HELLO & Welcome Back! I’m not big on new year’s resolutions, but I will admit I have given thought to what I would like to spend extra time doing in 2022. It seems like there is never enough time, and if there is one thing I have learned, it is this: if you don’t make time, there won’t be enough time. I think everyone needs to make time to do what makes them happy (ier). Jill Moles Mullins, Elk River award-winning photographer, loves being outdoors to capture amazing shots of landscapes and wildlife. Her passion is depicted in her photos which are featured this month in ERL, and just looking at them relays a message of peace and tranquility. Elk River Hotel and Cafe in Sutton, this month’s ERL cover story, has been fully renovated “as one of the first of many planned “Glamp Out” Resorts where tourists can step into nature for truly unique and unforgettable travel experiences.” Again, taking time, making much needed time, to unwind and relax. There is also our Elk Reflects article this month where photographer Rebecca Kiger accompanied by Dr. Sherri Young, Director of the Kanawha-Charleston Health Department, traveled and took photos to complement a TIME magazine story on Kanawha County's successful response to the COVID-19 pandemic. They visited Dana Campbell, age 94, who was homebound at the time but as a result of their visit, he was able to receive his COVID vaccination. Before they left, Dana wanted to thank them by playing a song on his harmonica, and he chose to play one of his granddaughter Lauren’s favorite songs, You are My Sunshine. It was later that Kiger’s photo was selected and featured as one of TIME’s 2021 Top 100 Photos. These special women took time to visit with him and he repaid them with a cherished memory they will never forget. Taking extra time to make yourself happier has a ripple effect on those around you. A warm smile begets a smile, a laugh triggers a reciprocal laugh, and the love you extend comes back to you two-fold. In 2022, let us all remember to take the time to be happier, with ourselves and with others. May our hearts dictate our actions and may this world be a better place because we took the time. Much love to you all.

On Many a Vase and Jar: Orientalism in Ballet with Phil Chan

he West Virginia University Humanities Center is sponsoring a new Speakers Series event this month on the WVU Humanities Center YouTube channel and you can attend virtually.

On Monday, January 24th @ 7:00 PM via Zoom, the WVU Humanities Center invites you to attend “On Many a Vase and Jar: Orientalism in Ballet” with Phil Chan.

Description of the Event: “The brilliant Chan takes us on a magic carpet ride through a history of orientalism in ballet, and explains why preserving a Eurocentric view of “exotic” people and places on our stages isn’t doing us any favors with the diversity conversation. How do we get more comfortable talking about race and tradition? Through challenging assumptions and exposing contradictions, Phil Chan presents challenges and provocations about how we mediate and navigate new ways of thinking and ‘being’ against socio-historical positions and beliefs, and how to make ballet truly for everyone.” – Eventbrite and Royal Academy of Dance, Organizer of On Many a Vase and Jar: Orientalism in Ballet CPD Interactive Webinar

Phil Chan is a co-founder of Final Bow for Yellowface, and most recently served as the Director of Programming for IVY, connecting young professionals with leading American museums and performing arts institutions. He is a graduate of Carleton College and an alumnus of the Ailey School. As a writer, he served as the Executive Editor for FLATT Magazine and contributed to Dance Europe Magazine, Dance Magazine, Dance Business Weekly, and the Huffington Post. He was the founding General Manager of the Buck Hill Skytop Music Festival, and was the General Manager for Armitage Gone! Dance. He served multiple years on the National Endowment for the Arts dance panel and the Jadin Wong Award panel presented by the Asian American Arts Alliance. He serves on the International Council for the Parsons Dance Company, and the Advisory Board of Dance Magazine. He is the author of Final Bow for Yellowface: Dancing between Intention and Impact, and was a 2020 New York Public Library Dance Research Fellow.

his month we are featuring two delicious winter beverages guaranteed to help warm you up during the cold winter months! The first one is Christmas Eve Creamy Crock Pot Hot Chocolate by Gabi Walker on her Walker Mtn. Eats/Facebook. I have to tell you it is exactly as she says, “easy and super delicious”. The second one is Sharon Holcomb’s Russian Tea. I have had that recipe for years and it remains one of my all-time favorites. Try one or try both…either are sure to be saved in your recipe files to make again and again for years to come. Add one cozy afghan, a good book, and let it snow, let it snow, let it snow.

