This month, ELR is proud to feature four new businesses: Appalachian Auto Repair, owner Patrick Drake; Keep You in Stitches, owner Donna Belcher; and Blue Creek Blues and Flat Hollow Farm, owner Liz Wilkes. Also, Taylor Made Farms, owners Tammy and Steve Taylor, has just completed their first wedding season and they have an exciting October planned with numerous events including the Fall Harvest Market, Sip and Paint, and Haunted Barn. Even more, they are kicking off a new ATV Trail by next Memorial Day! It is always exciting to see new businesses in our community. It was inspiring to see another successful Elk River Clean Up in Clendenin. More than 351 tires and over a ton of trash were removed from the river. Plans are already being made for another clean up next year from Queen Shoals to the Clendenin Water Plant where there are another estimated 350 tires that need to be removed. Also featured this month is Bill Rogers and friends who traveled to Wisconsin to see their good friend, Jake Melton. When we talk about the bond in our Elk River community, this is a perfect example. Take some time to relax and enjoy the beautiful month of October before the holidays and cold weather are upon us. I invite you to visit neighboring Clay County and see the Buffalo Creek Rail and ride the excursion ride or the pedal cars or both. For those that don’t know, the Buffalo Creek Rail also has a lovely five-bedroom lodge with a large common area, dining room, kitchenette, and a large, inviting back deck. It is a great destination for a weekend getaway or events. The Alex Miller tragedy in Roane/Clay was a reminder to me that, in the words of Jake Rollyson, “Enjoy the day, God gave you a gift.”

Blue Creek/Sanderson’s Hidden Gem Now to really elevate your life and make it mean more than it ever could, meet the Australian Cattle Dog. - Liz Wilkes
BLUE CREEK BLUES If you are looking for a true blue friend, you should check out the amazing Australian Cattle Dog at Blue Creek Blues on Flat Hollow Farm in Quick. Liz Wilkes owns Blue Creek Blues and is Elk River’s own Australian Cattle Dog Breeder. Liz said, “The Australian Cattle Dogs have the nickname, Blue Heeler. Blue because their skin is blue and Heeler because they go for the heels of cows and people and anything they want to herd.” She also explained that the mother dog trains her puppies on the necessary moves to take down a cow and how to come a heeler. Blue Creek Blues’ Australian Cattle Dogs were specially selected from several cattle farms and imported to Quick. Liz said, “The disposition of a Blue Heeler is Heaven sent. If I were to compare their love to something, it would be the love of a mother to her child.” Liz also said this awesome breed of dog is ‘one of the smartest people I know’. Liz said, “To spread the love and joy is a whole-hearted passion and mission of Blue Creek Blues. We simply feel honored to be a part of the herd.”
FLAT HOLLOW FARM Liz also owns Flat Hollow Farm which, in addition to being the home of Blue Creek Blues, is also a secluded and private campground. Liz used to visit her family in West Virginia during her youth and loved the mountains. When she graduated from the University of West Florida with her degree in business management, she returned to WV, this time to purchase her own farm and call it home. Flat Hollow Farm has ten primitive camp sites which include a fire pit, tent site, and cooking utensils. She stated that visitors can ride their ATVs or hike to any of the primitive campsites. Liz said, “The cost is $10 per person, per night. Many people like to come here and park safely, set up their camp site, and then go to Sanderson to ride on the 70,000 acres of open trails for ATV riders. Just bring a tent or hammock and some meats for grilling!” Next spring Flat Hollow Farm will offer a mountain biking trail system as well. Liz said she is finalizing the single track mountain bike trails now and by next spring they will specialize in downhill mountain biking trails. She is an experienced mountain bike rider herself and has ridden on all of the WV State Park mountain biking trails. Liz said, “Flat Hollow Farm is a little gem 17 miles from the State Capitol to our driveway. Here’s What You’ll Need

MIXING THE FILLING
CRUST: 1 (18 1/4 oz pkg) Spice Cake mix 1 egg FILLING: 1 (8oz) cream cheese - softened 1 (15oz) can pumpkin purée (unsweetened) 1 t vanilla 1 stick butter - soften 1 (16oz) box powdered sugar 1/2 t cinnamon Preheat oven to 350
Combine the cake mix, egg, and butter and mix well with an electric mixer. Pat the mixture into the bottom of prepared baking dish.
To make the filling: In a large bowl, beat the cream cheese, pumpkin, and softened butter until smooth. Add the eggs and vanilla and beat together. Next, add the powdered sugar and cinnamon and mix well.

