HELLO & Welcome Back! I am always writing my welcome in advance during the preceding month, and it kind of made me sad thinking I am writing this one for our August issue. I’m not ready for it to be August already! Everything is green and lush and beautiful due to the daily (inevitable) rainfalls. We laughed and said our flower garden resembles a scene in Jurassic Park. Ken and I have been on the move all summer, watching the grandkids play ball, including Gage’s Legion team that played at WVU on their ballfield--that was exciting! We met up with our son, Josh, in DC for a mini vacation before my birthday. We have had the grandkids at the river house to ride dirt bikes and ATVs and raft in the river. We have enjoyed riding our bikes on the Elk River Trail and meeting new and old friends along the way. We have truly loved our non-pandemic summer. Speaking of the trail, we have included an informational article this month on the 10 trailheads that you can access along the Elk River Trail. People have questions as to where they should go, how many miles is each segment, etc., so we have the answers to your questions! One of the highlights of our summer, and one that we have featured in this month’s issue, is the long-awaited, grand opening of the Clendenin Brewery. Not that I’m a big beer drinker (those genes all went to brother Dave AKA Toehead (there is a Toehead Blonde beer at the Brewery), but I love the family-friendly, town-welcoming atmosphere when we visit Clendenin. Also, you just won’t find any two people with bigger Elk River hearts than Matt and Nikki Holbert. Check out our Elk River kids and their recent victories, including the Elk Elementary Center archers and the Herbert Hoover golfers! If you aren’t beaming with Elk River pride, it is only because you don’t know about their accomplishments, so here is your chance to read and celebrate their amazing skills. Take time, make time, to enjoy the rest of the summer. The kids are all off from school for a few more weeks. Lots of time to just enjoy the many attractions right here in our back door. Memories are the best gifts. Until next month, be safe and spread the Elk River love. We all need it right now more than ever.

MONTE CRISTO SLIDERS
his month Gabby Strickland Walker shares her delicious (and easy) recipe for Monte Cristo Sliders. A local restaurant, Bennigan’s, went out of business several years ago, and their Monte Cristo was amazing. Gabby said, “I have not found a Monte Cristo quite as good as the one at Bennigan’s, but this is by far my favorite imitation Monte Cristo that I’ve created at home.” Give it a try!
MONTE CRISTO SLIDERS INGREDIENTS
DIRECTIONS

SERVES 4-6 PREHEAT OVEN TO 350 DEGREES
Step 1: Spray a 9x13 baking dish with cooking spray

½ lb thinly sliced deli turkey (12 slices)
•
½ lb thinly sliced honey ham (12 slices)

12 slices of Provolone cheese
•
raspberry preserves
Step 4: Place a Provolone cheese slice on top of each slice of ham
•
1 - 12-pack Original King's Hawaiian Sweet Rolls
Step 6: Top each slice of turkey with about 1 T of raspberry preserves
Step 2: Slice rolls in half, and place bottom half in prepared pan Step 3: Start by adding a slice of ham on top of each roll Step 5: Top each Provolone cheese slice with a slice of turkey Step 7: Top each roll with a final slice of Provolone cheese
Honey Butter Topping:
Step 8: Now finish your sliders by adding the reserved roll tops from Step 2.

Step 1: In a small saucepan over medium heat, melt butter and honey

powdered sugar for dusting
together. When butter is melted add heaping tablespoon of flour and whisk until thick.
Step 2: Pour honey butter sauce over rolls, making sure all rolls are covered.

Step 3: Spray a piece of aluminum foil that is large enough to cover your

baking dish with cooking spray and place it over the rolls and bake covered for about 15-25 mins until heated through and the cheese is thoroughly melted. You can dust with powdered sugar if desired.

