& Welcome Back!

all evokes a new set of emotions for me. I always enjoy the drop in humidity and temperature which makes it more enjoyable to be outdoors. I love the trees starting to turn, especially here in West Virginia. There is nothing like the pop of red, orange, burgundy, and yellow painting our landscape. The drive along Route 119 to Summersville Lake is outstanding when the leaves are at their peak. I encourage you to just take a drive this fall and enjoy the view. I tend to shift my energies more to taking time to breathe in the crisp fall air and to enjoy fall festivals, football games, and events. Even though COVID has affected some of our fall festivals, it’s still a good time to visit businesses and pick up a pot of mums, some corn shocks tied with a festive bow, a bag of golden delicious apples, a pumpkin-flavored beverage or food, and a couple of pumpkins to carve with the family for Halloween. Speaking of Halloween, this month ERL was proud to feature the Haymond Haunted House in Sutton, another good family-fun October event. Also, we would like to send a special thank you to Andi Naylor Geary at Elk Valley Physical Therapy and Randy Young at Affiliated Financial Group for organizing and bringing area businesses together to have fantastic trunk-or-treats for our children. Businesses supporting business, buy local, shop local...all of these are not just slogans...it is more of the way we were raised here on the Elk River. We take care of one another. In this time of health, political, and economic unrest, I think it is important for us to remember to be kind. We are a blessed community; not every community is like our Elk River. This month before the hustle-bustle of the upcoming holidays, reflect on who we are and what truly matters. We are Elk River Caring and Strong.

Eats/Facebook shared her delicious recipe for Cheddar Bacon Ranch Trash Bread. She said, “We were fighting each other off for more helpings--it’s that kind of YUM! We all loved this and it made a perfect side dish with our grilled flank steak dinner salad and it would make a great appetizer for a game day party or a dinner party.”

1 C Monterey Jack cheese, shredded

1 C Sharp Cheddar cheese, shredded

•

1 T parsley

•

¾ C Real Bacon bits

• •

2 green onions (white parts thinly sliced for the cheese mixture and save the green parts thinly sliced for garnish) 1 Round Artisan or Sourdough bread loaf

•

1 stick butter, melted

•

3 T Dry Ranch dressing mix, divided

DIRECTIONS Preheat oven to 375 degrees Step 1:

Put the Monterey Jack, Cheddar, parsley, bacon, 1 tablespoon of the dry, ranch-dressing mix, and the thinly sliced onion whites in a bowl and mix well.

Gently stuff the cheese mixture in between the rows of the squares. Mix the melted butter and 2 T of the dry ranch-dressing mix and then drizzle over the top of the cheese-stuffed bread.

Step 2:

Cut the bread in strips in one direction, being careful not to cut all the way through the loaf. Rotate the bread 90 degrees and cut in the other direction to create small squares across the top of the loaf. Move slowly and use caution. Place the bread on a large sheet of aluminum foil on a sheet pan.

Step 4: Wrap the loaf in the foil and bake for 25 minutes. Open the foil and continue to bake until heated through and the cheese is melted and bubbly, usually another 1015 minutes. Sprinkle with the reserved thinly sliced onion greens and serve hot.

eople gathered from all across West Virginia on Main Street in Clendenin on September 10 to honor the birthplace of Union Carbide, an American chemical corporation now wholly owned by Dow Chemical Company. Clendenin was honored by the inclusion on the National Chemical Society’s Historical Landmark list maintained by the American Chemical Society - the first town in West Virginia ever to receive this honor. Clendenin Mayor Kay Summers, the Speaker of the West Virginia House of Delegates Roger Hanshaw, representatives for United States Senators Shelley Moore Capito and Joe Manchin, Dow Site Leader Shannon Huber, and West Virginia State University Chemistry Department Chair Dr. Michael Fultz spoke of the impact the Elk River has made to the petrochemical industry that has gone on to change the world. American Chemical Society National President Dr. H. N. Cheng joined the event virtually.

