THE ART OF THE

IRISH GOODBYE People who know me well all agree on one thing: I am the undisputed king of the Irish goodbye. There is only one thing I love more than attending a great social event: quietly “ghosting” my way out when I’ve decided it’s time to leave. I have perfected the art of disappearing without fanfare. No long goodbyes. No standing around the front door for another 45 minutes. No “I really should get going” followed by three more conversations. When I’m ready to go, I simply vanish. Of course, more intimate occasions like weddings, birthday parties, cocktail parties, and other gatherings where people actually notice your absence present more of a challenge for this vanishing act. Here are some methods to master the Irish Goodbye at a cocktail party: 1. THE BATHROOM DISAPPEARANCE This is the classic. Announce that you’re going to the bathroom and simply never return. Your friends may assume you fell in, went home, or were kidnapped. By the time they figure it out, you’re already in your pajamas. 2. THE “I’M GETTING A DRINK. CAN I BRING YOU BACK SOMETHING?” EXIT Casually head to the bar then ease confidently toward the door, keep walking, get in your car, and drive away. 3. THE COAT-AND-GO This requires stealth. Wait until everyone is engaged in a particularly fascinating conversation, quietly retrieve your coat, make eye contact with absolutely no one, and slip out the door like you’re escaping a crime scene. Bonus points if nobody notices until the next morning. 4. THE STRATEGIC HAND-OFF Before leaving, find one trusted friend and say, “Tell everyone I said goodbye.” This is the lazy man’s Irish goodbye— but highly effective. You get the credit for being polite without actually having to endure 17 individual goodbyes, three hugs, and the inevitable, “Wait, before you go…” The key to a successful Irish goodbye is confidence. Never look back. Never wave. And, most importantly, never announce that you’re leaving. Because the moment you say, “Well, I guess I should get going,” you’ve just committed yourself to another 45 minutes. So…can I get you another beer?!

Many of us can picture the end of the American Revolution: French Naval vessels o�f the coast, the white �lag waving over Yorktown, and the signatures of British representatives and new Americans on the Treaty of Paris. But could a con�lict so philosophical and essential to who we are—as people and as a nation—really end with the surrender of Cornwallis? The root causes of the war with Britain and the ideas that drove the Patriot cause remain with us still, even as we celebrate their 250th anniversary. This year’s Chautauqua Lecture Series will explore the continuing legacy of the Revolution through the eyes of experts in four di�ferent ﬁelds. Join the Coastal Georgia Historical Society for in-depth explorations of the Revolution’s lasting power and its ideas’ ongoing role in civics education, world history, women’s rights, and the study of the war itself. Programs will take place each Thursday in September at 6 p.m. at St. Simons Presbyterian Church. Series tickets are $50 for members and $95 for non-members. Wilmot Greene felt St. Simons needed a place to get a nice cocktail and some dessert — or nibbles — and listen to samba or bossa nova, Costello or Krall. A dark place with a low-key vibe, think Newport mixed with Bahamas. A hole in the wall, where locals, or those lucky folks who just happen to walk by an island bar, could wander in, sit down, order a memorable pour with a name like Sazerac, served in a Nick and Nora. Meet East Beach Yacht Club, or EBYC for those who vibe on initials. EBYC doesn’t offer a proper dinner. Instead, settle into charcuterie plates, fancy hot dogs, desserts, and the old-school cocktail party circuit staple, Ritz crackers. “I tell people jokingly, if you want to have a big dinner and two drinks, you should go somewhere else. If you want to have three drinks and a bit of food, you should come here,” shares Greene.

remember evenings that began promptly at 5:00 and lasted longer than sundown. Greene, a musician, turned businessman, turned sailor, likens East Beach Yacht Club to a Caribbean “chill spot,” a laid-back waterfront bar. The kind of place he and his wife Tori wandered into during their two-year sailing journey on their sailboat Felina. The couple sailed “the Thorny Path” — a journey down the East Coast to Grenada or Trinidad, where they spent hurricane season before returning. “I’ve been to all these islands, and I’ve been to the chill spot,” he shares. “They don’t call them bars further down in the Caribbean. So, I’ve been to hundreds of chill spots and people take it seriously.” He adds, “At the end of the day, everybody makes it to the chill spot, and you chill together. Hell yeah! That’s what we are trying to accomplish at the Yacht Club. If you want to watch the game and scream, you should go somewhere else. If you want to have a conversation and a cocktail, that’s what we are here for.”

