HELLO & Welcome Back! One of our favorite subjects to highlight in the Elk River magazine are new businesses springing up in our Elk River communities. This month we were honored to feature three of seven new businesses, and that is the best Christmas gift of all. When people want to consider the River down and out, think again. These amazing communities indeed rise from the ashes and the flood waters. This month in our Elk Reflects, we also remember Greasy Gandee who was an icon to the HHHS Athletic Department and our community. He was the ultimate caretaker of the Hoover fields, and he did so because of his big heart and love for the athletes and the school. We will take his memory with us to the new Hoover fields next year. Check out our Around the Elk and make plans to visit some of the great holiday light shows and festivities this month. It’s easy to get caught up in the hustle and bustle and forget about making time for fellowship. Enjoying the holiday season with others makes everything seem merrier. Also, don’t forget to remember those who can’t get out this season. A card, a phone call, or a visit can help bring the holiday spirit to them. We would be amiss if we didn’t remind everyone to try to shop local this Christmas, and every day when possible as a matter of fact. When you support our many local businesses it is not only purchasing a gift for someone, but it is, in exchange, a gift for the businesses as well. The bottom line for many businesses after the holiday season can be a tough one. Whether you are shopping or dining, remember to patronize our local businesses. While the WVU Humanities Center will be pausing its programming for the holiday season, we have some great book suggestions for you to continue your favorite cultural pastimes. Of course, if you missed any of our past events, you can always watch—or rewatch your favorites—on the Humanities Center YouTube Channel, using the QR code.

For the art lover: Currently, the National Galleries in Washington, DC are showcasing a special exhibit of the works of the Dutch master Johannes Vermeer. However, if a trip to the capital is not in your holiday plans, perhaps check out Vermeer and the Art of Love by Aneta Geogievska-Shine. This luminous book has not only many of Vermeer’s work, but influences and contemporaries, giving it the feel of a guided tour through his masterworks on love.

For the Appalachian folklorist: “In the mind of a horse, fences were made for one thing: escaping. And our horses did frequently.” Normal Jean Venable sets down the history of her patch of land in Tales of Dunkard Ridge: Life and Lore from a West Virginia Hill Farm. From sketches of plants to historical photos, and occasionally a recipe, this book of folk history combines the great storytelling tradition of our state, with a sense of resolve and a sense of humor in equal parts.

For the literature lover: The state’s Poet Laureate, Marc Harshman contributes a slender in size but robust in emotion West Virginia-based collection, Dark Hills of Home. From a new imprint, Monongahela Books, this small book packs a lot of punch per line. It’s diminutive size also makes it a perfect stocking stuffer.

West Virginia’s own Hello June has just taken the Mountain State by storm, but outlets like NPR and Paste Magazine have recognized the band’s unique sound. Like The Cranberries and other heroes of sweeping ‘90s guitar rock, Hello June are adept at drawing maximum emotion from just a few simple riffs. You can catch their videos on YouTube or check out their eponymous first album on streaming services like Spotify, or for old school music lovers, on vinyl.

hese are a great breakfast and the traditional Christmas morning breakfast on Walker Mtn. The leftovers (if you have any) are awesome cold or reheated! Gabi said, “These are actually a combination of two recipes. I just kind of take some of the ingredients from one, add in some from another, and create my own version. I think I could almost eat the whole pan myself.”

BREAKFAST STICKY BUNS

INGREDIENTS

DIRECTIONS

20 frozen hot roll dough balls

•

1 - 3.5 oz box Jello Cook-n-Serve vanilla pudding mix (not instant)

Step 1: Spray a 9x13 baking dish with cooking spray. Step 2: Spread 1/2C pecan chips on the bottom of dish. Lay frozen roll dough

•

3/4 C pecan chips

•

1/2 C butter

•

1/2 C light brown sugar

Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

Step 3: In a small saucepan over medium heat, melt butter and brown sugar together until a smooth sauce forms. Drizzle butter/brown sugar mixture all over the rolls. Sprinkle with remaining 1/4C pecans.W

Step 4: Set the baking dish in a cold oven overnight (rolls will thaw and rise). The next morning, remove the baking dish of sticky buns from the oven.

Step 5: Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Bake Sticky Buns 30-35 mins until golden brown.

These need to be prepared the night before you plan to bake and serve them.