CHRISTMAS EVE CREAMY CROCK POT HOT CHOCOLATE

INGREDIENTS

DIRECTIONS

•

1 ½ cups heavy whipping cream

Step 1:

•

1 can of sweetened condensed milk (14 oz.)

•

2 cups milk chocolate chips

– Combine all ingredients in a crock pot.

•

6 cups of milk

•

1 t. vanilla extract

Step 2: – Simmer for two hours on low, stirring occasionally.

SERVES 4–6

SHARON HOLCOMB'S RUSSIAN TEA INGREDIENTS

DIRECTIONS

•

8 C cold water

Step 1:

•

2 C sugar

– Bring 8 C cold water and sugar to a boil in a large pot.

•

1 cinnamon stick

Step 2:

•

1 t. whole cloves

•

1 t. allspice

•

8 C water

•

8 tea bags (like Lipton)

– Wrap the cinnamon stick, whole cloves and allspice in cheesecloth and drop into the boiling sugar water (from Step 1). Turn heat to med/hi and let simmer for 15-20 minutes. The water will turn brown and smell delicious.

2 C pineapple juice

Step 3:

2 C orange juice

•

½ C lemon juice

– In a smaller pot, boil 8 C water, add tea bags, turn off heat, and let tea steep for 15-20 minutes while the above spices are simmering. Remove tea bags. Step 4:

Gabi’s Note: This does well by freezing the leftovers in pint size baggies and then just reheating for a delicious warm drink.

– Add the tea mixture (from Step 3) to the spice water (from Step 2). Stir in the pineapple, orange and lemon juices. – Stir until thoroughly combined and warm. Remove cheesecloth of spices. This tea can be served from a crockpot, heat-proof carafe, or heat-proof drink/coffee dispenser.

Jill said, “This is such a huge honor and I want to thank everyone who voted for me.” She also gave a shout out and a big congratulations to her friend and Executive Director of the Beckley Art Center, Robby Moore, who won Best Artist. “He works tirelessly for all artists in West Virginia,” she said; “he is truly deserving of the Best Artist award.”

Jill’s black and white picture, Team Power, also recently won the People’s Choice Award in the Dan and Cynthia Bickley Fine Art Gallery Black and White Show at the Beckley Art Center. It is a stunning and powerful photo of a train engine at Cass Railroad.

Also, Watoga State Park, Calvin Price State Forest, and Droop Mountain Battlefield State Park have received International Dark Sky Designation and they chose one of Jill’s photos, Droop Mountain, to make the official announcement. Jill said, “The International Dark Sky Association works to protect the night skies for the present and future generations.” The next gallery show at Tamarack, titled Tamarack HISTORY OF…, begins January 8 through February 19, 2022. It

will be Tamarack’s first exhibition of 2022 and “will be visually exploring history and sharing past events with Tamarack Marketplace’s visitors and guests. The featured work can explore the history of West Virginia, history of the United States, family histories or even international historical happenings.(from Facebook/ Tamarack Marketplace).” Jill’s pictures that will be exhibited at HISTORY OF… are Reflection, Steam at Sunset, Abandoned Henry Ford Railroad Line, Droop Mountain, Glade Creek Grist Mill, and Steam Power. Announcing the New Elk River Loft Event Venue

he top floor of Main Street Tees & More has been transformed into a lovely event venue, the Elk River Loft. If you are looking for the perfect gathering place, this is it, whether you are looking for a location for holiday dinners, parties, showers, office events, weddings or more.

