The point at which China will displace the United States as the world’s largest aviation market has moved two years closer since last year’s forecast, according to the report. “We now anticipate this will occur around 2022, through a combination of slightly faster Chinese growth and slightly reduced growth in the US. The UK will fall to fifth place, surpassed by India in 2025, and Indonesia in 2030. Thailand and Turkey will enter the top ten largest markets, while France and Italy will fall in the rankings to 11th and 12th respectively,” de Juniac said. Maximising the potential benefits of aviation growth will depend on current levels of trade liberalisation and visa facilitation being maintained. If trade protectionism and travel restrictions are put in place, the benefits of air connectivity will decline as growth could slow to 2.7 per cent, meaning 1.1 billion fewer passenger journeys annually in 2036, the report said. Conversely, if moves towards liberalisation increase, annual growth could be more than two percentage points faster, leading to a tripling in passengers over the next 20 years. The report also said planning for growth will require partnerships to be strengthened between the aviation industry, communities and governments to expand and modernise infrastructure.

Boeing’s stock, up 70 per cent this year, dipped less than 1 per cent to $264 in premarket trading after it published the third quarter results. The world’s biggest maker of jetliners said third-quarter core operating margin rose to 9.8 per cent in the third quarter ended September 30, from 9.2 per cent a year earlier. The company added, however, that the improvement in margins was partially offset by the charge on the KC-46 aerial refuelling tanker, which it split between its commercial airlines and defence units. The costs of the troubled tanker programme had already weighed on Boeing results earlier this year and Chief Financial Officer Greg Smith said then that the cost would not recur in future quarters. Boeing raised its operating cash flow forecast for the full year to about $12.5 billion from its previous forecast of $12.25 billion. It also increased its 2017 core earnings per share forecast to $9.90$10.10, from $9.80-$10.00, previously. Revenue rose to $24.31 billion in the third quarter ended September 30 from $23.90 billion. Core earnings were $2.72 per share, compared with $3.51 per share a year ago when it included a tax gain.

Flydubai launches new service to Moscow’s Sheremetyevo International Airport
Flydubai on Wednesday announced the start of its new daily flights to Moscow’s Sheremetyevo International Airport (SVO) starting November 29, 2017. The move will increase the Dubai-based airline’s frequency to the Russian capital to double daily with the existing service to Vnukovo International Airport (VKO). Flydubai started operating to Moscow in 2014 and has grown its network in Russia to 11 unique points, with Makhachkala, Ufa and Voronezh being the latest additions with operations commencing in October 2017, it said in a statement. Along with these newest points on flydubai’s network the airline operates direct flights to Kazan, Krasnodar, Mineralnye Vody, Moscow (VKO), Rostov-on-Don, Samara and Yekaterinburg.

Berlin: German carrier Lufthansa gave a more upbeat assessment of revenue trends through the end of the year, with the carrier benefiting from solid passenger demand and poised to swoop on struggling rivals. While this summer has seen Air Berlin and Monarch collapse due to tough competition, Europe’s major carriers have enjoyed strong demand and improving price trends. However, despite posting record nine-month results on Wednesday, Lufthansa stuck to its profit target for the year to earn more than the 2016 total of 1.75 billion euros ($2.1 billion, Dh7.56 billion). Lufthansa said it expected unit revenue, a measure of pricing, to rise slightly in the fourth quarter after a 4.5 per cent increase in the third quarter. It previously predicted a drop in unit revenue for the second half. Analysts on average expect Lufthansa to report 2017 adjusted earnings before interest and tax (EBIT) of 2.6 billion euros. Its shares, which have more than doubled this year to highs last seen in 2001, were indicated down 3.4 per cent. Lufthansa’s third-quarter adjusted EBIT rose 32 per cent to 1.518 billion euros, slightly ahead of a Reuters poll forecast for 1.502 billion. Lufthansa CEO Carsten Spohr said the result “gives us the investment and growth capabilities we need to play an active part in the consolidation of the European airline market, and to continue to invest in the future of our company”. Lufthansa has agreed a deal to buy large parts of insolvent local rival Air Berlin and has submitted an offer for some of struggling carrier Alitalia’s operations.

The first of the announced new destinations is to Maldives -between Paris Charles de Gaulle (CDG) and Male (MLE) and would be operated twice a week with a B777-200. The other service would be from Amsterdam Airport Schiphol (AMS) to San Jose (SJO) -Costa Rica twice weekly with a B787 Dreamliner, to Port Louis (MRU) in Mauritius thrice weekly with a B787 Dreamliner and to Mumbai (BOM) in India thrice weekly with a B787 Dreamliner. With the modern fleet of long-haul passenger aircraft and full freighters (178 aircraft), the group is able to offer vast capacity from its two hubs Charles de Gaulle and Schiphol, with around 1,023 weekly services to 123 unique destinations across the global network. “We are committed to expanding our network each season with attractive new opportunities. Cathay Pacific obtains IATA CEIV Pharma Certification October 26, 2017: Hong Kong head-quartered Cathay Pacific has been awarded IATA CEIV Pharma Certification, a globally-recognised pharmaceutical product handling accreditation. Cathay Pacific has become the first airline in Hong Kong to obtain CEIV Certification.
