Look for these signs around campus:

March 2009

By Jerilyn Roberts Campus Environmental Health and Safety Manager RecycleMania is an opportunity for SDSM&T to promote recycling on campus while having fun competing with other colleges and universities around the United States. We are participating in the competition division of the contest within the following categories: Per Capita Classic, Bottles and Cans, Paper, Cardboard, and Food Service Organics. SDSM&T has been entering weekly data into the RecycleMania website. The competition lasts from January 18th – March 28th. The first two weeks of the competition were a trial period for the schools to be able to organize their data collection efforts. Data is being collected from several areas of campus by various sources. The Rapid City Material Recovery Facility (RCMRF) is providing weight data for the plastics, steel cans, aluminum, and glass gathered in the City’s recycling trailer located on the west side of Surbeck Center. The volumes of the paper and cardboard dumpsters are being monitored and recorded by the Aramark night custodial crew. A conversion factor provided by RecycleMania is then used to report pounds of recycled paper and cardboard. The food service organics has been a cooperative effort between Fish Garbage, RCMRF, and

student Jessica Chretien. The first order of business was to get the food service dumpster rerouted to go through the RCMRF, so the organic components could be composted. Waste from SDSM&T has not been on a collection route that would allow the waste to go through the RCMRF where the organic materials can be composted; instead it was going straight to the landfill. Long-term,SDSM&T would like to have all waste going through the RCMRF in order to reduce the amount of material making it to the landfill. Fish Garbage provided SDSM&T with several weights of the food service dumpster during the first few weeks of the competition to allow SDSM&T to determine a weight per cubic yard for the dumpster. The RCMRF sorted several of these loads of waste for SDSM&T to be able to determine percentages to count toward the competition. (Recyclables that are thrown in the trash will end up in the landfill.) Jessica Chretien has then been able to monitor the food service organics to allow SDSM&T to compete in this category. There are only 80 schools around the United States competing in the competition division for food service organics. What can you do? Get in the Game and Recycle! Those of you who are already recycling – continue the great work!

The 3 R’s: Put away those textbooks! The three R’s are not “‘reading, ‘riting and ‘rithetic” anymore! Now they stand for “Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle!”

There are marked bins in all buildings. Residence Halls can place items in the outside blue bins.

Save the humans! Recycling saves the planet, in turn saving humans. Sort out recycling and reduce your footprint.
