HELLO
& Welcome Back!
T
here is something about coming home that gives you a peace and comfort like no other. Even though we may have our own homes now, there is a special feeling when you visit or drive by your parents’ or grandparents’ home place.
For me it is walking up on brother Dave Knight’s front porch in Clendenin, our home place, sitting on the front steps, walking inside and seeing the beautiful stained glass windows and marble fireplace and remembering mom’s baby grand piano sitting there. When we drive the old road to the Interstate I remember the Maysel and Joe Knight’s (our grandparents) home place which was torn down when the Interstate was built. I can still close my eyes and see their big white house and remember coconut cream pie and a huge bowl of mashed potatoes with butter melting on top at their dinner table. Our son, Josh, flew home last month and we sat outside on the old glider and sang Feels Like Home to Me by Linda Ronstat. He hadn’t been able to travel home since the pandemic and this trip was long overdue for all of us. The lyrics, “Feels like home to me, feels like home to me, feels like I’m all the way back where I belong” still float through my mind even though he has returned to his own home. Summer is always a coming home time for the Elk River. The Pinch Volunteer Fire Department hosted the Annual Pinch Fire Prevention Carnival in June and The Pinch Reunion is celebrated at the Pinch Reunion Grounds in August. The Clendenin Homecoming Festival (CHF) is a newer festival and just celebrated its third year in June. HollieSue Schoolcraft, President of the CHF, said it best, “Even though there is a lot of work to be done since The Flood of 2016, we would like everyone to pause and celebrate accomplishments and come home to Clendenin. Even if Clendenin is not your home, we invite you to be a part of the Clendenin family.” May our hearts always treasure our coming home memories.

I was probably only 15 years old and I asked for the recipe and I’ve been making it ever since!” Gabi says this BBQ chicken is the best…”but don’t overcook it; you want the chicken juicy right off the grill.”

Making a Difference
T
wo examples of amazing people in Clendenin are Steve (Moose) Bird and his wife Jeannie Ladd Bird. Recently they were recognized by Mayor Kay Summers, who was just overwhelmingly elected again for a second two-year mayoral term, and the Clendenin Town Council who awarded them a Proclamation at their May 25 Town Council meeting. Mayor Summers said, “The Town celebrates Emma and Steve’s dedication to the betterment of our Town and their longtime love and attention to the beautification of our Town.”
future - then there will be six pieces of playground equipment for the children.” For the last five years Jeannie has received a grant from the WV REAP Litter Control. She has purchased and placed cigarette butt containers and trash cans throughout The Town. This year she has applied for the grant again so hopefully they will have additional funds to purchase more trash cans to place along the trails and waterway access points in Clendenin.
Jeannie said, “Moose and I were very honored to receive the Proclamation from The Town. Our Town and Clendenin community are very special to us and we enjoy doing what we can to help beautify it.”
Additionally, Jeannie and Moose restored playground equipment that was donated by 25045A New Clendenin Inc. (25045-ANC) and worked with the family of the late David Butterworth to enhance the Butterworth Discovery Park at the corner of Elk Ave and Cardinal Street. “The equipment was part of the former daycare which did not return after The Flood of 2016 and 25045ANC graciously donated it to us to refurbish and become a part of the park,” explained Jeannie. Now children have five new equipment pieces to enjoy while they are at the Discovery Park. This year Moose and Jeannie have planted flowers at the park and have plans to paint the stage as well. Jeannie said, “We are going to refinish the slide that is located in the existing park in Clendenin and add it to the Butterworth Discovery Park in the
During the winter, Moose and Jeannie worked with Clendenin Town Councilman Dave Knight to get the colors and the location approved for six new planters for the Town. They restored the pots this winter and Moose welded the stands for the containers. “Maywood Avenue receives full sun where the plants can thrive and it looks beautiful when visitors come to town for the Elk River trail or the kayak access in the upper end of Town,” said Jeannie. “All of the flowers were donated and we had some extra flowers which we used to enhance the flower bed surrounding the Police Memorial on the Town Hall lawn.”

