Forms rarely arrive fully defined. More often, we see them emerge gradually through contact and interaction between material and environment. Art has long offered a way of making visible the subtle structures that connect the physical world with the more elusive dimensions of experience. Within the wider framework of The Grammar of Shapes, Traces brings together three artists whose practices explore how form can emerge through these encounters.
For Laura Medcalf, painting takes place at the meeting point between land and open water. Working with soluble, light-sensitive crystals and gestural marks, she immerses her surfaces in rivers, lakes and seas. Sunlight, minerals, currents and weather become collaborators in the work. The resulting pieces do not depict landscape so much as hold its presence: traces of light, water and time suspended within the surface.
Amy-Leigh Bird begins with fragments gathered from the edges of rivers and coastlines: bones, seaweed, sponge and other overlooked remains shaped by tide and erosion. Through printmaking, photography and sculpture, these materials are given renewed attention. What might once have been dismissed as debris is reseen as structure, memory and form
In Emz Finch’s paintings, colour and sky open into spaces of reflection. Drawing on a lifelong attentiveness to trees and landscape, her works move between observation and emotion, where gesture and colour expand into atmospheric fields.
Across these practices, nature acts less as subject than as co-author. Water, weather, colour and time participate in the making of the work. Forms appear slowly, as traces of the forces moving through landscape, material and perception - Elisa Martinelli, director at ArtMoorHouse
