EVCS Captures State Wins
State Champions: Lady Eagles
Coach P. R. Burdette and Assistant Coach David Swor were extremely proud of the team and all of their hard work and commitment. Coach Burdette said. “Our team played several AAA, AA, A schools during Christmas vacation to prepare for the state tournament. They ended the season
with a record of 20-10 with them playing bigger schools including Sissonville (AA), East Fairmont (AA), Buffalo (A), and Riverside (AAA). Coach Burdette started coaching the Lady Eagles in the fall of 2007. Since their first season, they have now won 10 high school championship banners. The middle school started participating in the state tournament in 2012, and they have won 5 middle school championship banners. Three team members were named All Tournament Team: Carlee Burdette, Erika Newhouse, and Gracie Frame, who was also named MVP for the tournament. The Lady Eagles have one senior, Hannah Lemon.

he Elk Valley Christian School’s Lady Eagles basketball team captured the championship title in the WV Christian Education Association (WVCEA) Tournament in Beckley. The varsity girls defeated Mercer 44-36 to emerge victorious. Mercer was the number one seed and two-time state champion, but the Lady Eagles held on to win the championship title.

Coach Burdette said, “I especially appreciate the parents letting me be me. It’s hard work preparing the team for competition and it takes a lot of pushing. Having the support of the parents, school, and the team is a winning combination.�

EVCS Boys’ Team Wins Third The Elk Valley Christian School’s varsity boys basketball team took third place at the WVCEA Tournament. They defeated Victory Christian 52-43 in the consolation round. This was the first time in eight years that the boys’ basketball team has placed in the State Tournament. The Eagles then travelled to the NCSAA National Tournament that was held in Mt. Vernon, OH. Coach Tim Bailey said, “We lost the first two games, but we beat South Merrimack Christian from New Hampshire with senior Josiah Underwood making the winning shot in the last seconds, 55-54.”

The boys’ team concluded their season with an 18-8 record. Senior members include Austin Sergent, Bailey Walker, Blake French, Josiah Underwood, Ethan Woodard and Hunter Hall. Also, two seniors, Joshiah Underwood and Ethan Woodard, scored over 1000 points for their career. “It was really exciting to see them both hit their 1000 point mark, and they did it within two games of each other,” said Coach Bailey.

EVCS Cheerleaders Take Second Place Also, the varsity cheerleading squad took second place at the WVCEA State Tournament. This is the second year Elk Valley has placed second in the tournament. They have previously captured several first place awards at the tournament as well. The cheerleading competition consisted of three cheer teams. Each team had to do a two-three minute routine that consisted of crowd cheers, floor cheers, jumps and stunts.

Enjoy the Ride or Walk or Run! The Elk River Trail will be a first-class trail that will offer one of the most beautiful outdoor recreational experiences in the Eastern United States.
T
here is exciting news for Elk River! The first 10 miles of the Elk River Rails to Trails is open from Duck (Servia Exit) to Ivydale (Big Otter Exit). The Duck Trail Head has been full of bikers and hikers every weekend since its opening. Ken Tawney, President of the Elk River Trail Foundation, Inc. said, “It is so exciting to see the parking lots full of happy people, ready to hit the trail. After the COVID-19 pandemic, it is wonderful to be able to have a safe place to social distance, breathe the fresh air, and enjoy the beautiful scenery along the Elk River Trail.� The 74-mile-long Elk River Trail rails-to-trails will be a first-class trail that will offer hikers, bikers, and horseback riders one of the most beautiful outdoor recreational experiences in the Eastern United States.