Several years ago the Birds volunteered for the Adopt-A-Highway program by picking up litter and debris, starting at Walgreens on Route 119 and heading 3 miles toward the Park and Ride near I-79. Jeannie said, “We pick up trash along that section as well as at Reamer and in front of the old Herbert Hoover High School. Really, just wherever we see litter, we try to stop and pick it up.”

New Stage and Overlook Construction is also underway for a new stage and overlook at the end of Clendenin’s Main Street facing the Elk River thanks to a generous grant of $120,000 from the Dr. O. M. Harper and Ruth Harper Foundation. The 20’ x 32’ stage and overlook will allow the Town to host events for the community. It will also offer a delightful sitting area for residents to have lunch or just take in the gorgeous view. A temporary access road has been built behind the stage so that core drilling can take place to identify where the pilings are going to go for stabilization. Construction will begin when the core drilling is finished.
Hit the Trail The Town of Clendenin and Queen Shoals have been designated as new Elk River Trailheads. Clendenin will be one of four incorporated “trail towns” along the Elk River. The Department of Natural Resources secured steel to complete the bridge at Queen Shoals and the steel for restoration of the Morris Creek bridge has been ordered and is expected to arrive in 60-90 days. Once the two bridges have been replaced, the 4.5 mile section from Clendenin to Queen Shoals will open. The last phase from Queen Shoals to Hartland will take place after the Morris Creek bridge has been restored and the trail has been completed. Work has also commenced on a new section of trail from Duck north to Frametown.

The Elk River Trail when completed will offer over 70 miles of trail for hiking, biking and horse riding. There will be 4.5 miles of trail between the Clendenin and Queen Shoals trailheads. The 28mile section of the trail from Duck to Hartland is open now to the public.
A Visit from Our Senator Senator Shelly Moore Capito visited Clendenin recently and toured the town to review the flood recovery efforts in Clendenin. She toured the old Clendenin Grade School site, the Riverview Business Park including Koontz Gym, Cabin Creek Clinic, Riverview Pharmacy and the Riverview apartments that are awaiting FEMA settlement. She also visited local businesses on Main Street and had lunch at Momma Payne’s Diner with many of the local residents. Mayor Kay Summers said, “It was a great day to visit with Senator Capito and show her the progress that has been made since The Flood of 2016 and to show her new businesses and attractions that are coming to our Town.”
Clendenin Grade School Updates The former Clendenin Grade School was destroyed by The Flood of 2016. Recently, FEMA appointed The Town of Clendenin as owners of the property. The old grade school is scheduled to be torn down this summer except for the historical doorway at the entrance of the school. Mayor Kay Summers said, “We received permission from FEMA to retain the grand entrance into the grade school and it will be incorporated into new plans when The Town develops the site.
Ben Ashley, WV School Building Authority Director of Architectural Services said, “We were on site for progress meetings with the contractors for both the Clendenin Elementary and Hoover site recently. The amount of earth they’re moving to build the school sites, ball fields, and roads is nothing short of spectacular. We are working to ensure the contractors stay on schedule so we can open these new schools on time. We can’t wait for students, teachers, parents, and grandparents to walk inside. It will be a special day for everyone in the Elk River areas and for the State of West Virginia.”

The new Clendenin Elementary, which will include Bridge Elementary, is being constructed off of U.S. Route 119 on Wolverton Mountain Road. Removal of the mountaintop is currently underway.

