Hello & Welcome Back! January can feel like such a long month. Many of us are cooped up inside due to the inclement weather, bad roads or illness. For others it can be a depressing month after the hectic holidays. It’s important that we make time to remember our friends and neighbors. Even a simple card or a Facebook message saying “I’m thinking of you” can lift someone’s spirits. If you are going out to eat, maybe pick up a to-go meal or take a plate of leftovers or a bowl of soup to someone you know is shut-in. Giving of yourself is a great feeling for both you and the recipient. One thing I have learned over the years is not to judge others because you do not ever know what adversity or heartache is going on in their lives. All of us need to know we matter to someone and the residents of Elk River are known for their kindness and giving hearts. This month’s feature story on 25045--A New Clendenin highlights a local non-profit organization which dedicates their time, money, and services to enrich the lives of others. Also, ERL is recognizing business owners Gary and Glenn Pauley of Elk River Automotive and Elk River Automotive Supply who take pride in “treating people right”. Speaking of remembering our neighbors, past and present, don’t forget to see Bessie Bond’s famous Ham Loaf recipe which was lovingly shared with us by her grandson, Luke Smith, a 1975 Hoover Alumni and read about the talented Barnhouse family and extended family. BESSIE BOND’S FAMOUS HAM LOAF

Luke said she used to cook for the Lion’s Club dinners in the 60s and early 70s at the Clendenin Recreation Center and this recipe was served many times. Bessie and A.F. opened Bond Drug Store in 1939. They operated in two different locations with the first location near Tater Young’s store on Maywood Avenue and the second on the corner of Main Street and Maywood Avenue where it also had a lunch counter for the townspeople. 25045 A NEW CLENDENIN When a community joins hands, good things will happen

Everyone who met Jack Suttle knew he was a man of integrity, committed to making a difference on the Elk River. Whether it was in the church, schools, or our communities, he was an integral part. Jack lost his battle with cancer on October 12, 2018; however, his legend will live on through the non-profit organization, 25045--A NEW CLENDENIN INC., where he served as their first President for 15 years. The vision for 25045--A NEW CLENDENIN INC. (25045--ANC) began in 2003 when a group of residents discussed the need to form a non-profit organization to boost economic development in the community with Commissioner Kent Carper of the Kanawha County Commission. Bill Good from BIDCO was designated to help the town form an organization for that purpose. The name 25045 was chosen because it was the zip code not only for Clendenin, but also for Herbert Hoover High School and the surrounding Roane and Clay County areas. 25045--ANC’s first project in 2003 was to take steps to acquire the old Clendenin Middle School (formerly Clendenin High School and then the Junior High School) building which had been closed since 2002. The vacant building was in disrepair and the object of numerous break-ins and vandalism. The building had a gymnasium which would be an asset to the community and many other options that would

be attractive to new businesses in the historic district of Clendenin. While 25045--ANC wasn’t exactly sure what would be the future of the old Middle School property, they knew it would be an asset for the town. Members of 25045--ANC visited Welch, WV and looked at a school that had been repurposed for a battered women and children’s shelter. They traveled to Danville and viewed another former school building which is now the town hall and recreation center. After numerous meetings with the Kanawha County Board of Education, the Kanawha County Commission and Congresswoman (Senator) Shelley Moore Capito, the building was finally secured in 2004. The old band room which was connected to the school was repaired and sold to the Kanawha County Emergency Ambulance Authority (KCEAA) for their new Clendenin location. The next step included working with Terrell Ellis, consultant, to contract with AU and Associates from Lexington, KY, to form a partnership. Plans were then made to renovate the first and third floors of the building into 18 one- and two-bedroom apartments and the second floor was leased to Cabin Creek Health Systems for a health clinic, a dental clinic and a pharmacy. In October 2011 the dream became a reality and the Clendenin Health Center and the new apartment tenants moved into the building. The next business to lease

25045: A New Clendenin ($50,000 during the 6-week period). 25045-ANC is currently working to acquire funding to restore utilities to the third floor and have the 10 upstairs apartments ready for occupancy again this spring.

space in the building was a daycare center. 25045--ANC partnered with PATCH, a nonprofit organization from Roane County, which operated the daycare for several years. Also, a workout center was located on the first floor as well.

