Chapter 1 Baseball
Monday : 7.00 a.m. (seven o’clock) : San Francisco

Jed Masters is driving to work. He is on the Bay Bridge and he’s going towards downtown San Francisco. He can see the tall buildings of San Francisco. The buildings are shining in the morning sunlight.
Twenty minutes later Jed drives past Mel’s, a famous American diner. Jed often has breakfast in Mel’s, but he is too busy today. It is Thanksgiving soon and Jed is going to buy a present for his son, Gil.

Gil Masters and his friends are in a big park in London. Gil’s best friend, Sato, is sitting next to Gil under a big tree. And Gil’s new girlfriend is sitting next to Sato. Her name is Jodie. They are watching a game of baseball. A young man in an orange sweater is standing near the tree. He looks at Gil and his friends. Then he looks at their bags. Sato stands up and picks up a baseball bat. One of the players throws the baseball towards Sato. Sato hits the ball, then he drops the bat and runs.

Monday : 3.30 p.m. (half past three) : The Hard Rock Cafe : London
“Where did you learn to play baseball so well?” Jodie asks Sato. “I’m Japanese,” answers Sato. “We’re crazy about baseball in Japan.” “And we’re crazy about Thanksgiving in America,” says Gil. “And it’s Thanksgiving soon. I’m going to cook a Thanksgiving meal and I want you all to come. And I’m going to pay for these drinks, too.” “I can pay for my own drink, thanks,” says Sato. Gil smiles. He knows Sato very well. Gil takes an ice-cube from his drink. Then he puts the ice-cube down Sato’s shirt. Everyone laughs. “No, I’m paying,” says Gil and he puts his hand into his jacket pocket. But there is nothing in the pocket. “Okay. Very funny. Ha! Ha! Who’s got my wallet? Sato?” “I haven’t got your wallet. I’ve got a wet shirt,” says Sato. Gil looks in the other pocket. It isn’t there. “Okay, the joke’s over,” says Gil. “Someone stole my wallet in the park.”

A young man in an orange sweater walks into a language school near Hyde Park. The woman at the reception desk says “Hi, Nic. How are you?” The young man smiles, but he doesn’t reply. The young man walks up the stairs and goes into a classroom. He is late. His class started at half past three. “Good afternoon, Nic,” says the teacher. “Good afternoon,” replies Nic. “Sorry I’m . . . I . . . I . . . in the park . . .” “Don’t worry. Sit down,” says the teacher. The young man doesn’t speak. Then the teacher repeats the words “Don’t worry. Sit down.” But this time he says them in Russian. The young man understands and he smiles. He likes to hear his own language. He sits down at a desk.

Monday : 4.40 p.m. (twenty to five) : a street in London
Gil and Sato come out of The Hard Rock Cafe and walk along the street. A young man in an orange sweater walks out of a building. Sato sees the young man and thinks he knows him. Suddenly he remembers. “Look,” he says to Gil. “That boy was in the park.” Sato shouts at the young man. “I remember you. You were in the park. I know what you are. You’re a thief!” The young man doesn’t understand. He tries to talk but he can’t remember any English. Then he says something in Russian. Sato grabs the young man. The young man falls to the ground. “Stop, Sato!” shouts Gil. “What are you doing?”

David Sims is seven years old. He is in a children’s hospital and he is very ill. A nurse is reading to David.
A young woman comes into the room. The nurse sees her and closes the book. She says “Your sister is here, David.” The young woman walks to David’s bed. She kisses him on the forehead and gently touches his face. She looks sad. “Hello, David,” she says. “Hello, Jodie,” replies David. “Don’t worry, Jodie. It’s all right. I’m fine.” They both smile. Jodie tells her brother about Gil and about the baseball game and about The Hard Rock Cafe. “I want to meet Gil. Can I?” asks David. “And I want to go to The Hard Rock Cafe,” he says. “And I want to play baseball.”

