Hello & Welcome! Can you feel the excitement in the air? September is here! There is a wonderful sense of pride in this month’s issue. ERL is always honored to feature stories that reflect the heart, soul and love for the Elk River community, and it gives all of us an opportunity to beam with pride with and for them. As I walked into the first Hoover football scrimmage this year, I had a lot on my heart. This is our grandson, Colton’s, senior year. Seeing a Tawney back on the Hoover field since our son, Nate, graduated in 1995 has been one of our top grandparent moments. Ken and I cheer like it’s the super bowl on any of his plays. There are no words to explain the love and pride we have been lucky enough to experience. Speaking of pride, ERL is so proud of Noah Layne, a 2024 Hoover graduate, who has started his own business and all we can say is, hide and watch, because this kid is going places! This is just the beginning. We can all learn a lesson from him: love what you do and do what you love. See our feature article in this month’s issue. Also, this month we are honored to feature Scout Cox and Olivia McDonald, two special 2026 Hoover graduates who are using their skills to create a 19’ x 5’ ft. mural for the town of Clendenin. Neisha Shank, the art teacher at HHHS, is so proud of their dedication and desire to help create a legacy honoring the history of Clendenin. Be sure to visit the town this fall, and see their artwork on Main Street. It goes without saying that the Elk River community beams with pride watching our kids grow. The more amazing part is we are proud not just of our own kids, but all of the Elk River kids. They are our kids, too, and I pray that when they graduate, they remember the love we wrapped them in here at home. In honor of football season, I’d like to conclude with Go Blake Fisher, Dalton Myers, Mighty Lopez and Voss Duernberger. Elk River is ringing a cow bell for you while you make your debut on a collegiate field!!! Stay safe my friends! See ya on the bleachers!

GRILLED RUMP ROAST

ere’s a delicious recipe for a roast that tastes as good as brisket! Gabi said, “This is the

best roast I’ve ever made according to my family!” She recommends slicing it thin and you can even have enough for sandwiches the next day. Perfect to have on hand during the upcoming sports seasons. Give this one a try!

GRILLED RUMP ROAST

INGREDIENTS

DIRECTIONS

• 3-4 lb. rump roast • Yellow mustard • BBQ Seasoning (I used Paula Deen’s Butt Massage and Famous Dave’s Pork Rub)

STEP 1

Pat roast dry with paper towels and place on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.

STEP 2

Massage a generous amount of yellow mustard over the entire roast.

STEP 3

Spring dry rub on all sides, pressing the seasoning into the roast.

STEP 4

Wrap tightly with saran wrap and refrigerate overnight. The next day, set the roast out so it comes to room temperature, about an hour prior to cooking. Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

STEP 5

Cook the rump roast over indirect heat with the grill closed, keeping the grill temperature between 300-350 degrees. Cook for 1 ½ to 2 hours or until the roast reaches desired doneness using a digital thermometer. Remove from the grill and rest about 10 minutes, covered loosely with foil. Move to a cutting board and slice.

"Not only does it highlight their talents, it incorporates the history of Clendenin in a gorgeous piece of art for our community." As for the young artists behind it all, their futures look bright. Olivia is headed to Fairmont State University this fall, with a goal of becoming an illustrator, while Scout is exploring her own path in design, and is seeking a tattoo artist apprenticeship. "Both students are extremely talented," Neisha said, "and I'm excited to see where their careers take them!"

rom childhood fascination to FAA-certified drone pilot, Elkview native Noah Layne is turning a lifelong interest in drones into a growing business. For as long as he can

remember, Noah Layne has been fascinated by drones. What started with toy drones buzzing around the backyard when he was just four years old has grown into a passion, an education, and now a business. At only 20 years old, this Elkview native is bringing drone pressure washing technology to West Virginia while building a future in the community he has always called home. As the founder of NL Drone Services and WV Drone Wash, Noah offers a safer, more efficient way to clean commercial buildings, churches, warehouses, hotels, industrial facilities, and residential roofs. Using specialized drone equipment, many jobs can now be completed from the ground, cutting down on the need for ladders, lifts, and workers climbing to dangerous heights. Noah launched his business in November 2025 and operates across West Virginia and surrounding states. His current project is a big one, cleaning at West Virginia International Yeager Airport in Charleston. The team recently wrapped up phase one, which included cleaning all the windows on the tarmac and control tower, and they're now moving into phase two. "Complying with all of the FAA and military drone requirements and runway coordination has made this one of the most challenging jobs we have done," said Amy Layne, Noah's mother and business partner.