No motorized vehicles other than authorized maintenance vehicles are permitted on the trail, although wheelchairs and Class 1 peddle-assist bicycles can be ridden. The trail runs its entire length along the

Elk River Trail, cont. Elk River with a grade that exceeds one-half degree in only two places (and in those places less than one and one-fourth degree). In other words, the trail is virtually flat! Governor Jim Justice first announced the creation of the rail trail on May 8, 2019, at a public appearance in Clay. The rail trail will be incorporated into the West Virginia State Park system. The main railroad, owned by The Elk River Railroad, Inc., runs along the Elk River 56 miles from Reamer ( just south of Clendenin) to Duck, WV in Clay County (near the Clay-Braxton County line). The 12-mile trail segment between Ivydale and Dundon will be completed next and is expected to open later this summer. The 4.2 mile section from Clendenin to Queen Shoals and the 5-mile section between Dundon and Hartland Bridge are anticipated to open after that, followed by the 26-mile section from Hartland Bridge to Queen Shoals, thus connecting the full 56 miles of trail along the river. In addition, the State will purchase a spur line, the Buffalo Creek & Gauley Railroad, that runs from Dundon (just outside Clay, WV) along Buffalo Creek to Widen, WV, that will also be incorporated into the State Park system. That section will be a rails-with-trail, with rides available on either self-peddled rail cars or cars pulled by a small motorized rail cart. The trail for hiking, biking and horseback riding will run alongside the railroad tracks. The 18-mile Buffalo Creek Spur will not be fully open until a railroad bridge washed out in The Flood of 2016 is completed in 2022. However, the section between Dundon Bridge and the washed-out bridge is currently open. For reservations to ride the railroad on the section currently open, call 304-618-7992. The long-range goal is to extend the trail another 38 miles north from Duck through Braxton County to the literal “end of the line” at Gilmer Station in Gilmer County. That will bring the total trail mileage to 110 miles, making it one of the longest rail trails east of the Mississippi.

The public support for the trail has been overwhelming. The Elk River Trail Foundation, Inc. (ERTF), was incorporated as a non-profit corporation on February 26, 2020, to support development of the Elk River Trails corridor. The board of directors recognized that there is a symbiotic relationship between the rail trail and Elk River. One of the purposes of ERTF is to support economic development along the Elk River Trails corridor by developing a tourism industry surrounding recreational activities
on both the trail and the river. “Peddle up and paddle down” is a phrase that captures some of the recreational possibilities. Another exciting development occurred earlier in June when the ERTF signed a contract to buy the land at the confluence of Buffalo Creek and Elk River. The two acre tract lies between the river, Buffalo Creek, and the railroad at the location where the Buffalo Creek and Gauley Railroad intersects with The Elk River Railroad Inc. This tract will provide a trailhead with an abundance of parking, public river access, and other recreational opportunities. According to Ken Tawney, a membership drive will soon begin to raise funds to use for trail improvements and to recruit volunteers to assist with trail maintenance and improvements. ERTF is also seeking grant funding for projects along the trail for which funding may not be available through the state park system. You may also visit Elk River Trail Foundation on Facebook for more information. ERTF is also working to help transform towns along the river into “trail towns” to serve the needs of trail users. Led by the West Virginia University Extension Service, Rural Tourism, meetings are being conducted among representatives from Braxton, Clay and Kanawha Counties with a goal of establishing a working partnership among the towns and communities to identify and take advantage of opportunities for a tourism economy along the Elk River Corridor from Sutton to Clendenin.

A study funded through a grant to the Kanawha County Commission is also underway to identify the possibilities for business development in northern Kanawha County in conjunction with the Elk

Plans for a new micro-brewery, Country Roads Brewery, have been announced in Clendenin by Matt and Nikki Holbert, owners of Bricks and Barrels and Axes and Ales in Charleston. They also will have three Take Me Home bed and breakfast rentals available this fall. Other opportunities abound for economic growth spurred by the tourism industry, including bike shops, livery services, horse stables, gift shops, arts and craft shops, and antique stores, to name but a few.

Eats) shared her quick, delicious twist of the pepperoni roll. She says they are great for dinner or make up several batches and keep handy for a great snack.

