LISBON // A Qatar Airways jet made an emergency landing at a Portuguese military base in the Azores islands on Sunday after heavy turbulence injured passengers. The Boeing 777, bound from Washington to Doha, was re-routed during a storm to the Azores, a Portuguese territory in the North Atlantic, and landed at the Lajes Air Base. Officials and witnesses said the plane had dropped steeply in altitude, hurling several passengers out of their seats and causing one traveller to suffer heart trouble. "All the passengers were taken to a hotel in the evening and are due to depart on Monday morning," said an airbase spokesman, adding that several people onboard had "suffered light injuries during the turbulence". "There was a medical emergency as one of the passengers had a cardiac complaint during the turbulence," a civil protection official in the Azores said. "He was hospitalised along with two other passengers." Azad Essa, an Al Jazeera journalist who was on board, tweeted: "Some passengers bleeding after flung in the air, hitting the ceiling + landing in the aisles after plane suddenly lost altitude."

https://citizentv.co.ke Kenya Airways flights disrupted as technicians down tools Kenya Airways has announced major flight delays following a strike by members of its technical department. The airline technicians have downed their tools from five am citing poor pay and an obsolete operational structure. “We would like to advise our guests that we are experiencing some delays due to a number of our technicians not showing up for work. This has caused inconveniences to our guests and is highly regretted. We are working to reduce these disruptions,“ Kenya Airways said in a statement. According to Kenya Airways at least nine flights have been delayed. Affected flights so far include KQ650/480/782/576//400/572/434/350/520 out of the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA). The airline has requested passengers to call the airline to check on the status of their flights. The management is said to be working to minimize the disruptions caused. “Our technical team is a vital part of our business and we are working together to resolve any outstanding issues,“ the airline said. Kenya Airways Group Managing Director Mbuvi Ngunze via a letter dated December 2 termed the industrial action illegal, urging employees in the technical department to allow time for consultations. “As communicated previously in town halls and through the technical director, management is in the process of addressing pertinent issues affecting our staff in the department and any illegal action at this stage will not only interrupt the process, but undermine the progress so far made in addressing the issues,“ Mr Ngunze said.

https://www.atn.aero ETIHAD AVIATION GROUP BOARD APPROVES JOINT VENTURE TO CREATE MAJOR EUROPEAN LEISURE AIRLINE GROUP The Etihad Aviation Group (EAG) Board has approved plans to create a new European leisure airline group in a joint venture with TUI AG, with a fleet of around 60 aircraft, offering 15 million seats capacity per year, focused on point-to-point flying to connect key European tourist markets. The transaction is subject to approvals by aviation regulatory bodies and anti-trust authorities. The planned transaction includes an agreement for EAG’s subsidiary Etihad Investment Holding Company LLC (Etihad) to acquire the 49.8 per cent share indirectly held by airberlin in its subsidiary airline NIKI Luftfahrt GmbH. At closing of the transaction, Etihad will immediately contribute the share in NIKI to the new European leisure airline group and will not effectively control, or become a majority owner of NIKI. TUI will contribute its subsidiary TUIfly GmbH to the joint venture, including the 14 aircraft currently operated by TUIfly for airberlin under a wet-lease agreement. This follows approval on Wednesday 23 November 2016 by TUI AG’s Supervisory Board. TUI AG will hold 24.8 per cent of shares in the joint venture company, with Etihad holding a 25 per cent stake. The remaining 50.2 per cent will continue to be held by the existing private foundation NIKI Privatstiftung. The new leisure airline group, headquartered in Vienna, is scheduled to begin operations in April 2017, the start of the summer season, serving a broad network of destinations from Germany, Austria and Switzerland (Hanover, Berlin, Düsseldorf, Cologne, Frankfurt, Stuttgart, Munich, Nuremberg, Baden-Baden, Hamburg, Basel and Vienna). Key markets will include the Balearics, Canaries, mainland Spain and Greece. The joint venture will be supported by the expertise of Etihad Aviation Group, the fastest-growing aviation group in the world, and TUI Group, the world’s leading tourism business with a strong focus on hotels and cruises. It will be able to leverage synergies and economies of scale accessible through Etihad Airways Partners and the TUI Group to ensure a lean overhead structure and competitive production cost. Further details regarding the future joint venture will be jointly presented by Etihad and TUI after successful completion of the negotiations.

