www.flightglobal.com IATA targets Asia's infrastructure, regulation and environment IATA chief Alexandre de Juniac has called on Asian governments to invest further in aeronautical infrastructure, harmonise regulation and join in the industry’s efforts to improve its sustainability. ―The 34 million jobs and $700 billion of economic activity supported by aviation across the Asia-Pacific region are expected to more than double in the next 20 years,‖ he told attendees at the Association of Asia Pacific Airlines Assembly of Presidents in Taipei. ―But the realisation of these economic benefits is at risk if the region does not address the big longterm challenges of sustainability, infrastructure and regulatory harmonization.‖ He warned that an ―infrastructure crisis‖ was looming in the region, with airports in Bangkok, Manila and Jakarta requiring major upgrades, Chinese air traffic management struggling to manage strong growth, and high costs at India’s privatised airports. De Juniac also warned against further using private capital and control to plug those infrastructure gaps, as the shareholder returns required of private investors could lead to cost increases, while regulation of airport charges ―has yet to produce any long-term success stories in balancing national and private interests.‖ He also called for greater co-operation between countries on regulation and implementing global standards on consumer protection, accident investigation and security measures. ―The goal is to improve efficiency with seamless operations across the region. And to do that governments must focus on harmonization and work together in partnership with industry,‖ says de Juniac. Lastly, he called on governments in the region to work with industry on emissions reduction efforts through the Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation (CORSIA) and sustainable aviation fuel initiatives. Under CORSIA, airlines will start to report their emissions in just over 14 months, and IATA is urging all airlines to have their teams and processes ready, while also appealing to governments in Asia Pacific to join the voluntary period from 2021 to 2026.

http://www.iata.org/ IATA and ACI Launch New Experience in Travel and Technologies (NEXTT) Barcelona – The International Air Transport Association (IATA) in collaboration with Airports Council International (ACI) have launched the New Experience in Travel and Technologies (NEXTT) initiative. In light of the projected doubling of air travel demand by 2036, new on-ground concepts are, and increasingly will be required to optimize the use of emerging technologies, processes and design developments. NEXTT aims to help deliver this future by developing a common vision to enhance the on-ground transport experience, guide industry investments and help governments improve the regulatory framework. ―We will not be able to handle the growth or evolving customer expectations with our current processes, installations and ways of doing business. And accommodating growth with ever bigger airports will be increasingly difficult if not impossible. NEXTT will address these challenges. Working with our airport partners we will explore the important changes in technology and processes to enhance the customer experience. And we will ask some fundamental questions about what really needs to happen at the airport and what can be done off-site,‖ said Alexandre de Juniac, IATA’s Director General and CEO. ―NEXTT will seek to provide a seamless journey by exploring increased off-site processing options; reducing or even eliminating queues; more efficiently using space and resources through enhanced deployments of artificial intelligence and robotics; and vastly improving data sharing between stakeholders. The goal of NEXTT is finding potential ways to integrate systems and improve operations in the most secure, effective and sustainable manner for the benefit of passengers and the industry,‖ said Angela Gittens, Director General, ACI World. Specifically, NEXTT will investigate how passengers, cargo, baggage and aircraft move through the complete travel journey with a focus on change in three areas: Off-airport activities: NEXTT will explore the possibilities of transferring on-site processes off-site, such as security processing and baggage check and drop-off, to streamline the airport experience. Advanced processing technology: NEXTT will investigate how advance processing technology, such as tracking and identification technology, automation and robotics can improve safety, security, the customer experience and operational efficiency. Interactive decision-making: NEXTT will promote the better use of data, predictive modelling and artificial intelligence to facilitate real-time decision-making, a key element in improving the passenger experience and optimizing operational efficiency. IATA and ACI will work with their respective members, and other associations, service providers, engineering firms and manufacturers. Through the collaborative approach NEXTT aims to align the visions for the future passenger and cargo journey. A number of key airports including Amsterdam Airport Schiphol (AMS), Bangalore International Airport (BLR), Dubai International (DXB), Heathrow Airport (LHR) and Shenzhen Airport (Group) Co., Ltd. (SZX) are already actively involved in a number of projects which explore NEXTT concepts.