The Southern Cocktail Party is a St. Simons and Sea Island legacy. Two Golden Isles tastemakers, Jennifer Daniel and Emily Been, are bringing back the art of gathering with a totally fresh take. So, pull out yellow legal pads and jot down some notes. Mingling from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. has never gone out of style. Reach for silver trays, glassware, and linen cocktail napkins. September’s soirée season has begun. But first, a quick look back to The Island Cocktail Party Circuit when flair was welcome, boredom unwelcome, and attire de rigueur.

A LOOK BACK: The Island Cocktail Party Circuit Drinks, bites, laughter, and light conversation had a playbook back in the day, and planning was part of the pleasure. A hostess, or group of hostesses, settled on a date, guestlist, and menu. Formal invitations were postmarked, RSVPs requested, and legal notepads filled with to-dos, weeks in advance.

Who, What Wear Dresses, heels, and a clutch for her. Blazers, loafers, no socks, and perhaps a bowtie, for him. And by all means, book the babysitter! Favorite valets, bartenders, and babysitters were booked. Linen cocktail napkins, tablecloths, silver trays, and ice buckets appeared on dining room tables, along with rows of votives and cherished cut crystal vases for fresh flowers.

On more than one occasion— and it wasn’t considered a bad thing—certain in-demand guests received multiple invitations for the same night. This involved

an evening of “island hopping” and some fancy footwork. Not attending both was a nonoption. The big question: which one first?

The Guest List The guest list, considered the most important element of a good party, included a mix of island characters…architects, artists, lawyers, doctors, dentists, tennis players, golfers from the Mid-West, seasonal transplants, business types, trust funders from the Northeast, florists, decorators, Island Players, and anyone who could share a good tale with a rocks glass in hand. Kids watched parents head out the door promptly at 5:55 p.m. on a Thursday, Friday, or Saturday evening in fancy wear. As cars pulled away, like a welltimed symphony, young babysitters on both islands would pop TV dinners in the oven, and everyone would have a swell time.

Jennifer begins with the number: how many people to invite and which silver trays to pull out, and Emily dives headfirst into the menu. Both hearken back to family as inspiration, while preparing.

Grandmother’s Silver Trays and Glassware Deserve Another Round Jennifer uses some of her grandmother’s cherished silver trays and a mix and match of serving pieces. Impromptu Drop-By Tips Sometimes spur of the moment parties are the best kind. A quick call to friends to “drop by” after work or to kick off the weekend turns into The Night to Remember. Here are some tips for the dew-drop ins: • Always have meat, cheese, crackers and nuts on hand—sparkling water is a must and wine, both red and white. • Snippers come in handy: clip a few flowers or greenery from the garden and place in any container within reach. • Nothing sets a festive mood like a bit of flicker. Dim the overheads and place candles around the space. Watch end-of-week stress melt away.

“For the centerpiece, which is a little more formal, I use the same principle. Collect five to eight different types of leaves but look for a little something extra. Berries— green or even dead—add a bit of texture. Wrap the stems in saran wrap, which works as an anchor, then plop them in the water. Create a triangle for the base of green then add in the flowers. Now comes the star of the evening: your silver tray. Polish it just enough to let it shine — don’t worry over every tiny imperfection. (My preferred silver polish: Hagerty’s.) Fill it with beautiful glasses, cloth cocktail napkins, or a selection of bite-sized appetizers, and suddenly an ordinary evening feels elevated. Guests notice these thoughtful details because they communicate something simple: I prepared this with you in mind. When planning the menu, choose foods that can mostly be made ahead of time. Cheese boards, marinated olives, shrimp cocktail, stuffed mushrooms, deviled eggs, cheese straws, mixed nuts, and butter mints (Who doesn’t miss those?) are timeless choices that never go out of style. The hostess should spend the evening enjoying her guests, not standing over the stove. Keep it simple.

Perhaps the greatest gift a host can give is helping friendships flourish through conversation. Introduce guests who may not know one another by sharing something they have in common. Ask open-ended questions that invite stories instead of oneword answers. Keep the focus on making everyone feel included.

A few thoughtful hosting habits that make every gathering memorable: • Light a favorite candle before guests arrive. • Use real glassware whenever possible. • Always have fresh flowers or simple greenery. • Bring out your grandmother’s silver, crystal, or china instead of saving it “for someday.” • Offer a signature drink and a beautiful alcoholfree option.

