This is why John Edward Beckwith; Sr. was a pillar of the communities By Debra Blair Abron and The Elite News Family The term “Pillar of the Community” is usually reserved for someone who finds a variety of ways to help his hometown, region or state. Some “pillars” are successful in business and lend support financially. Others are more on the front lines, donating extraordinary amounts of time to worthwhile causes. And then there are those few who just live a lifetime of service, of constantly looking for ways to help others — be it with their time or giving monetarily. I’ve had the privilege of writing about many of them, oftentimes while they’re involved with their good works, and sometimes, when they’ve passed. Today is a time to talk of one who has passed on to a Greater Place., and there is absolutely no doubt where Dr. John Beckwith Sr. is today.

While his friends and family will gather for his service and burial, and tears will most definitely be shed. John has joined his beloved wife Allene Beckwith in heaven with no pain, no fear, no tears. He was always friendly, but never overbearing. He was a true believer, one who witnessed not so much with his words but his actions. As such was when he donated his entire funeral home, on Cedar Crest to my Dad, the late Dr. William Blair, Jr. I’d never heard of someone doing this in our community. Now, I am sure there were those who may have done something like this before, but I only knew of Dr. Beckwith. I was truly amazed by his generosity and kindness! I will always respect him, for the call of honor to my Father and the Elite News. In his line of work, Dr. Beckwith led with an unassuming yet knowledgeable approach that calmed tough situations and led to great decisions. It’s no doubt that the type of leadership he displayed as a successful businessman is the same reason he was so successful in business, becoming one of the area’s most well-known morticians and funeral directors.

Along his pathway, Dr. Beckwith made many friends and influenced many people in line of work. He was instrumental in Golden Gate Funeral Homes growth and its commitment to service — here in Dallas and across the country. I’ve also witnessed some of Dr. Beckwith’s greatest work — his family — who have followed in his footsteps to become church and community leaders, caring individuals, and devotees in efforts to improve in their services rendered to many around the communities in which they live. His children Carolyn and John who I worked with personally were like family to us. It was like we were automatically family. Many times, when referring to Carolyn, my Dad would always come into the office and say things like, “You talk to your sister?” And like their father Carolyn and John were always accommodating and respectful because of the relationship our Fathers had put in place. When we lose someone like Dr. John Beckwith, Sr. we often find ourselves looking around and saying, “Who’s going to fill his shoes?” And it’s a fair question. But if we think back to Dr. Beckwith and those like him who came before, we should already know the answer. They provided a guiding light and were inspirations for others to follow. Rest easy, good, and faithful servant. The torch has been passed, Job Well DONE! Queen Elizabeth II was Queen of the United Kingdom from February 6, 1952 until her death on September 8, 2022.