With the assistance of the Kanawha County Commission, a new coding and training program, Mined Minds, is now located on the building’s rebuilt first floor and has graduated three classes of students. Most recently, the building is the new temporary home for the Kanawha Public Library, Clendenin Branch. The gymnasium continues to serve as a hub for the community and is in demand for such events as reunions, birthday parties, baby and wedding showers, basketball games, and most recently the Herbert Hoover High School Homecoming Dance. The organization just purchased 100 chairs and 20 tables which can be rented for events and will accommodate groups up to 175 people.

Tragically, the devastating Flood of 2016 destroyed the ground floor and forced the evacuation of all tenants in the building (no utilities or operational elevator). “Little did we know how vital Cabin Creek Health Systems would be to our community until The Flood,” said Kay Summers, new 25045--ANC president. The Cabin Creek Health Clinic staff went doorto-door in the flood-ridden town of Clendenin and surrounding areas and gave over 1500 immunizations. They continued to operate the health clinic out of two tents and an RV loaned to them before they were able to move back in the building with the assistance of a gasolinepowered generator at their own expense 18

The third project was the Roxy Theater which was donated to 25045--ANC by Donald Moore from Charleston, WV. The building had lost most of its roof, had an unstable back wall, and literally had trees growing inside the building. 25045--ANC acquired grant monies to repair the front facade and roof, rebuild the back wall and install electric. Donations were also received from the Dr. O. M. Harper and Ruth Harper Foundation and the Wehrle Foundation (Martha and Russell Wehrle) to assist with the repairs and restoration. The group was in the process of applying for a grant from WV Cultural and

History to rebuild the lobby, concession area, and restrooms when The Flood of 2016 totally destroyed its interior. Renovating the Roxy is again a primary focus of 25045--ANC so that this historic building can be a premier location for performing arts and community events. 25045--ANC also acquired property near the old Clendenin Bridge that previously accessed Main Street in Clendenin. The organization hopes to develop this area so that the Town can encourage and host more local activities. Kay Summers said, â€œThrough the efforts of the organization, over 7 million dollars have been invested in bricks and mortar renovation in the Town of Clendenin, not counting the ensuing positive economic impact. 25045--ANC is excited to bring new opportunities for growth and community involvement in the future. Our goal is, and always will be, to promote economic development and enrich the lives of the residents of the Clendenin area.â€?

25045--ANC next purchased the existing post office building. Jack Suttle helped with the negotiations and the post office operation was not interrupted. After The Flood of 2016; however, the building was heavily damaged and the post office had to operate out of a mobile trailer until 25045--ANC made extensive repairs and the post office could move back to their location.

David Wagoner, Chief of the Pinch Volunteer Fire Department

This month ERL would like to give a special tribute to David Wagoner, Chief and Life Member of the Pinch Volunteer Fire Department and Captain of Engine 8 on C Shift in Charleston, WV. He is also a board member for the Kanawha County Ambulance Authority and Kanawha Metro 911. He is a second generation firefighter and chief, following in his dad’s (Sonny Wagoner) footsteps. David grew up around the Pinch Fire Department and was influenced by many members of the Department that served in the 70s and the 80s. He felt both privileged and honored to be allowed on the Department at 16 years of age by the

reigning Fire Chief Bill Allen (the longest serving Chief of the Department and Charter Member). David was a certified Emergency Medical Technician when he graduated from Herbert Hoover High School in 1989 and became a Paramedic

the following year. According to fellow firefighter, Justin Teel, “David not only loves being a firefighter, he lives it.” Highlights of his Fire Department Training include National Pro Board Firefighter 2, Fire Service Instructor, Fire Officer 3, hazardous material, collapse rescue and trench rescue technician, and he remains a student of the fire service to this day. He has been a member of the Pinch Volunteer Fire Department since 1987 and has over 30 years of experience. David said, “I attribute the success our Department has seen for nearly 60 years to the courage, commitment, and dedication of our members, both past and present, and to the support the citizens of our great communities that we serve have shown.” “David’s dedication and leadership is an inspiration to his friends and fellow firefighters,” said Justin. David and his wife, Kelli, reside in Pinch.