FILLING ADDED TO CRUST Spread pumpkin mixture over cake batter and bake for 45-55 min. (NOTE: Mine usually takes about 5557mins, but make sure not to overbake as the center should be a little gooey.)

Tammy and Steve Taylor, owners, have a variety of packages for events and they are now accepting bookings for 2020. Guests can rent the farm Friday through Sunday for $1800 or rent what they want separately to create their perfect destination event. Their newest is the Elopement or Small Wedding Package costing $600. This event includes pre-wedding (dressing, hair, makeup, etc.) access in the farmhouse, a 2-tier cake, photos up to 75 images, and a buffet for up to 25 people for 4 hours. Taylor Made Farms also has a complete array of silk flowers and decorations that can be rented for events. There is a turn-key wedding package for $8500 including photos, hair and makeup, bouquets, decorations, banquet, and the farmhouse from Wednesday through Sunday. “Everything except the bride, the dress, and the groom!, “ she said.
“The barn has several seating options available, including pews, benches, or table and chairs and can seat 125 guests. There is a 12 x 12 gazebo where the band or DJ normally sets up, a 30 x 30 dance floor and a 24 x 24 roofed pavilion,” Tammy mentioned. The food is set up in the pavilion and includes a
cake table, old whisky barrels for the drink stations, toasting goblets, cake plate and knife, and more. There is also the option of renting lovely mismatched antique china or paper plates. Tammy said, “The lovely, newly-renovated farmhouse was built in the 1800’s and has 5 bedrooms, 3 bathrooms, 2 kitchens, a den and living room, a laundry room and wrap around porches, complete with swings. Many people make a deposit and then make monthly payments. We try to work with our customers to make their events beautiful and stress free.” Their exciting new ATV trail will be available next Memorial Day. There will be a charge per vehicle and the option to rent the farmhouse or camp in the pasture. There will be 20 tent spaces available for rent.

Tammy said many of their guests bring their own ATVs, horses, etc. so that they can enjoy the trails during their stay at the farm. Weekend guests have access to the farm for the weekend which includes the firepit, hiking trails, ATV trails, and there is also kayaking nearby. CLENDENIN POLICE DEPARTMENT

ur Heroes this month are the new members of the Clendenin Police Department. Scott Lucas is the new Chief of Police for the Town of Clendenin. The officers include Marcus Pena (currently away on active military duty), Joshua Hurt, Justin Dennis, Tyler Americo, Matthew Queen, and Jason Mace.

Tyler Americo is an HHHS alumnus from the Elk River and graduated in Criminal Justice from WV State University before joining the department. Joshua Hurt is from Elkview and considers it an honor to work with the Town of Clendenin businesses and residents. Justin Dennis is from New Jersey and moved to West Virginia to be

closer to family. He previously worked at a West Virginia correctional facility. He then served active duty in the Army for four years as a Cavalry Scout. Justin said, “I’m honored to be a part of the Clendenin Police Department.” Mathew Queen was a police officer in the Town of Clendenin during the Flood of 2016. He lives in the Walton area with his lovely wife and three children. Jason Mace is originally from Charleston and now lives in Hurricane. He received his BA in Criminal Justice from Marshall University and has eight years of law enforcement experience. He is also a member of the Air National Guard. Chief Lucas, an Elkview resident, stated, “During
as a community, we will do just that. Working together on all levels; citizens, administration, police department, fire department, public works, etc., we will grow into something strong. A place where everyone feels safe. A place people want to visit. A place where families want to settle. A place that other small towns want to use as a model. But for it to work… we ALL must participate within our role.”

my first interview with Mayor Summers and the Town’s Council, I presented the concept of community policing. We had discussion about transparency, accountability and restructuring. Honestly, I was getting excited for the future of Clendenin even if I wasn’t the one to be chosen. Mayor Summers asked what I could bring to the Town with “Community Policing”. I was honest and said, I could bring absolutely nothing. But WE could bring something big. Together,