"The town of Clendenin was laying the foundation for the multibillion-dollar petrochemical industry that affects virtually every aspect of modern-day life," said Summers. "This is the third generation of Carbiders, and we have some people here tonight that their grandfather started this plant in 1920. So that is huge, and I'm so proud of that."

The Elk River's deposits of brine, coal, gas, timber, oil, and water attracted industrial entrepreneurs to the area, and in 1920 the world's first petrochemical plant was built. Major corporate products first produced at the plant include ethylene oxide/glycol, alcohols, olefins, and polyethylene.

Hanshaw drives through Clendenin to work every day and says he plans to take more time to appreciate and remember the contributions people along the Elk River have made to change the world.

"It's very easy for me to often overlook the contribution that Clendenin and the people of this community, and this Elk River, and Kanawha River Valley made to changing the world, literally shaping the world in which we live, it's easy to take that for granted," said Hanshaw. Hanshaw, who credits himself having a Ph.D. in chemistry because he was inspired by the Carbiders he knew, encouraged attendees to remember these contributions with him.

"Look at all the materials around us, look at all of the things in the cars we drive, the packages that contain our food, all of the things that make up all of the products that we take for granted every day, and never realize that those things are possible because 100 years ago, smart people in Clendenin found a way to take very simple molecules, very simple things that exist in our world around us, and turn them into something that would change our world. And they did that right here in Clendenin, not in Chicago, not in Los Angeles, not Washington, DC, not in London, but Clendenin. They did it here," said Hanshaw.

The plaque will temporarily be placed beside the "Welcome to Clendenin" sign. The city is building a park on the site where the original Union Carbide building sat. Once the park is completed, the sign will be moved to honor the site's original location.

Looking toward the future of the petrochemical industry, West Virginia State University Vice President for University Advancement Patricia Schumann presented the Dr. George Oliver Curme, Jr. Scholarship, named for the chemist credited as "the father" of Union Carbide, to students studying STEM.

The Haymond House is one of the oldest buildings in Braxton County. It was built in 1894 by William Edgar Haymond, a prominent Braxton County prosecuting attorney, and it was included in the National Register of Historic Places in 2004. This elegant Queen Anne-style mansion boasts two and half stories with a huge front porch, indoor plumbing and toilets which were rare during that era, and the inside reportedly houses spirits from years past. Both of William’s wives, Emma and Ethel, died at the house and his granddaughter, age 8, was listed in the home at the time of her death. Additionally, there are reports of a child drowning in the river directly in front of the Haymond House. Owners Teresa and Greg Frame of Sutton originally bought the Haymond House in 2018 with a vision of turning it into a historical Bed and Breakfast. Teresa said her husband was the first to observe

a strange energy in the house. He was in the basement working on the hot water tank and he saw what appeared to be a flickering oval-shaped orb, approximately 4-5 inches long. At first he thought it was a light coming in from the outside somehow, but then it disappeared. She said another sighting in the basement before they bought the house was by a gentleman who reported seeing a small boy hunkered down behind the steps. Teresa said the house is very active with paranormal energy, during the day and the night. She said, “We

Twice in the green room upstairs, there have even been reports of a four-foot-high gray fog that moved from the bathroom to the fireplace.” Numerous paranormal groups and psychics have visited the Haymond House with EMF (electronic magnetic field) detectors. Teresa said the detectors will turn yellow, orange, green and red. On one visit, a paranormal group would ask questions upstairs such as “If this is Mr. Haymond, can you turn our detector to red?” and sure enough, the detector would respond to the requests they made. Also, the WV Paranormal Group stayed at the house for three days on several different occasions and recorded loud screams from a woman which was captured on video on four of the cameras they had set up in the house. Teresa said, “Psychics have felt the energy of a mentally-challenged spirit and also they have reported feeling that a death occurred in the servant stairwell, either by strangulation or by hanging.” Recently, Off Grid Paranormal and a psychic medium from NC stayed overnight in the house and reported seeing a ball of light. The psychic with them also said there is a hidden letter in the house that will give more insight into the haunted Haymond House.

