http://aaco.org/ Dubai airport traffic up 6.6% in August Dubai International (DXB) registered another month of record passenger traffic with 8,233,311 in August compared to 7,727,105 recorded in the same month in 2016, an increase of 6.6% according to the monthly traffic report issued by operator Dubai Airports. The first eight month of 2017 traffic totalled 59,353,368 passengers up 6.3% compared to 55,851,148 recorded during the first eight months of 2016. During August South America (27.4%) was the fastest expanding market in terms of percentage growth followed by Asia (21.9%), and Eastern Europe (18.8%). In terms of passenger volumes, India remained the top destination country with 1,044,730 passengers in August, followed by the UK (611,254 passengers) and Saudi Arabia (610,434 passengers). London was the top destination city with 377,130 passengers followed closely by Kuwait (284,151 passengers) and Mumbai (211,564 passengers). The average number of passengers per flight during the month remained high at 246, up 7.2% compared to 229 recorded in August 2016. Flight movements totalled 34,370 during the month under review compared to 34,967 recorded in August 2016, marginally down by 1.7%. In the first eight months of 2017 flight movement totalled 274,549, down 1.5% compared to 278,799 recorded during the first eight months in 2016. Freight volumes surged to 221,508 tonnes in August, up 10.1% compared to 201,100 tonnes recorded in the corresponding month in 2016. In the first eight months of 2017 cargo reached 1,737,676 tonnes up 3% compared to 1,686,277 tonnes recorded in the same period of 2016.

flydubai has announced the start of flights to Montenegro’s capital, Podgorica, on 01 November 2017. The airline will operate two flights weekly to Podgorica including a stopover in Sarajevo. Emirates announced that it will introduce three additional flights per week to Stockholm, the Swedish capital, starting 8 December 2017, complementing Emirates’ existing schedule. The three new weekly flights will offer passengers travelling from Stockholm the chance to reach over 70 Emirates destinations in Asia, Australasia, Africa and the Middle East. Operated by Emirates’ Boeing 777-300ER aircraft in a three-class configuration, the new flights will offer eight Private Suites in First Class, 42 seats in Business and 310 seats in Economy.