Michelle Martin, co- founder of Trash Your Kayak Cleanup Crew, said their group is open to anyone who is tired of seeing trash and tires in our beautiful West Virginia rivers and who wants to make a difference. Trash Your Kayak Cleanup Crew picks up trash and tires when they are out kayaking/ canoeing. They also help organize and partner with one-day clean-up events. Sponsors for this year’s Elk River Clean-Up included the Town of Clendenin, 25045--A New Clendenin, Inc., Yak House Rentals, University of Charleston, Smith’s FoodFair, REAP, Trash Your Kayak, Coop’s Customized T-Shirt Designs, Kanawha County Commission, Elk River Get-a-Way, Giovanni’s in Clendenin, and Cardinal Roasters. Volunteers arrived with kayaks, jon boats, a pontoon boat, and other equipment at the old
Smith’s FoodFair parking lot in Clendenin and pulled trash and tires from the river and river banks for several hours. Michelle said, “REAP provided equipment for winching the tires up the river bank, loading them into trucks, and hauling them off, and they also paid the landfill disposal fee for the tires. It is inspiring to see people caring for our rivers, picking up other people’s trash and being a part of Clendenin’s continued recovery from The Flood of 2016.”

t was exciting to see the volunteers at the Elk River Clean-Up event on Saturday, September 7, 2019. More than 30 people assembled in Clendenin at 9 am to “trash their kayaks,” including volunteers from the Trash Your Kayak Cleanup Crew, the Chemical City Rollergirls, the University of Charleston Women’s Lacrosse Team, the Clendenin Volunteer Fire Department, and other local volunteers. They were assisted by personnel and equipment from the West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection’s Rehabilitation Environmental Action Plan (REAP) program. Sure enough, by the end of the day, they had collected 351 tires and over a ton of trash from the Elk River from the Clendenin Bridge to the shoals above the DNR’s boat launch near the Clendenin Water Plant – a distance of only about 1.5 miles. REAP returned on September 9 and removed a submerged car from the river. REAP also collected another 15 tires single-handedly pulled from the river by local volunteer and dedicated kayaker Amber Birthisel.

You will see the 25045-A New Clendenin, Inc. group continue to be a part of this effort and others to enrich the lives of Elk River residents.” He added that “Volunteer efforts like this are a key component to making the Clendenin area a treasured destination when the new Elk River Trail opens next year and we cannot thank them enough for their hard work.” Michelle said next year the clean-up event is planning to go from Queen Shoals to the Clendenin Water Plant where there are another estimated 350 tires that need to be removed.
Michelle started Trash Your Kayak Cleanup Crew in 2016 and now has 479 members. They have removed over 3,000 tires and 3 tons of trash from West Virginia rivers. Team leaders for the Elk River Cleanup were Michelle Martin and Rick Ferris. Rick is a long time crew member and a valuable resource to the crew and the Town of Clendenin. He is the MBA Program Director at the School of Business and Leadership at the University of Charleston (UC). Rick said, “UC students on the experiential learning track have been working with the Town of Clendenin in identifying its residential, commercial and recreational assets and to develop a comprehensive community vision concerning future endeavors.”
Cardinal Roasters Bakery and Cafe owner, Rick Owens, helped provide homemade pepperoni rolls for the clean-up crew and volunteers and Giovanni’s in Clendenin, owner Shane Marcum, donated pizzas after the event at the Yak House. Coop’s Customized T-Shirt Designs printed t-shirts for the Elk River Clean Up Crew and Stella Gill, member of Trash Your Kayak Cleanup Crew, created the logo design. Additionally, 25045 – A New Clendenin, Inc., Smith’s FoodFair and Elk River Get-a-Way gave cash donations to support this event.

