Boeing logs $33 billion in December orders Boeing booked firm orders* for 289 commercial aircraft from 15 customers in December 2016, valued at approximately $32.6 billion at list prices. For 2016, Boeing’s gross commercial aircraft order total was 803 aircraft, valued at $108.6 billion at list prices. Taking full-year reported changes (cancellations) into account, Boeing logged net orders for 668 aircraft through Dec. 31. In December, Boeing delivered 66 commercial aircraft to 31 airlines, five lessors and four unidentified customers. Boeing delivered 728 commercial aircraft* in 2016. An unidentified customer’s order for 100 737 MAX (variant unspecified) capped off the month’s bookings on Dec. 30, valued at approximately $11 billion. A separate unidentified customer placed an order Dec. 28 for 75 737 MAXs, valued at approximately $8.3 billion. A third unidentified customer placed an order for 61 737 MAXs Dec. 27, worth approximately $6.7 billion. All totaled, six unidentified customers ordered 264 737 MAXs; another four unidentified customers ordered 13 737-800s; and two additional unidentified customers ordered three 787-9s. UK leisure airline Jet2 ordered four 737-800s, valued at $384 million, Air Tanzania ordered a single 787-8 and Uzbekistan Airways ordered four 787-8s during the month. Boeing registered changes (cancellations) for 70 737s and 18 787s during the month, bringing the December net order total to 201. Boeing’s December deliveries included six 737-800s to Southwest Airlines; six aircraft to United Airlines (three 737-900ERs, two 777300ERs and one 737-800); and three aircraft each to American Airlines (two 737-800s and a 787-9) and Dubai-based Emirates Airline (all 777-300ERs). .

Additional 777-300ER deliveries during the month went to Kuwait Airways (which took two), and single deliveries of the model to Air China, US lessor Intrepid Aviation, and four separate unidentified customers. Additionally, Korean Air took delivery of a 777 freighter. Spanish carrier Air Europa took delivery of two 787-8s during the month. Colombia’s Avianca and Royal Air Maroc each took delivery of a single 787-8 as well. Additional 787-9 deliveries for December included one each of the model to Aeromexico, All Nippon Airways, British Airways, China’s Hainan Airlines, Japan Airlines and China’s Xiamen Airlines. Full-year 2016 and December 2016 orders and deliveries figures for Airbus are expected to be released Jan. 11. *Note: ATW does not count military, government or private customer orders or deliveries in its commercial aircraft tallies. Boeing Fails To Meet 2016 Order Goal Boeing on Friday issued year-end commercial airplane sales figures that fell short of its 2016 guidance of a 1:1 book-to-bill ratio, suggesting a somewhat less robust market for its airliners than expected early in the year. While delivering 748 commercial airplanes in 2016, it booked net orders for 668 worth $94 billion at list prices. The total backlog at the end of the year stood at 5,715 unfilled orders. The 777’s net order count of 17 airplanes made the company’s flagship widebody one of its weakest performers in terms of sales, as well as the biggest contributor to the shortfall in bookto-bill ratio. Boeing delivered ninety-nine 777s, resulting in a book-to-bill ratio of roughly .17 to 1 for the model. ―Softening‖ in the widebody market prompted Boeing to announce plans to cut production on the 777 to five airplanes a month in August, a move that it said will result in a loss of both jobs and a ―modest‖ effect on financial results. Now building 8.3 of the twin-engine widebodies per month, Boeing had already announced a rate reduction to seven to compensate for weakening demand for the legacy 777 as the company prepares to transition production to the new 777X. A production rate of five per month effectively translates into a delivery rate of 3.5 as Boeing institutes plans to ―fire blanks‖ down the line as part of its ―Lean‖ implementation and dedicate some airplanes to 777X flight testing. Meanwhile, the 787 also registered a relatively weak year in terms of sales, as the Dreamliner family drew 58 net orders compared with 137 deliveries during the year. Order cancellations proved particularly high for the 787, given its gross order intake of 80 airplanes.