www.flightglobal.com Malaysia Airlines signs LOI with AerCap for six A330-200s Malaysia Airlines has signed a letter of intent with AerCap to lease six Airbus A330-200 aircraft that were formerly in service with Air Berlin. The leases will run from 2018 to 2023, and be used to upgauge high-demand medium haul routes, says the carrier. The aircraft will replace six Boeing 737s that are being returned to lessors. The aircraft are being powered by Pratt & Whitney PW4000 engines. This is the same powerplant found on the carrier's existing fleet of 15 A330-300s. The carrier says that the used A330s will form a bridge to a future order of next generation widebodies. "We have an immediate need for widebodies to offer more lie-flat beds in business class on our flights over three hours," says Malaysia Airlines chief executive Peter Bellew. "Malaysia Airlines has done an opportunistic deal on super aircraft from a failed European carrier. Malaysia Airlines fleet strategy is a key component of the ongoing five-year 12-point MAS Recovery Plan (MRP) unveiled on 29 August 2014, which calls for the resetting of the airline’s operating business model towards a competitive cost position, with a focus on the network and revenue management. At a special briefing for the media held today, Malaysia Airlines Chairman Tan Sri Md Nor Yusof said: “The airline business is extremely complex and dynamic where there is often a mismatch between readiness and opportunity, where readiness to expand does not often coincide with appropriate and available aircraft and available customers does not automatically mean available landing rights. Airlines have to be agile in order to balance this.” In his presentation to media, Malaysia Airlines Chief Executive Officer Peter Bellew provided an indepth update on Malaysia Airlines’ fleet strategy, as well as its business performance, products and services, among others. As emphasized in its statement on 21 September 2017, Malaysia Airlines has a firm order of 25 Boeing 737 aircraft and options on other types of aircraft, including both new and used aircraft from Boeing and Airbus. Overall, this strategy will provide Malaysia Airlines with the flexibility in deciding which aircraft suits its operational environment best moving forward. In line with this, Bellew also announced that Malaysia Airlines has signed a Letter of Intent (LOI) for the lease of six (6) second hand Airbus A330-200, as replacement for six narrowbody Boeing 737 that are being returned to lessors . The A330-200 aircraft, expected to begin arriving from February 2018, will allow the airline to bridge the next generation wide-body aircraft orders. The LOI with AerCap, the lessor of the aircraft, was signed today. As per the LOI, the A330-200s will be leased for six years from 2018 to 2023 and will mainly be used to up-gauge several high-demand medium haul routes. The aircraft features are very similar to Malaysia Airlines’ current A330-300 fleet with exactly the same Pratt & Whitney engines. Malaysia Airlines is negotiating a maintenance support programme with Pratt & Whitney. The six aircraft will have a two class configuration, 287 seats with 19 fully lie flat Business Class seats, brand new IFE on all seats and WiFi. Group CEO Peter Bellew said, “As laid out in the MRP, we are working hard on bringing the airline to a competitive cost position. We also want to rebuild Malaysia Airlines so we can reassume our previous premier position in the industry. The current lease rates are incredibly competitive and we are being opportunistic by leasing them at this point.” “As I have communicated, we have an immediate need for widebodies to offer more lie flat beds in Business Class on our flights over three hours. www.ch-aviation.com Air Berlin set to axe Alitalia wet-lease As part of the ongoing rationalization of its operations, Air Berlin (AB, Berlin Tegel) will shortly discontinue a wet-lease agreement with fellow Etihad Airways equity partner Alitalia (AZ, Rome Fiumicino). At present, the bankrupt Italian carrier operates two A320-200s - EI-DSX (msn 3643) and EI-DSZ (msn 3695) - for the bankrupt German carrier on flights from Berlin Tegel to each of Budapest,Gothenburg Landvetter, Milan Linate, Munich, and Rome Fiumicino. However, according to an Air Berlin communique, this partnership will cease from September 28 onwards when the aircraft are returned to Alitalia. Under bankruptcy proceedings instituted in August of this year, Air Berlin has returned multiple aircraft to lessors amid concerns about its short-term financial buoyancy. As recently reported, Air Berlin's entire fleet of A330200s will be returned to their respective owners through October 15 when it is scheduled to end all longhaul operations. Its last Dusseldorf-Los Angeles Int'l service will operate on September 25 followed by last flights from Dusseldorf to San Francisco, CA on October 14 and New York JFK, Miami Int'l and Fort Myers Southwest Florida on October 15. Concerning its narrowbody fleet, Lufthansa Group and easyJet (U2, London Luton) have been selected as preferred bidders and are currently in talks with Air Berlin's creditors' committee. The negotiations are expected to last through to October 12 by which time a decision is expected to be made. Ahead of the deadline, the Lufthansa Supervisory Board, on Tuesday, September 26, gave its consent to the proposed acquisition of sixty-one Air Berlin aircraft for placement with its Eurowings(EW, Dusseldorf) low-cost unit. Lufthansa said in a statement the aircraft being eyed include forty-one A320 family jets as well as the twenty Dash 8-400s currently in service with LGW Luftfahrtgesellschaft Walter (HE, Dortmund). "The acquisition of the aircraft is partly dependent on the successful conclusion of negotiations to acquire parts of the Air Berlin Group," it said. "The investments would be financed from existing liquid funds." Lufthansa Group already wet-leases a total of thirty-seven aircraft from Air Berlin including five A320-200s in service for Austrian Airlines (OS, Vienna), and twenty-one A320-200s and eleven A319-100s in service for Eurowings.

In July this year, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Akbar al-Baker confirmed the Gulf-based carrier had scrapped orders with Airbus (AIB, Toulouse Blagnac) for four A350-900s citing delays in their deliveryreadiness. However, speaking at Boeing (BOE, Chicago O'Hare) during the delivery ceremony for its first B747-8(F), al-Baker told Reuters that an agreement concerning their delivery would be concluded shortly. Separately, al-Baker told CNBC news that despite being rebuffed by American Airlines (AA,Dallas/Fort Worth) earlier this year, Qatar Airways was still looking to invest in an airline in the United States.