THEY SHARE A COMMON THREAD Every year in October, Becky Lynch Prichard continues a tradition with her family and extended family. They each contribute a quilt block inspired by someone in their lives, and come together to exchange and assemble the final masterpiece.

hen Georgie and Marshall Barnhouse married on August 29, 1916, they had no idea of the generations of talent that would emerge from their 12 children. Thirty-two first cousins later, the Barnhouse descendants have recognized their common thread: over 16 talented quilters who have won from local to state to international awards.

The Barnhouse family began to recognize that many of them shared Georgieâ€™s love for fabric and creating homemade gifts. The family would come together for holidays or funerals and share memories and their sewing projects with one another. As a result, the first Barnhouse Bee originated in 2008 when first cousin, Rebecca Lynch Rollyson Prichard, invited family quilters to her home at Mink Shoals. Everyone brought their quilts

and completed their shared family quilt. Two years ago the quilt challenge theme was honoring the veterans in the families. There were 15 veterans at the Barnhouse Bee and each was presented with a quilt, thanking them for their service. This yearâ€™s theme honored their Aunt Betty Barnhouse Swiney, who died on May 20, 2017. In celebration of her life as a beautician, each quilt block featured something related to a beauty shop, ranging from hairspray, rollers, tip jar, hair dryer, etc.

While many of the family members lived here in the Elk River area, others travelled in from Ohio, Georgia, Indiana, Florida, other parts of WV and even from Canada! The Barnhouse Bee has continued to meet every year since then on the third Saturday of October. The number of attendees has increased each year and this past October they had over 50 which included 16 quilters, spouses, and grandchildren. Every year the quilters have a quilt challenge which usually centers on a family memory. The first year the challenge was to make a canning jar quilt block, in remembrance of Grandma Georgieâ€™s cellar of canned goods. Each quilter made 16 blocks with a canning jar of a designated vegetable and they all exchanged with each other at the Bee. Quilters then returned home

The annual Barnhouse Bee meeting has expanded to include other family members who also are skilled with wood carving, jewelry making, watercolor painting, pottery, art, gardening, antiques and music. Itâ€™s a special time for their family to return to the Elk River to celebrate their roots and their heritage.

Cabin Creek Health Systems--Clendenin Health Center is offering a free six-week class to help patients understand more about successfully managing their diabetes. Classes will begin Tuesday, February 5 from 1:30 pm - 3:00 pm. Traci Gillispie joined the Clendenin Health Center staff in July 2018 and is a certified diabetes educator. She has been an RN for over 25 years and also serves as the Director of Nursing for the Center. Traci works with the care coordinator team and provides diabetes management workshops that are free to their patients. The workshop curriculum was developed by UIC and is evidence based. Program Basics includes nutrition (healthy meal preparation and portion control), exercise, medications, stress management, diabetes complications, medical care and monitoring, and glucose level control. The Living With Diabetes class consists of meetings once a week for six weeks. Call Crystal to register for the class at 304.548.7272.

The good news is you can order breakfast anytime. Their menu is family-style food and homemade desserts with specials on Sunday and a couple of days during the week. The restaurant welcomes group parties, employee luncheons/dinners, club meetings and more. There is also a discount for senior citizens and Veterans. Even though Michelle was raised in Bomont, her family considers Clendenin their second home. They came to Clendenin to shop, eat, and attended Reamer Gospel Tabernacle. Michelle commented that “she is excited to be in Clendenin serving the wonderful people on Elk River. It’s like coming home!”

The residents at Meadowbrook Nursing Home were treated to a special performance by the Elkview Middle School (EMS) majorettes on December 20, 2018. This was the corps’ last performance of the year. They performed The Christmas Show at the local elementary schools, St. Andrew’s Day Care, and Meadowbrook Nursing Home. EMS Majorettes are no strangers to performing. They have performed during EMS football games as well as multiple parades. The corps is under the direction of Bobby Jenks, Band Director, and is coached by Justa Dolin. Captains/Twirlers are Caroline Dysart and Jillian Dolin. The seventh grade majorettes include: Tabatha Pauley, Grace Gant, and Alex Christian. Sixth grade majorettes are Sailor Lucas, Ava Armstrong, and Kenzie Taylor.