Passengers want technology to give them more control over their travel experience Barcelona – The International Air Transport Association (IATA) announced the results of its 2017 Global Passenger Survey (GPS) which revealed that passengers expect technology to give them more personal control over their travel experience. Based on 10,675 responses from around the globe, the survey provided insight into what passengers want from their air travel experience. Topping the list were: Automation of more airport processes A single identity token for all travel processes using biometric identification Real-time information sent directly to personal devices More efficient security - without having to remove or unpack personal items More seamless border control Ready to go digital Digital travel processes are the expectation and passengers want more. The GPS found that 82% of travelers would like to be able to use a digital passport on their smartphones for as many travel activities as possible, from booking flights to passing through the airport. Biometric identification systems were the technology of choice with 64% favoring biometric identifiers as their preferred travel token. "Passengers want to use one single biometric identity token for all their travel transactions from booking flights to passing security and border control and picking up their bags. IATA's One ID project is rapidly moving travel towards a day when a face, iris, or fingerprint will provide the key to a seamless travel experience. The technology exists. Its use in aviation needs to be accelerated. Governments need to take the lead by working with industry to establish a trusted framework and agreeing the global standards and security protocols needed to use the technology. One ID will not only make process more efficient for passengers but allow governments to utilize valuable resources more effectively" said Nick Careen, IATA's Senior Vice President for Airport, Passenger, Cargo and Security.

Passenger in control Passengers want to be able to do more of the airport processes themselves by taking advantage of the latest digital self-service options. Baggage was the top activity that passengers wanted more control over. The GPS found that 68% of those surveyed want to self-tag their bags with electronic bag-tags being the preferred option. In addition 48% of passengers wanted to self-drop their bag. The survey found that the number of passengers using automated immigration gates and kiosks increased by 6% in 2017, reaching 58% with a satisfaction rate of 90%. Boarding the aircraft was another area in which passengers wanted to have more control with 72% of passengers preferring to self-board, an increase of 2% over 2016. "Passengers have never been as empowered as they are today. Selfservice solutions range from mobile check-in and bag drop, to selfboarding and automated border control. Smartphone- and tablet-toting, passengers want to use these mobile devices to control their travel experience. They expect easy access to the information they want, exactly when they need it in the travel process. Airlines and airports that make the most use of technological innovations will be giving a better travel experience to their customers," said Pierre Charbonneau, IATA's Director Passenger and Facilitation. Well-informed passengers Passengers want airlines and airports to keep them informed throughout their journey. The survey found that 85% of passengers want to be able to check the status of their flight and 50% want to track their bag throughout the trip. Passengers also wanted more information to help then plan their passage through the airport with 51% wanting to know wait times at security and border control and 58% wanting to know wait times at arrival customs, a 17% increase on 2016. Providing more real-time information was also identified by 63% of passengers as the key to improving their experience during travel disruptions. SMS messaging remains the preferred option for receiving travel notifications. However this trend is reversing with 28% of passenger preferring communication through smartphone apps and 26% through email.

"Passengers expect to get up-to-date information on all aspects of their journey with minimum effort, through their preferred channel. Offering this level of personalization is reliant on capturing, managing and understanding passenger data. But no single member of the travel ecosystem has the capability to optimize the end-to-end journey on their own. A global coordination framework is needed on how passenger data is shared, controlled and protected. The IATA personalization program aims to provide customers with trusted, accurate real-time information from all travel service providers throughout their journey," said Charbonneau. Passenger pain points Passengers once again identified airport security and border control processes as two of their biggest pain points when travelling. The top frustrations were the intrusiveness of having to remove personal items (60%), the inconvenience of having to unpack electronic devices in carry-on bags (52%) and the variation in security screening procedures at different airports (47%). To make security and border control areas as safe, effective and hassle-free as possible for passengers, the industry needs to embrace new Smart Security technology. Bring your own device The GPS found that 42% of passengers, would prefer to use their own devicesBring Your Own Device (BYOD) - to access inflight entertainment options. Greater connectivity promises to be a win for both the carriers and the passengers they carry. "The importance of smartphone technology, the demand for more automation and personalization throughout the travel process and desire to stay connected is not new to aviation, however the GPS highlights the extent of the opportunities on offer and the need for airlines and airports and to invest significantly in this area. To satisfy travelers, airports and airlines will need to work together to provide passengers with easy-to-use mobile services, selfservice options and one-stop security checks to make sure they meet this demand. But industry can't achieve this alone. Government support is essential to change antiquated regulations before the industry can fully transform," said Careen. The latest IATA Global Passenger Survey (GPS) analyzed the comments from passengers from more than 152 countries across all regions in the world

