?

I have written tips on “edges� before, but you can never develop enough edging skills, or edge awareness. PSIA, our professional educational association, for a long time used the acronym B.E.R.P. (Balance, Edging, Rotary and Pressure) as the four skills we work on to enhance our own and our athletes/guests performance. As I have stated before, we don’t keep score in skiing. Take a golf lesson and your handicap comes down, but unless you are on a competitive team, when you take a ski lesson there is no number to change, or competitor to beat. It is very singular and personal. You need to keep active and expanding your skill level, and in return this will expand your comfort zone and open much more terrain on mountains you ski. We don’t teach you how to “make a parallel turn� or teach you “the bumps� or how to “ski powder.� We give
you enhanced skills that give you the conďŹ dence and tactics to be able to ski these varied conditions. Now on to the edges. Your skis are either on edge – tipped at any angle – or on no edge – at ski. You must be able to balance and manage your skis no matter their relation to the snow surface. On a moderate terrain, with feet comfortably apart and in a traverse, roll both your knees and ankle slowly uphill and get a sense of the increased edge engagement. The more you tip your skis, the more edge engagement. Now rise and let your body move slightly down hill and let your skis atten and allow your skis to slip sideways down the fall-line. Now apply edging again until you are leaving two clear tracks in the snow. Do this across the slope the other way. Now make a large radius turn and, when comfortable, pick up your inside ski, put it down before the end of the turn and repeat on the next turn. Do this for several runs. When comfortable with this, in the same size turns, pick up your outside ski. Do this carefully. We are accustomed to relying on our outside ski for turn shape and speed control so do this where you are very comfortable. Learning the feel and sense of that inside ski will enhance your skills and
awareness in all your skiing. Do this for several runs. When you feel real sporty, alternate picking up your outside ski, then your inside ski, then your outside, then inside again. Do this within your comfort zone. This will give you a sense of balancing on both skis in a turn and the role each plays in your skiing. Try to do this while leaving clean arcs in the snow, so you are going from edge to edge. Once you do this with ease, pay attention to the number of things you are doing with your knees, ankles and center of mass to initiate control and manage each turn. Much of learning and improving is self-awareness – the sense of your body moving in space. Pay attention to all the feedback you’re getting from your feet, your eyes and all of your senses and try to relate all that to what you are doing. The more you tune in, the more you are going to become a highly skilled and tactical all-mountain skier. Building Core Stiffness

For the past several decades, traditional core training has included exercises such as sit-ups, back extensions and twists. However, in recent years, many have found that isometric core exercise might be a better way to develop core strength and stiffness. Core stiffness is vital for athletes and non-athletes alike, because it strengthens muscles, improves muscular
endurance, reduces low back pain and boosts performance. Greater core stiffness transfers strength and speed to the limbs, increases the load-bearing capacity of the spine and protects internal organs during movements. A landmark study by Benjamin Lee and Stuart McGill in 2015 and published in the Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research showed that isometric exercises for the core resulted in greater core stiffness than performing whole-body exercises that were formerly the go-to for building strong core muscles. Some of the isometric core exercises for all individuals desiring a stiffer core include planks, bird dogs, side-bridges, stir-the-pot using a Swiss ball, carry exercises, inverted rows and cable wood chops. For the competitive athlete, there are dynamic core
exercises such as curl-ups, superman’s, lateral medicine ball throws and rotational medicine ball throws, just to name a few. And, for what it’s worth, the old advice of “suck in your gut and stand up straight” is also sound and proven to be an isometric way of keeping your core strong. Just don’t hold your breath while doing it, or for that matter any core exercise. None of this means that if you are doing whole-body dynamic exercises that you are wasting your time or not building a stronger core and body. All this study suggests is that isometric exercises build better stiffness. So, continue to train and to train smart. Never hesitate to ask a professional for help with form and function. There is no “dumb question” in the fitness industry, which is constantly evolving.

