Bachelor of Recreation and Sport Whakawatea: Industry Cooperative projects 2013
Welcome to Whakawatea: Industry Cooperative Whakawatea, which may refer to the closing song, is an apt title for the Industry Cooperative course in the Bachelor of Recreation and Sport programme. Completed by all students in the final year of the degree, this course gives students an opportunity to negotiate a 150-hour practicum experience aligned with the student’s academic and professional interests within the sport, recreation and health industry. Each student initiates, negotiates, develops, refines, implements, and ultimately reports upon a comprehensive project of benefit to their host organisation. Therefore the ‘co-op’ becomes a three-way venture between the student, a sport, recreation or health organisation and an academic supervisor. Each year the students become involved with numerous organisations, and the contribution to the community is a credit to the students, the hosting organisations and EIT. This booklet is designed to present summaries of the Whakawatea, Industry Cooperative projects for 2013. We hope you find it informative, interesting and motivating, whether reading it as a potential student, an interested industry partner, stakeholder, or a current student looking for inspiration for your own industry cooperative project.

Bjorn Constable High School: Karamu High School Placement organisation: ASN – Advance Sports Nutrition
My industry placement has been with an organisation I have worked in for the past few years. Advance Sports Nutrition (ASN), specialises in dietary sport supplements for male and female athletes, gym goers and anyone looking for an aid in fitness or health. This project aims to brand saturate the Hawke’s Bay region to increase awareness of ASN Nutrition in the local community, increase education toward the benefits of supplements, nutritional choice and exercise amongst a male and female fitness target population. Some of the ideas I will be testing include: • Target marketing and promotion toward gym buildings • Sponsor local sporting or fitness events to include the community • Word of mouth around the community • Test tasting days • Open days • Welcome everyone in store I plan to implement at least one marketing or promotional idea every month with the goal of portraying the importance of exercise, healthy nutrition and the benefits of supplements.
Chanel Huddleston High School: William Colenso College Placement organisation: Hawke’s Bay Rugby Union
My extreme passion for women’s rugby has seen me represent Hawke’s Bay for a number of years now. My concern at the current state of women’s rugby regionally led me to pursue an opportunity to give back to a sport that has given so much to me. Following the poor performance of the HB Women’s Rugby team in the 2012 NZ Women’s National Provincial Rugby championship, a year of rebuilding and restructuring was planned by the HB Rugby Union to ensure a more competitive team would re-enter the competition in 2014. Increased resources and funding were to be available to develop school girl rugby and a woman’s 7’s programme. My project involved gaining a greater understanding of the governance structures of the organisation in order to assist in the rebuilding and development of the game for girls and women. The project I worked on developing , “Give it a Go Girls”, is a rugby development programme aimed at increasing awareness and participation amongst women and girls of all ages. My hope is that this programme will reopen pathways that have been closed, such as secondary school girls and women’s representative teams.
Chloe Katene High School: William Colenso College Placement organisation: Central Football
At the time of starting this Industry Cooperative course I was also lucky enough to be given a job as Women’s Development Officer at Central Football. Having played football all my life, this was a dream job, and a great opportunity to develop a project that supported the work I was doing with the development of women’s football. My job involves work with children, mostly girls aged from 4-12, through coaching in clubs and schools. A lot of my administration work entails me to work with clubs, coaches , parents and outside organisations as well. My project involves researching the history and evolution of women in sport and football to help gain a greater understanding of what inspires and motivates females to participate in sport at a competitive level. By increasing the participation of young girls in football it allows for stronger competition through the age groups and a safe environment for women to continue to grow and develop in one of the world’s most popular team sports.
Kristian Day High School: Napier Boys’ High School Placement organisation: Sport Hawke’s Bay and Anderson Park Community Group
My placement with Sport Hawke’s Bay and the Anderson Park Community Group has involved creating a dynamic afterschool sports program for children within the area, that has been named “ 4 friends”. The main focus is to promote dynamic and fun sports to children by focusing on key skills that are taught through games to low number groups of kids. The community we have worked with is lower socio-economic and has strong gang affiliations, so it is hoped this programme will offer an opportunity for the youth to pursue an active and healthy lifestyle through sport. As the programme is low cost and fun, we hope to gain the commitment of the children we are involved with and offer them some positive outcomes. We also use coaches that are trained through the local High School, hence providing positive role models to the children and providing exciting coaching opportunities for the High School students. I have learnt an enormous amount about project planning, communication and collaboration through involvement in this community initiative.