2036 Forecast Reveals Air Passengers Will Nearly Double to 7.8 Billion Geneva - The International Air Transport Association (IATA) expects 7.8 billion passengers to travel in 2036, a near doubling of the 4 billion air travelers expected to fly this year. The prediction is based on a 3.6% average Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) noted in the release of the latest update to the association’s 20-Year Air Passenger Forecast. ―All indicators lead to growing demand for global connectivity. The world needs to prepare for a doubling of passengers in the next 20 years. It’s fantastic news for innovation and prosperity, which is driven by air links. It is also a huge challenge for governments and industry to ensure we can successfully meet this essential demand,‖ said Alexandre de Juniac, IATA’s Director General and CEO. Eastward shift, developing market focus The biggest driver of demand will be the Asia-Pacific region. The region will be the source of more than half the new passengers over the next two decades. The point at which China will displace the United States as the world’s largest aviation market (defined as traffic to, from and within the country( has moved two years closer since last year’s forecast. We now anticipate this will occur around 2022, through a combination of slightly faster Chinese growth and slightly reduced growth in the US. The UK will fall to fifth place, surpassed by India in 2025, and Indonesia in 2030. Thailand and Turkey will enter the top ten largest markets, while France and Italy will fall in the rankings to 11th and 12th respectively.

Risks, opportunities and sustainability A number of risks to the forecast have been identified. Maximizing the potential benefits of aviation growth will depend on current levels of trade liberalization and visa facilitation being maintained. If trade protectionism and travel restrictions are put in place, the benefits of air connectivity will decline as growth could slow to 2.7%, meaning 1.1 billion fewer passenger journeys annually in 2036. Conversely, if moves towards liberalization increase, annual growth could be more than two percentage points faster, leading to a tripling in passengers over the next 20 years.

Planning for growth will require partnerships to be strengthened between the aviation industry, communities and governments to expand and modernize infrastructure. Runways, terminals, and ground access to airports will come under increasing strain. Innovative solutions to these challenges, as well as to the baggage and security processes, cargo handling, and other activities, will also be needed. And air traffic management needs urgent reform to cut delays, costs and emissions. "Increasing demand will bring a significant infrastructure challenge. The solution does not lie in more complex processes or building bigger and bigger airports but in harnessing the power of new technology to move activity off-airport, streamline processes and improve efficiency. Through partnerships within the industry and beyond, we are confident that sustainable solutions for continued growth can be found," said de Juniac. The aviation industry has adopted a robust strategy to reduce its environmental impacts, particularly its carbon emissions. "No industry has done more to meet its environmental obligations than aviation. Our tough targets to achieve carbon-neutral growth from 2020 and to cut our CO2 emissions to half-2005 levels by 2050 are backed by a comprehensive strategy. Our immediate aims are to work with governments to increase the production of sustainable aviation fuels, and to deliver air traffic management efficiencies, which promise significant emissions savings. And from 2020, a Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation (CORSIA) will play a major role in meeting our carbon-neutral target," said de Juniac

www.ch-aviation.com Air Berlin's Leisure Cargo bought by Zeitfracht Group Air Berlin (AB, Berlin Tegel) has announced that its subsidiary Leisure Cargo will be acquired by the German logistics company Berliner Zeitfracht Group. Zeitfracht's Managing Director Wolfram Simon has said negotiations for acquiring the airline's airberlin technik MRO business are ongoing, and should be completed soon.
"Our approach to strategically integrate the airberlin subsidiary Leisure Cargo into our freight business is an important step for the future success of the Zeitfracht Group," Simon said in a statement. "We look forward to taking this step together with the dedicated employees of Leisure Cargo." Air Berlin is in the hands of administrators following its collapse in August. Parts of its business have already been sold off to Lufthansa (LH, Frankfurt Int'l) (pending European Commission approval), including LGW - Luftfahrtgesellschaft Walter (HE, Dortmund) and Niki (HG, Vienna), as well as twenty other aircraft to be transferred to Eurowings (EW, Dusseldorf). A deal between the Air Berlin administrators and easyJet (U2, London Luton) to transfer up to 25 A320 family aircraft for the latter's plan to launch operations from Berlin Tegel has apparently not yet been reached given no announcement has been made following the end of a period of exclusive talks last Friday. Reuters reports that a source "familiar with the matter" would have confirmed that the administrators are now negotiating with both Condor (DE, Frankfurt Int'l) and easyJet in parallel regarding the sale of some remaining Air Berlin assets