Malaysia Airlines bookings jump PETALING JAYA: Malaysia Airlines Bhd (MAS) has benefitted from a combination of aggressive marketing strategy and the adjustment in passenger service charges (PSC) for flights within the Asean region. Forward bookings at MAS for the next six months are 50% more than a year ago, said its group chief executive officer Peter Bellew. “The airline has had tremendous group booking enquiries from the Asean region, spiking by almost 400%,“ he said. Apart from an aggressive sales campaign by the airline over the past months, Bellew said the “equalisation“ of the PSC has had an even better impact than expected on the airline“. The new PSC charges come into effect on Jan 1, with uniform charges for all Asean destinations at RM35 in both the KL International Airport (KLIA) and KLIA2. It replaces the old structure where it is RM65 for all international travels, which includes Asean, at KLIA and RM32 in KLIA2, which is positioned as an airport for low-cost carriers. “We are seeing great forward bookings and our loads are good ... this would be a great boost for us and Malaysian tourism,“ he said in response to queries from StarBiz. Although the forward bookings are encouraging, yields are depressed, a worldwide conundrum given the intense competition. The weaker ringgit will have an impact on the airline, as will the stronger US dollar, as most of its costs are in dollars. “Yields dipped slightly in the third quarter, but this is something affecting most airlines. We expect this to improve in the fourth quarter,“ Bellew said. “We do expect heightened competition with over-capacity in the market, with both players (AirAsia Bhd and Malindo Air) bringing in extra aircraft into Malaysia. This would be good for the customers, but would put pressure on the airlines,“ he added. MAS’ yields for the third quarter ended Sept 30, 2016 was 21.75 sen, down from 22.5 sen in the second quarter, despite passenger revenues for the third quarter rising 12% over the second quarter, led by aggressive sales campaigns. The yield has a direct impact on the bottom line of the airline operations. Traditionally, the fourth quarter is the best quarter for airlines, but the ringgit’s weakness has been intense after Nov 8. Bellew said the weaker ringgit would have an impact on airline operations and would be made worse by the keen competition in the Malaysian market. “The volatility of the dollar is a major concern, given that most of our costs are in US dollars. However, the lower cost of fuel, which we have hedged as much as possible, will balance out the rise of the US dollar,“ he said.

“We will have to be extra diligent and focused on costs in 2017, but we remain cautiously optimistic.“ MAS had hedged about 60% to 70% of jet fuel requirements for 2017 at US$65 a barrel. “We have been working hard on fuel management and efficiency, implementing initiatives that will ensure optimised consumption of fuel both in the air and on the ground. “These include improved flight speeds, weight on the aircraft and the uploading of fuel. This is one of the many initiatives we are working on. Any savings will always be passed on to our customers,“ said Bellew, without elaborating. He expects unit costs to fall by a further 3% in financial year 2017. Bellew joined the airline as its chief operating officer a year ago, and was appointed group CEO in July. He is also group CEO of MAS’ parent, Malaysia Aviation Group Bhd. Asked how the three months have been, Bellew said the company has made good progress and the aggressive sales and marketing campaigns had resonated with customers. “Passengers vote with their feet and our forward bookings in the next six months, up by 50% from a year ago, show that we are on the right track“. “I am an impatient man and I do wish things could have moved faster. There is still a long way to go but with the progress we have seen in the quarter, I remain optimistic,“ he said. MAS, which was taken private by Khazanah Nasional last year after years of chalking up losses, is expected to record a lower loss this year. However, the restructuring efforts that has gone into the airline since being taken private is expected to turn the airline profitable next year. Last week, he shared the airline’s quarterly statistical performance for the three months ended Sept 30, 2016. Passenger loads improved system-wide from 69% in the second quarter to 79% in the third quarter. It was 74% in the third quarter of 2015. However no profit and loss numbers were dislosed. Bellew hopes to bump up passenger loads to 80% next year. From January to September, the airline carried 10.1 million passengers, and for full-year 2016, he is looking at 14 million, and over 15 million for 2017. The airline’s market share on its only long-haul route to London, which suffers from intense competition, has seen a 15% increase to 59% in September from 49% in May. Passenger revenue was 12% higher in the third quarter over the previous quarter, and a reduced net operating level loss of 7% compared to the second quarter. However, on-time performance was significantly lower at 68% in the third quarter from 82% in the second quarter due to several internal and external factors.

http://centreforaviation.com/ Airline strikes: 2016 a peak year for Europe's legacy airlines. Wakeup time, as LCCs pick them off Pilot strikes at Lufthansa. Again. A strike ballot among British Airways cabin crew. A guilty verdict for Air France workers who assaulted an executive during a union protest. These were all headlines in late Nov-2016, following Air France pilot and cabin crew strikes in summer 2016. Labour relations at Europe's three biggest legacy airline groups are an ongoing challenge. A CAPA report in Jun-2016 highlighted the growing number of articles on CAPA's website mentioning the word 'strike'. It raised the possibility that if the rate continued through the year, 2016 could be the biggest year for strike-related articles since before the global financial crisis. With a little under a month still to go, this year has already comfortably passed this milestone. To a large extent labour unrest grows as airline industry profits increase. However, rather than hoping for an industry downturn to reverse the rise in the cycle of strikes, airline CEOs are talking tough – a line long taken by IAG's Willie Walsh. Lufthansa's Carsten Spohr has said that taking on the pilots is "about the future of Lufthansa", noting that it has “no chance of survival" if it gives in to pay demands