Dean Hepburn High School: Taradale High School Placement organisation: BikeNZ
Cycling is my true passion. I am right into road cycling, and race with Ramblers Cycling club. As part of my training to be a road cycling coach and cycle skills instructor, I have completed my level 1 coach accreditation with BikeNZ. I am now working towards my Skills Active accreditation. My project with BikeNZ has included: • being involved in with BikeNZ’s Introduction to Road and Everyday Cycling programme at several schools. Its purpose is to teach kids knowledge about riding their bikes on the road and also teaches necessary cycle skill used in road cycle racing. • coaching the Taradale Intermediate School boy’s cycling team to compete at the Hawkes Bay Schools champs team time trial, as well as the North Island Intermediate Schools champs, followed by the National Championships. • helping instruct an adults cycle skills course for BikeNZ. The ultimate goal of these activities is to teach people skills and knowledge about cycling safely on our roads. I have already started a coaching business which will focus on coaching juniors, women and those starting out in the road cycling world. I have loved every moment of working with Vicki Butterworth and her team from BikeNZ
Israel McNabb High School: Karamu High School Placement organisation: Swimgym
My interest in assisting people with Cystic Fibrosis led me to arrange a placement that involved working with people with this chronic disease. My employment at the Swim Gym has made me realise there are some population groups who require specific training programmes to counter the impact of their illnesses. The purpose of this project is to work one-on-one with people who suffer from Cystic Fibrosis in order to improve their quality of life through physical exercise. During this project I have worked under the clinical supervision and guidance of a Senior Respiratory Physiotherapist at Hawke’s Bay District Health Board. I have based the exercise plan on academic research and performed appropriate tests to monitor progress. By the end of this project I aim to equip the Swim Gym Centre with a programme they can utilize to promote health care exercise prescription for this population group.
Jack Needes High School: Napier Boys’ High School Placement organisation: Central Football - HB Futsal
Futsal is a recent addition to Central Football’s curriculum in Hawkes Bay, only being in the region for the last 5 years. I have been involved in football all my life, but was never exposed to this small-sided version of the game which is so popular in Brazil and other South American countries. The recent rapid growth of Futsal in New Zealand could ultimately benefit our footballing abilities as a nation. I am involved with HB Futsal in developing a 6-week programme for all Hawke’s Bay Intermediate Schools, as well as specific High Schools. This programme resource needs to be well planned and documented in order for it to be rolled out to other centres if requested. It is hoped this will increase involvement in the sport by giving more young people the opportunity to give it a go. Ultimately the 6-week programme will become a part of the school’s curriculum, and students who have a talent for the sport will be encouraged to join the local leagues outside of school. This opportunity to improve my own personal coaching techniques will hopefully lead to employment within the sport in the future.
James Taylor High School: Karamu High School Placement organisation: Snap Fitness Hastings
New Zealand has got a problem with high levels of obesity, especially within its youth population. My industry cooperative project will look to target this problem by developing a complete training/diet plan for 3 youth members of the gym (each of varying demographics) using pre-testing, a 12-week training programme, diet and nutrition advice and post testing. Ideally they will leave this programme not only continuing with what they have learnt but confident to share their knowledge with friends and family, further increasing this programmes impact.
Laura Manning High School: Taradale High School Placement organisation: Nutrition industry and EIT
My strong interest in nutrition has been the motivation for developing an industry cooperative project with a difference. My placement has two major focuses: •
Nutrition for high performance sport, and
•
Nutrition for Health.
For the first I am working with Marcus Agnew and the development of the High Performance Sports Academy, and the second I am focusing on the health industry in general. Both aspects involve meeting and interviewing key people and organisations within the sport and health industry. Throughout this project I am developing an in-depth understanding of the nutrition industry and services available in Hawke’s Bay. This will hopefully identify areas where nutrition services have the potential to improve or expand their delivery. It may help others recognise the importance of good nutrition in the performance of sport and everyday life.
