New Discoveries at Butterworth Park

Beverly Flores, a member of A Healthy Clendenin, and Jeannie Bird approached the Clendenin Town Council in May and asked if they could restore the Park. Mayor Kay Summers said, “The Town of Clendenin was thrilled to donate this property for the Park and the children of our community.” Moose and Jeannie Bird also contacted 25045--A New Clendenin, Inc. (25045--ANC), and inquired about the abandoned playground equipment which had been purchased for the daycare center that was located at Riverview Business Park (former Clendenin Junior High School). The day care was destroyed in the Flood of 2016. Dave Knight, Vice President of 25045 ANC, said, “We have been

here are exciting changes at the Butterworth Natural Discovery Park in Clendenin and all of the children are loving the new additions. Moose (aka Steve) Bird and his wife Jeannie Ladd Bird, along with members of A Healthy Clendenin, have been donating their time and energy to give the Butterworth Natural Discovery Park a fresh new look.

BUTTERWORTH PARK, cont. approached in the past and asked what we were going to do with the equipment, but donating it to the Butterworth Natural Discovery Park for the children was just a perfect choice.” With the generous donation of five pieces of playground equipment from 25045 ANC, Moose and Bob Butterworth, son of the late Dr. David Butterworth, rolled up their sleeves and started restoring the equipment. First, they welded the monkey bars and gave them a bright coat of orange paint. Also, they have restored a pedal-bike merry-go-round which is a kid favorite, as well as a toddler car and train car. They are still restoring a piece that is a toddler school bus. As more equipment is restored, it will be added to the Park. Jeannie said, “We may even have room for a slide. We just have to see what there is room for after each piece is added.” There are also benches for seating located in the Park.

Andrea Payne Underwood, owner of Momma Payne’s Diner on Main Street in Clendenin said, “Our kids love the park! We go every evening. As soon as Ace’s eyes open in the morning, he is asking to go to the Park.”

The Butterworth Natural Discovery Park was created as a result of a needs assessment in 2012 to assess the health needs of Clendenin by a local group, A Healthy Clendenin. Jessica Gamponia Wright, a member of the group, explained that “the major need identified was that residents desired a safe place for their kids to play”. Several members planned and worked with organizations to design the playground, develop the structures, do the planting, etc. The grand opening was in August 2015 where it was officially named the Butterworth Natural Discovery Park after the dentist, Dr. David Butterworth, who used to practice on that property. Today, the Town of Clendenin leases the playground at no cost so that it can continue to be used to serve the community.

He also had the biggest fish in the 9-10 hour. He said, “This was the biggest catfish I have ever caught!” He caught a 46.6, 46.4 and a 43 all at the tournament that evening.

Gabi Strickland Walker of Walker Eats on Facebook, says just toss the ingredients in your crock pot that morning and you have a perfect meal. This is great served with the Smoked Bacon and Jalapeno Mac and Cheese or Gabi says you can also serve the sauce with spaghetti noodles.

Here’s What You’ll Need Sauce: 28 oz. can crushed tomatoes ¼ cup Marsala wine (or chicken broth) 1 t. salt 1 t. ground black pepper 1 t. fennel seeds ½ t. dried oregano ½ t. dried basil ½ t. garlic powder ¼ t. Red pepper flakes 8 Italian sausage links (Sweet or Hot Italian sausages, whatever you prefer) 2 large green bell peppers (seeded and sliced) 1 large onion, sliced 8 slices provolone cheese 8 hoagie buns

Level: Easy

Spray the inside of a crock pot with non-stick cooking spray. Place the sauce ingredients into the slow cooker and stir to combine. Add the Italian sausage links, bell peppers and onions. Stir to combine.

Cover and cook on low for 6 hours, stirring occasionally. Add 1 slice of cheese to each hoagie bun, one sausage link, and then pile on the peppers, onions and sauce.