The first Golden Delicious apple tree is said to have been planted by John Chapman, better known as "Johnny Appleseed," and bore fruit for a century before being blown down. However, the area still celebrates the West Virginia state fruit for the pride it has brought to the area and state. Renee Holcomb, President of the festival and a Clay County business owner for over 16 years, says she will be thrilled to welcome people back to the festival when it is safe to do so. "It has been a very long couple of years for everyone, and we believe they should be allowed to safely visit with friends and family and enjoy all the things we have worked diligently to provide," said Holcomb. The festival is known for its Apple Dash 5k, live bands, clogging contests, baking competitions, skillet flinging contests, its many local vendors, and the various apple-made sweets the festival serves to hungry attendees.

APPLE FRUIT SALAD INGREDIENTS • • • • • • • • • •

4 apples, diced 1 can pineapple, tidbits or diced 5-6 bananas, diced 1 pkg. instant vanilla pudding 1 pint fresh blueberries 1 can peaches, diced 1 can pears, diced 1 can fruit cocktail 3 T instant Tang breakfast drink 1 pint fresh strawberries, diced

DIRECTIONS – Mix all ingredients (including juices & diced fruit) – Let set until chilled

INGREDIENTS

1 lb. ground beef

– Preheat oven to 350 degrees

1 chopped onion

•

1 egg, beaten

– Combine meats, onion, bread crumbs, egg and seasonings.

¼ t pepper

– Shape into small balls; brown in shortening.

4 apples, cored and quartered

•

1 beef bouillon cube

– Remove from pan and place in casserole dish with diced quartered apples.

½ lb. pork sausage

•

½ cup dry bread crumbs

– Pour boiling water into pan that meats were browned in; add bouillon cube and stir.

1 t salt

– Pour over meat and apples.

•

1 T shortening

•

1 cup of boiling water.

– Cover and bake at 350 degrees for 45 minutes or until apples are tender.

GOLDEN DELICIOUS APPLE CAKE INGREDIENTS

DIRECTIONS

2 cups sugar

– Cream together sugar and butter.

½ cup butter

•

2 eggs

– Add eggs and beat. Sift together flour, baking soda, cinnamon, and salt.

1 t baking soda

1 t ground cinnamon

½ cup chopped nuts

4 cups raw chopped apples

•

½ cup raisins or dates

– Bring brown sugar, butter and cream to a boil and remove from heat.

– Add chopped nuts, chopped apples, and raisins or dates. – Mix well and pour into a greased, floured pan. – Bake for one hour.

HIKING AND EXERCISING ALONG THE ELK RIVER TRAIL The Apple Hike The 2021 Clay County Golden Delicious Apple Festival Hike was held on Sunday, September 19. It was a free event that started at 9 AM in Dundon on the Elk River Trail. The actual Clay County Golden Delicious Festival was canceled this year due to COVID precautions, but the hike was still able to be held adhering to social distancing guidelines. Rebecca Metzger, Elk River Trail Foundation (ERTF) committee member, said, “We had Elk River locals as well as participants from Nitro and Cross Lanes who were visiting the trail for the first time. It was a beautiful day for the hike and everyone had a great time.”

The hike covered 2.6 miles. Walkers and hikers leisurely traveled the trail from Dundon to the Pisgah Bridge and enjoyed the gorgeous Elk River terrain.

Work-Out Stations Along the Trail Rebecca said, “Everyone was encouraged to enjoy the five exercise stations that were recently installed along the Apple Hike route.” The WVU Clay Extension Service, The Center for Active WV, Be Healthy WV, and the CDC’s High Obesity Program purchased and installed the exercise equipment to promote increased physical activity and a healthier lifestyle. The first of the five stations is a push-up stand which offers one of the most basic and effective exercises for developing the shoulders and triceps. Another station has dual-exercise bars which helps build your triceps, deltoids, and biceps. Also, stretching and strength exercises can be performed on the bars including alternating leg swings, lunges, and deep knee bends. A set of parallel bars are also included in one of the exercise stations which provides an opportunity for dips, one of the most basic exercises for the development of arm and shoulder strength, building the pectorals, deltoids and for a variety of stretching exercises.

