WELCOME T echnology is constantly evolving. Remember finally affording a flip phone before almost immediately pining for the sleek QWERTY keyboard of a Blackberry? The latest trends change and it’s important that industries in particular keep up, including landscaping. So, when more environmentally friendly technologies such as battery powered chainsaws, electric vans and vehicle tracking came along, the landscaping industry embraced them and it’s now a race to adopt the latest ‘green’ kit on the market. Look at Cultura Group – as its head of compliance, Andy Collins, explains on page 4, the green service provider sees battery, as well as remote controlled kit, as the future. But switching to sustainable alternatives isn’t easy. Whilst battery powered versions of smaller kit such as strimmers and hedge trimmers are readily available now, albeit at typically higher prices, the larger kit such as rideon mowers and chippers are not. Despite this, the government is encouraging companies to switch to greener kit or

pay a heftier price for diesel as certain industries see their right to use the lower duty red diesel withdrawn from selected uses in April 2022.

INTERVIEW WITH ANDY COLLINS Andy Collins, Cultura Group’s head of compliance, talks to us about the difference between the company’s approach to kit for maintenance and kit for landscaping, as well as where the future of equipment lies

ven though the Cultura rebrand is still relatively new, the company is underpinned by three decades of experience and with a senior management team made up of key players from leading industry organisations with the exposure of working with big clients on high-end projects and with the latest equipment. Working nationwide on an extensive range of projects, Cultura offers hard and soft landscaping, arboriculture and grounds maintenance. Perhaps unsurprisingly, the equipment it uses in these services varies hugely, but

its approach to equipment does too. “For grounds maintenance work you want reliable kit that is going to be good day in and day out, week after week, month after month,” explains Andy Collins. “For that work, we stick to tried and tested equipment that’s been available for some time and has a reputation for being durable, safe and reliable.” For Cultura this is STIHL, AS Machinery, Kubota and Honda. “STIHL are industry leaders and spend a lot of time working on safety technology, AS Machinery’s equipment is well engineered and can take a beating, and Kubota and Honda are fundamentally the market leader in engines,” explains Andy. For its landscape construction work, though, it’s a different ball game. On any one day Cultura could be working

on an infrastructure project planting 2km of whips or on a 20 th floor building developing a high-quality roof garden. This means the breadth of equipment needed is large. So, to avoid equipment

This allows us to draw on a much broader range of experience which in turn helps to inform our machinery selection which is then met through our supply chain partners.” This equipment ranges from excavators, dumpers and tractors with flower rotavators or power harrows to what Andy says is usually the last piece

of equipment on site, a powered auger. “A powered auger is used in conjunction with a cable avoidance tool so we can map out large swathes of the area,” notes Andy. “When we're planting 3km of trees and shrubs, anything we can do to speed that up is a godsend.” One importance remains throughout every project, every service and every piece of equipment – safety. The company provides a combination of training both inhouse and with outside suppliers, but its primary concern is the risk of hand-arm vibration syndrome along with noise and manual handling. “When it comes to handheld machinery our primary concern is vibration, especially when we're using two stroke machines. Whilst that's alleviated somewhat by using battery equipment, it doesn't completely go away,” explains Andy. “There's no point having a machine that has a great work output if you have to rotate operatives every two hours or run the risk of exposing staff to mid to high vibrations day in and day out. So, we procure the stuff to make sure it's as www.prolandscapermagazine.com

low vibration as possible.” Indeed, many of Cultura’s core values focus on supporting one another as a team and treating each other with respect, its staff’s wellbeing clearly intrinsic to its success. One of its other core values is sustainability – throughout its products, practices, processes, and solutions. Both of these will influence how it purchases equipment in the future.

WHILST THE INITIAL PURCHASE IS EXPENSIVE, OVER A LIFETIME IT WORKS OUT THE SAME OR CHEAPER. WHY WOULDN’T YOU MAKE THE CHANGE? “Our aim is for it to be all electric at the earliest opportunity,” Andy tells us, “10 years ago, the batteries just didn’t last long enough. Now, it’s a totally viable option. With life cycle analysis, we’re able to clearly compare the cost over time to fossil fuelled equipment and see that, whilst the initial purchase is expensive, over a lifetime it works out

the same or cheaper. Why wouldn’t you make the change?” Recently the company trialled some of STIHL’s battery powered equipment which Andy feels is at the forefront due to both the product range and the modular batteries. Though, for Andy, the future of equipment is definitely being led by battery powered equipment – he also sees remote controlled equipment growing. “It allows us to remove the operator from being exposed to any hazards,” explains Andy. “Though there will be some circumstances where remote controlled isn’t practical, it will still become more prevalent.” However, the future always affects equipment. Andy believes there's always going to be one bottleneck to deal with – a shortage of skilled horticulturists. SEEING RED The withdrawal of red diesel from certain industries next year could have huge cost implications for the landscaping sector