Smoked Bacon and Jalapeno Mac and Cheese Here’s What You’ll Need 2 cups sharp cheddar cheese, shredded

16 oz. box macaroni noodles (I prefer the large size)

2 cups mild cheddar cheese, shredded

1 lb. bacon, chopped 1 fresh jalapeno, diced (seeds and membranes removed) ½ cup butter (1 stick)

½ cup ricotta cheese ½ cup parmesan cheese ½ cup chicken stock Salt, pepper to taste

8 T. all purpose flour

Liquid Smoke (optional)

2 cups milk 2 cups heavy cream

In a large pot of salted water over med/ high heat, boil noodles until done per package directions to al dente. (about 10 mins). Drain noodles and set aside. Chop bacon into bite size pieces and fry in a skillet over med/high heat until crispy. Remove bacon and drain on a paper towel, lined plate. Add diced jalapeno to reserved bacon grease and allow to fry about 2 or 3 minutes. Stir around the skillet as it fries and slightly crisps. Remove the jalapeno with a slotted spoon and allow to drain on the plate with the bacon.

In the noodle pot, melt the butter over med/high heat and stir in the flour to make a roux. Allow to cook for 2 minutes, stirring constantly. Add milk and continue to cook, stirring/whisking constantly until it thickens into a nice sauce. Add heavy cream and continue to stir and mix well. Add cheeses, 1 cup at a time, stirring to melt. Continue to add until all cheeses are melted. Add chicken stock. Stir in noodles, bacon and jalapeno. Stir well and add salt/ pepper to taste.

It is done at this point and ready to serve OR you can spray a 9 x 13 pan with non-stick cooking spray (use an aluminum foil disposable pan if using a smoker). Top with Panko bread crumbs if desired. Pour prepared Mac and Cheese into the pan and smoke at 225 for about 1 hour to 1 ½. If you are not using a smoker, you can also add a little Liquid Smoke to taste before baking.

or many years boaters and anglers have struggled to find public access points along Elk River. There is exciting news for kayakers and boaters: there are several new and upgraded public access sites and more to come!

The Division of Natural Resources, Fish and Wildlife Section, is currently installing or upgrading five public access points on the Elk River. The five new and improved access points include: Clendenin North (improved road access near the water plant), Clendenin South (across from Hokie Lane and Wolverton Mountain), Blue Creek (near the Blue Creek Bridge), Big Chimney Bald Knob (Rene Mae Drive), and Mink Shoals (near Harding's Family Restaurant).

The Elk River Water Trail runs from Sutton to Charleston. The non-profit Elk River Trails Foundation, Inc. was formed to support both the Elk River rail trail and the water trail. ERTF has been working with the DNR Fish and Wildlife 9 Section and identified five additional access sites Hammick Hill on Elkhurst Road in Clay County in the Wallback Wildlife Management Area. The DNR made signs identifying the access points and posted them on August 13. Mitch said, “It was reported that one site had two cars launching kayaks the first hour the signs were posted.”

The public access points are well-spaced to offer kayakers and boaters a number of excursion options for a pleasant few hours or a full day on the Elk River. Holmes Knob

his month ERL is proud to feature Bill Ore as our September Elk River Hero. His dedication to the Town of Clendenin and surrounding areas is reflected in his business,

his support of the community, and his caring personality. It is no surprise when you mention his name, you hear the response, “Bill Ore is an amazing man.” Bill is the owner of Clendenin Pharmacy on Main Street. The pharmacy was originally owned by the Bond family (Bond’s Pharmacy and Soda Fountain with their famous cherry cokes and milkshakes), then David Bowen (Bowen’s Pharmacy), and it was located on Main Street in the current H & R Block building. Bill bought the pharmacy from David Bowen in 1976. Eventually, he moved the pharmacy to its current building which was the former Cox’s Department Store. If you look closely at the H & R Block building, however, you can still see Clendenin Pharmacy on the facade. There are many Town memories of visiting the old pharmacy site, whether it be Bonds, Bowen’s or Ore’s, over the years.