BREAD & BUTTER PICKLES

e asked for canning recipes to keep coming in for us to share with our Elk River Living readers, and Merla Copen Prowse of Elkview sent us her delicious recipe for Bread and Butter Pickles. We especially love these for the holiday season because the red bell pepper slices mixed with the green cucumbers make a lovely display of red and green in a dish on your table at Christmas!

BREAD & BUTTER PICKLES

Canning Recipe • Water Bath

From the Kitchen of Merla Copen Prowse

INGREDIENTS

DIRECTIONS

30 to 35 pickling cucumbers sliced ¼ inch thick

Step 1: In a big bowl or pot combine the sliced cucumbers, salt, onion and

½ cup pickling or kosher salt

•

1 Large yellow onion diced

•

1 large Green Bell Pepper

•

1 Large Red Bell Pepper

•

7 cups White Vinegar

•

6 cups granulated Sugar

•

½ teaspoon ground Cloves

•

1 Tablespoon Mustard Seed

•

2 Teaspoons Celery Seed

•

1 ½ teaspoons turmeric For best flavor, let pickles sit for 3-4 weeks. Store jars in a cool, dry place for up to a year. If a jar doesn’t seal. store in the refrigerator for up to 3 months.

Step 2: Drain the cucumber mixture and set aside. Make the brine by

bringing the vinegar, sugar, cloves, mustard seed, celery seed, and turmeric to a boil in a large pot over high heat. Meanwhile, prepare a boiling water canner. Heat the jars and lids in simmering water until ready to use. Do not boil. Set bands aside.

Step 3: Place equal amounts of cucumbers, onions, and bell peppers into

each hot jar. Press down the mixture, as it will rise when you pour In the brine.

Step 4: Use a funnel or ladle to pour hot pickling liquid over top of the

cucumbers, leaving a ½ inch headspace. Remove any air bubbles. Wipe the rims with a clean, damp paper towel. Center the lids on the jars and tighten the bands until it fits fingertip tight.

Step 5: Process jars in the boiling water canner for about 30 minutes.

Remove the jars and allow to cool completely on the counter for 24 hrs. Check the lids to make sure they are sealed.

TYREE’S MAGICAL LIGHT EXHIBIT One of ERL’s favorite activities is to drive through the Christmas light exhibit hosted by Kermit and Joann Tyree on Aaron’s Fork. There are more than 20 acres of twinkling, blinking, and flashing lights accenting the Christmas blow-up displays, nativity scenes and, of course, jolly old St. Nick with his sleigh and reindeer. It is a wonderful ohhh and ahhhh experience that you won’t want to miss, and you will want to go back year after year.

“You will know when you come to our property,” said Kermit. “It is located on Aaron’s Fork approximately 6.5 miles from the bridge at the Aaron’s Fork split. Our light display starts with a 2-3 miles of lighted fence and a 150-foot decorated barn and 9-car garage.” Many of the neighbors have their homes decorated along Aarons Fork as well as you travel toward the Tyree Christmas light exhibit. It is a gorgeous winter wonderland.

There is no admission so it’s a perfect evening to take a drive with the whole family, including grandparents and grandkids. Joanne and Kermit said, “Sharing the joy of Christmas with our community is the only payment we need.” Visitors can drive by every evening after 5 PM starting after Thanksgiving.

COONSKIN’S ANNUAL HOLIDAY LIGHTS & KVRA’S MODEL RAILROAD EXHIBIT Another community favorite is Coonskin Park’s Annual Holiday Light Show. Don’t forget about the amazing Kanawha Valley Railroad Association’s (KVRA) model train exhibit at the end of the Park after you drive through and enjoy the lights. KVRA will be celebrating their 45th year of serving our community and opening its doors once again during the Coonskin Light Show for holiday visitors.

The train exhibit is open throughout the year every Sunday from 1 PM to 4 PM (weather/staff permitting), and during the Coonskin Light Show they are open extended hours during the week and weekend. What's new on the Elk River trail?

f you have been to Clendenin lately, you already know the answer! A 1.0 mile section of the new trail from the north Clendenin Trailhead to the gazebo at the entrance to Main Street in Clendenin has been paved with asphalt! This section is already a favorite for walkers who are pushing strollers as well as for individuals who want to enjoy the trail with a wheelchair or motorized wheelchair. Having a handicapped accessible section of the trail provides an additional segment of the population an opportunity to enjoy the outdoors.

Mayor Kay Summers said, “ Our goal is to extend the paved section from the gazebo to Brown Street in Reamer which will be another 1.2 miles for a total of 2.2 miles.” The new paved section of trail will also increase traffic into Town and its businesses which will help boost the economy of the Clendenin area.

