1 www.inc.com American Airlines Gave This Passenger a $600 Travel Voucher. So Why Did the Airline Take It Back? Absurdly Driven looks at the world of business with a skeptical eye and a firmly rooted tongue in cheek. Once you've booked your travel, you have certain expectations. Alright, hopes. Alright, you cross your fingers, keep checking your email and phone for flight delay notifications and pray that the airline won't tell you your bags are two ounces overweight. Things still go wrong. Which is what happened to an American Airlines passenger called Spencer, who relayed his tale of woe to One Mile At a Time. Spencer was flying from Philadelphia to Palm Springs via Phoenix a couple of weeks ago. All went well. Until, sadly, he got to Phoenix. It's a nice enough place, but less hospitable when you're told: "Ah, you're being bumped. We're flying a smaller plane." Because bumping passengers has become a more human affair, American offered Spencer a $600 travel voucher and a seat on a later flight. This he accepted. It seems, though, that he was finally seated on his original flight -which had been delayed for several hours. Spencer was a touch miffed by all this. So he wrote to American and expressed his miffedness. American replied, he says, and offered his 3,000 miles as further compensation. Some might say he now had the best deal he could have hoped for. Spencer, however, thought the 3,000 miles a touch offensive. So he wrote again. This time, American offered 7,500 miles. Oh, and it told him his $600 travel voucher had been revoked.
صورة أرشٌفٌة
2 www.inc.com
Why? Because, said the airline, he'd been seated on the original flight after all. I fear that might not have been the entire reason. I fear Spencer's persistence may not have sat well with someone at American. Sometimes, you see, these things linger in the tone of the communication. American wrote to him:
In the spirit of goodwill and appreciation for being a loyal AAdvantage member, I've issued you an additional 7,500 bonus miles. Please note that this consideration is an exception due to the circumstances you have described and is not a normal practice in regard to flight delays that fall under 12 hours. The spirit of goodwill is hardly what one would associate with taking away a travel voucher. Neither is the concept of appreciation. And is American really suggesting that you have to be delayed for 12 hours before it will offer compensation? I contacted American to ask for its comment, or perhaps even a translation of its missive to Spencer. An airline spokesperson told me:
We have reached out to the passenger to resolve this issue. There are ways to complain and, well, other ways to complain. Could it be that Spencer was a touch too persistent? Could it be that, having been dealt a 17 by the blackjack dealer, he should have not asked for another card? To my life-addled soul, it all seems simple. Spencer signed an agreement, freely offered by American, to accept a $600 travel voucher. He should have it. (And, who knows, perhaps he now does. Again.) This story is still a reminder that airline staff now have more discretion to compensate passengers for imperfect service. Indeed, American recently warned its staff that they were being a touch too kind with the compensation and to tone down the niceness. Being human is hard. Sometimes, you just aren't sure how human to be.

The unidentified passenger became unglued on a Thursday flight from Las Vegas to San Antonio, Texas, fellow passenger Clifton McBee said to News4 San Antonio. McBee, who recorded the more than two-minute footage of the man yelling inflight, said everyone on the plane could hear the passenger’s outburst. FRONTIER AIRLINES PASSENGERS GET INTO SHOVING FIGHT AFTER BUMPING INTO EACH OTHER WHILE DEPLANING "You don't want to go sleep, cause what's the guy going to do?‖ said McBee to News4. ―You hope security did their job.― The man was placed in handcuffs and escorted off the plane by police officers. In the cellphone video taken by McBee, the man continues to scream and yell obscenities in the terminal. At one point the man becomes upset asking about his five-year-old child and the police officer tackles him to the ground to keep him still until more officers arrive. ―It seemed like the more people that were around, the angrier he got,‖ said McBee to News4. ―It seemed like he wanted to put on a show for everybody.‖ FRONTIER AIRLINES PASSENGER ARRESTED AFTER PEEING ON SEAT IN FRONT OF HIM DURING FLIGHT The man can be heard screaming at officers about his son. He also repeatedly informed officers that they were hurting ―his surgery,‖ and claimed that he had bullets in his body that were causing him discomfort. ―Sir, I’m disabled, I’ve got bullets in my f---ing body, and I’m f---ing hurt,‖ he said to the officer, before turning his head to yell at bystanders. It was reported that ―authorities took care of the child,‖ when the man was taken off the flight.