The Elk River Trail Foundation is looking forward to hosting more hiking, walking, and biking events. Ken Tawney, President of the ERTF said, “The trail is currently open, starting at the Hartland bridge, northward through Dundon and Ivydale to Duck near the Braxton County line. The trail is also rideable from Duck north to Frametown, although not officially open yet. The next section, currently under construction, runs from Queen Shoals to just below Clendenin. Work on connecting the trail from Queen Shoals through Elkhurst to Hartland will then begin.”

he month of October is known for celebrating ghosts and goblins with Halloween festivities. Braxton County also throws a monster in the mix, and celebrates The Flatwoods Monster Fest and Braxxie Bazaar, both ‘monsterly-great’ events. Even though the Monster Fest at Flatwoods was cancelled due to COVID precautions, the Braxxie Bazaar was held the weekend of September 10-11, adhering to social distancing guidelines.

This year marks the 69th anniversary of the Flatwoods Monster, also known to his friends as Braxxie. According to the legend, he was first seen on September 12, 1952 in Flatwoods. The annual Braxxie Bazaar was held in downtown Sutton, hosted by the Elk Theater, The Landmark Studio for the Arts, and The Flatwoods Monster Museum. It offered a full monster-and paranormal-agenda, including film screenings, guest speakers, and an array of vendors.

There was a kick-off screening of The Mothman Legacy for the Braxxie Bazaar on Friday, September 11 at the Elk Theater. More screenings were presented on Saturday, including the premiere of On the Trail of UFO’s: Dark Sky. Andrew Smith, Director of the Flatwoods Monster Museum and Braxton County Visitors Center, said, “The documentary film, On the Trail of UFO’s: Dark Sky, centers on the UFO phenomena of West Virginia by Small Town Monsters.”

He added, “On Saturday, the Elk Theater premiered Flatwoods, a narrative film about a documentary filmmaker who finds herself at the center of an alien conspiracy.” Other paranormal-related films were also shown throughout the day on Saturday. The Landmark Studio for the Arts Theater in Sutton featured a series of guest speakers including: Terry Tibbes, World Famous Paranormal Investigator; Sarah Cooper: Snallygaster, History, and WV Ties; Zach Bales: Roswell New Mexico; and Wild and Weird WV: Modern UFO Phenomena. Other local Braxton County attractions that participated in the Bazaar were The Haymond Haunted House, The WV BigFoot Museum, and the Elk Hostel. Vendors at the Braxxie Bazaar included Liz Pavlovic, Small Town Monsters, Wild and Weird WV, WV C.A.S.E, The Mothboys, Conjure Dust Design, The American Snallygaster Museum, Wooden West Virginia, Author George Dudding, Artist Mark May, The Bump Postcase, and Zach Bales, the Paranormal Roadtripper. Make plans to visit The Flatwoods Monster Fest and Braxxie Bazaar next September. It’s a ghostly good time for all.

ELK REFLECTS ORPHA ANDERSON

CELEBRATES HER 100TH BIRTHDAY

any people can say they have seen a lot of changes in the world, but none better than Orpha Anderson of Pinch, who just celebrated her 100th birthday on September 18, 2021. Her oldest son, Jim, said, “From Model-T Fords to the first airplane to pre-television--Mom has many stories to share.” He remembers her talking about WWII and how they had coupons to get certain food items that were so scarce. Her younger son Jeff, said, “When she went to get her COVID vaccination, she was the oldest person in line.” Orpha and her husband, John, grew up in the upper corner of Clay, Nicholas and Braxton counties. They married in 1936 and later purchased a home in Pinch, WV. Little did they know how significant their home would one day come to be. She and her husband volunteered their home as the location for the first St. Andrew Presyterian Church and also turned their garage into a chapel. The church grew from Orpha’s Sunday School class at another local church. The church eventually purchased the adjoining property to the Andersons and built what the community knows today as St. Andrew Presbyterian Church and St. Andrew Nursery School, located at 246 Pinch Road in Pinch. Orpha is one of the founding charter members of St. Andrew Presbyterian Church. Son Jeff said, “She taught Sunday School there for over 50 years and she still sings in the church choir.” She also was a preschool teacher at St. Andrew Nursery School for many years and was a positive influence on so many of our children.