REMINDER
LET'S START AT THE Motor vehicles, ATVs, motorcycles and scooters are prohibited on the trail. The Elk River Trail is for walkers/ hikers/runners, horseback riders, and bikers. Class 1 ebikes and motorized wheelchairs are allowed on the trail.
COMING There will be a new paved trail section from the SOON
The trail is easily-accessible from I-79, which is the starting point for the directions below. Easy access points from I-79 (south to north) include the Elkview, Clendenin, Wallback/Clay, Big Otter, Servia, Frametown, and Sutton exits. The Elk River Trail runs along the east side of the beautiful Elk River Water Trail. Trail users are never far from the river and it is usually visible from the trail. From south to north, the trailheads are immediately across the river from U.S. Route 119 (Clendenin), WV State Route 4 (Clendenin to Procious), Elkhurst or Elk River Road (Procious to Hartland), WV State Route 16 (Hartland to Clay Junction), and again Route 4 (Clay Junction to Gassaway).
north Clendenin trailhead, through the town of Clendenin, to Brown Street in Reamer. This 1.2 mile segment is the only paved segment of the trail. Elk River Trail Foundation (ERTF) President Ken Tawney said, “This section is sure to be popular for wheelchair, motorized wheelchair, and handicap bike access.” The main Clendenin Trailhead will be constructed across the street from the Roxy Theater.
Queen Shoals Trailhead
The Queen Shoals trailhead is located on Queen Road about 4 miles north of Clendenin on Route 4. A former church building is on the right and there is parking beside and behind the building. The trail runs in front of the church downriver across the new trail bridge. COMING The 23.3-mile section of the trail from Queen SOON Shoals to Hartland is expected to open next
year. Right now, this section from Queen Shoals to Procious is not completed.
Hartland Trailhead Clendenin North Trailhead

An easy place to begin is the upper end of Clendenin at the end of Maywood Avenue where the new North Clendenin boat ramp launch was recently opened (near the old Clendenin Water Plant). There is parking at the mouth of the trail and at the boat launch. You can traverse 3.2 miles from there to Queen Shoals.

You can leisurely walk/bike as far as you want and turn around and walk back. A good way to get started is to go on Tuesdays at 6 PM and join in with the Elk River Walking Club. There are all ages and all skill levels of walkers who meet up every Tuesday to walk and enjoy the trail. There are several airBNB rooms available in town for out-of-area visitors.
The next open segment of the trail is from Hartland to Dundon in Clay County. From here, you could ride 45.4 miles to Gassaway on a grade that exceeds one-percent in only two small places – virtually flat! You can also just walk/hike/bike to the next trailhead at Dundon which is only 5 miles away.

Continuing on our adventure, welcome to the Dundon Trailhead, just across the river from the county seat, the Town of Clay, and close to the center of the trail. It is a picturesque site featuring a vine-covered steel railroad bridge where Buffalo Creek flows into Elk River. From here you can travel north 11.9 miles to the Ivydale Trailhead.
Dundon, for a small fee, you will soon be able to ride the Buffalo Creek rail cars at the small “train station” beside the Little League ballpark. The rails-with-trails section runs 18 miles through virtually uninhabited land along Buffalo Creek to Widen. You can ride in openair rail-carts pulled by a jitney, or rent pedal carts to navigate the rail trail. The bridges that were washed out during the Flood of 2016 are currently being restored. The ERTF is hopeful this section will be completed this fall. The Buffalo Creek Lodge and Campground is also located here.
Ivydale Trailhead
The Ivydale Trailhead is tucked away in a small community that once featured a railroad depot when trains and the river were the primary source of access before roads were built for vehicular travel. It’s an easy 10 miles to continue on to the next trailhead at Duck.
Duck Trailhead
The Duck Trailhead was the first to open, and if you travel downriver after a fresh rain, you may be lucky enough to witness the Mermaid Lagoon waterfall! You can also stop to enjoy a sandwich or a hand-scooped ice cream cone at Nottingham’s General Store next to the trail. There is plenty of parking at the trailhead and at the DNR’s Duck Boat Launch adjoining the trail. It’s an easy 3.2 miles on to the Strange Creek Trailhead.

Legend has it that the skeleton of William Strange, for whom the creek is named, was found on a ridge at the foot of a large beech tree upon which his name had been cut with the following words: “Strange is my name, and I’m on strange ground, And strange it is that I can’t be found.” (WV Explorer, author David Sibray 1.19.22) The next stop is the Frametown trailhead 6.2 miles upriver.

