Hello & Welcome Back!
W
hen we first thought about publishing a magazine, wait, let me rephrase that, when my little brother Dave first believed in me and urged me to start a magazine, it was an exciting but frightening venture. Teamed with our talented son, Josh, (who does our magnificent magazine design and layout) and my supportive husband, Ken (bookkeeper, emergency photographer and anything else that is needed), Elk River Living did a soft launch last December with our first issue. It was 28 pages with 20 some ads. We are so happy to say after 12 issues, we are now at 56 pages and over 70 ads! Nikki Bowman Mills, HHHS alumnus and editor of WV Living magazine, told me, “You need to be proud to put your name on whatever you do.” It was the best advice I’ve ever received.
My favorite part is talking with everyone and truly feeling like I’m going home in every issue. In Clendenin everyone knows me or one of my five brothers or sisters or my mom and dad. In Ekview, I am known as Nate, Josh, and Julie’s mom. It’s where we go to church, shop, and have raised our children and now watch our grandchildren grow. It’s an awesome feeling. There isn’t a day that my heart isn’t touched by the wonderful people and businesses on the Elk River.
The great part is we hear the same thing back from all of our readers saying how much they love the feeling of coming home in our magazine. After some reflection, I think it is because we are committed to recognizing the goodness on the river. I graduated from WVU with a major in Journalism. I learned “to write material consisting of the direct presentation of facts or events with an attempt to minimize analysis or interpretation.” Translated: it’s not my opinion that matters. It is not a sounding board for my thoughts and interpretation. This magazine is designed to uplift and inspire. And because of all of you, I am uplifted and inspired right back.
We would like to thank everyone for their support. All of our advertisers are wonderful and we are thankful that your ads enable us to print more copies each publication to share with our Elk River family and friends, no matter where you are located. Richards just celebrated a special anniversary. It has been three years since they re-opened in their new location at Elk Office Center (the old Big Chimney Elementary) since The Flood of 2016. Their former office (aka Mountain State Spine & Health) was located under the Dollar General at Big Chimney and had over nine feet of muddy flood water. Dr. Glenn Goldfarb and Dr. Asif Rahman generously offered Dr. Richards a temporary location at 2345 Chesterfield Drive in Charleston so that he could immediately continue to take care of his patients. He really never stopped seeing patients. They were at the Chesterfield location from July to October, and on October 17, 2016, they returned to the Elk River in their new office location at Elk Office Center.

Dr. Richards is a board certified physician and accepts patients ranging from newborn to end of life. Dr. Richards said, “We take pride in being an office that provides quality medical care for the entire family.” Their office has proudly served the residents of Elkview and surrounding areas for over 30 years. Dr. Richard’s office accepts most insurances, and for patients with no insurance, they offer discounted office visits. Their office has an on-site lab through Charleston Area Medical Center LabWorks. The on-site Lab is available during normal business hours, Monday-Thursday, from 8:00 AM - 4:30 PM. It can also be used for labs ordered from another physician for current patients. Their office offers annual wellness exams for all ages, sports physicals, same day sick visits, joint steroid injections, joint aspirations, nebulizer treatments, pap smear, ear irrigation, minor surgeries, pulse oximetry in office and overnight testing, EKG and Holter heart monitor recordings and yearly flu vaccines. Appointments are available between 8:00 AM - 4:30 PM and walk in’s are welcome between 9-11 AM and 1-3 PM. The office also has a registered nurse on staff to help answer your medical questions. PAELIN’S FAVORITE TORTELLINI SOUP
hether it is soup and salad night during the week or a bowl of soup to go with leftover Thanksgiving turkey sandwiches, Gabi Strickland Walker has the perfect recipe! Her Tortellini Soup is a family favorite (especially with daughter, Paelin, age 8) and it is so easy. Gabi says her sister loves this soup also, and she adds her own special twist and sprinkles shredded mozzarella cheese on top of each bowl of soup and then puts it under the broiler to melt. Here’s What You’ll Need

2T olive oil 1/2 small sweet onion - diced 2 lg garlic cloves - minced 2 C chicken stock 1 1/2 C milk

2 C half & half 1/2 t salt 1/2 t pepper 1 t Italian seasoning 2 - 10.75oz cans Campbell's Tomato Soup 1/2 C sun dried tomatoes - chopped* (*or 2T sun dried tomato paste, which we actually prefer!)