Bill has been a longstanding member of the Clendenin Lions Club. He has always enjoyed supporting local school organizations including the Clendenin Little League, Herbert Hoover High School, Elkview Midget League Football, Upward and more. It is not uncommon to see Clendenin Pharmacy on many of the kids’ sports jerseys or t-shirts.

The Flood of 2016 devastated the Town of Clendenin and all businesses were destroyed by the flood waters. “We were in shock after the 2016 flood, but we knew there were people depending on us to open as quickly as possible,” said Bill.

The pharmacy was able to be up and running out of a temporary trailer within a week. “We were just doing our part, whether it was delivering medications and supplies, providing emergency services, or whatever we knew we could do to take some of the burden off of others who had lost homes, businesses, schools, and everything they had always known,” he explained. “All of us are still feeling the impact of The Flood today.” Bill is thankful they have always had so many in the community support them. He said, “The Elk River community is more of a family. We look out for one another. You can’t find this type of unity everywhere you go!” He takes pride in supporting the community right back as illustrated in the article by the Charleston Gazette when Medicare D had just started and was a complete mess. His daughter, Lindsay Ore Matuszkiewicz (husband, Jon), also a pharmacist at the store and previously his intern, shelf cleaner, delivery girl and other dad-assigned roles, said, “Dad was giving out fiveday supplies of medication to their customers until everything was resolved. He loves his community.”

Bill has lived in Clendenin since 1987 with his wife, Grace. They have five children, Billy, Matt, Aimee, Lindsay, and Jacob, and ten grandchildren, Will, Molly, Cody, Brayden, Reese, Emma, Mason, Eva, Mila, and Ellis.

Bill’s father, Clarence (Opie) Ore, (Anna, mother) worked at Union Carbide in Clendenin, and was moved to South Charleston as plant manager. Bill was raised in South Charleston and graduated from Charleston Catholic High School. He went on to attend West Virginia University and obtained a degree in Forestry Management before going to Pharmacy School. He enjoys hunting, fishing, and camping at his farm. He is also a sports enthusiast and loves watching his grandchildrens’ games.

These new tools will help identify locations and promote businesses along the Elk River Trails corridor. If you open a new trail-related business, tell ERTF so they can add you to the map. In August, an additional six miles of trail trails opened from Dundon to Hartland Bridge in Clay County. With this new addition, there are 28 miles of rail trails now open from Duck (Servia Exit) to Hartland (Wallback Exit or Rt. 16 from Gauley Bridge). There is also substantial new parking space available along the trail at the Ivydale Trailhead. Cross the Ivydale Bridge from Route 4 and turn right. You canâ€™t miss it. The next rail trail section scheduled for completion is from Queen Shoals to Clendenin, which will be a fourmile section. Although much of the rail trail work is complete, work cannot continue on this four mile section until the State authorizes the purchase of steel to install the bridges at Queen Shoals and Morris Creek.

ELK REFLECTS Remembering HHHS Vietnam Veterans

very day we drive across bridges in our area that are designated as Veteran memorial bridges. This month ERL would like to highlight four memorial bridges that have been named after Herbert Hoover High School Vietnam KIA (Killed in Action) Veterans in honor of their military service and sacrifice. The bridge crossing Coopers Creek on U.S. Route 119 is designated as the “PFC Thomas Keith Coleman Memorial Bridge”. He joined the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve and was a specialty Rifleman with the 3rd Marine Division, 3rd Battalion, 4th Marine I company. After serving less than a year, he was killed on January 27, 1968, in Quang Tri, South Vietnam, by hostile action, small arms fire and grenades, at the age of 19. He was the son of the late Marvin and Kathleen Coleman of Big Chimney. He has a sister Barbara Coleman Collins, who lives in Arizona.