Joe was born and raised in West Virginia and has now made a home in Lexington, Kentucky. “I’m not a writer of place or importance,” he writes. “Accepting that my art will be forgotten and that I’m not that special gives me the peace of mind I need. Knowing I can create and, through that process, improve myself and fix the problems that I have makes me feel good. It’s really about the process, not the product. Do you think Patti Smith did anything for the ‘likes’? Hell, no.” With the same vigor, he answers “The Chalice is art.” When I ask How does it feel as you approach your second novel release? “It’s the book that I wanted to write.” “West Virginia is about a man searching for his place

He replies “I hope it is something that jolts people into understanding what’s in front of them and what’s worth living for and who or what is most important to them. Like I said before, the book is about two people searching for each other. That’s the ending that made me want to pursue the idea.” It was his mom who encouraged his writing from the moment that four-year-old Joe began writing stories on the inside of cardboard boxes. “I started writing seriously when I was fifteen. I wrote a story about a dead squirrel for class, and the principal didn’t approve of it. It contained the word damn or something. Anyway, the principal called me into her office one day and waved the story in my face, and said I would never be a writer if I used the word damn. My mom, in secret, later went in and said ‘Have you ever heard of Hemingway? Of Steinbeck?’ She tells the story better than me. Anyway, it was pretty punk rock. I’ve never had anyone support my writing like that, or, quite frankly, even stand in my corner like that, and it still inspires me anytime I need a push to keep writing. As long as I’ve known him, Joe has shucked the idea of marketing and branding. One time I read with him in Kentucky and someone asked to buy his book and he shouted you should buy it on Amazon because it’s cheaper that way. Joe’s writing

Here is the excerpt from his book The Chalice: “I left someone who needed my help, someone I loved.” Something loud clanks, and the machine begins to whirl. “Sometimes it takes a little while to learn how to heal. Remember — be thoughtful, listen to others, and you’ll rarely do wrong, Joe. I’ve learned that now. I wish I’d known it in my life.” Scratchy music begins to play from the crystophone: Love Love will keep us together Think of me babe, whenever Some sweet-talkin’ girl comes along, singin’ her song Don’t mess around, you’ve got to be strong, just stop 'Cause I really — “How do I get back there, to the other world?” Malvici removes the crystal from the machine and puts it in my palm. “The two worlds are two pieces of paper glued together. You can get in and out because the glue is breaking down.” He squeezes my wrist. “Because now we’re living in Escuma.” I want to believe him. He is honest and stern, like a sailor; there is something entrancing about his easy knowledge about the crystals, his strength, his calm. “What do I need to do?”

Give me anyone else, please. Give me Saad Hossain. Give me Marguerite Duras. Give me Bethany Morrow. Give me Sam Farahmand. The late, great Gian DiTrapano said it best when he said, ‘You know what’s for everyone? Water. Water is for everyone. And if you’re publishing something for everyone, well, you’re publishing water.’” And so I ask Joe, the question I’ve been wondering for some time—If not career, or money, if not popularity— what is it you write for? And in typical Joe fashion, he replies: All writers face the same mystery time and again: why do I write? For some, it’s to express an emotion that can’t be conveyed through conversation. For others, it’s the creation of a commodity. One way or another, the writer puts themselves through the creative process and, sometimes, uncovers a truth about themselves. Whether that becomes part of the work, who knows? But, time and again, coming out on the other side causes growth. That was the whole idea behind The Chalice. I’m not the same guy that I was five years ago after writing these two books.