In a large pot over medium heat, add olive oil and onions and cook until onions begin to sweat and get translucent. Add garlic and stir, cook until garlic begins to turn golden - Don't BURN! Add chicken stock and stir, add all remaining ingredients - except tortellini - stirring until well combined. Let Soup come to a boil and reduce heat to med/low and let simmer 10 mins. I
f you haven’t tried Emma J. (Jeannie) Ladd Bird’s wonderful assortment of Dirty Bird Handcrafted Soaps, you are missing a special treat. Her collection includes a variety of custom-made cold and hot process soaps, with organic essential oils and no artificial colorings. She makes soaps that appeal to those who need more
moisturizing qualities as well as recipes for men, natural dog shampoo, soaps for skin conditions and exfoliating soaps. Jeannie said, “I grow my own herbs and love adding fresh mint, sage, rosemary, turmeric and lavender to create different soaps.” She uses coconut milk, goat milk, local beeswax, local honey (Butterworth hives), olive oil, sweet almond oil, and shea butter just to name a few. There are no detergents in any of her products. She also has unscented soaps and soaps for sensitive skin types. She said, “One of my favorites is the sweet orange and carrot juice soap because I love how it makes your skin feel. Beta carotene is also very good for the skin.” Dirty Bird also has a variety of exfoliation soaps, including oatmeal soaps and coffee bean scrubs. She has soaps

Jeannie explained that she is able to customize soaps for special requests, depending on whether you want more exfoliating or moisturizing and you can select the scent you prefer! “The moisturizing soaps are very popular along with the exfoliating, and all of our soaps are very gentle,” she said. She also makes shampoo and body bars which are the most popular with men. All of Dirty Bird soaps are either cold process or hot process soaps. These soaps require curing (airing out so that the moisture evaporates) for at least a month. If someone wants customized bars for a special order, she needs a month to six weeks to allow a good cure time so the soap will last longer and hold up well. She also keeps her most popular soaps on hand such as creamy lemon shea butter, lavender goat’s milk, sweet mint and coffee bean scrub, goat milk and lemongrass, honey lavender beeswax, oatmeal tea tree and peppermint with vitamin E, and carrot juice soaps.

It is Jeannie’s unique nutrition and science background that is evident in all of her soaps. She graduated from

Marshall University with both a Bachelor and a Master’s degree in Nutrition. She explained that most of her life she has worked as a dietitian. Senior Airman Isaiah Garritt Barido, from the 388th Aircraft Maintenance Squadron based at Hill Air Force Base, Utah, deployed to Al Dhafra Air Base in the United Arab Emirates in April of 2019 to support the Air Force’s F-35A Lightning II’s first Middle East deployment. The F-35A is the world’s most advanced multi-role fighter aircraft. This is SrA Barido’s first overseas deployment since he took his oath of enlistment in August of 2016. his month ERL would like to recognize three outstanding Clendenin natives who are proudly serving in our US military. Senior Airman Isaiah Garritt Barido and his brother, Specialist Dalton Daniel Blackwell, will return from deployment this winter. Their brother A1C Andrew Michael Barido, is currently serving in the US Air Force in Japan. Their parents, Michael and Georgia Blackwell Barido (from Clendenin), now from Kaysville, UT, are excited to celebrate the safe return of their two sons to American soil. They are also looking forward to visiting their son, Michael, in Japan this spring.