Chapter 2 Breakfast
Tuesday : 8.30 a.m. (half past eight) :
an office : Tokyo, Japan
Koto Kanazawa is a very rich businessman. He owns a large art business. He is in his office, but he is not working - he is thinking about Sato, his son. Sato is at college in London. Koto phones his son every day at this time. In London it is half past eleven on Monday night. Koto picks up the phone and dials Sato’s number in London. “Hello, Sato,” he says when he hears Sato’s voice. “I did something very bad this evening,” says Sato. Koto says nothing. He waits for his son to speak. Sato tells his father about Gil and Jodie and about Gil’s wallet. Then he talks about Nic, the Russian boy. “I called Nic a thief,” says Sato. Koto listens carefully but he still says nothing. Then Sato tells his father that he was angry. Now Koto speaks. “Why?” he asks. “Why were you angry?”

“Because Nic is a thief,” Sato replies. His father says nothing. “I don’t know he is a thief. I think he is a thief,” Sato says. “Are you jealous of Jodie?” Koto asks. Sato is silent for a moment. Suddenly he realizes that his father is right. He is jealous of Jodie. He is afraid that his best friend, Gil, will spend a lot of time with her. Sato feels very ashamed. “What can I do?” asks Sato. “Do what you think is right,” replies his father.

Sato picks up the phone and presses some numbers. Gil answers. “Hello, Gil Masters here.” “It’s me,” says Sato. “It’s late,” says Gil angrily. “It’s nearly midnight.” Then after a few seconds “Is anything wrong?” “I want to talk to you,” says Sato. “About that boy.” But Gil is angry with Sato. “You didn’t push me, Sato,” says Gil. “You pushed the Russian boy, Nic. Talk to him.” “I don’t know where he is,” says Sato. “I’m meeting Nic at Luigi’s tomorrow morning. Come at ten o’clock. You can talk to him there.” Then Gil hangs up. Sato feels very sad. He remembers his father’s words, “Do what you think is right.” “It’s not always easy,” thinks Sato.

Two young French girls are looking at a shop window. The girls do not know there is a thief behind them. The thief is wearing roller blades. “Do you like that jacket?” asks one of the girls. “No. I don’t. I don’t like the colour,” replies her friend. “And it’s very expensive,” her friend replies. Just as the girl says this the thief steals her purse from her bag. The girl feels nothing. “Come on. Let’s go for a coffee. Look, there’s a place called Luigi’s. Let’s go there.” The two girls walk towards Luigi’s. The thief skates away in the opposite direction.

Gil is talking to Sato. “A very strange thing happened this morning. A policeman phoned me,” Gil says. “A policeman! What did he say?” asks Sato. “Someone sent a large brown envelope to the police station. And my wallet was inside. Look!” Gil shows his wallet to Sato. “That’s amazing! What about your money?” asks Sato. “It’s very strange,” replies Gil. “Very little money is missing. Some American money. About twenty dollars, I think. But look! Four hundreddollar bills – they’re still here.”

Chapter 3 The Russian boy
Late Tuesday night : St Petersburg : Russia
Tatiana is walking along the Moyka Canal. It is nearly midnight. It is very cold. There is a thin layer of ice on the canal and the path is icy. Tatiana has two jobs. During the day she works in a factory. In the evenings she is a cleaner in a museum. Tatiana is going home. She is tired and hungry. She is thinking about the money she'll earn. She sends most of the money to London to her son, Nic. He is studying English. One day Nic will be a doctor and he will return to St Petersburg.

When the train stops, they get off and walk past some very old grey buildings. “These buildings are part of the university,” says Jodie. “Oxford University is the oldest university in Britain.” “It’s amazing,” says Gil. “But we didn’t come here to see the buildings,” says Jodie. Gil and Jodie walk on until they get to a large grey building. “Here we are,” she says.

“Is this part of the university?” asks Gil. “No,” replies Jodie. “It’s a children's hospital. I come here every evening to see my brother. His name is David. He really wants to meet you. Talk to him. Tell him about baseball and America and Golden Gate Park.”
“Come on. Let’s go in,” says Gil and he puts his arm around Jodie’s shoulder. “David will be waiting,” he adds.