Your favorite marinara/pizza sauce for dipping

Preheat oven to 450 Spread pizza dough out on a lightly greased baking sheet. Cut the dough into 10 equal size rectangles. Arrange 6 pepperoni slices on each rectangle and top with ½ mozzarella cheese stick. Roll up the pizza dough, enclosing the cheese stick, pinching the seams closed. Melt the butter and add the garlic powder. Brush the pizza sticks with the butter. Bake for 10-12 minutes or until golden brown. Enjoy warm with a side of marinara sauce for dipping if desired.

It’s our way of paying it forward and giving back to our community.” Randy credits his idea to WQBE Morning Air Show by Jake who was discussing someone in another state paying for gas for nurses. Affiliated Financial Group then issued a challenge to other professionals in our area to step up and give back.

Jon Matuszkiewicz, Vice President of AFG, was so impressed that what started as an idea to pay for 100 nurses escalated to over 1000 nurses and healthcare workers with the help of local businesses aiding the cause. Overall, a total of 1,432 healthcare workers were able to receive gas for approximately $30,000 of donations. The local Exxon One Stop in Kanawha City also agreed to lower the price of gas so that more healthcare workers could be served.

The produce stand is located on the left just before Clendenin City Hall and is open from 9 AM to 5 PM every Thursday and Friday. Owner Tony Richards was the manager at the Farmer’s Market in Charleston for 25 years. He retired from the Department of Agriculture and he and his wife, Patricia, are hoping to keep the produce market open through December. “I am going to offer a variety of produce throughout the year, according to what is in season,” said Tony. He stated that peaches from South Carolina arrive mid-June, and in July he will have fresh peaches grown from the eastern panhandle. “In September I will have a variety of fresh apples and in November there will also be oranges and grapefruits.” Five years ago, Cabin Creek Health Clinic asked if Tony would offer fresh produce for seniors one day a week at their Clendenin location. He now is operating the produce market at the new location for the Elk River community. Tony accepts credit cards and senior vouchers.

Picture Perfect Local artist, Jill Moles Mullins, recently had five of her pictures accepted in the 2020 “All Women Artist” - 6th Annual International Contemporary Art Gallery Exhibit. Even more, her picture, Botany Bay Magic, has been awarded their Gallery Choice Award. Her other pictures on exhibit there include Sunset on the New River Gorge, Tracks of the Past, Circle of Feathers and Stillness. The 2020 All Women Art Exhibition includes 170 female artists and 850 pieces of art. The awards included A Best In Show, Judges Choice, Gallery Choice (awarded to Jill), and first- through ninthplace awards. Jill said, “I am thrilled and honored beyond measure to have one of my pictures win such a wonderful award among so many talented women throughout the world. Exciting doesn’t even begin to describe it!” Her award-winning picture, Botany Bay Magic, is also on display and for sale in the dining area of Tamarack: The Best of West Virginia. Sunset on the New River Gorge is currently being displayed in the Beckley Art Center-Cynthia Bickey Art Gallery, along with four other pictures. Stillness, Tracks of the Past, and Circle of Feathers are currently being displayed in the “Women of Appalachia” art exhibition along with four other pictures at the RegisterHerald newspaper lobby in Beckley, WV. Circle of Feathers is currently showing in the Apartment Earth Gallery in Charleston, WV. Stillness was also in the Carnegie Hall Juried Exhibition Gallery--”Off the Beaten Path” and won first place in that gallery show.

Forty Years Strong
T
his month ERL would like to recognize Bill Naylor of Bill’s Used Cars, located in Clendenin, WV, who proudly celebrated 40 years in business this May, from 1980-2020.

Bill started working for his dad, Eugene Naylor, Sr., at Hi-Way Service Center in Clendenin while he was still in high school. He graduated from Herbert Hoover High School in 1965, which was the second graduating class in the new school. At the Hi-Way Service Center (Ford dealership) he worked in all departments and finally, in sales, which is what he enjoyed the most. He opened his own dealership, Bill’s Used Cars, in May of 1980. Bill said, “Our son, Billy (William Naylor, Jr.) works with me now at our business, and he enjoys working on cars. I still prefer sales.”

