KELLY MADSEN Altar’d Studio Owner/ Hairstylist

Allison has lived in the Black Hills her entire life and has never felt the desire to leave. As Rapid City has grown, she has come to appreciate the “big small-town” feel the area has developed. She values the balance of connection and opportunity without losing a strong sense of community.

For Allison, what makes the region special is the blend of city and country life. From dining, shopping, and recreation to the easy access to the Black Hills, she enjoys the ability to disconnect, spend time in nature, or simply slow down. It’s that variety that continues to make the Black Hills feel like home to her.

At Altar’d Studio, Kelly prioritizes ongoing education, transparent business practices, and a supportive culture that allows stylists to build careers aligned with their goals. Lauren’s ultimate goal is to see more women not only enter the coaching profession, but remain in it long after starting families. She has observed a growing number of young women leaving coaching due to a lack of support, and she is passionate about changing that narrative. Through her involvement in coaching networks, Lauren has mentored many emerging coaches, consistently sharing the message that it is possible to build both a successful coaching career and a fulfilling family life. She encourages women to define success on their own terms—whether that means bringing their children to practice, adjusting their work hours, or choosing to work for organizations.

Monument Health Foundation Development Officer
Kelsie encourages those beginning their careers to trust themselves. Early in her journey in healthcare fundraising, she often second-guessed her instincts, questioning whether she was making the right decisions or meeting expectations. Over time, she realized that intuition often points toward one’s greatest passion and potential for impact. She believes that when work is approached with honesty, integrity, and a commitment to doing the right thing, it is not only acceptable—but important—to take risks and follow one’s instincts. For Kelsie, trusting herself has opened the door to meaningful opportunities aligned with her values. She credits this mindset—whether collaborating with donors, leading projects, or managing multiple responsibilities—as one of the most important factors in building a fulfilling and successful career.

Certified Nurse Practitioner/ Clinic Director
Joel is committed to maintaining his clinic’s role as a leading resource in men’s health in Rapid City, providing safe, effective guidance around hormone use and overall wellness. He envisions continued growth for the clinic, including expansion into a larger facility and the ability to offer a broader range of services such as peptide therapies, injury treatments, and care for erectile dysfunction. To support this vision, Joel actively pursues ongoing education through certifications and specialized training. He is dedicated to staying at the forefront of his field and translating that knowledge into better care and outcomes for his patients.

Pondering Big questions of the universe

Mercedes encourages those entering her field to lead with humility and curiosity, recognizing that every child brings a unique story shaped by biology, environment, and experience. She emphasizes the importance of grounding work in data while never losing sight of the human context that gives it meaning. She believes strong relationships are foundational, encouraging professionals to view families as partners in discovery rather than data points. Mercedes also advocates for equitable access, understanding that the systems built today will shape outcomes for future generations. Committed to both growth and impact, she stresses the importance of staying current with research while allowing real-world classroom experience to guide its application.

Fehrin considers the Black Hills home, drawn by its strong sense of community, deep connection to the land, and the way people consistently support one another. She has rarely spent more than a short time away, often finding herself homesick for the Hills. She completed her K–12 education in Belle Fourche, continued her studies at Black Hills State University, and began her teaching and coaching career in Rapid City before settling just outside of town.

Jimmy draws inspiration from the people he has worked alongside throughout his career—especially frontline caregivers and mentors who lead quietly and consistently. His experience in the military, clinical roles, and later in leadership has reinforced the importance of teamwork, accountability, and putting others first. He is motivated by leaders who listen, remain grounded, and make decisions that genuinely support their teams and communities. Be yourself, don't be afraid to suck at something new. Find a mentor and always ask questions."

Architect
Mitchell hopes architecture in South Dakota will continue to value thoughtful design and planning, recognizing the impact it has on people and communities. While he appreciates the state’s slower pace, he believes it should not come at the expense of innovation. As a member of the AIA South Dakota Board of Directors, Mitchell actively advocates for the profession, with a particular focus on elevating younger voices. He is committed to helping the next generation of architects get involved and play a meaningful role in shaping the future of their communities.

IndigiGenius Owner

Mason views AI as a powerful tool that can significantly accelerate work, but he emphasizes that it should never replace critical thinking or problem-solving. He believes in using available tools to build meaningful solutions and address real needs, noting that creating value for others will always remain essential. He also recognizes that AI amplifies whatever direction it is applied toward, making intentional and thoughtful use critical. Mason is focused on leveraging technology in ways that drive outcomes benefiting the greatest number of people.

Kelsey considers the Black Hills home, having been born and raised in the region. Surrounded by its natural beauty and endless outdoor opportunities, she always knew it was where she wanted to raise her family. She attended the University of Central Arkansas, where she played college soccer, earned her RN and APRN licenses, and had the opportunity to teach. It was also where she met her husband. She often shares a memorable story from their first date—telling him she planned to move back to the Black Hills and that if he wasn’t interested, he was wasting his time. He replied that he’d at least like to look at a map and visit before deciding. Now, nearly 15 years into their marriage and more than a decade living in the Black Hills, he has become a true fan of the area.