He began his tour on January 18, 1968 and was killed in action in Thua Thien, South Vietnam by a hostile ground explosive device on April 8, 1968 at age 19. He was the son of Raymond Craft and Ray Nunley of Jordan Creek. He has a brother, Raymond Craft in St. Albans and a sister, Rosita Evans in Winchester, VA. The bridge near the Elkview Crossings Mall (over I-79 between Go Mart and Speedway) is named the “SP5 Johnnie Marvin Ayers Memorial Bridge”. He is the son of Ira and Helen Ayers and was raised on Schrader (Blue Creek). He was a Specialist Five, with the 173d Support Battalion, 173rd Engineer Company, United States Army and was killed in action in a hostile mortar attack in Binh Dinh, Vietnam on January 17, 1969 at the age of 19. His brothers and sisters are Carol Keeten, Patricia Bishop, Violet Moore, Charley Ayers, Nancy Hain, Alice Nichols, Walter Eugene Ayers, Bonnie Adams, Richard Ayers and Cindy Borders.

The Herbert Hoover High School Vietnam War Memorial which was located at the old HHHS location was relocated to the Elk Hills Cemetery when the high school was destroyed in The Flood of 2016. Sometimes it is easy to see signs and monuments honoring our Veterans and not really take the time to remember the sacrifices they made for our country. When we drive across a memorial bridge and see the honorary Veteran sign, let us take time to remember and say a heartfelt thank you for their service and for the service of all of our military and Veterans. Thank you to Richard Bashlor and the Museum of Elk River Communities at Elkview as well as these Veterans’ families for sharing photos.

Excerpt from Poached: Fighting for Sea Turtles (copyright 2020 Eric Douglas): A man came over the dune and headed straight for the freshly laid eggs. Mike knew this was a bad sign. He repositioned his camera and zoomed back out to get a better view of what was about to happen. The man looked around to make sure no one was on the beach and then followed the turtle tracks directly to the nest. Risking the light, Mike pulled out his phone and tapped out a message. "911. Poacher. My location." He hoped one of the volunteers on the group text would alert the authorities. Mike wasn't about to let the man dig up the nest, but there was only so much he could do. He took more photos of the man as the poacher pulled a shovel from his bucket and began uncovering the nest. Mike wanted to gather plenty of evidence. When Mike saw the first eggs come out of the hole in the sand, he knew it was time to act. He grabbed his other camera from his bag and fitted the flash into place. So many elderly do not understand the importance of staying active and the isolation is making it worse.â€? Andi Geary, Elk Valley Physical Therapy The lazy days of summer combined with social distancing, and stay at home orders due to the COVID-19 pandemic have led many people to reduced levels of activity. Gyms are closed, races are cancelled and for most people running or biking alone isn't as much fun as a group run or ride. However, just as exercising changes your body to be more healthy and fit, not exercising does the opposite. This process is called deconditioning. Use it or lose it Without regular doses of exercise and activity, the body will decondition. Typically, cardiovascular fitness is reduced first, followed by muscular strength. As people become less fit and activity becomes harder, they do less, leading to further

It only takes two weeks without exercise to have significant loss of cardiovascular fitness. Two to eight months of detraining can erase virtually all of your gains. Reversing the Loss The best way to deal with deconditioning is to prevent it in the first place. If you're just undergoing a period of increased time commitments at work or with family, using a shortened exercise routine can help minimize your losses. Even one session a week will help you keep most of what you've gained. Other options are to use shorter but more intense interval training sessions, or breaking up your activity into multiple short chunks during the day. If your layoff was longer, it may take just as long to retrain as it did to make the gains initially. A physical therapist can help get you back on the right track if you're having trouble getting started,

Put On Your Dancing Boots The Elk River Boots and Saddle Club will host a Kountry Kick’n JamFest on Saturday, September 5, 2020 on their club grounds located at 70 Country Lane Road, Elkview. Three bands will be performing including Wille D and No Regrets, Chris Allen Band, and Bourbon Cowboys.