he government’s decision to reform red diesel usage is, arguably, a kick in the teeth for the landscaping industry. Despite the recent recognition green spaces have received for their benefits to mental health and wellbeing, the cost of constructing and maintaining them is set to soar with changes due to come into effect next year. So, what exactly are the impending changes to red diesel usage? How could this impact the industry? And what can it do to prepare? For the last six decades, red dye and chemical markers have been used to set ‘red diesel’ apart from its counterpart, ‘white diesel’, which is used in road vehicles. Red diesel on the other hand, is solely for non-road applications and, as such, carries a lower duty. “The diesel at the pump is around £1.40 per litre, but red diesel is about 56p per litre, so is a little bit less than half,” explains Owen Baker, BALI’s technical officer. “A farmer, for instance, will use about 39L of diesel an hour, so using red diesel instead of normal diesel will save him about £18 per hour or about £150 per day. For someone in construction or landscaping, their kit might be a little bit smaller but they’re probably saving £100 on just one tractor by using red diesel. So, the difference is massive.” From April 2022, though, the HMRC is withdrawing the use of red diesel from certain industries, including construction, with which landscaping has been lumped together. Companies will need to switch to white diesel and find a cleaner alternative as part of the government’s goal to bring greenhouse gas emissions to net zero in the UK by 2050. use red diesel – which the government says produces nearly 14 million tonnes of CO 2 a year – it says it is encouraging businesses within these sectors to use “greener alternatives or less fuel”. Emissions won’t change though, argues Angus Lindsay, group head of asset and fleet management at i dverde UK. “The machines will still have to run on diesel, so whether it’s red or white, the emissions will be the same. The government is saying it’s to push people down the route of electric or petrol, but the alternatives aren’t there. It’s too soon.” The construction and landscaping industries are already

The only change will be the cost to contractors until the technology becomes available.” The problem, says Angus, is that landscape construction and grounds maintenance are not deemed as a separate industry by the government and

FEATURE so tend to fall through the cracks – and the cost implications are jaw-dropping. “Potentially, all our ride-on mowers and any vehicle that is going to be operating on the road will now have to start running on white rather than the red diesel which we currently use. It's going to add 30% onto the cost of fuel for our ride-on machines that run on red diesel.

IT'S GOING TO ADD 30% ONTO THE COST OF FUEL FOR OUR RIDE-ON MACHINES THAT CURRENTLY RUN ON RED DIESEL “The fuel suppliers won’t really lose out because they’ll supply more white diesel. It won’t make much of a difference to machinery suppliers because the machinery is the same and people are still going to buy it. It’s the end user that will be impacted.” There are exemptions from the new rules. These include vehicles and machinery used for cutting verges and hedges, snow clearance, gritting roads and maintaining community amateur sports clubs as well as golf courses. But Angus says the definitions of these aspects needs to be clarified. A ‘grass verge’, for instance, is open to interpretation. “They just say a verge is a strip of land adjacent to a public highway; but a verge in London could be half a metre wide whereas a verge in Milton Keynes, for instance, could be 10m wide. So, would we be allowed to cut all of that grass using red diesel? There’s no 10

definition, and who is going to be the person to test it when they could be fined by the HMRC?” Forking out for the fuel isn’t the only concern, either. In its response to the government’s consultation on red diesel usage, BALI has expressed concern over the possibility of a rise in fuel theft. “Red diesel is less of a magnet for thieves; it’s less appealing because it has red dye in it, so you can’t really use it in your car or van, for example,” says Owen. “But normal white diesel, which we put in our cars, will need massive storage areas on construction sites or landscape depots. Fuel theft is already an issue for the landscape and construction industries, and we think it’s going to get worse.” So, companies may need to consider preventative measures. “We don’t keep white diesel on site in bulk tanks because of the issues around theft. We do keep red diesel because people don’t tend to steal it. So, are we now going to have to consider storing white diesel on site? And if so, are we going to need added security?” wonders Angus. “If we decide that we’re not going to store it on site, then we’re going to need to fill up at filling stations in the morning, increasing the amount of traffic on the roads and increasing congestion.” This is probably not the environmental impact the government had in mind, and that’s not all. The weight limit for agricultural vehicles which are exempt from the reform is 1,000kg, but the majority of commercial ride-on mowers that are available are in excess of 1,000kg, says Angus, and getting heavier due to Stage V engines – cleaner off-road engines with reduced emissions. “There’s a lack of consultation and a lack of understanding of the effect this kind of