Thus far, EgyptAir and MEA - Middle East Airlines have announced the suspension of their respective flights to Erbil from September 29 onwards while Royal Jordanian has confirmed it will suspend its Erbil and Sulaymaniyah flights from the same date. The announcement follows an Iraqi government threat to close the airspace over Kurdistan unless Kurd authorities hand over control of Erbil and Sulaymaniyah airports to the central government by Friday. The National Security Council of Iran has also announced that the country's airspace is closed to flights operating to and from Kurdistan, at the request of the Iraqi government. The Tasnim News Agency reports that the airports at Sulaymaniyah and Erbil are affected. The ban is a retaliatory measure against Kurdistan's independence referendum which was held on Monday, September 25, which secured a 92% vote in favour of secession. Reuters reports that turnout for the vote was strong, with 72% of Kurdistan's 5.2 million eligible voters casting their ballot. The referendum has drawn criticism not just from Baghdad, but also from neighbours Iran and Turkey which fear it will destabilize the region further, in Turkey especially given its own restive Kurd population. As such, Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan has even threatened to 'turn off the oil tap' in response. "After this, let's see through which channels the northern Iraqi regional government will send its oil, or where it will sell it," Erdogan said. Although the airspace has now been closed, land borders remain open. Currently, Mahan Air offers flights from Erbil to Tehran Imam Khomeini 3x weekly, while there are no direct flights from Sulaymaniyah to destinations in Iran. As of September 27, Flightradar24 ADS-B data shows AtlasGlobal, Fly Baghdad, Iraqi Airways,Pegasus Airlines, Turkish Airlines and ZagrosJet all continue to serve Erbil and Sulaymaniyah on a regular basis.

WestJet announced the name and logo for its ultra-low-cost airline. WestJet today announced the name and logo for its ultra-low-cost airline (ULCC) in Canada. Named Swoop, the ULCC will begin selling flights in early 2018. South African Airways (SAA) is progressively implementing its turnaround plan by implementing network remediation strategies. SAA has already made known its intention to introduce network enhancements which are in line with the implementation of its newly developed five-year Corporate Plan in order to improve schedule efficiencies. These plans were shared with various stakeholders in the travel industry, the shareholder and parliament. Implementation of the five-year plan seeks to return the company to financial sustainability in the shortest time possible. “There is every urgency to aggressively implement this turnaround plan in a manner that shows results in improved efficiencies and ensure schedule integrity for all our customers. We are therefore monitoring route performance and have made some capacity adjustments to align our schedule and frequency for sustainable and profitable outcomes. “Demand in Central Africa has remained at levels similar to last year due to slow economic growth in the region. Our intention therefore is to maintain our presence in these markets, and we have initiated discussions with our partners to decide on the best option to serve these markets,” says Tlali Tlali, SAA spokesperson. SAA would like to assure customers that it will honour its obligations to all ticketed passengers who purchased tickets in advance. Ticketed customers will be reaccommodated on other flights. Delta to offer free mobile messaging in flight, providing more customers access to free messaging than any other carrier From an airplane 30,000 feet in the air, a text message pops up on a smart phone on the ground. "Looks like my flight is arriving ahead of schedule," the message reads. "Should be ready for pickup 15 minutes early." Beginning Oct. 1, Delta Air Lines will become the first U.S. global carrier*to offer free mobile messaging, providing more customers access to free messaging than any other carrier. The airline will also have the most aircraft enabled with free messaging. This new, complimentary capability will enable customers to stay fully connected with those on the ground and exchange real time messages in flight with friends, families, colleagues, and clients via iMessage, WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger. The enhancement is part of Delta's multi-billion dollar investment in the customer experience. "We know many of Delta's customers want or need to stay connected in the air and on the ground, which is why we're investing in an easy, free way to send and receive messages inflight through some of the most popular global platforms," said Tim Mapes, Delta's Senior Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer. "Coupled with our investments in seat-back screens, free entertainment and High-Speed Wi-Fi, free messaging is one more way customers can choose how to make the most of their time on Delta flights." Delta's High-Speed Wi-Fi, powered by Gogo's 2Ku Wi-Fi technology, is delivering next-generation technology that provides consistent, uninterrupted coverage anywhere in the world, including over oceans. Delta has the largest current fleet of Gogo 2Ku aircraft and the largest commitment to 2Ku of any airline in the world. Over the next two years, Delta is set to install over 600 aircraft with High-Speed Wi-Fi for domestic and international flights. The airline's High-Speed 2Ku Wi-Fi gives customers an at-home experience in flight, including the ability to stream video and use work-related networks, such as VPN, globally. Unlike prior versions of in-flight technology on Delta, customers may now use Wi-Fi from gate to gate on 2Ku-enabled aircraft. To date, the airline has installed 200 aircraft with the improved Wi-Fi technology. Additionally, Delta offers customers more aircraft with seatback entertainment than any airline in the world, installing its 500th aircraft with seat-back entertainment in July. With a commitment to install over 600 aircraft with seat-back screens by the end of 2018, in partnership with Panasonic, Delta is putting choice in the hands of the customer.