THE ELK RIVER WALKING CLUB TAKES ADVANTAGE OF THE WARM WEATHER The unseasonably warm weather that continues to come and go, and then come back, these last two months has made it great for the Elk River Trail Walkers! The Club meets every Tuesday during the winter season at 4 PM at the north end of the trail in Clendenin (Maywood Avenue).

There is parking at the trail and at the adjoining boat launch. Sometimes they will meet at the gazebo at the end of Main Street in Clendenin on the new paved segment. There is free meter parking after 5 PM. Grab a jacket and your tennis shoes and join them any Tuesday you can make it.

Kennedy is a model for Supermodels Unlimited magazine and also has a collaboration with SU Cosmetics of her own shade of Supermodels Unlimited lip gloss at the boutique. She said, “I do a lot of custom items for schools and local businesses such as t-shirts, hats, tumblers, and hair bows. I just created t-shirts and other promotional items for Chandler’s Pumpkin Farm, Clendenin Town Hall, Clay County Agricultural Fair, Herbert Hoover Project Graduation, H.E. White Elementary, and Clendenin Elementary.”

Another unique feature at ERB is the squeeze wax for electric warmers. Customers can choose their favorite scent or they can build their own unique squeeze wax scent. Also at ERB is a “make your own craft” area where Lisa offers creative make-and-take workshops. She said, “I have offered a variety of things--in September I advertised a Pumpkin Door Hanger event and people purchased tickets in advance. We also had Girls Night Out with local vendors, makeup demonstrations, and snacks, plus attendees chose to make a pair of the popular macrame earrings or a Heishi clay beaded bracelet. In November we had Pink Friday. Watch our Facebook page for our upcoming events”

Lisa said, “I wanted to help other local businesses, so when you buy an item at ERB, you many times are also supporting other local businesses. I think it’s important to work together to help our local businesses succeed!” She said other new local vendors will be coming to her boutique soon. “Community over competition is our goal!”, she added. For the winter season the Boutique has an array of seasonal and holiday baseball tees and short and long-sleeved t’s. They also have skirts, jeans, dresses, leggings, cardigans, wraps, Simply Southern attire, canvas loafers, and more. They will also be offering a stocking stuffer bar, holiday clothing and decor, and gift wrapping services for ERB purchases on weekends. If you aren’t convinced you need to stop by ERB yet, let me add one more enticement. Lisa has her own coffee and hot cocoa bar with delicious syrups, sauces, candy mix-ins, flavored creamers and whipped cream for her shoppers. The owner, Christopher Marple, assisted by his mother, Terry Dobbins, opened the coffee shop mid-June. Chris said, “Our idea was to open something that would support our community but that would also be simple for us.” He explained his mom has a business background and has had several businesses.

Main Street Coffee in downtown Sutton offers both hot and iced coffee. They have a large assortment of flavored syrups so you can choose your favorite flavor. Their newest flavor for holidays were, you guessed it, two new pumpkin syrups: Pumpkin Spice and Pumpkin Pie Syrup. They also have added some great winter flavors, including Mocha Peppermint and Candy Cane. If you haven’t tried one of their delicious homemade scones, you are missing one of Elk River’s best kept secrets. Terry’s

mom, Jackie Johnson, and her sister, Lisa Rader, make blueberry and blackberry scones. Depending on the day, you may also find a variety of other scones such as their new Honey Oat Nut Caramel Apple and the Maple Orange Pecan muffins, banana bread, cookies and even gluten free items. Terry said, “Jackie and Lisa tried several different combinations of scone recipes and I believe they have perfected it now because they are amazing!” Main Street Coffee also offers panini sandwiches. They have two panini makers and customers can choose the original ham or turkey sandwiches or one of the new Italian, Reuben or Rachel paninis. A sandwich and a bag of chips is $6.50, which is a great price for the Braxton County working crowd or for visitors. For everyone who just needs a quick snack, Main Street Coffee also has homemade mini pepperoni rolls. “They are about 6 inches long and you get pepperoni in every bite,” said Chris. “We package them three in a bag and they are the perfect size to toss in your backpack for a trail ride or just for a quick snack anytime.” They also have marinara sauce and other dipping sauces for the pepperoni rolls. There is nothing like a delicious cup of coffee and delicious baked goods to get your day started right! The next time you are in Sutton, stop in Main Street Coffee. Their breakfast, lunch and snack menu will make sure you leave with a smile.

