The month of February—and this month’s Elk Reflects honoring the legend Glenn Summers— has given me pause to reflect on what love truly means within a community. We often define it through respect, trust, responsibility, awareness, and commitment, but I believe it goes deeper than that. Community love is an inner sense of wholeness, intertwined with an outward connection to one another.

The Elk River is unique in the way it connects our individual hearts to the heartbeat of something larger. We often hear that a community is only as strong as its members—and along the River, you feel the truth of that every day. It’s not a polite smile or a passing “how are you?” It’s a genuine How have you been? and an earnest It’s so good to see you.

This is a place where love, acceptance, and a true sense of belonging live side by side. This month, as I read the Elk’s Students feature, I couldn’t help but beam with pride—these are our kids. I read Gabi and Laura’s articles, where they faithfully share their knowledge and expertise with us each month. And when I look at the local businesses featured in our Valentine’s article, I’m reminded of just how far we’ve come since the Flood of 2016 knocked us back to square one.

And yet, here we are—stronger than ever. Resilient, they say. Perhaps. But I believe it’s more than that. This community is a transformative force, one that fosters connection, compassion, and a kind of love you won’t find anywhere else. It’s not just a town—it’s home. And that is the true meaning of hometown.

As we celebrate February, the month of love, I hope we all take a moment to acknowledge the Elk River and feel gratitude for this thriving community of which we are each an essential part. May we always be the spirit that draws people together. Because there truly is no place like home…on the Elk River.

Simple to make and absolutely delicious, this strawberry filling is as versatile as it is irresistible. I whipped it up as a topping for a no-bake cheesecake for our Valentine’s Day dinner, and it was an instant hit. In fact, it was so good that “Low” kept sneaking spoonfuls straight from the pot—I finally had to put a stop to it so we’d still have some left for dessert! This recipe is a wonderful way to use strawberries, whether

• 1 C water

• 3 T cornstarch

• 1 C sugar

fresh or frozen. It doubles beautifully as a quick jam for biscuits or waffles at brunch, an ice cream topping, or even a sweet dip for pretzels. And don’t overlook it warm, straight off the stove, spooned over ice cream—pure comfort in a bowl. With so many delicious uses, this easy strawberry treat is one you’ll find yourself making again and again. Best of all, it can be frozen and saved for later, making it just as convenient as it is tasty.

DIRECTIONS

• 2 ½ C diced strawberries

• 1 t lemon juice - optional

PREP 15-20 MIN

STEP 1 In a saucepan, whisk water and cornstarch together over low heat.

STEP 2 Add sugar and strawberries and turn up the heat to med/low. Cook and stir until thickened (about 10 mins). NOTE: You can always add the lemon juice if you desire; optional.

STEP 3 Let cool and use as jam, filling, topping etc. or put in containers and freeze.

Young Staley, daughter of Gina Young of Clendenin, is making an impact on a national scale while staying true to her local roots. Petco Love, a leading national nonprofit dedicated to improving the lives of pets and the people who love them, has announced Chelsea as its new President, effective December 17.

Chelsea currently resides in San Antonio, Texas, where she has lived for the past five years alongside her four beloved dogs. Before taking her passion nationwide, she served our community close to home as Executive Director

of the Kanawha-Charleston Humane Association, where her leadership and commitment to animal welfare were widely recognized.

Petco Love announced the appointment following the retirement of longtime President Susanne Kogut, who has led the organization since 2013. During her tenure, Kogut significantly expanded Petco Love’s reach and impact, overseeing hundreds of millions of dollars invested in lifesaving initiatives and launching innovative programs such as Petco Love Lost, a free national platform helping reunite families with missing pets.

Elk River Living pauses to reflect and to honor the life of a true Elk River legend, Glenn Summers, who passed away on December 30, 2025, following a courageous battle with cancer.

Glenn wore many titles throughout his life—friend, fire chief, surveyor, church leader, Mason, Shriner, community leader, devoted father and grandfather, and the beloved husband of Mayor Kay Summers—but above all, he was a steadfast champion of the Elk River and the Town of Clendenin he loved so deeply.

Glenn’s pride in his hometown was unmatched, and his commitment to serving others never wavered. He was a man who believed in rolling up his sleeves, building bridges, and making things better—not for recognition, but because it was the right thing to do. His influence could be felt across the riverbanks and far beyond, in the lives he touched and the progress he helped shape. Until his final days, Glenn remained dedicated to making a difference, leaving behind a legacy rooted in service, compassion, and love for community.