Just sayin’ in case you need to refuel…Granny’s Kitchen and Sam’s Grocery are a short hop off the trail. The next stop is the Coastal Lumber/ Stumbo Road trailhead, a short 2.3 miles upriver.

The fine gravel is now being laid from Coastal Lumber to Gassaway, and completion is expected very soon – maybe even by August 1, so do not ride this section upriver until the fine gravel is down or you will have a bumpy ride, FYI. There is only one more stop 6.8 miles away, the Gassaway Trailhead.
Gassaway Trailhead
Gassaway is the northern end of the trail, where the newest segment is expected to be completed this month. The gravel has been applied and the work on the grounds at the historic Gassaway Depot and Trailhead is being finalized for a grand opening. There is a large parking area at the depot. Trail riders can easily walk one block into the charming town of Gassaway and visit the shops and eateries on Main Street and surrounding areas. (Fun Fact: Gassaway is the home of Go-Mart!). You can also find airBNBs and campgrounds in this area.
So congratulations! You just rode along with us and completed the 3.2-mile trek from Clendenin North to Queen Shoals, and then, if your “seat” could handle it, you traveled 45 more uninterrupted trail miles from Hartland to Gassaway! Start at a skill level that is best for you. Before you know it, you can increase your distance and enjoy a healthy cardio workout and it won’t even feel like exercise! Grab your tennis shoes or your bike (or your horse), and enjoy the gorgeous scenery along the trail soon!

W
hen you grow up on the Elk River, you never take for granted the camaraderie of classmates and friends. A better choice of words to describe them would be extended family. No one exemplifies this more than Matt Holbert and his wife Nikki. “This town gave me my roots,” said Matt, who is a Clendenin native. “I would be remiss if I failed to give back when the Town needed me.” For over two years, a faded For Sale sign was halftaped on the window of the Farmers & Citizens Bank (F&C) building, a historic Clendenin landmark established in 1923. The previous occupant, Chase Bank, left town after The Flood of 2016. There were many discussions among the locals as to what could go in there and who would buy it. At a time when the Town was devastated and everyone was trying to recover from the massive flood destruction, it seemed as though no one could step forward to purchase the building. That is, until two years later in 2018, when Matt and Nikki Holbert purchased the building.
He and Nikki choose to define their own karma. “I believe it is important to invest in businesses that benefit the community,” said Matt. “This town matters, these town people matter, it’s my hometown. Sometimes you just know it’s up to you to believe, step up, and take a leap of faith. What better place to do it than in our Elk River community.” Nikki added, “It’s so nice to bring life back into the F&C building and be a part of the revitalization of the Town.”
Matt said, “The stately F&C building is not only majestic, but it has an amazing view of the Elk River. The town of Clendenin was slated to be one of the new trail towns for the Elk River Trail, coupled with two local kayak access points in north and south Clendenin. Nikki and I had a vision. This vision would not only offer rebirth for the F&C building, but for the Town as well.”

The Holberts are no strangers to knowing what it takes to have successful businesses. They own the popular Bricks and Barrels restaurant, The Lucky Dill, Uncork and Create, and Axes and Ales in Charleston. “This purchase, however, had a deeper, more personal meaning,” said Matt. He grew up at the mouth of Doctors Creek just outside of Clendenin's city limits. He is the oldest son of David and Linda Holbert and has two younger siblings, Jason and Anita (King). He graduated from Herbert Hoover in 1991 and went on to obtain a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering at WVU Institute of Technology and a master’s degree in telecommunication from George Washington University.

What else Is brewing in Clendenin? Duh, a brewery! Stage two of the F&C bank building restoration culminated at the end of June this year! The Clendenin Brewing Company officially celebrated its grand opening on June 25 as The Mark Miller Band performed on stage, vendors lined Main Street, and the town was full of friends, families, and county/ state celebrities. Dave Knight, local entrepreneur, Clendenin Town Councilman, and good friend said “This is an exciting day for everyone. I encouraged (well, gently pushed) the Holberts to buy the building. I knew they were the right choice and today I couldn’t be prouder of them.”