One of The Loft’s newest features is a 200” projector screen. Shay said, “The projector is perfect to display little clips during receptions, dinners or for hosting a movie night or parties. You are able to project images right from your smartphone. The projector screen is free to use with a booking. In 2022, Shay said they will be offering a bridal dressing room if the bride hosts their full event at The Loft. “The tables can be moved behind the curtains for the wedding ceremony and then brought out for the reception,” said Shay. “There are multiple airbnb’s in Clendenin that are perfect for the bride, bridal party and out of town guests.” Also coming in 2022, the Elk River Loft will have a new kitchen area, approximately 15 ft. across the back of the venue. “We are enclosing steps and

extending this space to add a full kitchen to our venue,” said Shay. Shay said, “Our landlord, Susan Jack, wanted to bring more business to Clendenin. We didn’t want to take away from existing businesses in town, so our new Elk River Loft is a perfect match to help us all grow!” Shay explained that she recommends local eateries for catering and airbnb’s for overnight stays when customers reserve the Elk River Loft. Also, we can recommend local microblading and hair design venues. The Elk River Loft is available for full weekdays or weekends from 8 AM to 11 PM. There is an order form on their Facebook/Elk River Event Venue and on their website https://www.book-the-loft.com. They require a $50 deposit at the time of reservation and the balance of $100 paid on the day of the event. This includes the use of the eight 8 ft. tables, chairs and chair covers with sashes, food table with heated serving pans, projector, and decorations if needed. ELKVIEW MAN’S PORTRAIT INCLUDED IN TIME’S 2021 TOP 100 PHOTOS By Lauren Elizabeth Campbell, ERL Contributing Author and Editor-in-Chief of Rock & Roamer magazine My late grandfather, Dana Campbell, was a plain and simple man, but if someone told me ten years ago his photo would end up on TIME's 2021 Top 100 Photos - I wouldn't have been surprised. He was always at the right place at the right time, whether it came to catching a fish in the Elk River or getting his hair cut next to Edgar Bergen on a trip to Hollywood, CA. On June 4, my mother, Anna, exclaimed, "Someone is outside taking photos of our house!" Alarmed at why someone would be outside taking photos, we immediately rushed out the door. Outside was independent documentary photographer Rebecca Kiger, from Wheeling, with Dr. Sherri Young, the Executive Director of the Kanawha-Charleston Health Department. Young quickly explained she had been making home visits to administer the COVID vaccine to people unable to travel, and next on her list was my bed-bound grandfather. Kiger was accompanying her, taking photos to complement a TIME magazine story on Kanawha County's successful response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

My mother escorted Young and Captain Doug Beasley from the sheriff’s department to my grandparent's house next door while Kiger documented everything. Observing her work, I learned the secret to being a great documentary photographer was to be exceedingly present and observational. Kiger noticed all movements in the house and took photos of everything, from my mother walking Young to my grandparents' house to a framed print of my grandparents on their wedding day.

When Young walked into my grandfather's room, his eyes lit up, excited to see someone different, as he hadn't had many visitors due to COVID-19. It was inspiring to watch Young engage with my 94-year-old grandfather and even more inspiring to watch her give him the vaccine that allowed him to have future visitors.

The article on Young and the Kanawha-Charleston Health Department was published in TIME last July, but we were surprised again at the end of November. Kiger's photo of an Elkview man playing his harmonica was selected for TIME's 2021 Top 100 Photos, a selection of 100 pictures that TIME believes best represents the year. My grandfather was positioned between President Joe Biden at Dover Air Force Base in Delaware during the dignified transfer of the remains of American service members who were killed in the suicide bombing in Kabul and a photo of Zaila Avant-garde, the first Black American to win the Scripps National Spelling Bee. While it is neat to see my grandfather included on TIME's 2021 Top 100 Photos, the inclusion of his portrait on the list isn't really about him or my family, but two inspiring West Virginia women. Young, who was courageous and successful in fighting a global pandemic and gracious enough to deliver vaccines to home-bound individuals, and Kiger in telling the story of Kanawha County's successful COVID fight.

After his shot, in typical Dana fashion, my grandfather wished to play Young a song on his harmonica to thank her before she left. He asked me what tune he should play, and I offered my usual suggestion, "You Are My Sunshine." And then we watched Kiger take that photo.

