PEOPLE “We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defence, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America.” Today, those words are among the most recognized in American history. But if I were living in the Colony of Georgia in July 1776, I would have had no idea those words would someday be written, or that a nation called the United States of America would even exist. In fact, if someone had asked me whether declaring independence from Great Britain was a good idea, I probably would have answered, “Absolutely not.” From where I stood in Georgia, the British Empire seemed unstoppable. The King’s navy controlled the oceans. British soldiers were among the best-trained troops in the world. Their government had money, power, and resources that stretched across the globe. We colonists had none of those advantages. Georgia was the youngest and smallest of the thirteen colonies. Living on the frontier, we faced threats from the wilderness, uncertain relations with Native tribes, and the possibility of attack by the Spanish in Florida. We depended on British trade and their protection. Breaking away from Britain felt less like a bold step toward freedom and more like stepping off a cliff. Even among neighbors, there was no agreement about independence. Some supported it, while others remained loyal to the Crown. Many simply wanted peace and hoped the disputes with Parliament could somehow be resolved without war.

The military situation offered little encouragement. General George Washington’s Continental Army was short of supplies, ammunition, and experienced soldiers. British forces were preparing major campaigns, and many believed the rebellion would soon be crushed. If I were a betting man in 1776, I would have put my money on the redcoats. Yet that is what makes the American story so remarkable. Against overwhelming odds, the colonies persisted. Washington kept the army together through defeat and hardship. Patriots continued fighting when victory seemed impossible. France eventually joined the cause, providing crucial support that helped turn the tide of the war. What appeared to be a reckless gamble in July 1776 became one of the greatest underdog victories in world history. The colonies won their independence, created a Constitution, and established a republic unlike any the world had seen. Happy 250th Birthday America!

Calling all

Artists Glynn Visual Arts invites artists to add their creative voices to a patchwork installation that will be exhibited at the College of Coastal Georgia later this year. Their canvases will be displayed as the local element of an exciting project in conjunction with Voices and Votes: Democracy in America, part of Museum on Main Street, a collaboration between the Smithsonian Institution and State Humanities Councils nationwide. It is based on an exhibition by the National Museum of American History. Support for Museum on Main Street has been provided by the United States Congress. When American revolutionaries waged a war for independence, they took a leap of faith that sent ripple effects across generations. They embraced a radical idea of establishing a government that entrusted the power of the nation not in a monarchy, but in its citizens. That great leap sparked questions that continue to impact Americans: who has

the right to vote, what are the freedoms and responsibilities of citizens, and whose voices will be heard? This exhibition is a springboard for discussions about those very questions and how they are reflected in local stories. GVA is seeking submissions representing your artistic vision of the role an active, informed citizen plays in our democracy and the importance of voting and freedom of speech in America. The exhibition is open to artists in Southeast Georgia and will be juried by a selection of judges. You do not need to be a GVA member to submit. Accepted artworks will be incorporated into a patchwork unit and displayed at the College of Coastal Georgia alongside the Smithsonian’s exhibition from November 1 – December 13, 2026. Artists names will be listed along with the installation. Open Call Application closes August 15, 2026. Information about submissions is available at glynnvisualarts.org/expressing-democracy.

where Benjamin was believed to be buried after his death. In 1929, three of Nancy’s greatgreat-granddaughters traveled from Kentucky to Brunswick to see where she had lived and where Benjamin was thought to rest.

It was the 1790s, and Brunswick was still shaking off The Revolution. The town had been laid out in 1771 with royal names, tidy streets, and green squares that looked more British than American. Then the war came. Many of Brunswick’s early Tory lot holders fled, leaving their lands to be confiscated and regranted after independence. By 1789, the young United States had named Brunswick an official port of entry, and by 1797 it would become the seat of Glynn County. The quiet peninsula where Benjamin Hart and his wife Nancy Morgan Hart arrived was not yet the grand port city of later years. It was raw, unsettled, and still being remade. This probably suited Nancy just fine.