The first two years after their F&C purchase involved a lot of sweat equity as the Holberts remodeled and transformed the second floor of the building into four Take Me Home Airbnb rooms which opened last year. Four additional rooms will be completed by next summer which will be a total of eight rentable bedrooms that share a spacious living room for relaxing and visiting with friends plus a breakfast area. There are plenty of books and games plus a television for guests who want to use the common area after a fun day on the rail or water trails. Matt said, “We have had guests from over 40 states and many others from our West Virginia counties as well.”

The Holberts preserved all of the original doors, door handles, and locks. It was Nikki’s idea to also recondition the old claw foot bathtub which is painted a gorgeous yellow coupled with candles surrounding it to create the perfect ambiance. They also named one of the bedrooms after Dr. O. M. Harper, who had his office upstairs and practiced in the Town for many years. This unit has a river view and a view of the new stage that was just constructed at the end of Clendenin’s Main Street. It is expected to be an extremely popular unit when the town hosts concerts and events. You can find all of their listings on airbnb.com; just choose Clendenin, WV as your location.
The Holberts said, “Even though there is still a lot of work to do, our doors are officially open!” The first floor of the F&C is now divided into two sections. The main floor offers seating as well as a large bar and to the left is the new brewery. The old bank vault is prominently featured when you walk in the door. It is a great conversation starter for all their patrons. The Holberts also have an area between the seating area and the brewery so that visitors can see the beer being brewed.

Under the progressive leadership of Mayor Kay Summers, the town is working together and prospering. The talented brewmaster is Matt’s friend, Tom Dawson, from the Tidewater Virginia area. “We’ve worked together as engineers for years and we both have entrepreneurial spirits. What I love about The Clendenin Brewing Co. is it is just what we envisioned: a place where locals, families, and visitors can gather together, meet up with old friends and make new friends, not to mention share a great beverage!,” he said. Tom said their vision from the beginning was to have a family-friendly,
social-gathering atmosphere, not a bar. “We are seeing a lot of families stopping in, enjoying bingo and throwing a few soft axes at the target hanging on the wall. Laughter and conversation fill the air-it’s all coming to fruition.” Matt said, “Clendenin is an awesome little town where you can just come and get away from it all.” It’s a short drive from Charleston. Bring your bike (you can also rent one from Yak House Rentals) or just enjoy an evening walk on the trail or maybe sit on the new stage and take in the view of the peaceful Elk River. In fact, the Glennie Burford sign still hangs above the archway where you will be able to enter the future dining room at Par Mar. Larry added grilled sandwiches to their menu also, including his popular Reubens, Chili Cheese Fries, Hot Dogs, and of course everyone’s favorite, Blue Creek Special, which was a delicious combination of ham, hot peppers, onion and tomatoes on grilled bread. Breakfast was also available anytime; in fact there
was a group called the Breakfast Club that showed up every Saturday morning. Larry was married to Vivian Samples Maynor and they have two daughters, Jill Maynor Grandchamp and Jodi Maynor Grimm. He owned the Marathon/ Maynor’s Sandwich Shop until he passed away in 2001. W.J., Bernard, and Larry will always be legends on the Elk River.

The HHHS Golf team made an incredible showing at the threeday tournament at the National High School Golf Invitational at Pinehurst, NC. The team finished 39th out of 53 teams!! Bryson Beaver finished at +4 and tied for 17th overall out of 333 golfers. West Virginia was represented at Pinehurst by the three WV State Champion teams, AAA George Washington, AA Herbert Hoover, and A St. Mary’s. Hoover finished 39th among the 53 teams with a score of +155; George Washington finished 40th with
a +161, and St. Mary’s finished 44th with a +213. Hoover battled strong on day one but finished 41st, with a score of 349 under George Washington who finished 33rd with a score of 336. On day two, however, Bryson Beaver shot a strong round of 1 under par 71 which left them only five strokes behind George Washington. Bryson Beaver (with a 74) and Max Bowen (with a 75) were solid on day three to help Hoover take the lead past George Washington, finishing 39th over George Wasington’s 40th place. Coach Eddie Gray said, “July 13, 2022 was the end of the greatest golf season in Herbert Hoover High School history. At Pinehurst, not only did these
guys fight through 3 tough courses in 90 degree weather, they had the experience of a lifetime. It started with Max winning the team Par 3 with a -1 and ended with Bryson finishing 17th overall and the Team finishing 39th out of 52 teams and 1st Place among the three West Virginia teams that participated. Think about this, there are over 120,000+ high school golfers in the USA and 333 participated at Pinehurst. So yes, this group is special. They are 5 of the best golfers in the Nation. To say I am proud of them is an understatement. What a year this has been. I can’t wait ‘til August 1st to see what this next year's season will bring.”