Dalton and Garritt’s eldest brother, Andrew, is also currently serving in the US Air Force. A1C Andrew Michael Barido and his devoted wife, Elina, are currently stationed at Yokota Air Force Base in the city of Fussa in Western Tokyo. Andrew took his oath of service with the USAF
on the same day as his brother Garritt in August of 2016 and was originally stationed in Little Rock, Arkansas until March of 2019. Andrew is a Guidance and Control Specialist with the 374th Aircraft Maintenance Squadron Ronin Elite Aircraft Maintenance Unit in which he conducts inspections on C-130J Super Hercules Aircrafts. He is assigned to his mission in Japan until 2021.
His parents, family, and friends want to thank them for their service to our great country. “We honor them as they continue to represent our hometown of Clendenin as a US Air Force Airman and US Army Soldier. Welcome home Garritt and Dalton! We are all so proud of all of our sons,” said Georgia.

at Fort Carson, Colorado is coming home from his 2nd tour of duty. SPC Blackwell was deployed to Camp Buehring Army Base in Udari, Kuwait in March of 2019 to support the Army’s M1 Abrams Tanks. Camp Buehring is in the middle of the Kuwaiti desert, just 25 miles from the Iraqi border. His team conducts various warrior skills and training tests all while temperatures often exceed 100 degrees. Since his oath of enlistment in March of 2017 SPC Blackwell was also deployed to Poland.

f you have ever wanted to know about beekeeping, the Kanawha Valley Beekeepers Association is a great place to start! Their association is dedicated to educating people in the art of beekeeping and to promoting activities for beekeepers and the community. Their recent field event was held on September 28 on Weeping Willow Lane at Elkview at the bee yard on Larry Morris’ property. He maintains the bee yard for the organization and also sells bees (nukes), honey, bee signs, bee equipment, and bee paintings.
Additionally, he paints beautiful, assorted scenes on the hives. Indeed, Larry is a man of many talents. He is a member of the Kanawha Valley Beekeepers Association and the Jackson County Beekeepers Association. Larry has captured 10-12 bee swarms this year. It has been his hobby for the last four years. He really enjoys the KV Beekeepers Association field days. “I go through the hives, explaining that you need to make sure there is a Queen bee by checking for eggs or you may actually see the Queen in the hive. If there are eggs, then you know a Queen has been there within the last three days.” Larry said, “I also explain mites and treatments as well.” If you are interested in starting a bee yard, Larry said, “You will need to have the proper equipment to get started as well as a few key elements of beekeeping to assist you in keeping your colony strong and productive.” If you are a beginning beekeeper or if you need advice on an existing bee yard, contact Larry at 304.552.5144. He will be happy to help you with the proper equipment required for starting a colony of honey bees as well as the personal equipment such as protection clothing, hive tool, smoker, and a good reference book on beginning beekeeping.

ADDRESSING THE NEED
Vision Appalachia works with local community leaders, businesses, and pastors to help with numerous building, food, and relief projects. One of their projects has been to help sponsor annual eye clinics in Clay County, with Dr. Robert Prazer of Pittsburgh, PA (founder of Vision Care from the Heart) and Dr. Frank Villa of Lynchburg, VA. Jesse said, “More than 300 people were able to receive free exams and 250 people were given new prescription glasses.” They are working to continue such services and hopefully will have their third annual eye clinic this spring. Another one of their projects was to help with major improvements to the Clay County High School cafeteria and donate school supplies. Additionally, Vision Appalachia helped establish Marissa’s Closet, a fully stocked food pantry at Clay County High School. Their goal is to keep the pantry stocked 12 months a year to meet the needs of the community. Vision Appalachia has also hosted hundreds of kid’s summer sports camps and developed various school programs. Jesse said, “We’ve watched over 100 kids surrender their lives through the ministry over the
past 7 years.” Currently they are working with Clay County High School’s Panthers Helping Panthers program to host motivational and educational speaker, Bill Saunders, who will address the faculty, staff and students on love, dignity, respect and being helpful. Home improvement projects are another area of focus for Vision Appalachia. Jesse said, “In our 7 years of service, we’ve successfully completed 71 significant home improvement projects for those
in need in central Appalachia. Over 130 volunteers worked on these sites this summer.” Jesse said, “We help people have better home situations, including windows, roofs, decks, porches, steps, and we even helped construct a swinging suspension bridge.” He further stated that they, along with Dan Carper, a local carpenter from Looneyville, were able to provide a much-needed room addition for a family in Roane County who had adopted six kids. Also, they have recently roofed two houses in Kanawha City and in Lizemore. Every year Vision Appalachia sponsors their “Picnic in the Parking Lot” and invites residents of the Elk River communities to enjoy free food, live music and activities that meet spiritual and physical needs. This past summer they had between 400-500 people