t is rare when one can enjoy nature’s beauty at its finest. The Buffalo Creek Trail in rural Clay County offers the opportunity to travel through six miles of breathtaking, secluded woodlands and listen to the magical sounds of nature. Autumn is an excellent time to see the gorgeous leaves and landscape along the trail. The Buffalo Creek Rail Ride offers several options to explore the trail. The trail is currently 12 miles round trip. Visitors can pedal rail bikes for the 12 miles or they can be towed up and ride back. At any time, visitors can be towed back as well. If you are age 10 or above and under 250 pounds, the rail bikes are an excellent way to experience the trails. Unfortunately, the Flood of 2016 washed out a bridge on the trail, but when it is replaced, hopefully no later than 2021, the trail with rails will run 18.2 miles to Widen and will be the longest trail with rails in the United States! Also, if you prefer not to pedal, there is an excursion ride available that visitors can enjoy. The rail bikes and the excursion rail cars travel together, so family and friends can still be together regardless of which option they choose. Whether you just want to take in the beautiful landscape or fish for trout in the stocked Buffalo Creek, or both, the trail rides let you determine your own activities. There are plenty of scheduled stops where visitors can explore and truly enjoy the peace and tranquility of the trail. One stop you will want to make is the waterfall at Devil’s Sawmill up Buffalo Creek. When the sun shines on the spray, some people say they can see what looks like the face of
peace within.” -Fjella World the devil, which is how it got its name. Why stop with just a day trip? The J.G. Bradley Lodge is located beside the Buffalo Creek Recreational Trail and offers visitors accommodations for a wonderful weekend getaway. It is also a perfect location for reunions, parties or weddings.There are five comfortable bedrooms (handicapped room available) flanked by a spacious common area with a large stone fireplace, a kitchenette and dining room, and a large creek-side deck to enjoy the outdoors. There is also a campground adjacent to the lodge with opportunities for biking, fishing, swimming, horseback or ATV riding, and hiking. The campground has a bathhouse with two separate sections that include two showers and two toilets in each section. The Buffalo Creek Recreational Trail will take reservations through December, weather permitting. Visitors can call 304.618.7992 to reserve their choice of trail ride options. There are three trips daily, at 9 AM, 1 PM, and 5 PM. The Trail is open Thursday through Monday and is closed on Tuesday and Wednesday. Admission is $25 for adults and $15 for children 12 and under. he Museum of Elk River Communities is a wonderful destination that showcases our beautiful Elk River heritage. If you would like to learn more about the history of the Elk River communities, including Clendenin, Queen Shoals, Elkview, Pinch, Mink Shoals, Blue Creek and everything in between, check out their hardbound, historical books. The original Elk River Historical Society published three books on the history of the Elk River communities. Volume One is currently sold out but volume two ($10) and volume three ($30) are available for purchase at the museum. The sale of these books helps with the Museum’s rent and monthly expenses. There are different stories in each of the volumes. Each one is a treasure trove of Elk River memories and history. The Museum also plans to publish a fourth volume in the near future. These books make excellent Christmas gifts so plan to give a gift that provides hours of pleasure for years to come.

The Clendenin Church of the Nazarene is an active supporter of the Elk River community, sponsoring both the Upward Basketball and Centershot Archery programs. Pastor Charles Larue is happy to announce that their church now has a new wooden gym floor. Their former floor was destroyed in The Flood of 2016 and the church sustained major property damage.

Rebounding from the Flood
“Our gym is a vital part of our community outreach,” said Pastor Larue; “I am thankful to our District and our General Church because otherwise this would not have happened.” He said they lost their original wood gym floor during the flood and for the last three years, they used a sport court floor that snapped together until they could raise enough money to install a new wooden gym floor. This is the 14th year of Upward Basketball at the Clendenin Church of the Nazarene. Pastor Larue brought the national Upward Basketball organization to West Virginia when he was a pastor in St. Albans in 1999. In 2005 he came to Clendenin and brought both the Upward Basketball and the Centershot Archery programs to the Nazarene Church. Mitch Smith of Smith Insurance at Elkview leads the Upward Basketball program and his son, Josh, leads the Centershot program. The Upward Basketball program at the Clendenin Church of the Nazarene has approximately 80 kids who participate each year. All children are welcome to sign up and this year, they are offering the program to Kindergarten through eighth grade students. The Upward Basketball program starts on the first Saturday in January. It is a community basketball league that has children from Kanawha, Roane and Clay counties. The kids are divided into teams and they practice and play at the Church for eight weeks. Pastor Larue said, “The little kids play cross court so we can actually play two games at one time.” The Centershot Archery program at the Clendenin Church of the Nazarene is for children and adults of all ages. Parents can shoot with their children if they want. Pastor Larue stated it was more of a family affair and open for anyone who wants to learn archery. He said, “The Centershot Archery program follows the same rules as the National Archery in the Schools Program (NASP), with a Christian emphasis during their break.” The students at Bridge-Clendenin Elementary also practice at the Nazarene gym and, during the off season, many of them also participate in the Centershot Archery program for extra practice. Lori Monk, director of the Bridge-Clendenin Elementary archery team said they would be starting their practices in the gym in October.