It is owned by Moriah Scher who specializes in gemstone and fine metal jewelry as well as copper and prism suncatchers. Her boutique is an eclectic mix of jewelry, crystals and gems, suncatchers, hand-selected clothing, stained glass, hand-carved, homemade candles, incense, smudge sticks, cards, photographs, handmade soaps, and other specialized gifts.There is something for everyone, including options for custom-made jewelry.

Moriah makes her own exquisite jewelry out of gemstones and wire wrapping. She uses fine silver and 14K gold wire so all of her items are personally hand-shaped and wire-wrapped from high quality materials. Additionally, she has a series that is copper hand-hammered that she shapes and then adds her gemstones.

You can also find a great selection of suncatchers at her boutique which Moriah creates out of prisms and upcycled copper. She has a variety of different sizes and themes, from moons, peace signs, holiday, and other unique designs. She said, “The suncatchers are an excellent way to bring positive

light and rainbows through your home or office. If placed in the right window, they send great light through the whole house.” Moriah started out as a photographer and received her degree from Savannah College of Art and Design. She began creating her own jewelry 13 years ago. Her original business, Darkroom Jeweler, was a combination of her love for photography and jewelry. This year she decided to open her own shop. “It has been a lot of work traveling, loading up merchandise, breaking down tables, etc., when I was attending craft shows, festivals and farmer’s market venues. I decided it was time to have a permanent location and put down some roots. I grew up in Sutton and downtown Main Street had lost several businesses in the past few years and it needed some new life. It was the perfect location.” She explained her birthstone is a garnet, which was part of the inspiration for her new store name, Garnet Moon Boutique. “The other part is my love for the moon phases and their effect on the Earth.” No stranger to managing businesses, Moriah and her husband, Daniel, are both business owners. He

I’m drawn to crystals and gemstones because of their translucent nature. I’m drawn to light maybe because my art originated in photography. As a photographer, it’s all about light. This month’s featured poet is Debbie Richard who was born in Parkersburg, WV, and lived in Walton, WV. She spends time between her home state of West Virginia and the beautiful coast of South Carolina. She is listed in the Directory of Poets & Writers as both a poet and creative nonfiction writer. Her poems have appeared in various magazines and journals. Also, she was honored to be asked by the Family Crisis Intervention Center in WV to write a poem for their Domestic Violence Vigil that was held at Point Park in Parkersburg this October. ELK’S STUDENTS CROSS COUNTRY The EVCS Cross Country team did a great job at the first WVCEA Cross Country Meet. Jon Burgess placed 5th in the boys division and Alaina Moles placed 4th in the girls division. “It was exciting to attend our first State Meet and we are looking forward to returning next year.”

SOCCER The new EVCS soccer team gave it their all and finished their first WVCEA State Tournament with a second place win! They lost to Mercer Christian Academy 9-1.This is the first year EVCS has had a soccer team for many years so a big congratulations to them on their first season back and second place State win!

VOLLEYBALL

The Girls Volleyball team were runners up at the 2022 WVCAT Varsity Volleyball Tournament. They beat Morgantown 3-2 and Calvary 3-0 in the playoffs, but lost to Wood County Christian 3-1 in the championship game. They also played in the WVCEA Volleyball Tournament at the end of October where they were first runner up to Victory Baptist Academy. Senior members include: Kailin Legg, Kaitlyn Swor, Carlee Burdette, Kaylee Graham and Leah Synder.

FOOTBALL

The Huskies closed the season 7-2 and advanced to the WVSSAC playoffs, with their first game scheduled against Clay High School. October 21, 2022 was another final in the books for HHHS, the last game on the Joe Eddie Cowley Field. In true Huskie fashion, they closed it down with a 55-3 win against Mingo Central. J. Craig Allison said, “The Huskies have called “The Joe” home from 1965-2022. The new school and field will be ready when the 2023 season begins.” At the end of an emotional Final Lights Out ceremony, the lights were turned off for the final time at Joe Eddie Cowley Field.

SOCCER

CROSS COUNTRY

The HHHS Cross Country Girls Team fell one point short of qualifying for the states at the Region III Class AA Meet. Coach Luke Teel said, “I couldn’t have asked for a better performance from the girls’ team. I am so proud of all of our HHHS runners.” Runners Who Placed/Advanced to the States: Freshman Jenna Brown (5th place), Senior Karsen Fletcher (7th place) and Senior John Duval (2nd place). Placed at Regionals: Emma Cottrell (15th) and Regan Geary (20th). State Results: John Duval placed 21st, Karsen Fletcher was 35th, and Jenna Brown was 46th.

