Hello & Welcome Back! This month ERL is honored to highlight three businesses that have Elk River roots. Crede Tractor at Big Chimney is celebrating 57 years of serving as a staple in our community. Harry Crede founded the business on honesty and made sure he carried mowers that were dependable and that he could service when needed. Now that Harry has retired, his son, Billy, is the owner and strives to provide the same quality sales and service. Marie and Aaron Clark of Clendenin opened their new restaurant, 1010 Bridge, in South Hills in July. Aaron said it was their goal to have the best team of people and be outstanding ambassadors for both the Greater Kanawha Valley and for the State of WV. With their recent nomination for Best Fine Dining Restaurant in WV by WV Living Magazine, I would say they are certainly on their way! Jeannie Ladd Bird from Dirty Bird Soaps in Clendenin just released her new Fall Collection for 2020. She has created six new fragrant soaps with quality shea butter and moisturizing oils, and she says they feel as good as they smell. She also has soaps for sensitive skin, an assortment of green tea and goat milk soaps, exfoliating soaps, and a popular menâ€™s line of shampoo and body bars. Something special happens when you shop local and support businesses of Elk River family and friends. I know we appreciate every business who advertises in our Elk River Living magazine and we try to return that support whenever we can. “Our goal is to put together the best team of people we can and be able to be great ambassadors for our city and our state,” said Aaron. They are certainly well on their way to achieving this goal after only being open for two months. In fact, 1010 Bridge was just nominated for The Best Fine Dining Restaurant in West Virginia by the WV Living magazine.

The Clarks collectively have managed Tidewater, Bennigans, The Chop House, and catering departments for several hotels. They have also worked at Bridge Road Bistro and Marie still is the Event Coordinator at J.Q. Dickinson Salt-Works. Their 20 years of experience is amplified by partner Chef Paul Smith, a well-known chef in the Greater Kanawha Valley. Bartender Derek Palmer, best man at

the Clarks’ wedding and their Elk River neighbor, brings decades of experience for bar guests to trust and enjoy. This winning combination has resulted in a restaurant that offers one of the finest dining experiences you will ever have. Aaron said, “My experiences over the years have led me to immensely enjoy creating great guest experiences. The personal connections and bonds that are formed are irreplaceable.” Marie’s work as the Event Coordinator at J.Q. Dickinson Salt-Works introduced her to Chef Paul Smith. “Not only is he an amazing chef, he has been an indispensable resource, especially with menu design and creation,” Aaron added. The menu at 1010 Bridge is Appalachian with a low-country influence. It boasts an array of snacks, appetizers, salads, entrees and desserts. The Clarks have strong ties to local farmers and businesses and they are committed to utilizing them whenever possible. Some of the locals include Buzz Foods, Base Camp Printing, Hernshaw Farms, Gritt’s, New Root Farms,

Aaron stressed that “our commitment to the community will be evident from day one.” In fact, when you walk in the door, there is a chalkboard highlighting the restaurant’s local farmers and suppliers. He said, “ Our wine and beer list will be crafted to highlight and complement the cuisine with an emphasis on speciality craft cocktails.” 1010 Bridge Restaurant occupies the space that formerly housed South Hills Market in the South

The chance to give back to the community that has supported us while hoping to create new dining memories is our prominent thought.” The Clarks remodeled the space to portray a clean and unobtrusive, upscale southern living room. It is both inviting and exquisite. Aaron said tables have been spaced out to comply with the WV/COVID requirements for social distancing. Masks are required and all customers will have their temperature checked when they arrive. 1010 Bridge is indeed the actual address of the restaurant, located at 1010 Bridge Road in South Hills. The HHHS Huskies Golf Team did it again! They won the Cardinal Conference Championship for the second year in a row. The Cardinal Conference was held at Big Bend Golf Course on August 26 in Tornado, WV. Under the direction of Coach Eddie Gray, this yearâ€™s HHHS team scored 307 and won by 47 strokes ahead of the runner up, Winfield.

Crede Family Legend Continues Celebrating 57 years

n 1963 Harry Crede made a decision to open a dependable tractor business. This year Crede Tractor, now owned and operated by his son, Billy Crede, is proudly celebrating 57 years of serving the Elk River community.

