At the core of puzzle game design is the principle of challenge and satisfaction Humans are naturally inclined to solve problems, and puzzle games offer a structured environment for this (Brooks, 2023) By engaging with puzzles, players experience a sense of competence and mastery as they progress, boosting self-esteem with each solved challenge The game ’ s design typically guides players toward progressively harder puzzles, ensuring that the difficulty remains balanced This progression is crucial in maintaining player motivation, as the challenges need to be stimulating but achievable (Pusey, Wong, & Rappa, 2021)

Puzzle games also provide mental health benefits The predictable, rule-based nature of puzzles offers a sense of control, which can be a welcome respite in the unpredictable world Additionally, their ability to hold our attention, without mentally exasperating us enables to take what therapist Olivia James refers to as “ a little holiday from yourself”. When coupled with aesthetically pleasing visuals and audio, plus elegant gameplay the result is a calming environment which enables emotional regulation, helping players shift from states of anxiety to, logical thinking (Hannah, 2021)

The popularity of the puzzle game genre is only set to grow, with an expected annual growth rate of 7.70% through 2029 where the market will reach $30.09 billion.
Puzzle games provide a unique lens for exploring social and cultural dynamics, offering players an interactive way to engage with diverse narratives and traditions. These games transcend entertainment, becoming tools for cultural expression, education, and preservation For example, Never Alone, developed in partnership with Alaska Native communities, authentically captures the stories and traditions of the Inupiat people.