esse and Debbie (Cavanaugh) Boggs were born and raised in West Virginia and they know firsthand the need for bringing help and hope to Central Appalachia. They both are 1973 Herbert Hoover High School graduates and lived at Elkview before they relocated to their current home in Pittsburgh, PA. It is their roots and love for the Elk River region that inspired them to form Vision Appalachia, an organization dedicated to contributing to the spiritual and essential needs of Clay, Kanawha, Braxton, Roane and Nicholas counties.

Next year the Picnic in the Parking Lot event will be held on Thursday evening, the week of June 14, 2020, when volunteers from more than 10 churches and 8 states arrive for the week to help with projects. Through fundraising events and donations, Vision Appalachia hopes to raise the physical and financial resources they need to cover operating expenses for 2019. Jesse said, “These activities provide much-needed spiritual, physical, and educational relief to the community.” Vision Appalachia is also in need of a warehouse structure for housing construction materials and nonperishable food items and an enclosed trailer for moving supplies and traveling to work sites. Having these two resources will allow them to function more efficiently and serve more needs of the communities.

This event was sponsored on October 15 by the Clendenin United Methodist Church and the Fix Em Clinic, a program of Charleston Regional Spay Neuter Center, Inc. based in Charleston, WV. Clendenin residents attend the Pet Vaccination Clinic/CUMC Event.
Amber Costello, Executive Director of The Fix Em Clinic, said their clinic is a non-profit organization that sees between 40-50 animals per day, another 30 for wellness appointments, and between 70-80 for spaying/ neutering. Amber said they opened for business in Kanawha County in February 2008. She also added that they have the lowest price in the State for spaying and neutering. The Fix Em Clinic mobile van allows them to travel and provide wellness services to communities in Kanawha County. There is no charge for remote wellness visits and their vaccines and treatments are offered at discount prices. They have a full pharmacy and can make referrals for pets who need them. They also maintain a Pet Food Bank as well for cat and dog food.

When you talk about tradition, no one understands it more than The Clendenin Community Chorus. These talented, local musicians have been performing Handel’s Christmas oratorio, “The Messiah” annually since 1938. This year, the 81st annual presentation of Handel’s Messiah is scheduled for Sunday, December 1st at 3:00 PM at the United Methodist Church in Clendenin. The Clendenin Community Chorus was founded by John R. Barnes who was the band director at Clendenin High School and later at Herbert Hoover High School. He was also the choir director at the First Methodist Church in Clendenin and directed The Messiah performance in Clendenin for many years. H. G. Young, III is the current director and was preceded by Blaine Hess, Lois Wygal, Charles Miller, and Mary Lou Vealey. Joan Parker has been singing in The Messiah since she was 12 years old. She said, “When I was young, we did not have a school choir. My first exposure to music was through Lois Wygal, who directed our church choir at the Clendenin Advent Church. For over 40 years, I have returned to sing in The Messiah whenever I have lived in this area.” She sings alto and soprano, or sometimes both. She said, “Depending on how many vocalists we have, I can sing whatever part we need.” Joan loves that generations of families have sung in the Clendenin Messiah performance. Elk River native, Blaine Hess, has returned many times in the past to direct the performance and to sing the solo. H. G. Young, III, another Clendenin native and a professor at WVU/Parkersburg Campus’ music department, has returned to direct The Messiah for over 25 years. Also, Mike Barnhouse, former music teacher in Putnam County and the current organist/accompanist at Forrest Burdette Memorial United Methodist Church in Hurricane, comes home to Clendenin to play the piano for the performances. “It is a wonderful experience to return to our Elk River hometown and sing with so many family and friends,” said Joan. This time-honored tradition is a favorite in Clendenin and the surrounding areas. H.G. said, “The year we were able to perform back in the church after The Flood of 2016 is a performance I will always remember. The church was damaged and repairs were completed just in time to have the performance.” If you or one of your friends would like to participate, you are welcome to attend the rehearsals and be in this wonderful holiday performance. Rehearsals will be on Sunday, November 17 & 24 at 3:00 pm. The dress rehearsal will be on Saturday, November 30th at 7:00 p.m. All rehearsals will be held at Clendenin United Methodist Church at 121 Koontz Ave. in Clendenin.