Before Brunswick, the Harts lived in Georgia’s Broad River country, where the Revolutionary War was less a distant political struggle than a brutal neighborhood

conflict between Patriots and Loyalists. Nancy’s name would become one of the fiercest to emerge from that backcountry world. Modern historians warn that her most famous exploits belong more to legend than documented fact, but what a legend it is. As the story goes, a band of Loyalists once arrived at Nancy’s cabin, demanding food and forcing her to cook her last turkey. While the men drank, Nancy quietly sent her daughter to summon help, then began slipping their muskets through

a gap in the cabin wall. When the men caught on, she grabbed one of the guns herself and held them off. Because Nancy was said to be cross-eyed, each man supposedly believed she had the barrel trained directly on him. In the bloodier 1848 version of the tale, two were shot and the rest were later hanged. By the time Nancy reached Brunswick, that fiery frontier chapter was behind her, but the Hart family left real traces here. Tax records place Benjamin Hart in Glynn County by 1794, owning fifty acres and fifteen enslaved people. Local tradition and marker accounts place the Hart property near present-day Wright Square,

It’s a little amazing, but also fitting for modern quirky Brunswick that before Nancy Hart hardened into folklore, and before Georgia turned her into a Revolutionary heroine, she passed through Old Town. For one quiet season of her life, one of the state’s fiercest patriot legends belonged to us.

Inspired by a touch of romance, Captain Matt Sligh purchased String of Pearls in 2019. The 71-foot yacht, originally named Pearl Necklace, was a birthday gift from a WWII PT boat captain to his wife, who had requested a simple necklace as a gift. Designed by Geerd Hendel and crafted in 1957 by legendary Maine boat builder Malcolm Brewer, the yacht was constructed from mahogany over cedar with teak decks and accents with four powerful engines to speed her through the water. She eventually outraced sportfishing boat Marlin owned by a dashing Cape Codder—Jack Kennedy—and established a reputation as the fastest boat in New England. In that very decade, another love story was blossoming down South off the Georgia coast. Sligh’s parents took an

outing in the 1950s on The Pine Knot, a wooden boat on St. Simons Island, where they met and fell in love. Before making her way to the Golden Isles, String of Pearls was sold by the original owner, underwent restoration in Newport, Rhode Island, and chartered in the waters of the Classic Coast. Heartthrob celebrities from Brad Pitt to Pierce Brosnan to Harrison Ford, along with Bruce Springsteen and a few royals, have been on board and felt her magnetic draw. The same draw that was felt by Captain Sligh.

“Falling in love with String of Pearls was instantaneous. It wasn’t just about her elegant lines; it was the rare, undeniable feeling that you are stepping aboard a living piece of history.”

When String of Pearls came up for sale, following its use as an exclusive charter by a coastal Georgia five-star resort, Sligh figured the stars aligned for a new passion project for him and his family. The captain jumped on board to purchase, preserve, and operate the legacy yacht. His intent was to share it with the public through charters along the Golden Isles’ breathtaking coastal waterways. “We didn’t restore this vessel just to preserve wood and brass,” shares Captain Sligh. “We did it to build a sanctuary on the water. My greatest joy is watching the boat work its

magic—slowing down time, so people can capture memories they’ll carry with them forever.” Captain Sligh and String of Pearls are fully engaged in the community, supporting charities and non-profits such as Safe Harbor, CASA Glynn, and Hospice of the Golden Isles. A Revolutionary Moment on St. Simons Island By Kathi Williams

While the remains of Fort Frederica and historical markers for Fort St. Simons and the Bloody Marsh battle site clearly indicate that soldiers and military presence played a big role in St. Simons Island history, those days were mostly before and after the Revolutionary War. In fact, the most significant military confrontation between British and American troops in Georgia was the Siege of Savannah in 1779.

However, each year, on the Saturday closest to April 19th, members of the Sons of the American Revolution, Daughters of the American Revolution, other civic organizations and local residents—many wearing colonial attire and the uniforms of soldiers from days long past—gather in The Village on St. Simons Island to mark “Georgia Patriot’s Day.”

