2 ‘Waah Waah!!’ It’s almost 7 a.m. No, that’s not

my alarm clock, it’s my baby brother, Vlad. He’s 12 months old and he always wakes up at this time and starts crying for his milk. My other brother Maksim … he’s 8 years old … is still sleeping in the bed next to mine. Then I hear my mum: ‘Ivan! Get up or you’ll be late for school, and wake up Maksim!’

Because I’m 12 years old and the eldest, I help my mum a lot with Vlad. Here we are playing outside with his favourite toy! Maybe he’ll be a Formula 1 driver one day! 2

Instead, I love planes! When I have time, I watch programmes about them on TV. This is me at one of my favourite museums in Saint Petersburg. I have lots of models of planes in my room too. That’s why I’d like a room of my own so I can have more space for my things, but at the moment I have to share with Maksim. Maybe one day…

I go into the kitchen where mum is already making breakfast. We always have a cooked breakfast, porridge or sometimes eggs, and fruit too.

This morning there are strawberries! Yummy! And of course, a nice, hot cup of tea. 4

Here in Russia it can get really cold in winter so we need something hot before going to school. Sometimes it’s -25°C brrr! But don’t worry … our house is always nice and warm and we have wooden floors in all four rooms in our flat. Winter can be fun too, even if it’s cold. Here’s a picture of me and Maksim playing in the snow! 5

4 My school isn’t far

from home so I usually walk there or I go with my kick scooter. Here I am outside the school. I don’t have to wear a uniform at school. I usually wear black trousers, a shirt and a cardigan. Last week we had a special day. There were maths games and the teacher told us to wear something nice, so I wore a jacket.

This morning, my maths teacher is waiting for me at the entrance. ‘Ivan! Guess what! You won the maths games! Congratulations!’ Wow! I can’t believe it! I’m really happy. There were lots of difficult problems to do!

5 Here in Russia, we

go to school from September till the end of May so we have really long holidays! Yippee! My mum and dad both love the beach. We usually go to Sochi but last year we went to Crimea. Here are some photos of us on holiday. It was great!

There are different schools in Russia. I go to what we call the ‘Ordinary School’ where we have more time to do sports. Ah, I forgot to tell you … I love swimming! I’m in the sports class in my school. All my classmates are swimmers like me and we belong to a team called ‘Olympic Reserve Ekran.’ I started swimming when I was three years old and I can’t think of my life without a swimming pool! Our school is really near the pool and we go there every afternoon after school at 1.30 p.m. I’d love to swim in the Olympic Games one day! 9

10 ‘Well they can at least hold the big toes of the

Atlantis Statues at the entrance of the New Hermitage,’ says Andrei, another classmate. Eh? We all laugh. ‘No, you don’t understand,’ says Andrei. ‘It brings good luck!’ ‘That’s true,’ says our teacher, ‘but it’s usually good luck for people getting married!’ We all laugh again, but it’s a nice idea. This team is going to do a tour of Russia and swim against other teams, so we try to think of other places to take them for good luck.

11 ‘What about the statue of Ostap Bender … you

know … the one with the chair?’ says one of my classmates. ‘They say that if you sit in the chair and touch his nose you’ll get what you ask for.’ Ostap Bender is the character in a book called The Twelve Chairs and others written by IIya lIf and Yevgeni Petrov. ‘Yes, that’s nice too,’ says our teacher.

14 When I get home, there’s a surprise. My dad is a

police officer and he has come home early from work. He says: ‘Ivan, I met your teacher and she told me you won the maths games! Fantastic! Let’s go to your favourite place in Saint Petersburg!’ ‘Do you mean the Flight Simulator?’ I ask excited. ‘Yes, of course!’ says my dad. I can’t believe it! I love this place! Real pilots use it to practise too. I can choose which airport I want to leave from and where I want to arrive. There’s always a real pilot next to me to help me! This is a great place to go if you want to try something new. What an end to a perfect day!