The wins keep coming and the HHHS Volleyball team is headed to the States! Their record to date is 38-4-1 and they are ranked 4th in Class AA MaxPreps. Senior members: Alaina Douglas, Abby Hanson, and Sydney Shamblin. Cardinal Conference Champions --Adkins, Ashton Henrich, and Sydney Shamblin Alltournament Team. Buffalo Battle in the Barn Tournament Champions at Buffalo High School-Sydney Shamblin, All Tournament Team. Capital Classic Tournament Champions-Brianna Adkins 1,000th assist and AllTournament Team; Sydney Shamblin 1,000th kill and the tournament’s MVP; Kaili Casto and Ashton Henrrich 1000 career serve receptions.

The HHHS boys soccer team finished 9-93. Senior players: Camron Buckner, Elijah Saunders, Jaylen Chandler, Grant Smith, Alec Lipscomb, and Ethan Adkins. Coach Don Mercer said, “I thank all who came out to support this team. They accomplished a lot this year with many new players. The seniors put their heart and soul into the team and I thank them all. They are still two-time Region 2 Champions and will always be remembered.”

The HHHS girls soccer team finished their season 7-10-2. Senior players: Kelsey Taylor, Emma Kee, Cailyn Maclellan, Aly Miller, Jillian Dolan, Chloe Nary, and Payslee Lyons. Coach Mike Strickland said, “Our girls soccer team tragically lost a teammate very early in the season. The team rallied together and played with heart the rest of the season, making it to the second round of Sectionals. It is an honor to coach and be part of such a wonderful group of girls. Also, thank you to the community for their support this season.”

The two-day event included a meet-and-greet reception at the Four Seasons Sheraton, followed by a breakfast at Harding's Family Restaurant. The next morning included a tour of the Elk Communities Museum followed by a dinner/dance back at the Sheraton. 3. COOK FOR FRIENDS & FAMILY For many people, one of the warmest ways to show love and appreciation during the holidays is through food. Whether you’re going to a potluck, cooking for a holiday gathering or volunteering at a local shelter, it can be difficult to prepare and serve meals when you’re experiencing shoulder or neck pain. To help prevent pain, try not to flex your neck for long periods of time. For example, when you’re trying to find the perfect recipe on Pinterest, hold your phone up in front of your face instead of looking down at it.

4. PUT UP HOLIDAY DECORATIONS

Is pain slowing you down and making your holiday season feel less than festive? Physical therapy is here to help you live pain-free so you can enjoy all of the activities that make the season so special. Here are five things physical therapy can help you do this holiday season:

1. HUGS! Whether it’s kids, grandkids, nieces, nephews, or other young family members, scooping up the little ones into bear hugs is a small thing that can bring a lot of joy during the holidays. Over 80% of people will experience back pain at some point in their lives, and it can keep you from something as simple as bending over for a hug. Practice picking up light objects like an empty laundry basket with your back straight and bending at the knees to help make proper lifting techniques a habit.

2. GIVE THE BEST GIFTS

Receiving gifts can be fun, but they don’t call it “the giving season” for nothing. Unfortunately, leg and foot pain can keep you on the couch instead of being out discovering and delivering the perfect gifts this season. Plantar fasciitis, tendinitis, muscle pain and even spine problems can create leg and foot pain. Be sure when you are out running all those errands to wear comfortable and supportive shoes. Take breaks between shopping at different stores to give your feet and legs some rest.

If dizziness, vertigo or other balance concerns are keeping you from throwing up those festive holiday decorations this year, remember that physical therapy can help treat a wide variety of balance and dizziness issues. These are typically caused by problems in your vestibular system (your inner ear) or by muscle imbalances. Physical therapists can identify the cause of the problem and help decrease symptoms through muscle strengthening and other exercises – because the only fall you should experience this holiday season is snowfall.

5. CELEBRATE THE SEASON The holidays can be jam-packed with activities like family gatherings, religious services, and holiday parties, but nagging pain can keep you from fully celebrating the season. Rather than masking pain with medications that can leave you feeling groggy and can wear off too soon, physical therapists can detect and treat the root cause of the problem so you feel comfortable making plans – and keeping them.