On July 4, 1776, mere months after that fateful day at Lexington and Concord, representatives of the Thirteen Colonies met as members of the Second Continental Congress at the Pennsylvania State House (now known as Independence Hall) in Philadelphia to formally approve the Declaration of Independence. There to represent Georgia were Button Gwinnett, Lyman Hall, and George Walton. While debate has ensued about who was present at the gathering and whether August 2 was the actual date of the signing, it is clear that the July meeting and this

historical declaration marked the birth of our nation. Georgia was the youngest of the Thirteen Colonies, with only 43 years having passed since being founded by General James Oglethorpe in 1733. The final colony established by Britain in North America, Georgia was intended mostly to be a buffer

zone to protect the southern colonies from Spanish invasions out of Florida. The young colony was initially founded and ruled by a Board of Trustees based in London, England, and had no governor or governing body within the colony until 1752. At the time of the outbreak of the Revolutionary War in 1775, threats of Spanish incursion had ended and the forts along the coast had mostly been abandoned. Georgia was scarcely populated and steadily establishing a coastal plantation economy based on exports of rice and Sea Island cotton. Sir James Wright was serving as the royally appointed governor in 1776 when the Revolutionary movement spurred by the 1765 Stamp Act escalated into armed conflict. As a newer colony Georgia had been mostly on

the outskirts of Revolutionary War politics and wartime action due to its small population and minimal development. Though Georgians resisted British trade regulation, there were many who sympathized with British interests because royal rule had brought them prosperity and the presence of British troops protected them from Indian attacks. Despite existing Loyalist tendencies, Georgia rebels arrested Wright in January 1776, but he managed to flee to London on a British warship. He then lobbied heavily for a full-scale British invasion of Georgia, which eventually happened in late 1778. In the meantime, Glynn County was established in February of 1777, and was named in honor of John Glynn, a British Parliamentarian who staunchly supported the American colonies.

It was on April 19 of 1778 that St. Simons Island had its shining Revolutionary moment. Three years to the day after British soldiers fired on American patriots at Lexington and Concord to begin the Revolutionary War, the Georgia Continental Navy captured three British ships in the Frederica River near St. Simons Island. The British navy had positioned three warships, Hichinbrooke, Hatter, and Rebecca in the Frederica River with the intent of interrupting trade by capturing American merchant vessels off the coast of South Carolina and Georgia. In response, commander of the Georgia militia, Colonel Samuel Elbert, ordered American galleys Washington, Lee, and Bulloch to engage and capture the British ships. During the April 19 morning attack, the smaller, better

Not only did the victory put out of commission the two large British ships that had “spread terror” on the coast, but it also delayed for more than eight months a major movement by the British to capture Fort Morris and Sunbury and additional naval attacks. The Frederica Naval Action further boosted confidence in the strength of America’s defense by effectively demonstrating the ability of the smaller, heavily armed galleys to succeed in battle against the larger, but considerably less maneuverable British ships in the confined waters of inland naval battles. This charming city at the mouth of the Savannah River is filled with life, culture, and activities to warrant more than just one visit, but here are some of our must-stays, eats, and explores.

Getting There From the Savannah/Hilton Head Airport: Many of us fly into the Savannah airport and hightail it down to SSI on I-95, braving16-wheelers and Florida-bound speeders—the I didn’t know Georgia had a coast—crowd. Let them fly by. From the Savannah/Hilton Head Airport, take a hard left on I-16 towards the coast and arrive in an elegant city, filled with squares in perfect proportion, historic brownstones, and stately residences as lovely as those of her sister-city to the north, Charleston, South Carolina. From St. Simons Island: Take the scenic route North on U.S. 17 from Brunswick. Cross the Darien River, admire shrimp boats, and feel stress melt away in the hot South Georgia sunshine. Just outside of charming Darien, pass by small McIntosh County communities such as Townsend

and Eulonia, famous for their deep Gullah-Geechee roots. This stretch, known as the Coastal Highway, is worth discovery and exploration.