Billy said, “Dad was pushing dirt with a used Economy tractor he purchased when he was building his house. Every evening he would come in after working at AT&T, and dump loads and push more dirt.” Within a couple of years Harry contacted a company in Wisconsin and opened his own business. The Economy tractor was his first brand. After that he sold SpeedX and later Snapper, Wheel Horse, Stihl, and a two-wheel BCS tractor.

It was important to Harry to be able to service what he sold. He also sold over 100 tractors to the State of WV. Billy said, “Dad provided good dependable service and made sure the brands he carried here were easy to work on and durable. Those are the brands he would carry and we follow that same business plan at Crede’s Tractor today.” Crede Tractor also carries Cub Cadet tractors now, as well as a full line of gasoline and battery-powered, hand-held, Stihl power tools, including weed eaters, blowers, and trimmers. In addition to Billy, you will also see the friendly face of Nick Richard of Clendenin who does repairs and works behind the counter. Billy said, “Even during the pandemic we have been

just as busy as ever.” Crede Tractor offers tractor pick up and delivery and continues the Crede’s commitment of providing great service. “Dad always stressed to be honest and he instilled that value in me,” said Billy; “I always try to be fair and honest with all of our customers.” Billy and Nick encourage people to get a jump start on the upcoming fall/winter season. Now is a perfect time to have your Stihl chainsaws and leaf blowers tuned up and ready to use. Also, Crede Tractor carries a good selection of products if it’s time to pick up a new one. Billy also said, “Before you put away your Cub Cadet rider or push mower and string trimmer this fall, bring them in and have the oil changed, blades sharpened, and serviced so they will be ready for next spring.” Billy is married to Connie Anderson Crede and they reside at Elkview. They have two children, Billy (Breanna) and Caitlin Crede Stricker (Josh). They have three granddaughters, Leighton, Jaede, and Jaelynn. Billy and Breanna are expecting the first grandson in October. Billy is the son of Harry and the late Carma Crede.

Either way, it’s a super easy recipe that is sure to please.

DIRECTIONS Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Spray a 9 x 13 baking dish with cooking spray

16 oz. Mountain Dew ½ C Pecan chips (optional)

Peel, core, and slice apples into 16 slices Put brown sugar in a bowl and roll each apple slice in the brown sugar Separate crescent rolls into 16 dough triangles Roll each brown sugar apple slice in a crescent roll dough triangle. Place into the prepared baking dish Melt butter in a small saucepan over medium heat; add sugar, cinnamon, and a pinch of salt and stir until dissolved Pour mixture over each dumpling. Pour Mountain Dew over and sprinkle with pecans. Bake 4045 minutes

Shawn Schoolcraft ERL proudly introduces our October Hero of the Month, Shawn Schoolcraft. His kindness and dedication to the Town of Clendenin and people of the Elk River make him a hero every day.

his First Sgt. Shawn D. Schoolcraft is the Deputy Director of Traffic Records and Director of the State Motor Vehicle Inspection Program for the WV State Police (WVSP). He has been a Trooper for 21 years. Shawn was first stationed in Wayne County after graduating from the WV State Police Academy and then he worked at the Huntington Detachment and the Quincy Detachment. He also served on the Crimes Against Children Unit until he was assigned to his current position.

During Shawn’s career, he has been a field training officer, assigned to the State Police Crime Scene for Troops 4 and 5, and to the State Police Legislative Detail for 11 years. He has completed numerous training sessions in leadership, statement analysis, interview techniques, and homicide investigations.

“My favorite part of the job has always been meeting a vast number of people from many walks of life,” said Shawn. “The job is really about doing the right thing and trying to help people,“ he added. “At each station I’ve been assigned, I’ve had the privilege of being around selfless people who have literally given their heart and soul to make West Virginia a better place. It’s hard to be a police officer, but the members of the WVSP

continue to go out there day after day and get the job done to protect our citizens.” Shawn said, “My brother Jeff is a retired State Trooper and was an inspiration to me and heavily influenced my decision to be a Trooper.” Shawn grew up in Clendenin and graduated from Herbert Hoover High School in 1991 (which he said “some would say is the greatest Hoover graduating class ever”). His parents were Bernard and Jean Ann Schoolcraft of Clendenin and his Uncle Dave and Aunt Sharon Fields live in the Town also and he frequently checks on them.