• Keep appetizers easy to eat while standing. • Introduce guests with thoughtful details that spark conversation. • Play music that complements the room rather than dominates it. • Put your phone away and encourage guests to do the same. Hospitality has never been about impressing people. It’s about making them feel seen, welcomed, and valued.

St. Simons Island Real Estate Market Update S EP TEMB ER 2 02 6 St. Simons Island's residential market continued to normalize rather than decline through the first seven-plus months of 2026, according to closed-sale data from the Golden Isles MLS covering January 1–August 10, 2026, compared with the same window in 2025. As has been the case throughout the year, the headline price figures tell only part of the story — the more instructive read comes from looking underneath the median. Single family homes led the resilience. Closings rose 6% year over year, from 237 to 252, even as the median sold price slipped 8% to $899,000 from $980,000. The more telling number sits just below that headline: median price per square foot actually rose 3%, to $381 from $369. That divergence remains the signature story of this market — more transactions are clearing in the sub-$1 million range this year, pulling the median price down through mix-shift rather than any broad erosion in per-square-foot value. In other words, comparable homes are still commanding comparable dollars per foot; the market is simply seeing a higher share of moderately priced sales than it did a year ago. Homes are taking modestly longer to sell, 78 median days versus 69 a year ago, and sellers are still netting 97% of list price on average — a healthy, not distressed, ratio. The condo/townhome segment carried more of the market's visible softness. Units sold fell 9%, from 139 to 127, and the median sold price dropped 14% to $433,750 from $506,000 — the sharpest decline of any metric tracked this year. Yet even here, median price per square foot climbed nearly 4%, to $344 from $331, confirming that per-unit value is holding even as the mix tilts toward smaller and lower-priced properties. Days on market crept up slightly, 85 versus 80, while the sale-to-list ratio held close to last year's pace at 97.3%. The condo/townhome pullback in volume is worth watching, but it is not showing up as a value problem once price per square foot is isolated from the mix. Taken together, the data continues to support a normalizing market rather than a declining one. Single family homes remain the steadier half of the market, with volume actually accelerating even as prices settle into a more moderate range. The condo/townhome segment is absorbing most of the blended softness seen across St. Simons Island this year, but rising per-square-foot values in both segments point to a market recalibrating its composition — not losing value. Their colors are fresh, cheerful, and tempting— especially after a long, hot summer. But while the calendar may be moving toward fall, the weather often has not caught up yet. In coastal Georgia and much of the Southeast, late summer heat can linger well into September and even October. That creates a challenge for cool-season annuals, which thrive in milder temperatures rather than intense heat, warm soil, and high humidity.

The Nursery Season Dilemma Nurseries begin receiving fall color early because seasonal planting is planned weeks in advance. Growers and retailers are preparing for the fall rush, and many customers are eager to refresh containers, entrances, and landscape beds as soon as the first fall flowers appear. INVISIBLE OPPONENTS ADDRESSING OFTEN-OVERLOOKED FACTORS AFFECTING HIGH SCHOOL ATHLETES’ MENTAL HEALTH As youth sports become increasingly competitive, particularly at the high school level, greater attention is being given to the mental health of young athletes. While sports provide physical, emotional and social benefits, the pressure to perform, balance busy schedules and meet high expectations can sometimes take a toll on a student’s well-being. Recognizing the signs of stress and supporting young athletes both on and off the field are important to helping them stay healthy and succeed. “Competitive sports can offer athletes such a great opportunity to compete with each other, grow an appreciation for skill development, navigate performance anxiety, and build camaraderie, along with the chance to develop healthy physical training habits for a Chad E. “Student athletes have young developing minds. Many may have insight into a deeper understanding of these life and sportspecific stressors, but the athlete may have not fully developed an effective psychological framework that allows them to handle these aspects of their life,” Ward says. “It is important that the student athlete develop skills that help them deal with the stresses of their sport, but also of life.”

PERSPECTIVE Spot the Signals Mental health concerns can look different from one student athlete to another, but coaches, parents and teammates should watch for common warning signs, including: • Being irritable, short or aggressive with others • A lack of patience • Difficulty sleeping • Inability to focus on conversations or tasks • Unhealthy behaviors like severe diet alterations or restrictions • Being withdrawn or not showing up to practice • A decrease in baseline motivation or enthusiasm

“All of this can vary, and any symptoms should be assessed and weighed,” Ward notes.