Delegate Dean Jeffries and his daughter stopped by the grand opening of the new store and joined 96.1 WKWS in the celebration. The new Par Mar is located at 5114 Elk River Road in Elkview. They offer a wide selection of convenience foods and snacks in addition to gas, kerosene, off-road diesel and REC90.

Manager Holly Keliher said, “Maynor’s Market and Sandwich Shop was a landmark on the Elk River, and in addition to Par Mar offering a wide selection of hot stuffed pizza, wings, pepperoni rolls, burgers, hot dogs, garlic bread, chicken tenders, mozzarella sticks, breakfast sandwiches, and more, they will also soon be offering The Blue Creek Special sandwich.” The Blue Creek Special will have the traditional ham, banana peppers and cheese combination which Larry Maynor was famous for serving. It was always, and still will be, a local favorite.
In the coming months Par Mar will also be opening up the old dining area which was a popular Elk River ‘meeting place’.. The dining area will have limited eat-in seating, but it will offer a delicious carry-out menu including, of course, the Blue Creek Special.
A Second Par Mar Opens in our Community Par Mar also opened a new location just outside Clendenin on I-79, right off of the Amma exit. The new Par Mar is located at 3442 Amma Road in Amma (formerly O’Dell’s Exxon). The grand celebration was held on July 8 and Rock 105 was there to welcome them to the community. Congratulations to Linda Drennen of Amma who won a $100 Par Mar gift card. Par Mar has a full freezer and dairy section, so it is also a great option for picking up some grocery basics when you are heading home from work. Also don’t forget to pick up a delicious pizza for an easy dinner! They are open daily, 6 AM to 11 PM.

When You Are Sidelined With an Ankle Injury

an x-ray? The general rule is if it’s painful to touch the bony areas of the ankle and impossible to take four steps within a half hour of the injury then it’s best to seek medical attention. However, according to multiple studies by sports medicine physicians, less than 15% of ankles without deformity x-rayed in emergency rooms were fractured. This means it’s ok to not panic and rush to the ER as soon as you see some swelling. Refer to the RICE method of rest, ice, compression, and elevation for acute ankle sprains. Simply icing and elevating for 15-20 minutes after the injury can improve your recovery time.
When you’re an athlete participating in sports, you might find yourself on the sidelines due to

an injury. One of the most common injuries in athletics is an ankle sprain. Your ankle is known as a hinge joint, and it’s flexible. This allows you to move your foot in many ways, jump, and pivot. Because of the flexibility of your ankle joint, it’s prone to injury. There are actually several different ligaments that can be sprained and can make each injury unique. Mostly, the treatment and prevention programs are the same for the whole ankle.

Usually no matter how the ankle was injured, the symptoms are very similar. You may notice swelling, pain, bruising, and stiffness of the ankle joint. It may even be hard to put weight on the injured leg while standing or walking. How do you know if you need
Ankle sprains are no walk in the park, so knowing ways to prevent them is important too. One of the most important ways to prevent an ankle sprain is to wear the right kind of shoes. Some athletic shoes may look really cool but have horrible foot and ankle support when you need to be able to run and cut corners quickly. Always wear shoes with laces when doing athletic activities. Doing simple exercises like lunges, wall squats, or calf raises daily can improve balance and strength so that when you do step on an uneven surface you are able to keep your ankle from rolling. Elk Valley Physical Therapy offers free injury screens for area athletes and provides athletic training coverage for Herbert Hoover athletics. When an athlete is injured they can skip the long waits at the emergency room, be evaluated, and begin the road to recovery faster for free for up to three visits.