But here’s the thing about legacy: it’s about more than wealth or accomplishments. It’s about ensuring that the path you’ve walked continues to inspire and guide others in the future.”

As we remember Glenn Summers, may we also carry forward the values he lived by—looking out for one another, showing up when it matters, and giving back to the place we call home. How truly blessed we are to have shared our community and our lives with a man of such character and heart.

Our thoughts and prayers are with his wife Kay; his children, Glenn Austin II (Suzanne) and Carrie Dysart (Trevor); and his cherished granddaughters, Lauren, Elisabeth, Caroline, Tatum, and Harper who were the light of his life.

Obituary

Glenn Austin Summers, 82, of Clendenin, West Virginia passed away peacefully on December 30, 2025, surrounded by his family and his Pastor by his side. Glenn will be remembered for his warm smile, caring blue eyes, and the deep love he had for his family, friends, community, and God. His presence brought comfort and joy to everyone who knew him, and his kindness and generosity touched countless lives. Born on August 21, 1943, in Charleston, West Virginia, Glenn lived a life dedicated to family, service, and community.

He was preceded in death by his father, Beverly Austin Summers; mother, Margaret Alice Gwinn Summers; and infant sister, Beverly Gwinn Summers.

Glenn was a proud Eagle Scout and a 1961 graduate of Clendenin High School. He later earned his degree from West Virginia State College and was a proud member of the West Virginia Air National Guard. A lifelong member of Clendenin United Methodist Church, Glenn’s faith guided his actions and his commitment to helping others. On September 1, 1967, Glenn married the love of his life, Kay Martin Summers, and together they built a family rooted in love and laughter. He is survived by his wife Kay, his son, Glenn Austin Summers II and wife Suzanne of Pinch, WV; daughter, Carrie Anne Dysart and husband Trevor of Pinch, WV; and five cherished granddaughters: Lauren Hope, Elisabeth Anne, and Caroline Lee Dysart; Tatum Reese Young; Harper Gwinn Summers; and his beloved dog/companion Gert.

Glenn’s life was marked by extraordinary service and leadership. He served as Fire Chief and Board President of the Clendenin Volunteer Fire Department and as Treasurer of the Kanawha County Emergency Ambulance Authority. His dedication extended to his Masonic and Shrine affiliations as well: he served as Past Master of Clendenin Lodge #126, member of the Scottish Rite Temple, Past Potentate and was the sitting Treasurer of the Beni Kedem Shrine, and member of the Royal Order of Jesters 111 Court. He also served as President of the West Virginia Real Estate Appraisers Board.

Glenn embodied the values of brotherhood and charity throughout his life and cherished the lifelong friendships he forged. Beyond his titles, Glenn was known for his generosity, quick wit, and unwavering commitment to his community. He loved sharing stories, watching the Herbert Hoover Huskies and the students of the Elk River community, mentoring others, and spending time with his family, especially his granddaughters, who were his pride and joy.

A celebration of life was held on Monday, January 5, 2026, at Clendenin United Methodist Church. Friends and family were invited to honor Glenn’s remarkable legacy along with his family with the Rev. Stewart Cottrell officiating.

ELK RIVER TRAIL FOUNDATION TO LAUNCH FAÇADE MINI GRANT PROGRAM FOR CLAY & CLENDENIN AREAS

The Elk River Trail Foundation is excited to announce the upcoming launch of its Façade Mini Grant Program, created to help business and property owners enhance the outdoor appearance of their buildings and boost economic growth in local Trail Towns along the Elk River Trail and Elk River Water Trail.

The program, which aims to encourage revitalization and tourism by supporting exterior improvements to commercial buildings, is a collaboration with the Braxton County Commission and Braxton County Economic Development Authority. Braxton County is operating the program in and around the trail towns of Sutton and Gassaway, and the Foundation is handling the program in and around the trail towns of Clay and Clendenin. Through this initiative, eligible business owners may receive certain architectural design services and will then become eligible for a mini-grant to work with a contractor to complete updates. Costs exceeding the mini-grant amount will be the responsibility of the business owner.

Eligible improvements include new signage, painting, window and door repairs, lighting, accessibility upgrades, and other enhancements that improve the appearance and character of downtown areas.

“This program is about helping our Trail Towns put their best face forward,” said Madison Stone, Executive Director of the Elk River Trail Foundation. “By investing in the look and feel of our downtowns, we’re also investing in community pride, tourist attraction, and local business growth.”