“Families and athletes should be encouraged to consider seeking out professional help from a psychologist if there are signs of depression or anxiety, along with talking to their primary care provider about these symptoms.” The Support Playbook In addition to seeking medical help, when necessary, there

are a few measures that can be taken to support high school athletes if they find themselves in a precarious emotional state. “Start with a timeout. Creating a pause in the ongoing competitive momentum can allow an athlete to focus on their well-being. A timeout can vary from minutes to months or longer depending on what is needed,” Ward says. “During this time, the athlete should work on introspection and understand how they are feeling about what they are going through. It can allow the athlete to identify triggers of their stress and provide time to work on ways to communicate the emotions they are experiencing. For example, one target may

be that the athlete works better to understand what aspects of their performance and the competition that they have control over versus what they do not have control over.” Parents and coaches should check in with student athletes throughout the season and afterward to discuss concerns. During the offseason, encourage athletes to spend time outdoors, try other sports, attend camps and participate in school clubs to build friendships and interests beyond their primary sport. At home, maintaining responsibilities and monitoring social media use can also support mental well-being.

My husband recently pointed to an old black speaker in our Brunswick property and told me it was valuable. I looked at its scratched cabinet and faded white cone. It did not look expensive or particularly impressive. But he explained that it was a Yamaha NS-10M Studio monitor, the kind of speaker that once appeared in recording studios around the world. Yamaha says it eventually became a global studio standard and received recognition through a Technical Grammy. One of the engineers most closely connected to the speaker was Bob Clearmountain. He helped popularize the NS-10 after bringing a pair into New York’s famed Power Station studio. He even placed tissue over the tweeters because he found them too bright. Other engineers followed his lead, and the unassuming speaker became a fixture in professional studios. Clearmountain later mixed Bruce Springsteen’s landmark

album Born in the U.S.A. The album’s powerful combination of drums, guitars, keyboards and Springsteen’s unmistakable voice helped make it one of the defining rock records of the 1980s. That connection brought the lesson home for me. The NS-10 was not responsible for Springsteen’s talent or the E Street Band’s performance. Its role was different. It helped an experienced engineer hear whether all those individual parts worked together and whether the finished music could hold up beyond the controlled environment of the studio.

Whether you spend a little or a lot, the wine in your glass reflects decisions made long before it reaches the shelf. Wine pricing can sit comfortably in the single digit range or climb into the multi-digit bracket. While you can find beautifully made wines at any budget, you may also stumble into lackluster bottles regardless of what you spend. Cost alone never guarantees pleasure or disappointment. What shapes the experience and price includes farming choices, cellar decisions, and land management. To see how quality diverges, imagine two producers working with the same fictional grape, Sauvignon Plonk. One aims for affordability while the other aims for excellence. Take a grower of Sauvignon Plonk used for a widely available budget brand. Vines are pushed to maximize yields, which dilutes flavor. Machine harvesters can scoop up everything desirable and undesirable including ripe berries, underripe berries, leaves, and other vineyard debris. The fruit arrives at the winery in massive loads where it is destined

for quick, efficient processing as precision slows things down. Fermentation happens in enormous tanks designed for consistency rather than character. The wine is bottled as soon as possible, without nuance, and without the kind of attention that elevates raw fruit into something memorable. It may be quaffable, but all the efforts are deterred into an often dull and soulless result. The higher quality Sauvignon Plonk begins with restraint. Vines are pruned, often by hand, to produce fewer grapes, concentrating flavor and structure. Vineyard workers handpick only the best clusters, sometimes making multiple passes through the vineyard to catch fruit at perfect ripeness. Farming itself costs more because the goal is not speed; it is care and attention to detail. In the cellar, the winemaker treats each vineyard plot as its own story, fermenting separately, tasting constantly, and making assessments that favor quality over efficiency. Aging might involve expensive barrels,

extended durations of time, and meticulous monitoring. Every decision adds cost, but every choice also adds complexity and intrigue. Then there is the matter of place. Distinctive wines speak of their landscape. Ordinary wines could be from any patch of earth. Vineyards in soughtafter regions cost more to farm. Their fruit carries the subtle traits that make wine feel layered rather than flat. Skilled labor, sustainable practices, and a better crop all require an expert’s touch. When a winery hand crafts a wine, intention shows up in every sip, from the texture to the way the flavors unfold.