Laura Jensen High School: Napier Girls’ High School Placement organisation: Hawke’s Bay Regional Sports Park
The limestone track that follows the perimeter of Sports Park Hawke’s Bay was officially opened on 12th March 2013. My project with the Sports Park CEO, Jock MacIntosh, is to promote the new 2.3km Limestone Track. This project has given me the chance to achieve many things, including administrative skills, confidence in public speaking, marketing skills, developing a health and safety plan, and organising an awesome event. The promotional event has been named the “World Record Day”, and involves competitors of all ages running one lap of the track. Winners of each age group will get their name on an honours board. If this event is successful, it will be held annually. I will be promoting this event through schools, families, sports clubs and the general public. The goal of this event is to raise awareness of the great facility we have in Hawke’s Bay, and to facilitate use of the limestone track. I aim to get Hawke’s Bay people active by participating in my event.
Philip Shambrook High School: Southway Comprehensive, Plymouth, England (1968 – 1973) Placement organisation: Eastern Institute of Technology, School of Health and Sport Sciences
During the course of my studies, and my involvement in various sporting activities, it has become apparent that there is a gap in the market for the provision of sport science services in Hawke’s Bay. My project involves assessing the market demand for sport science services in Hawke’s Bay, and the type of services that can be provided. I will be identifying the benefits of a Sport Science Service to external and internal stakeholders, and using the feedback information to support any recommendations that will evolve from this project. A review of current literature concerning the value, or otherwise, of sport science to the sporting community may provide a marketing resource for such a facility, and an information resource for sports administrators, coaches and athletes. EIT is the only facility in Hawke’s Bay with the type of equipment and range of skills available for providing sport science services. I anticipate that the project will produce evidence of the need for a provider of sport science services in Hawke’s Bay. This would create an opportunity for EIT to take the lead and become the centre of excellence for the provision of these services.
Rebecca Goldsbury High School: Central Hawke’s Bay College Placement organisation: Hawke’s Bay Racing
My current interest in the horse racing industry led me to approach Hawke’s Bay Racing (HB Racing) for an industry cooperative placement. This came at a time where there has been decreased public attendance at the races. Hence, my project became focused on reviewing the activities of various other racing clubs, and developing some ideas and strategies to increase the number of people attending the races in Hawke’s Bay, in particular looking ahead to the spring carnival 2014. I took the approach of looking at what HB Racing had to offer the various age groups on race day. The focus has been to increase participation at the races for the 18-30 year old age group. By gathering information from recent HB Racing surveys, searches of other racing club sites, reviewing strategies, conducting interviews with the management team and conducting focus groups, I have come up with a number of new initiatives that will hopefully meet the goals of this project. This project has given me huge insight into working with a management team, gathering relevant information, engaging with stakeholders, and developing customer-focused strategies to improve the future of this highly valued organisation.
Rhys Fallen High School: Tamatea High School Placement organisation: Whatever It Takes Trust and EIT
Project: The challenges of developing and implementing fitness programmes for special populations. This project sets out to explore the challenges of developing and implementing recreation programmes for special population groups. I have had the privilege of working with two separate organisations: Whatever it Takes (WIT) mental health services, and EIT’s Certificate in Work & Life Skills (Supported Learning) students. Before me was an exciting and rewarding challenge, not only to research and understand my placements, but to actively engage in physical activity with these population groups. Based on the premise that physical health is linked to mental wellness, this project has included: • investigating individual motivators and de-motivators • understanding the effects of medication on the individual • use of adaptive equipment for students with physical and intellectual impairment such as Down’s Syndrome, Cerebral Palsy and those on the autistic spectrum My passion to make a difference in people’s lives is what drives me, and success has already been seen in 2013. My hope for the future is that physical activity is recognised as a positive and beneficial component for people with disabilities, and more helpers like me can step up and take on such an influential role.
Stevie-Jean Nicholson High School: Sacred Heart College, Napier Placement organisation: Sport Hawke’s Bay & HB Regional Prison
The project we have been involved in for our industry cooperative came through a collaborative initiative between Sport Hawke’s Bay and the Hawke’s Bay Regional Prison. This new project was designed to create sustainable coaching resources in regards to four sporting codes; rugby league, touch, football and softball. These resources would then be used to teach general aspects of the sport, skills, coaching techniques as well as rules to low-risk inmates at Hawke’s Bay Prison. These skills would enable the trainees to make a valuable contribution to their families and communities on release from prison. This opportunity has given us a good understanding of how an organisation works in regards to project management, funding applications, and how to identify, contact and interact with key stakeholders. The hope is that the participants will move down a positive pathway upon release from prison, helping and enhancing their community, instead of causing disruption through unlawful behaviours. If this program is successful, it can be adopted in other regions, or used in other environments such as train-the-trainers to increase parent participation in school sportscoaching.