We walk through the piles of rocks, we walk through the rows of gems. Another time, a different world. And now I reach out my hand, now I take up a piece of pottery. A better time, a better world. I see, I see. Like in a dream. An ancient ceramic shard, broken from its source. A shard with Voorish symbols. It is what I have been searching for. Malvici’s voice is an incantation as I back away: “Hold the offering up and cry out for help to bind you. When the Old One appears to you, place the offering at His feet and ask Him if it will suffice. Do this with one you love as the unloved will not be welcome!” And now Vesper and I leave the rock and gem show. And now I look, and yes, now I see, see this place for what it really is, going to dirt and ashes, see this world for what it truly is: it is a secret thing. I paid the price with my life. I feel like I cannot keep propping up this fake world. Escarpa is dead. Long live Escuma.

New River Location Signs Will Mark the Spot

Lois explained, “Location markers on the river are valuable in several ways. First of all, they help emergency responders locate paddlers in distress. Second, they help paddlers know where they are on the river. Reducing response time is a critical issue for medical and emergency responders.”

She contacted Ken Tawney, President of ERTF, and brought this issue to light. Ken said, “Not only did Lois highlight the need for river trail markers, she also made a donation to help with this project. When someone is as dedicated to the cause as Lois has been, it made me realize how much this project was really needed . She and I have both witnessed people in distress on the river. Plus, the markers will help people plan their trips on the river and then keep track of progress toward reaching their destination. We plan to have the mileage markers plotted onto the interactive map that is on our website at ElkRiverTrail.org.”

AR The Elk River Trail Foundation (ERTF) is taking steps to increase the safety of kayakers on the Elk River. ERTF committee member and avid kayaker Lois Cole of Gassaway introduced the need for location markers on the river. She and Lori Dittman, owner of Elk River Paddle and Yak of Gassaway, had discussed the need for river markers to assist kayakers; additionally, they both were aware of kayakers who had been lost at times on the river and needed help with location and navigation. Through their hard work with ERTF’s Water Trail Committee, their vision for new river location signs will soon be a reality.

ELK RIVER BOAT LAUNCH

Ken said, “Braxton County will be the first to have the river markers, which will span about 25 miles. Once we develop and fine-tune our installation procedure in Braxton County, ERTF plans to install river trail markers along the entire Elk River Water Trail all the way to Charleston, which will total 102 miles.” The bright-orange markers feature the ERTF logo and black lettering which indicate how far the paddler is from Sutton Dam. Additionally, it will have a B, C or K to indicate whether the paddler is in Braxton, Clay or Kanawha County. Ken said, “The letter and number on each marker will be correlated

with a mileage marker on the State Road adjacent to the river. The correlation will be provided to first responders located near the trails so that they can quickly determine someone’s location in an emergency situation. The mileage markers will also be correlated with the mileage markers on the Elk River Rail Trail on the opposite side of the river. The list will include longitude and latitude, river mile, rail mile, road mile, and the closest bridge, road, boat launch and such.” He added, “The mileage markers on the rail trail are different from the river location markers and cannot be used on the water trail, but those markers will also be correlated to aid first responders when assisting individuals in distress on the trail.” Whether you are swimming, boating, hiking or cycling, ERTF’s goal is to have markers which can be readily seen and provided to 911 so that individuals can quickly locate and respond to the emergency at hand. Every minute of time saved in an emergency response situation can be critical.

She is now volunteering with the marker installation on the Elk River. “We are starting in Braxton County,” she explained. “We plan to have signs approximately one mile apart on the right-hand side of the river, coming south.”

These volleyball players were selected based on recognition received for their outstanding level of play.

The new Elk River Hookers opened for business at 2906 Pennsylvania Avenue, Charleston, between the Mink Shoals I-79 Exit and the Coonskin Park bridge on Route 119. Owners Patrick Smith and Jennifer McQuerrey stock their store with many local and West Virginiamade products. Jennifer said, “It is important to us to shop local and buy local. Patrick said, “This property was an ideal location for a fishing business. Angler’s Roost and Elk River Outpost were previously located off of the Mink Shoals exit for many years. After they went out of business, there was a definite need for a bait and

tackle store here locally, especially with the new boat/kayak launches at Clendenin, Blue Creek, Big Chimney, and Coonskin Park. You are going to see increased travel on the river.”