Lions Club Lends a Helping Hand The historic clock on the corner of Maywood and Main Streets has been repaired thanks to the Clendenin Lions Club. Mayor Kay Summers said, “We are so thankful for the generosity of the Clendenin Lions Club who donated the money needed to purchase parts for the clock repair. We are also thankful for the Clendenin Police Department who helped make the repairs to the clock.” The combined efforts of both groups now have the historic clock operational again.
Celebrating Clendenin The third annual Clendenin Homecoming Festival celebrated another successful year of fun and fellowship over Father’s Day weekend. It was a wonderful time to stop and come together to visit with neighbors and friends and renew acquaintances with those who have moved away. The Gambill Amusement Carnival arrived on Wednesday, June 16th. This year they were set up in the former Smith’s FoodFair parking lot on Route 119. The Homecoming Festival held a parade on Saturday featuring the Clendenin Volunteer Fire Department, CHF 2021 Queen Tiffani Crouch and her homecoming court, and an array of floats, antique cars, horses, and State and County dignitaries.

The Festival hosted live music concerts by rising Nashville Star Adam Calvert on Friday and Thomas Gabriel (grandson of Johnnie Cash) on Saturday. Also on Saturday, the 17th Annual Clendenin United Methodist Church (CUMC) Father’s Day Car Show was held in the Koontz Avenue church parking lot with 80-100 cars.

Vendors were located in The Town of Clendenin and offered delicious food and highlighted local craftsmen and businesses. Amazing fireworks closed out Saturday night’s festivities. The Festival ended on Sunday after church and a Gospel Music Concert by Michael Combs on Main Street.

Elk River Trail Updates and Events
Exciting news! The trail bridge at Queen Shoals now has steel beams and planks! Also, the steel for the Morris Creek Railroad Trestle has been ordered and reconstruction of that bridge will begin as soon as it arrives. The 3.5 mile trail between Queen Shoals and Clendenin is one step closer to being completed.

The Elk River Trail Foundation (ERTF) has been working to build a trailhead at Queen Shoals adjacent to the building beside the trail. The 2 ¼ acre tract between the trail and the river was donated to ERTF by the Queen Shoals Full Gospel Church. A generous donation from the Dr. O. M. Harper and Ruth Harper Foundation of $50,000 plus many other business and individual donations have helped the ERTF develop the Queen Shoals Trailhead for the community.

Dave Knight, Elk River Trail Foundation Project Manager said, “The former addition to the Queen Shoals Church had a cracked foundation and the addition has been removed. In its place there is now a 35 x 45 concrete pad for parking. The actual church was retained and has two stories and 3500 sq. ft. which will be available for lease to businesses. Whether it is for a restaurant or business, it is an excellent opportunity for business development.” Special events happening now on The Elk River Trail include an exciting Scavenger Hunt for ages 9-21 and
their families which will run from Memorial Day to Labor Day weekend. Participants receive a WVU-themed gift when they register and, each time they find a designated spot on the scavenger hunt and follow the directions, they will be entered in a drawing for prizes. Matt Holbert, board member of ERTF, said, “Explore the Elk River and its trail system by trying to find some of our favorite spots from Sutton Dam to the confluence of the Elk and Kanawha Rivers in Charleston. Travel by hiking, biking, kayaking...create your own adventure. June was an exciting month on the trail for events as well. A Healthy Grandfamilies Bike Rodeo sponsored by the WVU Extension Service and Clay, WV FRN was held June 22 and June 30 at the Dundon and Duck trail entrances.The bike rodeo provided bike safety tips and a spin on the new Elk River Trail. Every child who participated received a free bike helmet and sunscreen. A unique event in May in Clay was The Treasure Trail, which featured 30+ storybook characters stationed along the trail from the Dundon Trailhead to the Pisgah bridge in Clay. Food and booth games were available at the trail entrance in Dundon and participants found hidden treasures along the trail for prizes. The event was sponsored by the Clay County Parks and Recreation, the Clay County Golden Delicious Festival, and the Clay County Business Development Authority.
Also, mark your calendar for Saturday, October 23 at 10 AM. Volunteers are needed to help clear brush on a ½-acre tract of land on the south bank of the Elk River near Ivydale for a couple of hours. The land, donated by Robert Sowa and his wife, provides public access to both the rail trail and the water trail. Bring your bike or kayak, join us at the Ivydale Trailhead, and enjoy the rail or water trails afterward. More information will be provided on the ERTF Facebook closer to these events.