http://www.theedgemarkets.com Malaysia Airlines' bookings can now be confirmed via WhatsApp KUALA LUMPUR (Sept 3): Malaysia Airlines Bhd (MAB) today launched its official presence via the WhatsApp Business solution to allow customers to receive flight status and booking confirmation through the messaging application. More services will follow in the platform, including check-in, schedule and other operational notifications, MAB said in a statement today. MAB is one of the first few airlines in the world and the first in Malaysia to integrate with the platform, said group chief executive officer Izham Ismail. Other airlines include KLM Royal Dutch Airlines, which was the first airline to introduce the integration with WhatsApp in September last year. ―We are extremely excited to be the first in Malaysia and one of the first few airlines in the world to offer this new service on WhatsApp,‖ Izham said. ―The WhatsApp Business solution will enable us to reach out to more passengers, as WhatsApp is one of the most popular messaging applications with more than 1.5 billion users worldwide,‖ he added. MAB’s entry into the Whatsapp Business is the airline’s fourth recently-announced digital solutions, after MHguardian, MHfeedback and MHchat which were introduced in April 2018. Malaysia Airlines’ customers can opt in to this service by sending any WhatsApp message to the number 03-87774570 or by clicking on http://bit.ly/mhwhatsapp.

1 runwaygirlnetwork.com Tight connections drive Lufthansa automated, selfservice mini-lounge If you don’t have time to visit the lounge owing to an early morning flight or a late connection, what can airlines do to keep a premium traveller keen, and keep them coming back? A six-month trial of a new Lufthansa automated self-service space in the departures area — which the airline tells me will start in Munich this week — starts asking that very question. Though details are scant, ―Delights to Go‖ seems to be a scan-your-way-in, self-service space that Lufthansa is trialling for passengers cutting it close with a departure or whose ever-tighter connections are stretched. On offer are on-demand snack boxes and hot drinks, dispensed from a multilingual kiosk accessed via boarding pass scans. I asked Lufthansa for details and images, but a media representative declined to share any further details or images when I asked, saying that they might be available five days hence. German website Flugrevue, however, seems to have snapped some images of the concept at the reveal earlier in the week, with a single shot of what Lufthansa tells me is ―a photo of the mock up poster‖. Part of me likes the concept and applauds Lufthansa for trying it. I can’t count the number of times I’ve had to hoof it through Frankfurt on a connection stretched to breaking point as the result of Lufthansa operational problems. Being able to stop and grab a to-go box could certainly be handy. Flugrevue also says that the snack box — rather aspirationally named Genießer Box, which to my beginner’s German using Google Translate comes out as ―gourmet‖ and, er, ―box‖ — will contain an apple, a cereal/nut bar, a piece of cake and a small bottle of water. This seems a little underwhelmingly shelf-stable, and one shudders to think of the packaging waste. To start at the beginning of the Delights to Go experience, Lufthansa will need to look at how it staffs the kiosk. Peering at the details of the Flugrevue snap, the staff member doesn’t seem to be wearing a Lufthansa uniform. As frequent premium class travellers and frequent flyers through Lufthansa’s main airports know, the airline has outsourced many of the ―lounge greeter‖ positions at its lounges to the multi-service staffing organisations best known across Europe for private sector prisons, and indeed the warmth of the welcome seems to carry over.
صورة أرشٌفٌة
2 https://www.travelweekly.com
I’m also not sure why, if there’s a gate dragon, it’s necessary to complicate matters with an automated vending machine. I can just imagine the thing breaking down during the morning rush and the resulting queue of undercaffeinated, unimpressed frequent flyers. Would a simple soda fridge, snack basket and Nespresso machine perhaps make more sense — or indeed some sort of automated token system handed out by the staffer to prevent the inevitable sweep-it-into-thecabin-bag troughing of what’s on offer? It also strikes me that the point about stretched connections is really Lufthansa saying it’s trying to solve a problem that it creates itself. To my mind — and the minds of many others — the airline offers many unrealistic minimum connection times, particularly in Frankfurt, especially when crossing the Schengen border, given that it is one of Europe’s worst laid out and least connection-friendly airports. At the end of the day, though, I can’t help wondering whether my threshold for ―delight‖ is a little higher than the airline’s. An apple and nut bar — especially when Lufthansa has for some time offered a free coffee machine in some boarding areas — doesn’t quite qualify for ―delight‖. Is there a German word for ―mild satisfaction following operational disappointment owing to sub-optimal logistical and location planning of premium travel benefits‖? Perhaps my problem is that the offering reminds me of a watered-down and less impressive version of the Air New Zealand regional lounge space on the turboprop side of Christchurch Airport. There’s a full lounge in the jet section of the terminal, but with minimal service on its turboprops, Air NZ offers its lounge-eligible travellers the chance of a hot bite to eat and a coffee from a semi-private, swipe-to-enter space. It’s actually just a bit of cleverly fenced off terminal area that backs on to a café, whose staff and supplies furnish the lounge offering. Would that be just as ―go‖ but even more ―delight‖?