decision will have on our industry and our ability to remain competitive,” notes Angus. “While the government is doing this, we’re tendering to local authorities who want us to become cleaner and greener and operate emissionsfree equipment which isn’t currently available. They also want us to reduce cutting frequency because they can’t afford to cut 16 times a year; they want us to cut eight times a year. For that, we need diesel powered machines. We’re being backed into a corner.” BALI, with the help of Angus and Glendale’s machinery manager Neal Harper, has responded to proposals by the HMRC and has fought to have the landscaping industry exempt from the withdrawal, but their concerns have so far not been taken into consideration. At the very least, BALI is hoping for clarification on the new rules to ensure none of its members receive a hefty fine if they misinterpret the exemptions. “There are a lot of holes in the proposal at the moment that need to be ironed out. In the coming months, BALI members and other landscapers are

For example, a lot of contractors might have big stores of red diesel, so if they’re not allowed to use this in their machines from April, they need to know when to start running down these supplies. So, a lot of clarification is needed so that companies don’t fall foul of the law.” Until the withdrawal is confirmed, companies will find it difficult to plan ahead; but it’s imperative to keep an eye on the changing legislation as BALI continues to argue on behalf of the landscaping industry for its case to be heard. www.prolandscapermagazine.com

ith the introduction of the updated Industry Code of Practice for Arboriculture Tree Work at Height (ICoP) and the Arboricultural Association Tree Climbing and Aerial Rescue Technical Guide 1 (TG1) over the past 18 months Hi-Line Training has been asked by companies large and small, as well as individual climbers, for bespoke refresher workshops on climbing, aerial rescue and kit compliance. MEET THE SUPPLIER Makita is taking the battery power market by storm with the launch of its XGT platform. Business development director Mark Earles explains how the manufacturer has developed its battery range and why this is the future for Makita

t’s been more than four decades since Makita first delved into battery power. The global tool manufacturer launched its first battery tool with a cord in 1969 and, nine years later, unveiled its first cordless battery machine. Since then, the battery power market has exploded. Now all major power tool manufacturers are producing battery variations of petrol products to keep up with growing demand for the more environmentally friendly alternatives. Makita has been developing its battery technology since the 60s and is using its expertise to its advantage. Alongside its long-running 18V LXT battery, Makita recently launched XGT, a 40VMax battery with a range of tools which support this more powerful system. This new offering from Makita is for professionals who need longer run 16

times and a higher output, not just for outdoor power equipment such as brush cutters and hedge trimmers but also for construction tools such as breakers and circular saws. This is just the start of Makita developing and expanding its battery range, as the manufacturer gears up for pulling out of petrol machines altogether. “Next year, we’re not going to manufacture or sell anymore petrol engine products – it’s all going over to cordless,” says Mark. “The way that the cordless industry is moving, with the efficiencies of the motors and the new battery technology coming on board with XGT, we’re already seeing that

grounds maintenance tenders for local authorities are asking how contractors are reducing their carbon emissions, and battery powered kit is an arguably easy switch to help achieve this. But even with green credentials, battery power would be a difficult sell if it weren’t suitable for the job. Fortunately, Makita has spent decades developing a lithium-ion battery which can stand up to scrutiny. Mark explains that, “Makita is a motor manufacturer, so a lot of the efficiencies in the power tool are not just in the battery but also in the motor design”. Since it was founded in Japan in 1915, Makita has been producing motors. At its factory in Nagoya, it also manufactured repair lighting equipment and transformers before deciding to specialise in electric motors, which it began exporting in 1935. Now, the future for Makita is battery power, says Mark. The company is also investing heavily in training. It already has factory service centres in Milton Keynes, London and Glasgow, each with training facilities, and is looking to open a new factory service centre. Its Milton Keynes factory service centre was recently relocated to a larger site nearby, providing the company with 20,000ft 2 to strengthen its service and repair support as well as its training. Makita also provides Be Safe training for colleges, offering two courses in the safe and correct use of tools – Be Safe Construction and Be Safe Garden Machinery. Earlier in the year, Makita signed a five-year partnership with the Eden Project to supply its cordless machines to maintain the grounds of the vast site and, during lockdown earlier this year, provided Be Safe training to the Eden team over Zoom. “The Eden Project has phased out most of its petrol engine machines and replaced them with battery alternatives,” explains Mark.