MICHAEL LUEDEMAN
M & M Sales Co-Owner/Operator
Michael envisions a future where he can one day pass his business on to one of his children. He has experienced consistent year-over-year growth, with his team often operating at a fast pace, and he expects that momentum to continue. Over the past decade, he has witnessed significant changes within the tire industry and remains committed to staying ahead of them. Michael regularly attends industry conferences to keep up with emerging trends and identify strategies to strengthen his business. While he acknowledges uncertainty tied to evolving government policies and global tariffs, Michael remains focused on navigating these challenges thoughtfully—working to maintain stability without placing unnecessary strain on his customers.

6Throne Barbershop Founder & Head of Culture
In 2016, when Dom first became interested in cutting hair, there was a noticeable lack of barbering services in Rapid City. After attending barber school in Colorado, he had opportunities to stay elsewhere, but recognizing what was missing in his hometown motivated him to return. Dom moved back with the intention of building something that didn’t yet exist and pursuing his vision in the place that raised him. He believes Rapid City is a community where hard work speaks for itself and consistency matters. Being able to build a business, serve his community, and help elevate the local barbering industry continues to drive him.
Watching someone regain confidence or find clarity through honest human connection is what continues to push me forward."
Jake believes the roofing and construction industry needs to slow down, operate with greater honesty, and focus on delivering the right repair—not simply the most profitable one. He recognizes that homeowners are often caught between contractors and insurance carriers, creating a process that can feel confusing and frustrating. As technology and AI continue to grow in the industry, Jake emphasizes the importance of not replacing human judgment with systems that only get it partially right. He believes customers deserve real conversations, full accountability, and a genuine commitment to quality. His focus is on building a company that proves it is possible to be successful, ethical, and people-first while helping move the industry in a healthier direction.

Riding his Harley in the Hills

General Manager(RNB) & Owner(CIF)
Karen recognizes that both of her professions require discipline, drive, and courage. As creative fields, baking and photography demand consistent practice and a strong commitment to continuous learning. She believes it is essential to remain open to new techniques and alternative approaches in order to grow within the industry. Equally important to Karen is building relationships and fostering a sense of community. She values the mindset of prioritizing community over competition, believing it is the most supportive way to serve clients while helping everyone thrive.

Brady recognizes that the accounting industry is evolving rapidly, driven by advancements in technology and the rise of AI. While some may believe the need for accountants is diminishing, he is focused on shifting that perception. He believes that although the role of the accountant may look different in five to ten years, it will remain just as important—if not more vital. As tax laws grow increasingly complex, accounting standards continue to change, and technology becomes more sophisticated, Brady sees accountants stepping into the role of trusted advisors, helping individuals and businesses navigate these challenges.

Pennington County Director of Buildings & Grounds
Davis values that his work has a meaningful, real-world impact. The systems he builds and maintains shape how people experience their community every day— often without being noticed, which he believes is exactly the point. When systems function properly, buildings are safer, and teams are supported, people’s lives are quietly improved. He takes that responsibility seriously. For Davis, the work is not about recognition, but about creating a community that functions well for those who live in it. He is motivated by a desire to ensure his daughter grows up in a place that works, and that the people he serves feel confident their government is committed to getting it right.

Belle Flowers + Co Owner
Brittany encourages others to focus on progress, not perfection, and to avoid trying to do everything alone. She believes in building relationships early, learning from other business owners, and collaborating whenever possible, knowing that strong networks create valuable opportunities. She also emphasizes the importance of enjoying the journey. While running a business can be challenging, Brittany believes it’s essential to have fun and not let fear of failure prevent taking smart risks. In her experience, growth often comes from stepping outside of comfort zones rather than staying within them.

Susan values that her work provides a unique lens into the organization and allows her to collaborate with teams across all areas of the company. She recognizes that finance touches every decision and takes pride in translating complex information into thoughtful, practical solutions. She also enjoys mentoring others, helping them build confidence, develop their skills, and understand how their work contributes to the bigger picture. For Matt, the ability to help others while staying connected to the community makes his work both fulfilling and rewarding.

Ally envisions a visitor industry that is more intentional, sustainable, and deeply connected to the communities it serves. She believes the future of tourism should balance economic impact with quality of life for residents, emphasizing thoughtful growth, workforce development, and authentic storytelling. Ally sees herself contributing by championing collaboration across industries, embracing innovation and data-driven strategies, and ensuring tourism remains a positive force for community pride and long-term prosperity. She is committed to helping shape a visitor economy that is resilient, inclusive, and positioned for continued success, while continuing to grow both personally and professionally.

Jesse values the opportunity his work provides to mentor and lead others in a meaningful way. While football serves as the platform, he believes the true purpose lies in developing strong individuals, building leaders, and helping others find a clear path forward in life. As an owner and head coach, Jesse is passionate about creating real opportunities for players and staff by providing structure, support, and a system they can rely on. While he has a deep love for the game itself, he finds even greater fulfillment in guiding others as they grow in confidence, discipline, and self-belief. For Jesse, helping others develop a sense of direction, accountability, and pride—while representing Rapid City in a positive way—is what makes his work truly rewarding.