1 www.ainonline.com Accidents: September 2018 Preliminary Reports Missed Turn Preceded Nature Air Disaster Cessna 208, Dec. 31, 2017, Punta Islita, Costa Rica—A witness reported that the second of two Nature Air Caravans departing the Islita Airport failed to make the right turn toward the only pass through the surrounding hills. Instead, the Caravan, which took off about 15 minutes after company traffic, maintained runway heading into a rising valley that ends in a blind canyon. All 10 passengers and both pilots were killed. Details of the pilots’ experience and familiarity with the terrain have yet to be disclosed. Costa Rica’s Civil Aviation Administration suspended the operating certificate of Nature Air, which advertises itself as the country’s ―largest domestic airline,‖ on January 11, but restored its authorization to fly on February 5. All of the passengers were U.S. citizens; both pilots were Costa Rican nationals. First Legal Actions Filed in Mumbai King Air Accident King Air C90B, June 28, 2018, Mumbai, India—The husband of copilot Marya Zuberi, one of five killed when the King Air crashed into a construction site on its first test flight following extensive renovations, has filed police complaints requesting investigations not only of the airplane’s operator and its maintenance provider, but also airport operator Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), the Airports Authority of India )AAI(, and India’s Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA). Prabhat Kathuria’s filings allege that the operator pressured his wife, the pilot, and the two engineers killed in the accident to attempt the test flight despite unsuitable weather, and also fault the BMC for allowing incompatible high-rise development under the approach paths to Mumbai’s Juhu Airport. His claim that the King Air was ―not better than a junk aircraft‖ extensively used for technician training was disputed by owner UY Aviation, which claims to have spent five times the aircraft’s purchase price rebuilding it for service as an air ambulance. Maintenance provider Indamer MRO’s inventory of parts replaced during that effort includes both engines and propellers, landing gear, brakes, and flight instrumentation. The aircraft accumulated more than a month of ground testing between initial authorization from the DGCA and the actual test flight.

2 www.ainonline.com Terrain Alerts Suppressed in Alaska Floatplane Crash de Havilland DHC-3T, July 10, 2018, Hydaburg, Alaska—The pilot of a Turbine Otter that crashed into a mountainside between Steamboat Bay and Ketchikan told NTSB investigators that the floatplane’s terrain awareness and warning system )TAWS( was in ―inhibited‖ mode to suppress ground proximity warnings. Six of the ten passengers on board the Taquan Air charter flight suffered serious injuries when their airplane hit Jumbo Mountain on Prince of Wales Island while maneuvering around low clouds. The other four passengers escaped with minor injuries, while the pilot was unhurt. The NTSB’s preliminary report, released on July 17, includes two passengers’ accounts of the airplane flying in and out of clouds just before the crash; one reported texting the passenger in the copilot’s seat to request that he ask the pilot to turn around. The pilot reported that visibility decreased ―from about three to five miles to nil‖ as the floatplane entered the Sulzer Portage. After initiating a climbing 180-degree turn, he was ―momentarily disoriented‖ by what appeared to be a body of water ahead. By the time he recognized the mountainside in front of the airplane and attempted a steep emergency climb at full power, the aircraft was no longer in a position to clear terrain. Coast Guard rescuers located the wreckage more than four hours after the accident and evacuated the victims to Ketchikan with the assistance of Temco Helicopters. In its preliminary report, the NTSB drew attention to its Safety Recommendation A-17-35, issued in the wake of a fatal June 2015 accident involving a Turbine Otter in the same vicinity, which calls for the FAA to ―implement ways to provide effective terrain awareness and warning system (TAWS) protections while mitigating nuisance alerts for single-engine airplanes operated under 14 Code of Federal Regulations Part 135 that frequently operate at altitudes below their respective TAWS class design alerting threshold.‖ The FAA has yet to respond.