Sato goes running in the park four or five times a week. Gil often goes with him. But tonight Sato is alone. After his run Sato goes to his room and turns on his computer. He checks his email. He has two messages. One is from his mother in Tokyo and one is from Gil. He opens Gil’s email and reads. Hi Sato Sorry about tonight. I tried to phone you, but you weren’t at home. I went to Oxford with Jodie this afternoon. Can you meet me tomorrow morning? I have something important to tell you. How about 8 o’clock at Luigi’s? See you there. Gil Hi Sato

He’s in hospital and he is very ill. He might die.” Everyone looks shocked. “David needs to go to America for a very expensive operation.” “How can we help?” asks Sato. “How can we get money to help David?” “I can swim,” says Nic. Everyone looks at Nic. “So what? I can swim, too,” says Sato.

“Take a look at this photo, Kate. What do you think?” says Jed. He takes a photo out of his pocket.

Koto Kanazawa usually phones his son. But tonight Sato phoned his father. Sato told his father about David and about ‘The Expresso Project’. Koto listened very carefully. Koto walks to a small restaurant. He eats in the same restaurant every night. He always sits alone and he never talks. He orders sushi and green tea.
“‘The Expresso Project!’” Koto says to himself. “Perhaps I can help.” He finishes his meal and walks quickly back to his office.

Chapter 5 The Expresso Project
Early Saturday morning : Hyde Park : London
About fifty young people are waiting in Hyde Park. Some of them are wearing running shorts. Others have bikes or scooters. And some people are wearing funny clothes. Jodie is with Nic. “What is this ‘Expresso Project’?” asks Jodie. Nic has to think very quickly. He thinks in Russian, but he speaks in English. “Expresso,” he says. “An expresso . . . is a small coffee. It’s black . . . and strong and . . . you drink it very quickly . . .” Then Nic says something in Russian and skates off. He is talking to Jed. Luigi is serving expresso coffees. The Japanese woman comes into the coffee shop. The woman stands quietly behind Sato. She puts a little envelope next to Sato’s hand. The envelope has a picture of Mount Fuji on it. Sato looks at the envelope. He knows what is inside. “This is from your father,” says Sato’s mother. “It is for ‘The Expresso Project’.” “Sato, aren’t you going to say ‘hello’ to your mother?” asks Gil. But Sato can’t speak. He is too happy.

Sunday : 8.00 p.m. (eight o'clock) : A police station
Greg Taylor is a policeman. He has a special job this week. His job is to find the pickpockets in Covent Garden in London. Greg Taylor is in a room full of TV monitors. Greg uses the monitors to see what is happening in Covent Garden. On the screen he can see a busker outside the underground station and a juggler outside a theatre. There is also someone on roller blades. Greg doesn’t know that this is the thief.

Then she writes the address of a police station on the front of the envelope. Jodie writes in green ink. Jodie puts a little money in a box. The words ‘For David’ are on the side of the box.

Jodie is in Covent Garden again. She is on her roller blades. She is going to steal money. Jodie hates stealing. She is doing this for David. Jodie needs the money to pay for his operation. She hopes it will save his life. Greg Taylor, the policeman, is still
looking at the monitors in the police station. He sees something very interesting. Greg sees a young woman wearing a baseball cap and roller blades. He remembers her.
Jodie is waiting and looking. She doesn’t know there are police cameras in the street and that Greg Taylor can see her. Jodie sees a man. He is looking
in a shop window. Jodie looks around. Then she skates up behind the man.

A woman saw the accident. She goes to the phone box and dials 999. A man answers and she asks for an ambulance. She says it is an emergency. She tells him that a young woman crashed into a wall on her skates and that she is unconscious. She is near Covent Garden underground station. Ten minutes later an ambulance and a police car arrive at Covent Garden. Two men get out of the ambulance. They look at Jodie and move her into a special position. Then they put a collar around her head and neck. They don’t want Jodie to move her head and neck. One man gets a stretcher from the ambulance. Then both men lift Jodie onto the stretcher. There are lots of people. A policeman is asking them questions. Above their heads are police cameras. Greg Taylor is watching everything on the TV monitor. He knows that the injured girl is a thief.
