I grew up in Brazil and was involved in farming. I started to work as a hobby beekeeper when I was 17 years old and then studied farming systems (Animal Production/ Husbandry). Here in New Zealand I’ve been a commercial beekeeper for six years working on honey production and pollination and another three years for a commercial queen producer. I’ve always owned my own hives too. I’m passionate about biodynamic and organic agriculture. My aim is to inspire people to grow their own food and to be resourceful.

Demand for pollination services also continues to increase with NZ’s primary industry dependent on the healthy pollination of fruit and crops for its survival.

Jane Qin WINE SCIENCE LECTURER
How did you become a lecturer at EIT? I gained a master’s degree in viticulture and oenology from Lincoln University. I’ve been lecturing wine science and working as a lab technician and a cellar hand in the South Island before moving to Hawke’s Bay to teach at EIT. What can students learn from you? I have extensive practical experience in industry, particularly in wine quality control. ‘From theory to practice’ – I teach my students how they can put their theoretical knowledge into practice. You are also a researcher, what is your area of research? I’m collaborating with my colleagues Victor Ye and Ant McKenzie on chemical and sensorial profiling of Hawke’s Bay wines. We investigate how chemical compounds have an attribution on the flavour and mouthfeel of wines.
EIT has world-class facilities: a modern multi laboratory complex, including an instrument laboratory that houses advanced research analytical instruments, a teaching and research winery, sensory laboratory and vineyard. I have a fair amount of multidisciplinary work experience and a can-do attitude. Hopefully I can instill a love of all knowledge in my students and teach them the value of being “useful”.
What might someone be surprised to know about you? I’ve lived north of the arctic circle for a year, near the European Space Agency’s test range, as part of my masters studies. How is your course linked to the needs of industry? Knowledge of programming, combined with maths and statistics are essential in a wide variety of Hawke’s Bay industries such as logistics, agriculture, data science, automation and manufacturing. It’s very versatile.

Korey Field PATISSERIE TUTOR I have been cooking 25 years with the last 15 solely patisserie. I have worked in the world’s finest establishments and under many world-class chefs. I have cooked for the Queen of England and won numerous gold medals in a variety of cooking competitions. Before joining EIT I was overseeing the kitchen operations of Kauri Cliffs, Cape Kidnappers and Matakauri Lodges as Group Executive Chef. I teach my students how to make bread, pastry, doughs, pastries, cake decorations as well as chocolate and sugar artistry. Learners can branch off to so many different paths. Skilled Pastry Chefs are in high demand all over the world and NZ is no exception.

Scholars Training Restaurant and On The Terrace Café are integral parts of the Culinary Arts and Restaurant programmes at EIT. Korey Field PATISSERIE TUTOR I have been cooking 25 years with the last 15 solely patisserie. I have worked in the world’s finest establishments and under many world-class chefs. I have cooked for the Queen of England and won numerous gold medals in a variety of cooking competitions. Before joining EIT I was overseeing the kitchen operations of Kauri Cliffs, Cape Kidnappers and Matakauri Lodges as Group Executive Chef. I teach my students how to make bread, pastry, doughs, pastries, cake decorations as well as chocolate and sugar artistry. Learners can branch off to so many different paths. Skilled Pastry Chefs are in high demand all over the world and NZ is no exception.

I like to work in a relaxed environment and believe this is the best way to learn and get work done. That’s why I show my students that you can have a bit of a laugh and get your work done to a high standard at the same time. The current joinery industry is very busy. Local industry indicated that they were in need of workers. We aim to get our students into the work place two days a week. This enables a smooth transition from education to full-time work as they have had a taste of what it is like in the work place.

EIT has a fully equipped teaching animal care facility which allows students to enjoy a mix of classroom theory, animal handling and practical experience. It houses a varied selection of animals including rabbits, guinea pigs, chickens, turtles and birds. EIT also has a simulation veterinary clinic which has a clinical practical room, reception area and treatment room, all of which create the ideal environment for hands on training.
EIT laboratories are modern and purpose-built comprising both general and specialist laboratories. The general laboratories, which cater for up to 60 students at any one time, are fully equipped for all sciences. You could work with animals in a veterinary practice, animal facility, laboratory, animal hospital or wildlife park. You could also go on to earn a qualification in veterinary nursing, technology or science.