Ma Cualli

Amber grew up in South Dakota before leaving the state for school and military service, spending approximately 12 years away. She returned to Rapid City for a role in the arts and has chosen to stay for a variety of reasons. At times, she reflects— alongside friends—on whether Rapid City offers everything they need. Yet there is an intangible quality that continues to draw them to the area rather than larger or more global cities. Amber believes it may be the access to the outdoors or the character of a place that hasn’t lost its authenticity. For her, Rapid City provides the freedom to be herself, along with the flexibility and space to continue growing—both personally and professionally.

Beyond personal success, Madison is driven by a desire to build generational wealth for both her children and the agents she mentors. Becoming a mother has strengthened that focus, motivating her to create something meaningful that her children can witness and learn from. She is equally passionate about showing other young professionals that it is possible to achieve financial freedom and build a lasting legacy without leaving their community or compromising their values. What inspires Madison most is the opportunity to stay deeply connected to her community while building something larger than herself. Through mentoring agents, supporting local businesses, and serving her clients, she is creating a ripple effect that strengthens the Black Hills.

The Sour

Jennifer envisions a healthcare system—particularly in behavioral health—that is accessible, innovative, and community-centered, where patients receive timely, holistic care and mental and physical health are fully integrated. She sees the future of healthcare leveraging data, technology, and strong community partnerships to deliver efficient, compassionate care while proactively strengthening resilience and supporting families. She contributes to this vision by combining her experience in healthcare operations, community engagement, and Lean Six Sigma process improvement. Jennifer focuses on optimizing processes, enhancing patient care, and fostering collaboration across teams, while also developing programs that improve access, quality, and outcomes. She is passionate about mentoring others, encouraging innovation, and empowering individuals to take risks and prioritize community impact. Through strategic partnerships, thoughtful problem-solving, and a strong commitment to service, Jennifer is working to advance adaptive, inclusive, and sustainable healthcare systems—ensuring every patient and family receives the care, resources, and support they deserve.

Commercial Relationship Manager
Joel advises that this career takes years to truly learn, which can be both encouraging and challenging. While those ahead understand the learning curve and don’t expect immediate mastery, he notes that patience will be tested. He often describes his mindset as becoming “patiently impatient,” a perspective that develops with time and experience. He emphasizes the importance of building a strong foundation, particularly in financial analysis, noting that many lenders value this experience and often wish they had developed it earlier in their careers. For those just starting out, Joel acknowledges that having many questions is normal and recommends batching them so managers and colleagues can respond more efficiently—a practice that is both respectful and appreciated. He also stresses the importance of respecting others’ time, especially when interacting with leadership, emphasizing the need to come prepared and purposeful in conversations. And with a bit of humor, Joel adds one final piece of advice: use “Reply All” sparingly and only when it’s truly necessary.

Resources/ Practice Manager
Eleanor credits Commander Neil Richardson, a former Wing Commander who later served as Legislative Liaison to the Office of the Secretary of the Air Force, as a defining influence on her professional journey. Despite holding one of the highest leadership positions she has witnessed, his impact on her came through humility and service. During a difficult period at Joint Base McGuire—following a traumatic delivery and her husband’s open-heart surgery—Commander Richardson and his wife, Melissa, stepped in without hesitation to support her family. They cooked meals, checked in daily, and even helped with household tasks during a time of great need. That experience redefined leadership for Eleanor. His example demonstrated that true leadership is rooted in presence, compassion, and service.

Bear Property Management CEO
Nathan values that his work provides a unique lens into the organization and allows him to collaborate with teams across all areas of the company. He recognizes that finance touches every decision and takes pride in translating complex information into thoughtful, practical solutions. He also enjoys mentoring others, helping them build confidence, develop their skills, and understand how their work contributes to the bigger picture. Knowing that his efforts support reliable, affordable energy for the communities served—while also strengthening internal relationships—makes his work both challenging and deeply rewarding.

Aflac Market Director of South Dakota
Amber values the people at the center of her work—both the team she leads and the families and businesses they serve. She takes pride in watching her team show up with heart, compassion, and purpose, knowing their work truly makes a difference. She views providing financial protection during some of life’s most difficult moments as more than a job—it is both a responsibility and a privilege. Witnessing the relief, gratitude, and sense of security it brings reinforces the impact of what they do. For Amber, helping people feel supported when they need it most is what fuels her passion and keeps her inspired.

Ashlea and her husband were initially drawn to the Black Hills for its access to outdoor activities and the sense that it would be an ideal place to raise their family. However, it is the people of Rapid City who have truly made it feel like home. She has found a unique sense of kindness in the community—something that stands out compared to other places they have lived. In less than three years, they have built meaningful friendships that have grown into a strong support system, making it difficult to imagine living anywhere else. While the connections they’ve formed are what rooted them here, Ashlea and her family also continue to appreciate the abundant outdoor opportunities the region offers.