here is nothing like a festival and a parade to bring people out to celebrate, whatever the occasion. This year the annual Fall Festival, hosted by the GVWC-WV Clendenin Woman’s Club, had an amazing turnout, despite the 93 degree temperature!

HONORING HHHS TEACHER, RICHARD PARSONS The future of the world is in my classroom today
H
erbert Hoover High School teacher, Richard Parsons, is an inspiration to his classroom. He was selected as a state winner in the Voya Unsung Heroes Program and was awarded $2,000 to further develop his classroom project. The Voya Unsung Heroes Award Program is a national program that recognizes and rewards excellence in 100 schools in America. Mr. Parsons said, “Our project consisted of building and maintaining a school garden. This project was student-led and I only offered guidance when needed.” His environmental science class started the flower seeds in December and the vegetable seeds inside the classroom in February. The students collected soil samples and tested it for nutrients in the soil.
If nutrients were needed, the students added them to the soil. They were also responsible for tilling up the outside garden space. Mr. Parsons said the students moved the plants to the outside garden last spring and were actually able to harvest some of their early vegetables before school ended last June. Their produce was distributed to the school’s cafeteria and the foods class. The environmental science students also packaged their lettuce and cherry tomatoes in baggies and added them to the local Backpack Blessings weekly, food-distribution program for underprivileged families. “It was nice for the students to receive fresh vegetables along with other food items and students were even asking for more. They loved receiving the fresh produce!” said Mr. Parsons.
The class raised yellow and zucchini squash, green peppers, lettuce and cherry tomatoes. “We had over 80 cherry tomatoes from just one plant,” said Mr. Parsons. They even made salsa in class one day from their harvest. The class started the seeds inside in plugs in the spring. Mr. Parsons has a hydroponic bed in his classroom. He hopes to expand their garden this next year. With their award money, Mr. Parsons said, “We will be able to buy gardening supplies including seeds, gardening tools (hoes, shovels and rakes), gloves and fencing.” He emphasized that students learn “life-skill lessons that they can use throughout life.”

This is just a first step for a project that will be used for many years to come. Mr. Parsons said, “New environmental students will be introduced to the garden each year.” It is especially heartwarming to think about the young kids in the Backpack Blessing program now. Mr. Parsons said, “One day those kids will be at the high school involved in the garden that was possible through this grant.”

Queen Presley, HHHS Homecoming 2019 This year Herbert Hoover High School’s Homecoming Queen was senior, Presley McGee. Presley is a member of the HHHS softball and volleyball team. She is an All-State pitcher for the softball team and was awarded a scholarship to Alderson Broaddus College (AB) where she will continue to play softball next year. She will graduate with honors and plans on majoring in Elementary Education at Alderson Broaddus. Her parents are Dan and April McGee of Clendenin; siblings are Ryan Shamblin and Alivia McGee. Her maternal grandparents are Gay and Brenda Vance from Clendenin and her paternal grandparents are the late Margaret Wesolowski from St. Albans and Glenn McGee of Post Falls, Idaho.