Stay Hotel Bardo: In the Victorian District off Forsyth Park, high design meets mid-century modern. Throw in quirky elements, rich textures, alluring tones, and unexpected color palettes, all wrapped up in luxury, including Frette slippers and linens in-room. PERSPECTIVE A BREAKTHROUGH IN OSTEOARTHRITIS TREATMENT If everyday movements like climbing stairs, opening a jar, or getting out of bed have become stiff or painful, you may be feeling the effects of osteoarthritis (OA). You’re not alone. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), more than 32 million Americans live with this progressive joint condition. OA can impact joints in both the upper and lower body, as well as the spine, limiting mobility and affecting quality of life. St. Simons Island resident Elizabeth Davison, 80, knows how debilitating OA can be. An automobile crash in 2020 severely injured both of her

ankles. Several surgeries and a bone infection later, she developed OA, a limited range of motion, and a significant limp. Conservative treatments did not relieve her pain. As if that weren’t enough, Ms. Davison also had lung cancer. While meeting with her radiation oncologist, Timothy A. Jamieson, MD, Ph.D., he asked about the pain in her ankles. “What followed afterward was life-changing, beginning with Dr. Jamieson’s mapping of my treatment plan for OA,” Ms. Davison says. Dr. Jamieson is the medical director of the Southeast Georgia Health System Cancer Care Centers and CyberKnife program. Working with radiation therapists, primary care physicians, rheumatologists, and orthopaedists, he oversees Varian TrueBeam low-dose radiation therapy (LDRT) treatments for OA patients. He recommended a noninvasive, nonsurgical treatment to alleviate Ms. Davison’s chronic OA pain. “The TrueBeam OA protocol uses extremely low doses of radiation—less than 5% of what is used in cancer treatments,” he explains. “There’s no recorded case of cancer developing in a patient who received LDRT for osteoarthritis.”

For Ms. Davison, TrueBeam was a godsend. “I have no more discomfort, a pretty good range of motion, and a normal stride,” she says. Some patients can reduce or eliminate their medication after treatment; others choose TrueBeam LDRT as an alternative to surgery. Lowdose radiation treatment, Dr. Jamieson explains, “is also used to treat plantar fasciitis, bursitis and tendonitis—basically, any benign inflammatory disease, in addition to cancer.” How Does LDRT Work? As cartilage wears down and the joints approach the boneon-bone stage, inflammation and pain occur. Inflammation is also triggered when the white blood cells secrete certain chemicals. Low-dose radiation calms that process by altering the inflammatory chemicals. By calming inflammation, TrueBeam LDRT reduces pain and slows the progression of OA. Six treatments delivered over two weeks can provide pain relief that lasts up to two years. Each outpatient session takes less than 15 minutes, requires no anesthesia, and causes no discomfort, making it a convenient option for most people. “Patients can drive home afterward,” says Dr. Jamieson.

A Proven Track Record LDRT does not harm healthy joints. Side effects are uncommon and typically mild, such as a skin rash or fatigue. Dr. Jamieson says the benefits of TrueBeam treatment outweigh these small risks. He recommends trying conservative treatments first, though some patients choose to continue physical therapy and steroid injections while receiving LDRT. Elizabeth Davison is grateful that the Health System is on the forefront of LDRT’s growing popularity in the United States. It restored her ability to enjoy an all-American pastime. “I’m a big baseball fan,” she says. “I go to 10 or so Atlanta Braves games a year and had to pull myself up the railing as I took steps one-footed. I cannot wait to go back this year. I feel like a new woman!” Are You a Candidate? To qualify for TrueBeam lowdose radiation treatment, you should be at least 35 years old, with mild to moderate osteoarthritis. Pregnant women cannot receive LDRT. A radiation oncologist, along with your primary care provider or orthopaedist will review your medical history before approving treatment. Referrals are required. In conversations about wine, tannins tend to command attention, oak is admired for its glossy sheen, and alcohol is praised for its warmth. But acidity?