In his spare time, Shawn says he likes to travel around West Virginia and check out all of the cool things our state has to offer. “We have great parks and unique little restaurants and entertainment venues all over the state,” he said. “I’m a part of a FaceBook page that highlights some of the great things around our State called Best Virginia. It’s gaining followers everyday and my friend that created it has some great perspectives on our State.” Shawn is also an avid comic book collector and likes to travel and buy collections with several of his friends who are collectors as well. Shawn was an active part of the recovery in Clendenin from The Flood of 2016. He said, “The Elk River Community is very important to me. Many of the friends I have here I have known my entire life. The Elk River is a special place and there is no place I’d rather live.” Shawn said, “The camaraderie during The Flood truly reflected the giving, caring hearts and proved what a great community this is.” Shawn is also a board member for 25045--A New Clendenin, Inc., a nonprofit organization dedicated to the betterment of Clendenin and the surrounding areas.

ebbie Richard, WV native and acclaimed poet/author, has exciting news to share. Not only has she had four of her newest poems published in the new international literary magazine, “Literature for the People,” from Malta in the United Kingdom, she also had one of her books transcribed into Braille. Kristie Mills, teacher at the WV Schools for the Deaf and Blind, is having Hills of Home, which highlights Richard’s Appalachian roots, transcribed into Braille for some of her students. She will also be carrying paperback copies in her classroom for those who are visually impaired. Hills of Home also received praise from the late Earl Hamner, Jr., bestselling author of Spencer’s Mountain and creator of the beloved The Walton’s television series. Hamner said, “I think the book is a valuable, detailed, and most honest documentation of a part of Appalachia that has not been celebrated so well until now.” Featured in ERL this month is one of Debbie’s new poems published in “Literature for the People” Literature for the People

“Firsts”

The first day in the two-room schoolhouse in the curve of the road, nestled between the creek on one side and a steep hill on the other, a little blond-haired girl scolded me for taking her seat. Did she know her sense of place at such an early age?

The first time we plucked daisies to see if “He loves me or if he loves me not,” the delicate white petals drifted towards the ground like destined thoughts scattered in the wind. The first time I kissed a boy was in the churchyard after service one Sunday night, looking into the twinkling eyes of the boy with light brown curls, the one someone said I was “robbing the cradle” with. The first time I wished upon a falling star, I kept the wish to myself hoping it might actually come true, Or perhaps, because it was something I couldn’t possibly let anyone else know about.

When I splashed through the creek for the first time below my Grandma’s house and saw minnows swimming in the shallow water, darting in and out between the rocks, I wanted to see what secret places the minnows saw that I couldn’t, so hiking up my dress tail, I stepped across the slippery rocks, teetering from one to another as if in a game of Hopscotch.

What’s Brewing in Clendenin?

AR “Something is brewing in Clendenin,” says Matt and Nikki Holbert, owners of the former Farmers and Citizens Bank building on Main Street in Clendenin. They have been actively remodeling and preparing this building for new business since last summer. The front of the building will have a new look as well, preserving its history yet increasing its prominence. The first announcement is the opening of The Bank Bed & Beverage Air B and B. So far they have one unit completed and there will be a total of eight rentable bedrooms, each with a private bath. The upstairs hallway will have bedrooms on both sides. The Doc Harper room (once completed) is in memory of Dr. O. M. Harper who practiced in the Town for many years. It will feature a river view and is expected to be very popular on nights with riverfront concerts on the new stage the Town of Clendenin is building.

Rest and relax is the theme of the completed bedroom. There are plenty of books to read plus a television. Also, each room includes its own heater/AC. All of the original doors, door handles and locks have been preserved. The Holberts also preserved the claw foot bathtub! The second announcement is the target opening for their new brewery which will be located on the first floor of the building. Country Roads Brewing will open its doors this upcoming spring to coincide with the opening of the Elk River Trail in Clendenin and the start of kayak season. There will be a brewery with stainless steel vessels plus a tap room where guests may enjoy their favorite beverage while watching the brew master.