Bill Rogers of Pinch and Henry “Hank” Wriston (now Rock Hill, SC) attended Elkview High School together and have remained friends since then. Bill’s birthday is on August 5 and Hank’s is 3 days later on the 8th. This year Bill
turned 82 and Hank turned 83 years of age and Bill’s birthday wish was to take a birthday ride with his friends back to WI to see their good friend, Gary “Jake” Melton, from Tater Creek and New Hope Road, who now lives with his family right outside of Milwaukee. Also joining them on their ride were their good friends Roi Reed from Pinch (now Winchester, KY) and Steve Thomas from Sissonville. Roi said they used to ride together every weekend; however, this was Steve’s first time making the trip to Wisconsin. Both Steve and Roi had
In 2003, 2008, and 2013, Roi, Bill, and Hank rode their motorcycles to see Jake in Wisconsin. In 2003 it was the Harley Davidson 100th Anniversary birthday party and they all went to the festivities over Labor Day weekend. Every five years Harley Davidson has a big birthday celebration so it was a perfect time to make the trip. Roi said, “We used to camp out in Jake’s backyard and we called it Camp Jake. We even had a portable shower I ordered from Cabelas that we would hook up in his yard.” Bill said, “Gary has a beautiful farmhouse outside of Ft. Washington and it is just a great place to get together.” This year, however, Hank’s daughter helped them get an Air B and B nearby in Port Washington for their visit. While they were there, they went to the Harley
Davidson Museum which Steve had never visited before. Roi said he and Steve also took a ferry ride on the USS Badger from Ludington, Michigan to Manitowoc, WI so that Steve could experience the ferry ride like the guys had all done in previous years. In fact, Jake would ride his bike over to meet them in Manitowoc and they would all ride back to Jake’s house together. Steve said, “There were so many layers to the trip, including riding on the ferry which is the last steam engine, coalfired ferry in America, as well as driving along the beautiful coast of Lake Michigan.” They visited local motorcycle shops, and because this was a Harley Davidson rally year, there were many vendors at the motorcycle shop parking lots with a variety of gifts and accessories. Bill said they also visited Gary’s camp in northern Michigan, which is approximately 200 miles above the Green Bay Packers Lambeau Field Stadium and they made a pit stop at the stadium as well. He would love to go back to the camp next year, but said it was 46 degrees during their visit so he thinks he would like to go back in June when it is warmer! Bill said, “Roi wants to take the backroads next time rather than the interstate and Steve wants to go fishing. We can

motorcycle accidents in the past and they do not ride anymore. Instead, Bill and Hank rode their bikes and Roi and Steve drove Steve’s Mazda Miata. They left Pinch on August 24 and arrived in Port Washington on Lake Michigan on the 26th. Bill said, “Hank put me in front leading all the way except going around Milwaukee. Hank started a rumor about me driving too fast, but I’m not going to confirm or deny it.”

Jake said they always have a great time sitting around the fire pit telling stories when they all get together. He said, “Bill can tell the best stories, one right after the other.” Jake worked for Bill at Roger’s Grocery when he was in high school. He said, “Who would have thought we have been riding motorcycles in Wisconsin together years later!” Jake travels home to the farm on New Hope Road once or twice a year. Roi said they had a great time visiting Jake; in fact, he said they were on ‘awesome overload.’ Steve said, “Jake has a smoker and is a great chef, and he and his family had two cookouts for us during our visit. There were 20 people there on the first night.” Jake and his wife, Debbie, have four children and eight grandchildren. Hank said, “It was wonderful being in that part of the country and visiting Jake and his wonderful family. If Jake can’t come to the river, we will just take the river to him.” “Lots of good memories, stories and friendship,” said Roi. “We will always be Elk River family.”

Mary Jane is the daughter of Dorothy Dye and the late John Dye from Elkview. She and her husband, Ron, and their adorable dog, Dottie, reside in Pawley’s Island, SC where she takes many of her stunning photographs. Mike quickly realized there was something inside the bubbles—and moving fast. He was the first to react. Kicking as hard as he could with his fins he ascended 20 feet before making contact with Kelly. Unfortunately, Kelly didn’t realize what was going on. He had relaxed himself into a trance-like state so he could focus on exhaling and swimming. The sudden ascent had caused the air in Mike’s buoyancy compensator to expand, making him even more buoyant. He had only seconds to grab Kelly, dump air from his BC and get things under control. If he couldn’t, he would risk shooting himself to the surface and creating two people who needed rescuing and not just one. He caught Kelly and grabbed him roughly over his shoulders with his right hand. With his other hand Mike reached up and pulled down as hard as he could on the release on the shoulder of his buoyancy jacket. Air billowed out of the shoulder vent. Kelly began to struggle. I can’t believe this. They were waiting outside for me to swim. They are going to kill me, was the first thought that came to his irrational mind. He didn’t know what was going on, but he knew he needed to get to the surface. He needed to get to Tanya. Kelly began to struggle, twist and fight.
