Hello Bideford

Hi, welcome to the March edition of the Link’ Magazine.

With spring nearly here , the Snowdrops and Daffodils are starting to pop up though the ground. Not long now until some welcome warmth is with us.

Just the right time of year to start something new. How about getting out in the countryside for a walk and chat with like minded people?

See page 18 for information on the Ramblers upcoming walks.

Appledore Singers Charity Christmas Concert in aid of Cystic Fibrosis raised £850.

This was our 40th year as a choir so this was an extra special Christmas concert for us. We are a choir who are based in Appledore, who enjoy singing and raising money for various charities. Our Musical Director Pam Beachey is an Appledore lady, and we are accompanied by Chris Beachey, we meet every Monday evening in Appledore Baptist Church.

The Appledore Singers held their annual Christmas Charity concert at Northam Hall and this year our chosen charity was The Cystic Fibrosis Trust which is a charity very dear to one of our members. The Trust focuses on improving care, funding research and providing help for people and families affected by Cystic Fibrosis.

Our compare for the afternoon was Tony Nicholls who knows the choir well and he has always made the most amazing job of comparing our concerts. The choir was accompanied by Chris Beechey and conducted by our Musical Director, Pam Beechey.

The music chosen was a mix of traditional congregational Christmas carols where the audience were invited to join in (as usual we provided carol sheets) and collection of about 15 pieces of music, all of which were Christmassy but more modern than the traditional carols.

Our resident ‘Poet’ Ann Irwin read three of her amusing ditties and limericks which as usual went down well both with us and the audience as they were very humorous.

Halfway through the concert there was a refreshment break served by the choir and a raffle where the prizes were all donated by the choir members. The concert was as resounding success as its was standing room only and was supported by choir family members, friends and the lovely people of Appledore, Northam and Westward Ho! and we raised the amazing sum of £850 for Cystic Fibrosis Trust.

We are now back in new year mode and are busy rehearsing and planning towards our summer concert and are always happy to welcome anyone who would like to join a ladies choir. We would be delighted to see you any Monday evening at between 7 and 7.30 for a ‘taster session’ at Appledore Baptist Church. Feel free to join us, just check out our website site for any information www.Theappledoresingers.co.uk or come join us on Facebook or give us a call on 07772210604 we would love to see you.

Bideford

After the daily deluge and flooding, signs of spring are starting to brighten Bideford. Ford Woods, Port Memorial, and more than forty-two planters across the town are coming alive with new flowers. This seasonal growth adds colour and freshness to public spaces which residents and visitors can enjoy as they explore the Town.

Meanwhile, Bideford is preparing for several important improvements. Work on the historic Pannier Market will begin soon, ensuring this cherished building continues to play a central role in town life. The refurbishment will support its continued use while preserving its unique character.

In addition, Bideford Town Council is relocating within the grounds of Riverbank House. This temporary move will allow renovation work to begin on the Town Hall, securing this historical building’s future.

Community Events

There are plenty of community events on the horizon, giving residents reasons to come together and enjoy town life.

On 14 March 2026, Manor Court will consider Presentments at the Baptist Church. This long-standing civic event remains an important part of Bideford’s calendar, reflecting the Town’s traditions and governance.

Also on 14 March 2026, the Pannier Market will host its first-ever Battle of the Scarecrows Festival. Traders will compete to win the prize for best design, bringing creativity and fun to the Market and offering an opportunity for both residents and visitors to enjoy something fresh and imaginative.

Preparations are also underway for the Bideford Fair and Mayor’s Parade on 6 June 2026. This family-friendly event is a highlight of the Town’s year, and organisers are encouraging people to come and enjoy the fair which will include breathtaking aquatic stunts and the launch of Bideford’s first Cream Tea Festival; look out for updates on entering the baking competition on the Town Council’s Facebook page.

Celebrating Local Achievements

Bideford’s Town Rangers are celebrating their first year at Caddsdown. Their story highlights the positive impact that the Town Rangers have on the Community. A full account of their first year can be read on the Town Council website: www.bideford-tc.gov.uk.

Special Days in Spring

For Mother’s Day – 15 March 2026 - Bideford offers the perfect destination for treating loved ones. Cafés, gift shops, and restaurants across the Town are ready to welcome families. The Pannier Market has a wide range of unique gifts, from handmade goat’s milk skincare products, to pottery, wood-turning creations to artisanal jams, chocolates, sparkling wine, beautifully boxed sweets, jewellery, and home decorations; there is something to suit every taste.

Why not spend the International Day of Happiness 20 March 2026 in Bideford? Sit by the Quay with fish and chips, a cake, or a favourite beverage and enjoy watching the waterbirds and paddleboarders pass with the tides.

Staying Updated

For the latest information on events, projects, and community news, check the Town Council website and Facebook pages. These platforms will provide updates on all upcoming activities and improvements in Bideford.

Bideford is blooming, and the Town’s energy and spirit are evident everywhere you look. From planters and green spaces to fairs and parades, spring is bringing colour, activity, and optimism back to the Community.

8-Year-Old George Hudson Sees Winning Design Showcased

on New Refuse Vehicle

8-year-old George Hudson, from Bideford, was recently invited to Torridge District Council’s new Operational Services Centre after winning a competition to design a new banner for one of the council’ s latest refuse vehicles.

Before George’s artwork was transformed into a large-scale banner and applied to the side of the new vehicle, he spent time with Graphic Designer Jon Lockett to develop and refine his ideas. Together, they adapted the design to ensure it would work effectively at full size and help promote positive recycling habits as the lorry travels across the district.

During the visit, he saw his finished design proudly displayed on the new truck and was presented with a gift to celebrate his achievement and thank him for his contribution. As part of his prize, George was also given a behind the scenes tour of the Centre, visiting the workshop and the wash area where the lorries are cleaned after a day on the country roads.

The newly branded vehicle can now be seen on rounds in the district and residents are encouraged to look out for George’s design as it makes its way through towns and villages across Torridge.

George Hudson, winner of the competition, said: “It was very exciting to see my design on the side of the truck – I didn’t realise it would be so big and on both sides. I’m very happy with it. I really enjoyed having a look around the centre and learning about where my lorry will go. Getting to sit in the lorry was definitely the best bit.”

Four play areas across Torridge to benefit from £210,000 worth of Refurbishment Works

As part of its commitment to improve play spaces across the district, Torridge District Council has announced that four play areas in East-the-Water, Bideford; Hartland and Winkleigh will undergo £210,000 worth of refurbishment works in February and March 2026.

At Pollyfield, East-the-Water, Bideford, the council is working in partnership with the Pollyfield Community Centre to refurbish the infant play area. The Pollyfield Community Centre and local councillors have supported the project with some amazing fundraising events, alongside S106 housing development funds and Council Contribution, to ensure that a more interactive and usable space is created for the community. Local installer TK Play is due to start work on Monday 23 February.

In Winkleigh, after consulting with Winkleigh Councillors and parents of local children, Elms Meadow will undergo a total refurbishment programme receiving all new equipment, with Westcotts Drive gaining a new multi-unit with surfacing and a new bench. Wicksteed Limited is due on site from 2 March to carry out the works.

In Hartland, the Northgate Play Area will also receive a significant upgrade. Kompan Ltd is due on site, from 23 February. Local councillors, Hartland Recreation Ground representatives and parents of local children were involved and consulted with prior to the final design being agreed.

Winkleigh and Hartland sites are being funded by the Government’ s Rural England Prosperity Fund.

For safety, all play areas will be closed and unavailable for the duration of the works. Weather permitting, all projects are expected to be completed in time for the start of the Easter Holidays.