Welcome Door Decor & Moore! Door Decor & Moore has joined the Elk River business community! Jeff and Gina Moore, owners, opened their shop in the former Kelly’s Candles building at Elkview (right below Little Sandy bridge). This charming store is a primitive, farmhouse, country store, specializing in custom wreaths and hand-poured candles. Check out their patriotic section, just in time for July 4th decorating. There are also inspirational, country, and primitive wreaths and a variety of home decor. Check out the light up gnomes, adorable rag dolls and stuffed animals. There are also window boxes with flowers, floral displays, lamps, quilts, pictures, signs, baskets, linens, and furniture just to name a few. CELEBRATING GOOD TIMES IN PINCH WITH PVFD

une 9-12 was an exciting time In Pinch, courtesy of the Pinch Volunteer Fire Department (PVFD). Four evenings were packed with family fun at the 2021 Annual PVFD Fire Prevention Carnival. There is nothing better than laughter and camaraderie while helping the PVFD raise funds for fire prevention activities. Chief John Thaxton said, “The Department was honored to have such wonderful support from the community.” Also, Chief Thaxton and the Department thanked Servpro of North Charleston and Teays Valley for sponsoring Saturday night’s firework display. During the weekend of May 15 the PVFD hosted a successful hot dog, yard and craft sale. It was so successful, in fact, that they had to restock their hot dog supplies three times. Chris Avis, firefighter, EMT, and President of the PVFD Board of Directors said, “2020 was a rough year on us just like it was on everyone. We had to cancel all of our fundraising activities.” Avis also added that the PVFD is planning another hot dog and craft sale this fall. Vendor information will be available once a date has been set. EMS Archers Fly High Elkview Middle School (EMS) Archery Team displayed excellent skills again, this time placing 23rd overall in the World Open Tournament. The team was ranked 6th in the Nation at the National Archery in the Schools Program (NASP) National Tournament in May and qualified for the World Open Tournament in June. Max Moore, EMS sixth grader, was the school’s first ever individual WV State Champion in the Middle School Male Division. At the World Open Tournament, Max was definitely on target as well, this time finishing 4th overall in the Middle School Male Division out of 368 middle school boys. Max shot a 289 out of a possible 300. He also placed 1st overall for the Sixth Grader Division out of 142 sixth grade boys and was 30th overall out of 808 Boys Combined Division (elementary, middle and high school). Additionally, he placed 50th overall out of 1567 total participants in the boys and girls All-Division.

Congratulations to the EMS archers and to Max, the first EMS archer to win a NASP State Championship and to place in the World Tournament. The team is coached by Eddie Gray, head coach, and Raquel Gray, Ron Moore, and Jeff Mullins, assistant coaches.

t’s always exciting to hear the crack of the bat as Herbert Hoover High School softball and baseball players make their presence known.
Both the The HHHS Boys Baseball team and The Lady Huskies Softball team captured first place at their AA Sectional Championships. The teams continued to Regionals June 14-16. The Lady Huskies played Lincoln and the Boys played Philip Barbour and both HHHS teams emerged victorious and qualified for the Region 2, AA State Tournament. Under the direction of Missy Anderson, the Lady Huskies have been AA State Champs in 2014, 2017, 2018, and 2019. Last year, 2020, COVID cancelled all games. The HHHS Boys Baseball team has been AA Baseball champs in 2007 and 2013. The Lady Huskies won the first game against the Lincoln High Cougars 4-1. The second game of Regionals against Lincoln required Coach Smith to go with a series of bunts to strategically move her players around the bases and tie the score. The hits kept coming and the Lady Huskies took the lead for the win with a final score of 7-3. Coach Smith said, “We continued our momentum in the next inning. Once it snowballs, we are hard to stop!”