GENTLE GIANTS: A LIFETIME WITH HORSES

Horses have always been a meaningful part of our lives, woven into our family history and daily work. My grandfather relied on work ponies, and Frank received his first pony on his very first birthday. When we married more than 42 years ago, Frank already owned a pair of Belgian Draft Horses. From that moment on, horses became central to our way of life. Over the years, our horses have helped with everything from spreading manure and plowing fields to cultivating the garden and logging firewood. Beyond the work, we’ve enjoyed countless wagon rides and horse events through

the West Virginia Draft Horse & Mule Association, of which we have been proud members for many years. The Belgian Draft Horse—also known as the Brabant—is a massive and powerful breed originating in Belgium, descended from medieval warhorses. In 1904, the Belgian government showcased these impressive animals at the St. Louis World’s Fair, where they quickly gained popularity in the United States. Imports slowed during World War I but resumed in the 1930s, laying the foundation for what would become the American Belgian Draft Horse.

Through selective breeding in the U.S., American Belgians developed a taller, lighter build and are most often chestnut in color with flaxen (blonde) manes and tails. Known for their incredible strength, calm temperament, and willingness to work, these horses are widely used for farm work and showing. Their gentle nature has earned them the fitting nickname “Gentle Giants.”

Horse height is measured from the ground to the top of the withers, or shoulder blades, and is recorded in hands.

One hand equals four inches. Our horse Jake measured 18.2 hands—meaning 72 inches plus an additional two inches—for a total height of 6 feet 2 inches. Jed measures 17.3 hands, standing 5 feet 11 inches tall.

According to the Guinness World Records, the tallest living horse ever recorded was a Belgian Draft Horse named Big Jake. In 2010, he stood an astonishing 20.2¾ hands—6 feet 10¾ inches tall—and weighed approximately 2,500 pounds. Born in Nebraska in 2001, Big Jake lived in Wisconsin until his passing in 2021. He remains the tallest living horse on record. The tallest horse in history was Sampson, a Shire Draft Horse born in England in 1846, who stood 21.25 hands tall and weighed over 3,300 pounds. Any horse measuring under 14.2 hands is classified as a pony.

Our last two pairs of Belgian Draft Horses came from Amish country in Ohio. For more than 20 years, we attended the Mid-Ohio Draft Horse Sale alongside

friends from the WV Draft Horse & Mule Association. Held each March and October, this week-long event offers everything horse-related imaginable—nearly 2,000 horses, from ponies to massive drafts, along with wagons, buggies, harnesses, saddles, and more. Belgians are sold on the final day, as the Amish often favor Belgian and Percheron horses for field work.

Since Frank’s retirement, we’ve had more time to volunteer at the Barbour County Fair, where the WV Draft Horse & Mule Association sponsors draft horse events throughout the week. We give wagon rides, host demonstrations, teach children about horses, and organize horse pulls. Most of all, we treasure the time spent with friends who have become our horse family— and with the Gentle Giants that have given us a lifetime of memories.

She is a nationally certified athletic trainer and obtained specialty certification in Mechanical Diagnosis and Therapy in 2007. She is a proud HHHS alumnus.

Lower temperatures can reduce circulation, increase tightness, and make it harder to stay active. The good news? A few tips from your local physical therapist can help you stay comfortable and moving all winter long.

Common reasons joints ache more when the temperature drops:

• Muscles tighten in response to the cold.

• Reduced activity levels can lead to weakness and loss of mobility.

• Joints may stiffen secondary to changes in barometric pressure.

• Cold sensitivity may increase nerve related pain.

• Thicker joint fluid, your joints natural lubricant, becomes thicker and less effective in the cold resulting in decreased mobility.

Physical Therapy Tips to Reduce Pain

1. Keep moving! Low impact activities (yoga, bike, walk) are more forgiving on achy joints. Take frequent breaks, but move often during the day to help prevent stiffness/tightness. Try to avoid long periods of inactivity.

2. Keep warm. Proper warm up is beneficial. Warm showers or heating pads are an easy way to increase circulation prior to activity. Warming up indoors and dressing in layers are also helpful when it is cold.

3. Just breathe! Deep breaths help improve circulation (heat) and promote relaxation (decrease tension) which can assist with decreasing muscle guarding that causes pain.

4. Stretch and strengthening. Gentle stretching improves flexibility and circulation. While strengthening supports joints and reduces strain. Both of these are essential to keep pain levels in check.

Movement is medicine, regardless of the weather. Staying active, warm, and following an exercise program can help reduce pain and improve function all winter long.