ELK’S JOURNAL ACE BOGGESS Interview with Ace Boggess by Keegan Lester, ERL guest author and acclaimed American writer with WV roots

Ace Boggess is a tremendous poet from Charleston, West Virginia, who has also lived in Huntington, Martinsburg, Morgantown, Huntington again, and the West Virginia prison system (Martinsburg and Welch). I’ve been following him for years. His poems gravitate around his incarceration, music, and day-to-day life. He is the author of two novels and six books of poetry: Most recently: Escape Envy. His writing has been published in Harvard Review, Notre Dame Review, Rattle, River Styx, Mid-American Review, and Southern Humanities Review and he has received a fellowship for fiction from the West Virginia Commission on the Arts. Ace describes his poetry as “a mix of scrapbook, photo album, and autobiography. I write about everything,” he says. “Anything is worth writing about, as long as I can approach it with a mix of childlike fascination and a journalist’s eye. New experiences, however horrible, resonate with their own kind of beauty. And when I experience something, I have the urge to share it, not only to tell the story but to do it in such a way that other people can understand it without having to live through it.”

There have been a handful of people who have recently made their careers writing about the opioid epidemic, but very few of them have experience using firsthand or have been incarcerated. This prompted me to ask Ace: What do people get wrong about it in their writing about the epidemic?

“I get asked versions of this a lot, and my answer is not a popular one. There won’t be more addicts if drugs are legalized (all drugs, without exception), but there will be less crime, less cost to society, and a better chance

that addicts will seek help. That’s not what people want to hear, but it’s the truth. As for the people involved, well, we all have other underlying problems that we’re dealing with. For me, it was (and is) social anxiety and feelings of failure and self-doubt. If you get someone off drugs without dealing in some way with those underlying problems, it won’t end well.”

I’d like to think that I write for the people who aren’t there with me. Social anxiety has forced me to spend much of my life hiding out away from other people. So, I write as my way of saying, ‘Hey, this is me, now tell me about you. – Ace Boggess

When asking Boggess about some of his favorite moments in his career, he says “Getting the acceptance letter for my book The Prisoners on the day I made it out of prison … that was a big one. Readings, though, are what I love. I enjoy giving readings more than anything else. They are the only times I ever feel completely at home. Before prison, I was reading in York, Pennsylvania, and after, I stood outside smoking a cigarette, when a young woman came up to me and said, ‘Thanks for being interesting,’ which I still take as the greatest compliment I have ever received.”

Important advice Ace offers up to aspiring writers is as follows: 1. Don’t ever let anyone tell you that you can’t do it. 2. Listen to all advice that comes your way, but learn to tell what’s good advice and what’s not, because you’ll get both, often. 3. Find what works best for you, not just in what you write, but in how you write (longhand, computer, voice recorder, on a cell phone, whatever) and when (different times of day can produce different psychological states that lead to different kinds of writing.

The universal commonality that all poets seem to share is how they become a poet. It’s almost never that one decides, unprompted, by themselves one day, that this will be their vocation. It is often brought on by another. “Originally, I didn’t consider myself a poet. I always called myself a novelist and immersed myself in writing novels for years, just dashing out poems on the side along the way. But I had success with poetry even before prison, and so everyone I knew called me a poet. I finally accepted that in prison, and now it is my driving occupation. Without it, I probably would’ve given up. My whole way of viewing the world has changed to accommodate that.”

Trae Stout Makes Pro Boxing Debut Submitted by Rob Fletcher, Owner of Elk River Boxing Club

Local Elk River amateur boxing standout, Christopher “Trae” Stout, will make his pro boxing debut at The Roane County Rumble on January 22, 2022. The event will be held at the Roane County High School in Spencer. Trae’s opponent at the Roane County Rumble will be Jordan Zlacki from Pittsburgh, PA. Trae is a 2015 graduate from Braxton County High School. He started learning how to box from his long time family friend, Earl Tanner of Clay, WV. Trae attended Glenville State College where he joined the Glenville State College Boxing Team under the direction of Coach Duane Chapman. While he was at Glenville, he won the first Hometown Heroes Boxing (HHB) National Boxing Tournament in January of 2018. After attending Glenville, Trae joined the Elk River Boxing Club in Elkview under the tutelage of Coach Rob Fletcher where he has won multiple boxing titles. Rob is the owner and boxing instructor at Elk River Boxing Club and is a former heavy-weight boxing champion. Trae said, “My first goal is to win the WV Light Middleweight title. I’m not overlooking the opponents I have to defeat first in order to reach this goal.”