Coach JR Oliver was excited to see his baseball team capture the AA Regional Championship. “The rain delay in the first Philip Barbour game required the Huskies to travel back to Philip Barbour to finish the last two innings the following evening,“ he said; “We were leading 9-6 in the top of the 6th inning and we wanted to keep that momentum going for the win and we did, with a final score of 13-6.” The Huskies played the second game back home on the Jeff Holiday Field and captured the Region 2 Championship with a score of 9-6.

HHHS STATE TENNIS RESULTS Congratulations to Landon Persinger, AA-A #2 Seed Tennis WVSSAC State Runner-up. He was also named to the AA-A All State Tennis Team! At the Cardinal Conference Tournament, Madison Harper took first place in the #4 Singles and Caroline Dysart and Kara Blount took first place in the #3 Doubles.
2021 RECORD-BREAKING WRESTLERS Congratulations to the HHHS Huskies for their record-breaking 2021 State Wrestling Tournament. Twelve wrestlers qualified to move on to the State Tournament and six of them placed. The previous record was in 2001 with five State placers. The team finished in seventh place overall .

Individual placers included: 120 Dylan Corbin - 6th place; 126 Tyler Teel - 5th place; 145 Andrew Rollyson - 6th place; 152 Zach Paxton - 6th place; and 220 Mason Atkinson - 4th place. Also, congratulations to seniors Ethan Dye, Tyler Teel, Tyler Grindstaff, Zach Paxton, and Christian Hall.

WILL MERCER CAP TURES SIXTH AT STATES The AA State Track Meet was held on Friday, June 11 at Laidley Field. Will Mercer, HHHS senior, placed sixth in the 110 High Hurdles and seventh in the 300 Hurdles. He was also the AA Region 3 300 Hurdle Champion. HHHS State qualifiers included Lauren Mullins - Shot Put and Discus; Caleb Siders - 400 and 800 Meters; John Duvall - 3200 Meters; Will Mercer -110 and 300 Meter Hurdles and Long Jump; Josh Stuart - Shot Put and Discus; and Caleb Siders, John Duvall, Holden McClung, and Will Mercer - Boys 4 x 800.

REMEMBERING JUNE 23, 2016
Five years ago in June 2016, we had strange rain storms on and all during the week. Looking back, I remember thinking how weird it was to have these short bursts of hard rain. Those storms were just a precursor of what was to come as the waters continued to rise. We all went to bed one night thinking the rain had stopped and the rivers would cease rising. What we saw in the daylight on June 24 revealed total devastation.

ELK’S JOURNAL REMEMBERING MY BIG BROTHER BY HILLARY HARDMAN LANCASTER
Hillary Hardman Lancaster, daughter of Holli and Roger Hess of Clendenin and Bob Hardman of Jane Lew, shared a beautiful tribute to her big brother, Rob, who passed away 22 years ago. Her words give comfort and remind us to “listen and know I am near.” Hillary graduated from Herbert Hoover High School in 2003, her husband, Nate Lancaster, in 2001, and her big brother, Rob, would have graduated with the Class of 2000.
“Today, I will choose joy despite my sadness. The Bible says that the Lord is close to the broken-hearted, and He has never forsaken me. I find my strength in the Lord. Twenty-two years ago my big brother, Rob, went home to be with the Lord. Instead of grieving what I’ve lost today, I choose to celebrate what he has gained. I choose to celebrate his life, the 16 years and 11 months that he graced this side of Heaven with his presence and made his mark on the world.
Rob was someone who made everybody feel like a somebody. He was different. I see his sweet, loving smile in the smiles of my girls. His gentle soul in Lilli, his unwavering commitment in Olivia, and his witty personality in Laney. I see him in the calmness of a clear-blue summer sky. I see him in the ocean waves at the beach. In the raindrops that fall in spring, in the changing colors of the leaves in autumn, and in the snow that freshly blankets the mountaintops in the winter. I see him everywhere. It’s a comforting reminder that he is still with me, that I never needed the chance to say goodbye, that he’s with me wherever I go, and that I will see him again.