While the 737 line, as usual, accounted for most of the company’s net orders at 550, it too experienced a high number of cancellations. Its gross order count of 701 equated to a cancellation total of 151. Boeing’s recent loss of an order for eighteen 787s, originally placed by Northwest Airlines before its merger with Delta Air Lines, played a particularly large role in the Dreamliner’s contribution to the book-tobill shortfall. Meanwhile, Boeing’s orderbook still does not reflect a recent agreement with Iran Air covering 80 airplanes. Boeing expects to register that order in its 2017 tally. Happily for Boeing, a recent order for 75 Boeing 737 Max 8s from GECAS and five more from Czech leisure airline Travel Service did appear in its 2016 books, closing the book-to-bill gap considerably during the last week of December. In fact, those orders meant that Boeing collected orders for 60 more 737s than it delivered in 2016. Boeing can also take some consolation that its European rival, Airbus, also appears unlikely to meet its 1:1 book-to-bill target for 2016. Although Airbus plans to announce its final sales and delivery tallies next Wednesday, sales announcements for December appear unlikely to compensate for a shortfall suggested at the end of November, by which time the company had drawn net orders for 410 airplanes. Its guidance for 2016 called for delivery of 650 airplanes, meaning it would have had to add net orders for 240 in December alone to reach its 1:1 book-to-bill target.

Boeing achieves strong delivery numbers in 2016 Boeing recorded strong commercial delivery numbers in 2016 and achieved several airplane program milestones. The company delivered 748 commercial airplanes. Boeing booked 668 net orders, valued at US$94.1bn at list prices. The backlog at the end of the year stood at 5,715 unfilled commercial orders. Airplane development programs continued to make progress in 2016. Key milestones for the year included the first flight of the 737 MAX, the opening of the 777X Composite Wing Center in Everett, Wash., and start of 787-10 final assembly in North Charleston, S.C.

Boeing delivers fewer airplanes in 2016, but not by much A 787-9 Dreamliner is rolled out of Boeing’s paint hangar. Boeing saw a slight uptick in 787 deliveries in 2016, according to figures the company released on Friday. Gail Hanusa/Boeing Courtesy photo BY JERRY SIEBENMARK It’s hard to top a record year for airplane deliveries, and that was the case for Boeing in 2016. The commercial planemaker on Friday reported its 2016 deliveries, and they were off by 2 percent from 2015, when Boeing delivered the jetliners. Boeing said 2016 deliveries totaled 748 compared with 762 the year before. Whether that number places Boeing No. 1 for jetliner deliveries is unclear. Its European rival, Airbus, is set to report its 2016 deliveries on Wednesday. Of those 2016 deliveries, 490 were for its most-popular airplane, the narrowbody 737. That compares with 495 737 deliveries in 2015. It also delivered half as many 747s as the prior year, and three fewer 767s. But it saw year-over-year gains for 787 Dreamliner deliveries, by two airplanes, and the 777, by one airplane.

NEW AIRBUS BELUGA XL STARTS FINAL ASSEMBLY MIAMI — The next generation of Airbus Super Transporters is finally taking shape, as the first Beluga XL airframe has begun its 18-month final assembly process at the company’s at Lagardère industrial zone, adjacent to Toulouse-Blagnac Airport. Launched in November 2014, the core airframe of the Beluga XL is based on the Airbus A330-200 freighter, with a large re-use of existing components and equipment. This element was assembled last December, without a nose fuselage or tail assembly – both of which will be added during activity planned in 2017. The first metal cut took place over a year ago in Spain’s Aernnova, after completing the detailed design phase. The Beluga XL core airframe is an extract of an Airbus A330-200 freighter that already has been structurally reinforced, providing the platform on which the next-generation oversize cargo airlifter’s airframe will be built. (Credits: Airbus S.A.S.) The new generation of Beluga Super Transporters will be powered with Rolls Royce Trent 700s, one of the engine options available in the current Airbus A330 program, and will incorporate newlydeveloped elements such as a lowered cockpit, cargo bay structure, and rear and tail sections. In the first year of assembly, the aiframe will be completed, together with the fitting of its mechanical and electrical systems, and in the last six months of this project, the aircraft will be moved to a second station for ground testing and engine installation. ―The coming year of final integration will be a series of small steps,‖ said Beluga XL programme head Bertrand George. ―The number of holes to be drilled and fasteners to be installed is far bigger than on any other Airbus aircraft. Sticking to schedule at each step is the key to being ready for first flight in 2018. I fully trust the capability of our teams to make it happen together.‖

The new Super Transporters will come on time to address the capacity requirements, besides replacing the current A300-600ST Super Transporters in service since 1996 with Airbus Transport International (ATI). According to Airbus, the Beluga XL will be able to carry a full set of A350 XWB wings, while providing Airbus with an additional 30 percent extra transport capacity when compared to the current Beluga aircraft. ―Payload was the big driver for us,‖ explained Jean-Marc Passuello – leader of a cross-functional Airbus delivery team responsible for the development of major component assemblies. ―We knew what the Beluga XL had to be able to carry, and that meant making some changes.‖ To date, the Beluga ferries complete sections of Airbus aircraft, produced at various sites around Europe, to the final assembly lines in Toulouse, Hamburg and Seville.
