Buck’s new life in the cold north is difficult. He hates Spitz who becomes his rival. He works hard and is often exhausted. But he becomes stronger and begins to feel his primitive instincts. One night he fights with Spitz. In the end Buck wins and becomes the team leader.
Buck loves John because he is the ideal master. They both recover near the river. Buck saves his life from the river rapids. He also becomes a celebrity when he carries a very heavy load alone. Meanwhile his primitive instincts grow and every night he hears the ancient call.

It is 1897 and gold is found in the cold north. Buck, a four-year-old big dog, lives happily with his family in California. Manuel, the family's gardener, needs money. He steals Buck and sells him to a foreigner who sends big dogs to the Cold North. The man throws Buck into a train going to Seattle.
YES, MANUEL. BUCK’S A GENTLEMAN. HE’LL ALWAYS PROTECT MY CHILDREN.
Perrault and Francois must leave the expedition and sell the dog team to a mail carrier. The dogs work hard because they carry the mail for a long way. Buck’s new life is difficult but at night he lies near the fire and listens to his ancestors’ call. After their last journey the dogs are exhausted but the mail carrier must leave and sells Buck’s team to three American gold searchers.

One day, while Buck is in the forest with his new wolf friend, some Indians destroy John’s camp and kill men and dogs. Buck furiously attacks and kills most of the Indians. Then he disappears into the forest with the wolves. After that, an Indian legend tells of a terrible Ghost Dog that visits John’s tomb every year.
NOW YOU KNOW YOUR PLACE. IF YOU’RE BAD YOU GET THE CLUB, IF YOU’RE GOOD YOU GET THE FOOD.
In Seattle Buck is sold to a man in a red sweater. The man teaches Buck “the law of the club”: a dog must always obey a man with a club. Buck and another dog, Curly, are sold to two Canadian officers, Perrault and Francois. They travel by ship to the Yukon, a very cold place in northwest Canada.

The Americans have no experience. The dogs are tired and hungry and need a rest, but the Americans overload the sled and start the journey. One of them, Hal, beats Buck repeatedly. Finally, they arrive at John Thornton’s camp. John saves Buck from Hal, who leaves immediately. But the ice is thin: men and dogs sink and die.
SO THAT’S THE WAY THEY SLEEP… DIG A HOLE IN THE SNOW AND GET INTO IT!

GET UP, YOU LAZY ANIMAL!
I CAN’T MAKE IT, YOU STUPID MAN! I WON’T GET UP!
STOP IT! IF YOU HIT THE DOG AGAIN I’LL KILL YOU!
Buck’s first day in the Yukon is a nightmare. He sees the snow for the first time and starts to work in a dog team. He learns quickly from two experienced dogs, Dave and Spitz, the team leader. Some huskies attack the dogs and brutally kill Curly. During the night it snows a lot and Buck can’t sleep. Finally, he learns from another dog how to sleep in the snow. 21

BLOG!
My name’s Malina Sullivan, I’m a twelve-year-old student and I’m a blogger, too! I’m quite short, with long straight black hair and dark brown eyes. I live in Yate, a town in south-west England near Bristol and Bath. Yate is the birthplace of Johanne Kathleen Rowling. Do you know who she is? Well, she’s the creator of Harry Potter! My parents are Canadian and Irish. Lusa, my mum is of Inuit origin (she was born in northern Quebec, that’s where my grandparents still live) and Dad is from Dublin. I have a baby brother, Patrick and a sister, Lynn, who is fifteen. She sings and plays the guitar in a girl band, The Shampoo. We have got a husky dog, Curly, and a canary called Sunny. I like reading manga, cooking, sport… and blogging, of course!

She’s the goalkeeper, so she has a great responsibility! This month Terry is training with her team in Wales. Brian and Jane are on holiday with our grandparents, Lora and Albert. They’re at the seaside in Italy, in a town called Viareggio. Grandpa and grandma have got a house there. Brian has got two e-pals in Viareggio, two local girls called Maggie and Paola.