3 www.ainonline.com Final Reports Failure To Use Supplemental Oxygen Led to Uncontrolled Descent Cessna 501, May 23, 2016, Texarkana, Arkansas—Contrary to federal aviation regulations, the sole pilot of a Cessna Citation was not wearing an oxygen mask when the jet experienced an explosive decompression at FL430. The 15,000-hour airline transport pilot and all three passengers lost consciousness and the jet entered an uncontrolled descent, plunging 36,000 feet before the pilot regained consciousness and recovered control of the aircraft. Both wings were damaged by the aerodynamic loads imposed during the recovery, but the emergency landing in Texarkana was uneventful. In its final report, the NTSB traced the sudden loss of cabin pressure to the combination of a loose clamp that allowed the air conditioning system’s primary pressurization duct to become disconnected from the water separator and a fractured flapper in the aft bulkhead check valve. The separation of the duct diverted pressurized air into the unpressurized section of the airframe, while the broken flapper allowed existing cabin pressure to escape. A Phase 5 inspection of the 1980-model airplane had been completed 38 days before the accident at a total time in service of 7,424.8 hours. Errors by Ground Crew and Pilot Combined to Cause Fuel Exhaustion McDonnell Douglas 369D, July 17, 2016, 36 km northwest of Hawker, Southern Australia—An interruption during his preflight inspection led the pilot to omit a visual check of the helicopter’s fuel levels, thereby failing to detect that the support crew had not refueled it the previous evening as claimed. The helicopter was one hour, forty-five minutes into a planned three-hour powerline inspection when its engine ―just stopped‖ at an altitude of 100 feet. The pilot was able to steer the craft away from the wires toward a clear area, but he and the two utility workers on board suffered significant head, back, and spinal injuries in the hard landing that resulted. There was no post-crash fire. The fuel system remained intact, and investigators found no usable fuel in the wreckage. The helicopter had been equipped with an auxiliary tank with a usable capacity of 115 liters (30 gallons) fabricated of stainless steel and located in the right rear side of the cabin. It was not equipped with a fuel gauge, sight glass, or any other quantity indicator. A solenoid valve operated by a switch on the instrument panel allowed fuel to flow by gravity into the main tank; a green light illuminated when the solenoid was energized, but the system provided no direct indication of fuel flow.

Before the flight, the pilot requested full fuel and was erroneously told that it had been refueled the previous evening, perhaps due to confusion with fueling between two flights that day. A discussion with another crew interrupted his preflight inspection and he forgot to look inside the auxiliary fuel tank’s filler neck, the only way to confirm it had been filled. The main tank’s gauge was a non-linear design intended to read more accurately at low levels than high, with very little difference in needle position between readings of ―full‖ and three-quarters, and the position of the sun at the time of the accident made the instrument panel’s low fuel indicator light difficult to see. Investigators also identified miscommunication in the approval process that led CASA to approve the auxiliary tank for normalcategory operations when in fact approval had been intended only for temporary use during ferry flights. In response, the operator removed the auxiliary tanks from its entire fleet, requiring all aerial work to be conducted on the main tanks with adequate reserves. Fatigue, Recent Transition Implicated in Lake Erie Crash Cessna 525C, Dec. 29, 2016, Cleveland, Ohio—The pilot of a Cessna CJ4 that crashed into Lake Erie killing all six on board apparently believed that the airplane was flying on autopilot even though he never actually engaged it. The accident occurred just before 11 p.m. on a moonless night, making it unlikely that he was able to see the lake’s surface before impact. The NTSB noted that by that time the pilot had been awake for 17 hours, may have been susceptible to fatigue, and that he had less than nine hours as pilot-in-command of that model. Its instrumentation and panel layout differed significantly from those of the Cessna 510 (Mustang) he had previously owned and flown more than 370 hours.

The pilot, his wife, two sons, and two family friends had flown in from Columbus three hours earlier to attend a professional basketball game. The return flight was expected to take 30 minutes at an altitude of 12,000 feet. At 10:56 p.m., the jet was cleared to take off from Runway 24R of Cleveland’s Burke Lakefront Airport with instructions to turn right to a heading of 330 degrees and maintain an altitude of 2,000 feet. ADS-B track data showed that the Citation initially climbed at a rate of 6,000 fpm, reaching a maximum altitude of 2,925 feet 30 seconds after takeoff, then began to descend as its right turn reached a bank angle of 62 degrees and its pitch attitude decreased to 15 degrees nose-down. Impact occurred just over one minute after it began its takeoff roll. Comparison of the instrument panels of the Mustang and CJ4 showed that the autopilot engagement buttons are in different locations, and there is not an adjacent indicator light in the CJ4. The only annunciation of autopilot engagement in the 525C is in the flight system status display in the upper section of the primary flight display (PFD). The PFD’s attitude indicator displays also differ, and the NTSB cited ―negative learning transfer‖ as a factor in his failure to recognize that the autopilot had not engaged and the airplane was entering an unusual attitude.