GOLF

The EVCS golf team completed a successful program after bringing back the program in 2020. Coached by Principal Mike Wilson and Assistant Pastor Tommy Bartlett, the Eagles had 14 golfers on this year’s roster and will only be losing two seniors going into 2022, Isaac Paugh and Caleb Edwards. With 12 returning players, including 3 of the 4 regular starters, the future of EVCS golf is bright. Others who saw significant varsity action in 2021 included Evan Chapman, Kyle Adkins, Jake Leadmon, and Emily Edwards, with several younger and beginning golfers getting to play in competition for the first time. The Elk Valley Christian School volleyball team kept their winning tradition going this fall with an overall record 17-7. This included 3rd place finishes in both the West Virginia Christian Athletic Tournament (WVCAT) and West Virginia Christian Education Association (WVCEA) state tournament. The Eagles also won a large tournament in Parkersburg.

Juniors Carlee Burdette and Kaitlyn Swor were named to both the Alltournament and All state teams. In addition to Burdette and Swor, the remainder of the team consisted of Kailin Legg, Leah Syner, Kaylee Graham, Emily Edwards, Maddy Swor, and Madee Jones. The team had no seniors in 2021, so there are big expectations for Coach Eddie Fisher and the Eagles in 2022.

With Whitehair being the only senior, Eagle cross country expects to only improve going forward. There were also some middle schoolers who participated and there are plans to participate in middle school events in the future. In addition, Elk Valley’s new program has peaked interest with other Christian schools around the state and many have begun discussions to launch programs in 2022. Elk Valley also made history with their first cross country team. This is also one of the first Christian school cross country programs in West Virginia. Coached by Jennifer Burdette, varsity runners were Alaina Moles, Zayden Whitehair, Jon Burgess, Jared Crum and Cameron Knapp. As there were no other Christian schools participating in cross country, Eagle runners participated in 4 public school events and held their own, usually finishing in the middle of the pack. Jon Burgess and Alaina Moles ended the season with their best times and both medaled in the last meet.

AA WV ALL FOOTBALL TEAM Congrats to the nine HHHS Huskies who were named to the AA WV All Football Team! This is a school record for HHHS players being named to the team. Devin Hatfield becomes the third in school history to be named captain of an All-State Team, behind Joe Mullins (1990) and DJ Taylor (2005). We are so proud of you! First Team: Devin Hatfield, Defensive Captain; Levi Paxton, and Isaiah Chapman. Second Team: Nathan Harper and Dane Hatfield. Reducing the Risk of Falls

She is a 1996 honors graduate with a Bachelor’s degree in sports medicine from University of Charleston and she graduated from WVU with a Masters in Physical Therapy. She is a proud HHHS alumnus and is very active in Elk River athletics and youth programs. As winter quickly approaches the risk of falls for older adults increases greatly with the addition of ice and snow to many walking surfaces. One in four people aged 65 and older will have a fall this year. More than 3 million older adults are treated in emergency departments for nonfatal fall injuries each year, with 20% of those being a serious injury, such as a head trauma, or a fracture. Sadly, most adults who have had a fall or issues with balancing will never mention it

to their healthcare provider and will further increase their chance of injury. There are many ways a person may help themselves or a loved one prevent falls. The first step is to contact a medical provider right away if you fall, worry about falling, or feel unsteady. Have your doctor or pharmacist review all the medicines you take, even over-the-counter medicines because they may be causing dizziness or making you sleepy which will increase the chance of falling. Also mention to your medical provider if you are having issues with your vision or feelings of numbness or tingling in your legs and feet that may be causing issues with walking steadily. Lack of exercise also leads to weakness and increases your chances of falling. Exercises that improve balance and make your legs stronger lower your chances of falling. It also helps you feel better and more confident. A physical therapist can also assist you with decreasing your risk of falls by offering home modification tips such as: removing slick rugs, adding a no-slip bath mat to your shower, or the correct shoes to wear. Many insurances have direct access plans where you can contact your local physical therapy clinic for an appointment without a referral and be on your way to improving your mobility.