While drone pressure washing may be new to many people, Noah's journey with drones began long before the technology became a growing industry. During an elementary school career project, he chose drones as his topic and was told at the time that they were toys, not a real career path. Rather than let that discourage him, Noah held onto the dream that had captured his imagination since childhood. Today, that same childhood interest has become the foundation of a growing business. Noah is currently furthering his education at Embry Riddle Aeronautical with coursework that spans advanced math, physics, drone building, infrastructure, air traffic control, airspace, and weather systems. "A normal week for me includes three to four presentations, multiple labs, and several written papers," he explained. Many of his classmates are military personnel, including skilled pilots and engineers—giving Noah a front-row seat to some of the best in the field. Alongside his studies, Noah holds an FAA Part 107 Remote Pilot Certificate, which allows him to operate drones commercially, and this December he'll take the final test for his AUV Trusted Operator certification. This business is truly a family affair. Noah's mother, Amy Layne, is also an FAA Part 107 certified pilot, a Herbert Hoover High School graduate, and a current teacher at Herbert Hoover. She serves as the team's researcher and planner. And behind the scenes, Noah's dad, Tom Layne, also a Herbert Hoover graduate. is often the quiet force keeping everything running, handling equipment, transportation, and hands-on maintenance like inspecting the rig, hoses, and clamps. "Recently, we had a hose come off in the middle of a truck," Amy recalled. "Luckily, Tom was there to address the issue, and we were back up in minutes!" Together, the three of them each bring their own expertise to the table, and it shows. What makes Noah's story stand out most is his commitment to building his future right here at home. At a time when many young people feel they have to leave West Virginia to find opportunity, Noah is proving it's possible to create that opportunity where you're planted. "When I was younger, I was told drones could not be a career," Noah said. "Looking back, I'm glad I didn't let that stop me.

BUSY AS BEES

his summer, Frank, the boys, and I have been "busy as bees," and it turns out that's not just an expression! Bees really do have to stay busy, because their lives are short.

Worker bees and drones live anywhere from three weeks to six months, depending on their job, while the queen bee can live two to five years. It actually takes the combined lifetime of 12 bees (about six weeks of work) to make just one teaspoon of liquid gold: honey.

HARVEST TIME

Beekeepers typically "rob," or harvest, their honey in late summer or early fall, right after the region's major nectar flow ends. Pure honey lasts indefinitely when stored correctly. You should keep the lid tightly closed, store it in a cool, dry place, and always use a clean spoon. Keep water out of the jar, since moisture can cause honey to ferment and spoil (toss it if you ever see mold or notice an off smell). If your honey turns cloudy, thick, or grainy, don't worry, that's actually a sign it's pure! Just set the jar in warm water and it will melt back into a liquid.

WHY BEES MATTER TO OUR GARDENS

Without bees, our vegetables wouldn't produce nearly as well. Honeybees visit bright, scented flowers to drink nectar for energy and gather pollen for their nests. A bee's fuzzy body acts like a magnet, picking up loose pollen grains as it lands on a blossom. When it flies to the next flower, that pollen rubs off onto the new flower's stigma, fertilizing it. This is what helps plants and crops thrive. Vegetable plants like squash, cucumbers, and berries produce far more food when bees visit regularly. Bees are our most important pollinators, responsible for pollinating a large share of the fruits, vegetables, and berries we eat. And honeybees aren't the only bees on the job. Native solitary bees, bumblebees, squash bees, and other wild bees all pitch in too. Plenty of vital pollinators aren't bees at all, including butterflies, moths, flies, and beetles, and all of them help

move pollen from flower to flower. Some vegetables, like corn,

are wind-pollinated. Others, like tomatoes and peppers, are self-pollinating, but bumblebees still help these plants along through "buzz pollination," vibrating the flower to release even more pollen.

HOW YOU CAN HELP THE BEES

Since honeybees are so essential to our gardens, here's how we can help them thrive: Plant pollen and nectar-rich flowers such as coneflowers, black-eyed Susans, bee balm, lavender, and flowering herbs. Let dandelions and clover grow in your yard before mowing. Consider turning an unused patch of grass into a wildflower patch. Bees need water too. Set out a shallow birdbath or dish with fresh water and pebbles so they can land safely and drink without drowning. Avoid pesticides, which can poison bees or disrupt their navigation and health. Skip artificial turf; it destroys ground-nesting habitat and eliminates natural forage. Come fall, leave autumn leaves, brush, and twig piles in corners of your yard to insulate hibernating bees. Hold off on cutting back dead annuals or ornamental grasses until late spring, and leave bare soil and compost heaps undisturbed through winter so you don't disturb anyone sleeping below.

A WORD ABOUT STINGS

Honeybees don't want to sting you; in fact, they die when they do. A honeybee's barbed stinger gets caught in your skin like a tiny harpoon, and as the bee pulls away, the stinger tears loose along with its vital organs. If you do get stung, remove the stinger right away by scraping it sideways with a fingernail or the edge of a card, like a credit card. Acting quickly helps stop the venom sac from releasing more venom into your skin. One out of every three bites of food we eat relies on pollinators like the honeybee — so next time you see one buzzing through your garden, give it a little thanks!