The worst event Bill said he has ever witnessed was The Flood of 2016. It destroyed his business, including the 69 cars on his lot, the 7 uninsured collectables in the showroom, and his truck and trailer. It took him over 2 years to reopen the doors after the tragic flood. The flood waters actually moved the foundation and ruined the garage floors.The whole car lot shifted and one car even went through the showroom window. There was 8 feet of water in the showroom and more in the service area, and to this day, the service center is unstable and remains closed. Bill said the showroom was cleaned and used as a recovery and distribution center for several months after the flood. “I hope I never see anything as devastating as The Flood of 2016,” he said. “It totally destroyed the Town of Clendenin, including businesses and residences. It was heart-wrenching.”
No stranger to adversity, Bill recently faced the COVID-19 pandemic and his shop was closed for over two months. He said they just recently began selling cars again. He is hoping businesses can come back strong. “Clendenin is still recovering from the first tragedy in 2016; the last thing we needed was another setback,” he said. Bill said he has enjoyed owning his own dealership. “It’s what I’ve always done and I especially love old cars. I used to have around 25 collectables and now I have 6 or 8 still.” Take a drive to Clendenin and stop by his business and see some of the collectible cars displayed in his showroom. It is a pleasure to meet Bill and see the success he has built for 40 years. His wife, Fran, says “we’ve had many family members and friends pitch in and help, but we still tease Bill that he only wants to be a one-man show. It still takes a village of family, friends, and outside interests to make his business work.”

Bill is married to Fran Taylor Naylor and they are celebrating their 54th wedding anniversary this month. They reside at Queen Shoals. They have three children, Katherine Naylor, Susan Naylor Smith, and William Jr. (Billy), and 11 grandkids and 9 great grandkids.

A Perfect Excuse to Go Fishing Scott Bird of Clendenin and his son, Matthew, took advantage of the request for social distancing to avoid the COVID-19 virus. They spent several days fishing at Smith Mountain Lake in Virginia. They actually had plans to fly to Tampa, FL, over spring break, but they decided against flying at the last moment due to COVID-19 precautions. Instead, Scott drove to St. Louis, MO, picked up Matthew, and they traveled to Smith Mountain Lake. Scott said they spent two days on the lake and caught 13 fish, 1 largemouth bass and 12 striped bass.

This month ERL would like to recognize another outstanding group of wrestlers on the Elk River. The Junior Huskie Wrestling Club placed third overall in the Mountaineer Youth Wrestling League. Coach Scott Starcher said, “I am really proud of our team. We have a lot of new, younger wrestlers and they did a great job this year.” Coach Starcher grew up in Clendenin and graduated from Herbert Hoover in 1991.

"During the offseason is when we start exposing kids more to free-style and greco," Mike explained. "It improves mat awareness and neutral skills." The Hoover Junior Huskie Wrestling Club consists of wrestlers ages 4-12 years old. They began in 1974 as a pee-wee team under the Parks and Recreation League. After the middle/high school wrestling seasons ends, they combine with Lead Dog Wrestling Club as a year-round, all-ages wrestling club. o I took a side path down memory lane! Living hours away from home, my heart didn’t break until I looked at the shock of reality! I didn’t want to believe what was in the news. I drove the route from my home as fast as I did when I was 16. My heart did not forget the turns and curves and all the little pick ups of friends! I pulled into the parking lot of my high school and youth. Then I started to cry. My spot was still perfectly shaded by a big maple tree. I took it all in, from my freshman to my senior year. I closed my eyes and I could hear the sounds of the marching band. I could remember every step I took with perfect rhythm. I could hear the commands that were given to me and the commands that I ordered for a perfect cadence for a homecoming team! I could feel my feet on the pavement with every hole and rock. I could feel the rush as my feet ran up the hill through the gates, past the ball field and to the final lap of the track! I smiled when my eyes hit the gym. The memories of the last shot, the last pass, and our ups and downs.

I miss the joys of being young and just living. I miss enjoying the game of life. I long for the love of youth and beg for the moment of being young again and the friendships that would last a lifetime!