Legacy Foods Celebrates New Opening

AR Legacy Foods has just opened a new bakery and weekend dinner take-out at 10840 Clay Highway, Indore, WV! The best way to describe its location is “they are half-way between Clay and Gauley.” Their open house was held on Friday and Saturday, September 17 and 18 for a grand opening weekend.

Duane Legg, owner, said, “We did a soft opening on September 1 and our grand opening on the 17-18th. What a couple of weeks it has been! We had people travel to visit us from Monongalia, Cabell, Putnam, Clay, Braxton, and Kanawha counties!”

Duane’s grandfather previously had a grocery store at this location, but it was totally destroyed in the Flood of 2016. He always just thought of it as a nice big yard. “During the pandemic, we started baking. We baked and displayed our goods at the Arts and

Crafts Fair in Ripley. Then we started taking personal orders and the next thing we knew, we were covered up with orders,” he said. He also delivers to local markets including Olin’s Day and Night Market at Elk Hills (Crede), Small Town Market in Clay, and Midtown Grocery in Whitesville. Also, in April they started delivering to Shady Side Market outside of Glade Springs in Daniels. (Duane, was there or is there going to be a market in Summersville??) Duane said, “We clearly needed a bigger location with more kitchen space and that ‘nice big yard’ was the perfect location.” When asked where he learned his baking skills, Duane gives credit to his grandmothers. His mother worked until 6 PM and both of his grandmothers would put him in the kitchen in the evening where

he observed their cooking expertise. He said, “One grandmother was a fancy cook and the other grandmother was more of a country cook.” He said his grandmothers taught him important things such as “listen to your food and figure out your seasoning” and “don’t take all of the fat off.” Duane added that both grandmothers were amazing cooks and could make anything.

At age 23, Duane went to culinary school at Johnson and Wales University at Virginia Beach, VA after he worked at Clay County Ambulance Service and at Wilson Funeral Home to save money for college. At Johnson and Wales, he remembers learning that he could drop peaches in boiling water like tomatoes to remove the skins easily. “I thought that was the greatest knowledge ever,” he said. “I always hated peeling peaches.”

Elk River Trunk or Treat Events

AR and fellowship thanks to Elk Valley Physical Therapy and participating churches and businesses. The second trunk or treat event will be held at Coonskin Park on Wednesday, October 27 from 5:308 PM. This drive through trick or treat extravaganza is sponsored by Affiliated Financial Group. It is their second year partnering with local businesses, churches, and organizations to host this event. Randy Young, President of Affiliated Financial Group said, “Last year we had such a huge turnout that we decided to have this year’s event at Coonskin Park to alleviate traffic congestion and allow vehicles to move along quickly and smoothly.”

There are two special drive-through Trunk or Treat events for children this month, organized by two generous and dedicated Elk River businesses. Elk River Physical Therapy and Affiliated Financial Group LLC started early this fall planning for a safe trunk or treat for all children in the community. The first trunk or treat event will be held at the Clendenin United Methodist Church at 121 Koontz Avenue in Clendenin on Friday, October 15 from 6-8 PM. This event is sponsored by Elk Valley Physical Therapy. Andi Naylor Geary, owner, said, “We would like to use this year as one to help give back to our community that has given us so much and to find ways to partner with other businesses for these events.” Local businesses will be set up on the church parking lot and distribute treats to the children as cars proceed through the lot. Businesses and churches will be set up by 5 PM. This is a bye week for HHHS football so it is a great time to enjoy community fun

Something new this year, Affiliated Financial Group has also partnered with 97.5 and the WQBE Mountain Mission Food Drive. They will be collecting one can of canned food per child as admission to the Trick or Treat Drive Through Extravaganza. This will allow everyone a chance to give back and help stock the food pantry at the Mountain Mission for families in need.