The simple truth is that most inexpensive wine is engineered to be acceptable. Quality wine is carefully made to be exceptional. One bottle offers a straightforward sip and the other offers texture, depth, and the kind of detail that makes you pause. Both have their place, but only one is built to linger in your memory long after the glass is empty. OFF ISLAND North America’s largest “blackwater” wetland, one of the “Seven Wonders of Georgia,” joins a list of fewer than 1,250 places on Earth recognized for “outstanding universal value.” In July, Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge was inscribed as the 27th World Heritage Site in the U.S. and the first site in the state of Georgia. First designated as a National Wildlife Refuge in 1937 and a National Wilderness Area in 1974, it now joins the ranks of the Grand Canyon, Yosemite, Yellowstone, the Galapagos Islands, Australia’s Great Barrier Reef, England’s Stonehenge, and India’s Taj Mahal as iconic natural and cultural landmarks.

Comprised of 438,000 acres of upland forests, wet and dry prairies, and wetlands in southeast Georgia and northeast Florida, the Okefenokee is the first ever refuge managed entirely by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to receive this designation. It represents the largest predominantly rainwaterfed lowland peatland in the subtropical zone worldwide and is one of the largest and most intact remaining ecosystems within the North American Coastal Plain Biodiversity Hotspot. As the headwaters of the St. Marys and Suwannee Rivers, it creates a continuous wildlife corridor from the Atlantic Ocean to the Gulf, providing habitat and breeding grounds for hundreds of species, including many that are endangered or threatened. The primary gateways to the refuge in Georgia are Okefenokee Swamp Park in Waycross and Okefenokee Adventures in Folkston, along with Stephen Foster State Park in Fargo. Since 2021, Okefenokee Swamp Park, Inc. has served as the nonprofit partner supporting the World Heritage nomination, including the final phase that led to the UNESCO approval. There’s a local twist to the World Heritage Site designation as well: Golden Isles photographers and storytellers Benjamin Galland and Jess Swan of Volo Project shot photos and footage that were submitted in support of the UNESCO bid. Known for gorgeous imagery, Galland and Swan were the creatives behind the St. Simons Land Trust’s 25th Anniversary “Seeding for the Future” short film. The images seen here are some of what they captured in their trek though the swamp. They couldn’t be more excited about the recent inscription.

YESTERYEAR SOUTH TO FLORIDA With revolutionary activity on the rise in Georgia, where was an embattled Loyalist to go? For many, the answer— by choice or by force—soon became the British colony of East Florida. From 1763 to 1783, this colony was nearly the size of modern-day Florida. Another colony, West Florida, was separated from its neighbor by the Apalachicola River west of Tallahassee. While conflict increased along the coast, East Florida remained loyal to the crown, attracting Loyalists driven from other British North American colonies. Families fled entirely, bringing their children, their businesses, and those they enslaved. As the population grew, Black East Floridians came to outnumber whites two to one. Not all Black Floridians arrived by force, though. Between the early days of the Revolution and the first Seminole War, which began in 1817, hundreds or even thousands of enslaved freedom seekers from Georgia made their way into Florida or into the continent’s interior. According to historian Dr. Paul Pressly, Director Emeritus of the Ossabaw Island Foundation, these freedom seekers were aided by local Seminole and

Creek people, who, like many Indigenous groups, often sided with the British to protect their rights to their land.

Our slice of Coastal Georgia was, in many ways, a bastion of Loyalism. Even today, place names here bear the mark of British influence.

On St. Simons Island, Demere Road takes its name from two brothers, Paul and Raymond Demeré, who served under Oglethorpe. Jekyll Island’s Captain Wylly Road also takes its name from a Loyalist family who resided there.

fifteen families from St. Simons relocated to St. Augustine during the Revolution. Some, like the Wyllys and the Demerés, eventually returned. By 1807, both had regained much of their former property in Coastal Georgia. Twenty years after the Revolution, many of the same families occupied this land, now part of the new United States.

Some Loyalists were banished by order of the Assembly of the State of Georgia, which also seized their property by an “Act of Attainder, Banishments and Confiscation” in August 1783. Two Wyllys, William and Campbell, were on the list, as was James Spalding, who owned a prominent cotton plantation on St. Simons. In all,