permitted hours for the above types of work on Saturdays and Sundays from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. The law also specifies that sound related to farming is permitted throughout the town from sunup to sunset seven days per week. Sound created by homeowners’ lawnmowers or power tools is permitted from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Friday and from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. on weekends. Such noise-producing activities are prohibited at all other times. The board’s goal throughout the process has been to strengthen existing law and clarify ambiguities to ensure that residents are not subjected to long-term noise pollution from industry or agricultural activities. At the same time, the law ensures that people are able to earn a living and is enforceable. No changes were made to the existing law related to prohibited noise from music, loudspeakers, animals, etc. The full text of the law can be found on the town’s website at ellicottvillegov.com or in the clerk’s office in the town hall. Town Supervisor Matt McAndrew reported that he attended a training seminar sponsored by the State for first-time municipal officials. He said he expects to attend another training program sponsored by Southern Tier West in the spring. McAndrew had a request from the state police, who maintain a substation on the first floor of the town/village hall, for some designated storage space in a closet on the second floor. Town Engineer/ Highway Superintendent Mark Alianello said that the closet in question contains the access panel to the attic, so the police would not be permitted to have the only key. The board could not think of any other available space. McAndrew also reported that he was appointing a board committee (including Ken Hinman and Greg Fitzpatrick, with Mark Alianello) to finalize the highway superintendent job description. The description
needs to be approved by the full board and be submitted to the County Civil Service Commission for its approval. McAndrew noted that there is some urgency to get the process completed and asked the appointed committee to meet in time for a special meeting he scheduled for Wednesday, Jan. 27 at 4 p.m. in the town/village hall. The board was also asked to schedule a public hearing on proposed zoning law changes. Alianello explained that the Town Planning Board had been working for months on making needed changes to the existing zoning law to address types of businesses that had not previously been included, such as food trucks and distilleries. In addition, the planning board amended the definitions of some businesses and clarified land uses to allow for them. The public hearing will be held at the board’s next regular meeting on Weds., Feb. 17. Alianello also reported that he and a committee formed to head the search for a new town planner had interviewed three companies/individuals that had submitted proposals. The committee expects to make a recommendation to the board next month. Under old business, Alianello reported that the state Department of Transportation approved Ellicottville’s and the Town of Ashford request to reduce the speed limit on Town Line Road to 45 mph. Finally, McAndrew said he is looking into designing a sign for the town highway garage, which will be named after former highway superintendent Dave Golley. McAndrew also suggested that the road to the garage be named “Dave Golley Drive.” The board was enthusiastic about the idea and will schedule a dedication ceremony after clearing dates with Golley’s family. The next regular meeting of the Town of Ellicottville’s board will be held at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 17 in the town/village hall.

Randolph Schools Seeks Supt. Moritz Heads to SGI By Mary Heyl
“How can you ever have a down day when surrounded by young people?” This question from soon-to-be Superintendent of Schools at Springville-Griffith Institute (SGI), Kimberly Moritz, is more than just a rhetorical musing. It is a reflection of her inspiring experience as superintendent of Randolph Central School (RCS), a position that she has held since October 2008. As Moritz embarks on her new journey at SGI, which she assumes on March 7, she leaves behind a school district that has grown tremendously under her guidance and collaboration with the board of education, administration, faculty and student body. Although Moritz leaves large shoes to fill, she has certainly left RCS in a strong, healthy position to grow under the leadership of its next superintendent. In her time at RCS, Moritz has prioritized the quality of students’ education while partnering with families and the school community, a goal set out by the BOE from the beginning. Continuity has been a large part of the BOE and Moritz’s plan for RCS so that student achievement is maximized from kindergarten through grade 12. “We work to give every child a consistent pathway through our schools in which the content of the curriculum each child is taught isn’t solely dependent upon the teacher the child has that year. Instead, we have developed cross-classroom and cross-grade level collaboration between our teachers with alignment to the NYS standards.” The proof is in the pudding, as Randolph’s performance has surpassed that of most area schools. Moritz is proud to share that RCS experienced the sharpest three-year gains in state achievement tests (as measured by Buffalo’s Business First) than any district in Western New York. Significant gains for RCS also include the school’s impressive record for school taxes. According to Moritz, “The BOE has a strong history of solid financial decisions and they worked hard to maintain a 0% increase in taxes from 2009-2014 while managing reserves and working to put together a prudent capital project that takes care of many of our basic needs like heating, rooftops, replacing the track and improving our science labs.” It’s hard to talk about RCS without mentioning its athletic programs, including the championship-winning varsity football team. Celebrating Randolph’s state championships are among the many fond memories Moritz has of her time as superintendent. Perhaps even more meaningful to Moritz are the everyday moments she shares with Randolph’s student body. For several years, Moritz has opened her office doors to share lunch with her students. “The group who started this graduated three years ago, and I love keeping in touch with them. They stop in to see me on college breaks, invite me to lunch—that’s the rewarding part of those relationships—knowing that I may make a tiny difference in their lives and that they value the relationship enough to keep it going upon graduation.” The school community at SGI promises to be just as passionate and enthusiastic about the road ahead as Moritz is. During the interview process, Moritz met more than 50 SGI residents, including BOE members, who are all eager to work with their new superintendent. “I can’t wait to support all of the right things at SGI, things good and caring people have likely quietly been doing all along, and to help everyone improve those things that aren’t so right about the district. In my experience, the good, caring and hard-working people and students always outweigh those who don’t care…I can’t wait to get started!” RCS is currently seeking applicants for the position of superintendent. According to Board President Michael Evans, “The Board of Education is seeking an enthusiastic, knowledgeable, proven educational leader who is committed to maintaining and encouraging a climate of excellence for students, faculty, and the community and our culture of high expectations.” Evans encourages interested applicants to view and submit the application well before the February 29 deadline.