I had moved back to Hawke’s Bay after studying at Victoria University and travelling. What can students learn from you? I have performed extensively, penned and recorded two albums, and worked on sound art projects. I bring experiences from industry, passion and drive to the classroom. What is the best thing about working at EIT’s IDEAschool? I just love working here. I especially love seeing students unlock their creative voice and seeing their love for music grow. Before coming to EIT I was working at Massey University Veterinary Teaching Hospital for about four years as an anaesthetic technician and also for a short period in the emergency department as an ICU nurse. The most exciting thing about vet nursing is the fact that everyday is different. You get to care for animals when they need you the most and it is very rewarding. Job prospects for qualified vet nurses are very good as there is an increased demand for higher educated vet nurses. The profession is evolving in NZ with EIT now offering a Bachelor of Veterinary Nursing*.

EIT has a fully equipped teaching animal care facility which allows students to enjoy a mix of classroom theory, animal handling and practical experience. It houses a varied selection of animals including rabbits, guinea pigs, chickens, turtles and birds. EIT also has a simulation veterinary clinic which has a clinical practical room, reception area and treatment room, all of which create the ideal environment for hands on training.
EIT laboratories are modern and purpose-built comprising both general and specialist laboratories. The general laboratories, which cater for up to 60 students at any one time, are fully equipped for all sciences. You could work with animals in a veterinary practice, animal facility, laboratory, animal hospital or wildlife park. You could also go on to earn a qualification in veterinary nursing, technology or science.

MĀORI STUDIES Māori language is vital to New Zealand, and our identity. As Māori language becomes more widely used through kōhanga reo, primary schools and Kura Kaupapa Māori, parents are becoming more aware of the importance of keeping up with their children’s knowledge of te reo Māori. At Te Ūranga Waka in Hawke’s Bay and Te Whatukura in Te Tairāwhiti, you are offered qualifications from basic introductory level learning through to a specialised masters programme, and given the opportunity to become proficient in Māori customs, culture and research. You can work in government departments, hospital boards, teaching (kōhanga, primary, secondary, and tertiary), or work with local iwi as a liaison or policy advisor. Many employers now prefer bilingual and bicultural employees, especially as te reo Māori is an official language of New Zealand.

She saw a capability which, at the time, I had not yet recognised myself. What can students learn from you? To me it’s more about what we can learn from each other and what they can learn about themselves. I just help facilitate that to happen. Why should someone start to study Te Reo Māori? It is a journey of empowerment, engagement and self-discovery. A journey that has benefits for not only the student but their whole family and wider community. What’s the best thing about teaching at EIT? To witness growth, overcoming challenges and celebrating success in a nurturing environment.

Start your journey to success EIT offers over 150 certificates, degrees and postgraduate programmes in a wide range of subjects. However you define your success, when you study at EIT we’ll give you the experiences and support you need, to help you achieve it. Before you even enrol you can get advice and support from our Liaison Team, Careers Counsellor or Pouwhirinaki. They’ll help explain the financial support available for students too. Scholarships and grants make life easier, and can significantly reduce the financial burden of study. They aren’t all just for academic highflyers either.
Te Ara o Tākitimu (Māori Pasifika Trades Training)* Available for students aged 16 to 40 looking to gain a qualification that leads to an apprenticeship. Funding and study support is available for a wide range of programmes at Levels 3-4.
Youth Scholarship* Students aged 16 to 19 and wanting to study at Levels 1-3 can apply for a Youth Scholarship which can include funding for fees, compulsory course costs, travel, plus academic and other support.
Sport Hawke’s Bay – EIT Sports Scholarship* The Sport Hawke’s Bay – EIT Sports Scholarships have been developed to assist top sports performers to train and study in Hawke’s Bay. Five scholarships of up to $2,000 each are awarded to sports performers enrolled or enrolling in an EIT qualification, to be spent on anything from training fees to equipment or study fees.