Acidity is the quiet force that decides whether wine feels vivid or dull, alive or inert. It’s the hidden frame beneath the world’s greatest bottles, the structural beam that holds everything upright while the flashier elements get all the attention. Acidity is, unquestionably, the architecture of wine. In cooler regions such as Germany’s Mosel Valley, France’s Loire Valley, and Italy’s Alto Adige, grapes ripen slowly, preserving their natural malic and tartaric acids. This extended hang time is what gives these wines their electric snap. A Mosel Riesling’s tension, a Sancerre’s laser cut precision, or a Südtirol Pinot Bianco’s crystalline clarity all

The St. Simons Island real estate market has entered a meaningful recalibration in 2026. With 246 closed residential sales through June 6 — compared to 265 over the same period in 2025 — transaction volume has pulled back modestly, while the underlying data tells a more nuanced story that serious buyers and sellers need to understand. Single family homes are holding their value better than the headline numbers suggest. The median close price of $912,500 is 8.8% below the same period last year — but that figure is heavily influenced by a shift in the mix of what's selling. When you look at price per square foot, the story flips: median sold price per square foot rose 4.5%, from $368 to $385. Buyers are purchasing smaller homes on average, which pulls the median price down — but the underlying value of square footage on St. Simons Island has actually appreciated. For sellers, this means pricing per square foot is the right benchmark, not last year's sales price on a different-sized home. Single family sell-through remains efficient. The median SP/LP ratio of 96.7% actually improved slightly over 2025's 96.4%, confirming that correctly priced homes are still closing near ask. Days on market extended from 66 to 77 days — a healthy buffer for buyers to conduct due diligence, not a sign of distress. The condo and townhome segment is where the real softness lives. Unit sales dropped from 101 to 83 (−17.8%), and the median close price fell from $525,000 to $427,500 — a decline of 18.6%. This segment is experiencing genuine price discovery as inventory has grown and buyer demand has moderated. The silver lining: price per square foot is still up 2.3%, suggesting even here the land and location premium holds. YESTERYEAR THE STARS & STRIPES FOREVER This year marks 250 years since the signing of the Declaration of Independence—and 249 years since the Continental Congress’s Flag Resolution, adopted on June 14, 1777. In this resolution, Congressional representatives determined that the official flag of the United States would “be thirteen stripes, alternate red and white; ... [with a] union of thirteen stars, white in a blue field, representing a new constellation.” At first, that constellation may have been difficult to recognize. The Flag Resolution did not specify critical details, including the number of red versus white stripes, the star pattern, or even how many points the stars should have. One early version proudly displayed thirteen eight-pointed stars. When

Declaration of Independence signatory Francis Hopkinson, of New Jersey, designed a standardized version of the flag with seven red stripes, six white, and thirteen stars arranged in five neat rows, all seemed so settled that he asked to be paid: first in a “Quarter Cask of the Public Wine,” and then in cash. But the flag’s design was not quite as permanent as it seemed. At first, Congress wanted to add a star and a stripe for each new state. The Star-Spangled Banner, the Fort McHenry flag that inspired our national anthem, fell under this rule and thus bears fifteen stars and fifteen matching stripes. In 1818, Congress decided to keep the stripes to thirteen, but continue adding stars. Since 1777, the flag’s design has been officially modified 27 times, with our current design being the longest lasting: the fifty-star version has been flying since 1959.

The American flag is our most familiar national symbol—of patriotism, mourning, celebration, and many points in between.

Images of the flag abound in the Coastal Georgia Historical Society’s collection. It flies steadfast in the background of postcards and on hand fans given away at the opening of Brunswick’s Ships for Victory Memorial. It was saluted by troops at Naval Air Station St. Simons during World War II, and it flew as our last Lighthouse keeper, David O’Hagan, attended the ceremony that opened the Lighthouse to the public in 1984. Perhaps most

recognizably, the American flag appeared at every Liberty ship launching at Brunswick’s J.A. Jones Shipyard: day or night, rain or shine. The Coastal Georgia Historical Society is honored to join organizations across the country and you, our neighbors, in celebrating and commemorating the 250th anniversary of the founding of the United States of America.
