District 9 Trustee Justin Henry | September 2019 Dallas ISD continues to show strong gains in academic achievement as measured by the Texas Education Agency’s (TEA) A through F accountability system. With a five-point gain, the district has earned a “B” for the second year in a row, an increase from 81 to 86 points. FiftyTrustee Henry seven percent of all district schools earned an A or B in Dallas ISD’s Local Accountability System, which holds schools to higher standards than even TEA. The A-F grades are a snapshot of how well schools are meeting the needs of students, whether a school is growing its students, how teachers, staff and parents rate their schools, and what students think about their school’s instruction, engagement and culture. TEA accolades in District 9: Several District 9 schools are rightly celebrating their new ratings. Congratulations to these schools’ devoted teachers and administrators, students and parents for your effort and hard work. Irma Rangel Young Women’s Leadership School A rating with 98 points | Booker T. Washington HSPVA A rating with 91 points | Henry B. Gonzalez Elementary A rating with 90 points | Charles Rice Learning Center A rating with 90 points There is a special sense of pride at Martin Luther King Jr. Learning Center where students achieved tremendous academic growth—rising from an “F” to a “B” school this year. The improvement is among the most impressive academic turnarounds in the district. A member of the Accelerating Campus Initiative, or ACE program, King is set to become an exploratory arts campus next school year, affording students the opportunity to explore piano, dance, vocal music and visual art starting as early as pre-K. Board members have acted to reward staff at another ACE campus. At Billy Dade Middle School,
teacher leaders, administrators, counselors and librarians at are sharing in $240,000 in stipends approved by board members. The stipends are incentives designed to retain effective campus leaders at schools where they are most needed. In other campus news: Debaters from Irma Rangel Young Women’s Leadership School placed in the top 16 schools in the recent Plano Senior Debate Tournament. Seniors Valerie Gutierrez and (first-timer) Da’Shayla Ford played prominent roles in the competition. When “Tina: The Tina Turner Musical” opens on Broadway in November, Rangel student Skye Turner will be onstage performing as a young version of the musical legend. Students at John Ireland Elementary and Piedmont Global Middle School have each launched new orchestra programs on campus. To support reading in grades 1-3, Ireland is joining forces with Catch Up and Read and Readers2Leaders to promote its early learners. At CityLab High School, ninth-grader Immanuel Brinson was awarded a bronze medal in the NAACP ACT-SO National Competition for his memorial design project based on civil rights leader Asa Philip Randolph. The project was created in cooperation with Perkins+Will Architects. CityLab 10th-graders have designed a mural as a community-based art project funded by Downtown Dallas, Inc. and the CityLab High School Foundation. The piece, “Zeal, Zest, Verve” will take shape this fall. Mark your calendar for the 2019 College Fair Dallas ISD is sponsoring our FREE annual Districtwide College Fair, 5:30 to 8:30 p.m., Wednesday, Sept. 18, at Ellis Davis Field House. This is a major opportunity for 11th and 12thgraders to meet college representatives, ask questions and collect information about admissions and financial aid. All high school counselors are signing up students to attend and receive free transportation.

It’s always a pleasure to come back to your hometown where you have friends and family there who know and care about you. It would be like when you lived out of town and you come back for a reunion or Cedric J. Scott celebration for a certain event. So you never know how your support inspires a young player in college. I will share two examples of this type of honor. The first one is the quarterback Devante Kincade. He went to Skyline High School, then received a scholarship to Ole Miss and later transferred to Grambling State University where he wanted to be closer to home and it panned out for him and the family. He led the tigers to 2 SWAC Championships and later signed with Hamilton Tiger-Cats in the CFL. The second example is Adrian Hamilton, who played football at Carter High School, went to Texas Tech, transferred to Prairie View A & M to play ball his junior and senior year. In which he later signed with the Dallas Cowboys then the Baltimore Ravens in the NFL. So Congratulations to all these young men who are honored by all of us who understands the big game of football. For the winner of this matchup usually determines who gets the front seat to win the west division of the SWAC Conference. So when you add life skills, academics and teamwork together, the result is a usually a well equipped man capable of serving any community. Now that brings me to this, a reminder of upcoming events leading to the State Fair Classic Football Game at 4:00pm on Saturday, September 28th, 2019.

know you’ve heard this as I’ve said it many times but car crashes change lives. How about if you didn’t Brian Eberstein have a car ? How about your not being able to take the kids to school, go to the grocery store, go see your family and friends. Right. That’s exactly what happens when some idiot on the phone runs into you and the idiot has no insurance. How about your not being able to go to work and you either have no vacation time at all or you’ve used it up. How about those bills piling up that must be paid. Right. No paycheck because of that same thoughtless idiot without insurance or, and this is a big or, the idiot has insurance and that idiot is also a liar and lies to the insurance company about what happened and how the crash occurred. Ok, your saying, how to fix these problems or try. 1) When you’re in a car crash, you need the police. How to get them ? Call 911 and ask. Now. Unless you’re a doctor or otherwise medically trained,
please don’t guess about whether you’re hurt. Your adrenaline is rushing through you and that is as big a mask of injury as any mask you’ve seen at Halloween. No guessing. Please. Tell 911 you need medical attention because you do. That typically means police are coming. 2) If anyone stops and says they saw what happened, get their name and number. That is also a must as the idiot may say he or she is sorry at the scene but later ? He or she says you ran the red light. How do I know ? I’ve seen that happen 1000 times.
