WELCOME Welcome to our fourth Pro Landscaper Sustainability and Biodiversity Awards where we celebrate the work and the leadership of the organisations and people that are helping us showcase the value and positive impact that landscape delivers as a solution in addressing the climate challenges we face. After another year of record-breaking temperatures where we experienced the hottest summer ever in the UK, which followed on from one of the wettest periods ever, the volatility is no longer a long-term challenge – it’s one that we face today. That’s why it’s so critical that through these awards we can present the evidence by showcasing positive examples on how the sector can make such a big difference. So, I would like to thank all those who entered for helping us and the sector by enabling us to do that. This year includes new categories that recognise housing associations and ecology teams, highlighting the important role they play alongside the other key stakeholder groups in the delivery and stewardship of green spaces. Alongside them, we have more than 40 companies on the shortlist including major contractors, consultants, landscape architecture studios, forward-thinking councils and some remarkable projects. Congratulations to all those that made it; it’s an incredible achievement to be featured and you are helping us present the compelling case of the role of landscape. Thank you to our esteemed panel of judges, which includes both industry and sustainability specialists for helping determine our winners (see them on page 34). Finally, thank you to our headline partner Allgreen and the category and event sponsors for their support in allowing us to put these awards on.

MAINTENANCE CONTRACT In partnership with

WINNER HERE EAST | QUALITY & SERVICE LTD (Q&S) A wholly independent, privately owned landscaping company and a disruptor in urban horticulture, Q&S is leading the shift toward genuinely sustainable, biodiverse maintenance regimes. It gardens by hand, organically and 100% chemical free, across portfolios from two to 200+ acres, backed by a local team of more than 50 skilled gardeners and ISO9001, 14001 and 45001 accreditations. Its approach has helped multiple client sites achieve the prestigious Wildlife Trusts Biodiversity Benchmark Awards. Guided by its values – integrity, boldness, honesty & trust, and freedom – Q&S turns day-to-day maintenance into long-term habitat creation, building green legacies that work as hard for wildlife and wellbeing as it does for its clients. Take Here East’s 111,500m2 campus – the former London 2012 Press and Broadcast Centre – which is now one of London’s most closely managed urban habitats. For eight years, two of Q&S’ dedicated, locally employed gardeners have maintained it, including transforming Here East’s Canalside lawns into a wildflower-rich habitat. Maintaining it without pesticides has allowed for nine tonnes of organic green waste in the last year alone to be diverted from landfill and composted on-site, feeding directly back into Here East’s own soil.

WINNER LONDON GREEN INFRASTRUCTURE FRAMEWORK | GREATER LONDON AUTHORITY AND LUC Developed by the Greater London Authority (GLA) with the help of award-winning environmental consultancy LUC, the London Green Infrastructure (GI) Framework is a first-of-its-kind digital mapping tool that identifies where investment in GI can deliver the greatest benefits for people, nature and climate resilience across Greater London. The interactive online platform combines London-wide spatial datasets relating to GI provision and need, helping decision makers understand where interventions could provide the greatest impact. The web-based outputs provide an innovative, data-led and interactive approach to guide users on how to plan, fund, design and deliver GI across London. It was built with input from more than 100 stakeholders and experts to help shape the future of London’s land and green space. “An outstanding strategic tool that brings environmental, social and health information together to guide better green infrastructure investment across London. Its ten objectives, multi-scale analysis and integration of inequalities make it considerably more than a mapping platform,” commented judges.

COMMERCIAL BUILD PROJECT UNDER £500K In partnership with

WINNER NORTHBROOK PARK WETLANDS | BAYLIS LANDSCAPES With a legacy spanning four generations, Baylis Landscapes has evolved into a trusted name in commercial landscaping, with roots in modern landscaping dating back to the 1950s. It blends decades of expertise with innovative solutions to deliver outstanding results across a variety of sectors, with a range of services including environmental works, commercial soft and hard landscaping, vegetation management and sports construction. Sustainability is at the heart of everything it does, and it is committed to providing exceptional landscaping solutions while minimising its environmental footprint. This is showcased through Northbrook Park Wetlands, a scheme that transformed a section of Northbrook Park in Lewisham into a thriving habitat for wildlife and a living classroom for local schools. A previously hidden piped stream running directly into a surface water drain, which contributed to the risk of flooding downstream, was uncovered. This created two new wetland ponds connected by a stream to create a wide range of varied habitats, to support biodiversity. The works also included the creation of accessible paths, as well as outdoor learning and natural play features designed to bring nature closer to the people. Judges called it “an outstanding environmental transformation project.”

WINNER THE FLOOD RESILIENT GARDEN AT HOWBERY PARK | BELDERBOS LANDSCAPES AND THE ENVIRONMENTAL DESIGN STUDIO LTD (TEDS) The Environmental Design Studio (TEDS) and Belderbos Landscapes bring together environmental design, flood resilience, landscape construction and planting. TEDS was founded by Dr Ed Barsley and specialises in turning complex climate risks into practical, beautiful and engaging design solutions. Belderbos Landscapes is an employee-owned company with extensive experience designing, building, planting and maintaining high-quality gardens, including RHS show gardens. Together, the team reimagined Flood Re’s 2024 RHS Chelsea Flower Show garden as a permanent public space at Howbery Park. Almost every feature from the garden was repurposed in addition to using recycled materials from the new site, while planting creates wet, dry, sunny and shaded habitats. Rainwater from rooftops and gutters is channelled into a series of reclaimed tanks before flowing through a planted swale and pond. It is free to visit and shows, in a clear and enjoyable way, how gardens can slow, store and reuse rainwater, support wildlife and remain attractive and useful whatever the weather.

ECOLOGY TEAM OR COMPANY In partnership with

WINNER LOWTHER FARMING PARTNERSHIP Lowther Farming Partnership is pioneering a landscape-scale approach to sustainable land management, combining productive forestry and farming with ambitious nature recovery across the Lowther Estate in Cumbria. Moving beyond traditional land management, the Partnership is restoring rivers, wetlands, woodlands, meadows and natural grazing systems to create resilient, connected landscapes where nature and enterprise thrive together. Its achievements include planting 65,000 trees, restoring 1,800m of river, reconnecting 20ha of floodplain and creating 15ha of wetland. This commitment is already delivering measurable results, including a 341% increase in breeding bird territories at Setterah Park – from 125 in 2019/20 to 426 in 2024, demonstrating measurable biodiversity recovery following landscape-scale habitat and land-management change. Lowther shows how progressive land management can deliver lasting environmental, economic and community value at landscape scale. Judges applauded “the integration of business focus into conservation thinking” as well as the “really strong outcomes and outstanding approach to sustainability and conservation.”

WINNER WYEVALE NURSERIES Wyevale Nurseries is a family-run wholesale nursery with more than 95 years of horticultural heritage, supplying trees, shrubs, hedging and herbaceous plants to landscapers, local authorities and garden centres across the UK. From responsible sourcing and plant provenance to water management, peat reduction and plant health, Wyevale Nurseries recognises that decisions made long before plants reach site influence the outcomes its customers can achieve. Through sustainable production and practical knowledge tools such as Climate Champions, it helps to support resilient planting and better-informed landscape decisions. Two hundred and sixty-five million litres of self-funded water storage, a majority peat-free nursery and a plant portfolio designed for climate resilience all show how Wyevale Nurseries is investing today to safeguard the landscapes of tomorrow. “Wyevale Nurseries demonstrated how sustainability can be embedded throughout a large and complex operation, rather than treated as a separate initiative,” said the judges.