www.ch-aviation.com Air Algérie cops $12m fine in construction dispute Air Algérie (AH, Algiers) has been ordered by the International Chamber of Commerce's (ICC) arbitration tribunal to pay a CAD15 million (USD12 million) fine to Canada's SM International in a dispute over the construction of the airline's new headquarters, reports TSA Algérie. The national carrier had commissioned the Canadian engineering firm in 2011 to build its new HQ at Bab Ezzouar in the city of Algiers. The contract was worth DZD9 billion (USD78 million), but was cancelled by Air Algérie in 2013, with the airline citing "nonexecution and non-completion of works in time." The Canadian company then filed with the ICC, accusing Air Algérie of noncompliance with the contract. The dispute has been in court ever since, and on August 31 the ICC ordered the airline to pay DZD1.5 billion (USD13 million) to SM within a month. Former Air Algérie CEO, Mohamed Salah Boultif, who was in charge when the initial contract was cancelled in 2013, has defended his actions. In a letter published in Le Soir d'Algérie, Boultif says that the amount of the fine represents a bank guarantee obtained by SM International to secure the contract, and is not a 'conviction' against the airline. The airline has said that Canadian flights will operate as usual. Its Algiers to Montréal Trudeau flight operates 4x weekly aboard A330-200 equipment. Air Algérie operates to 73 destinations in 28 countries, primarily throughout Africa, but also to destinations in Europe and China. The 56-strong fleet includes eight A330-200s, twelve ATR72-500s, three ATR72-600s, five B737-600s, two B737-700(C)s, twentyfive B737-800s and three B767-300s

www.ainonline.com Boeing Stages Launch of 777X Production With a whir and a rat-a-tat-tat, a blue-and-orange robot kicked off production of Boeing’s 777X at the company’s Everett, Washington plant on Monday. The laser-guided machine, made by supplier MTorres, drilled a hole in a carbon-fiber wing spar, then drove in a fastener. A handful of employees guided the robotic arm, one of many ways the aerospace giant is radically changing its manufacturing process with the 777X. ―This is a change in the history of how we manufacture, how we assemble and how we fly our aircraft,‖ 777/777X operations vice president Jason Clark told a couple hundred employees and journalists on hand for the start of production. The shift in production methods boosts safety and quality, Clark said. ―As we transition forward, more toward a production system that’s more automotive styled or based, we really want to focus on those things that are going to get our mechanics into the operating mode versus the actual drilling and filling,‖ which can take a physical toll on workers. Clark declined to say how much Boeing expects to cut production costs with the increased automation. ―The targeted automation is for those areas where it makes the most sense,‖ he said. Of the four stations in the spar assembly building, only the first, where the MTorres robot sits, is fully automated. Boeing produces the 105-foot-long spars nearby in its $1 billion composite wing center (CWC), where automated fiber placement robots also create stringers and skin panels. The building can support a production rate of 8.3 aircraft a month, said Perry Moore, who heads the 777X wing integrated product team. Production remains on schedule, and so far, the program team has had to make few design changes, 777X chief project engineer and vice president Terry Beezhold said. Schedules call for the start of final assembly next year, followed by flight tests in 2019 and delivery in 2020, he added. Dubai’s Emirates Airline plans to take delivery of the first airplane, leapfrogging launch customer Lufthansa. The Dubai-based airline’s order for 150 777Xs dominates the airplane’s backlog, which stands at 340 firm orders. Qatar Airways has ordered 60 of the long-haul jets, and Etihad has ordered 25. The Gulf carriers make up 69 percent of the 777X’s order book. However, the ―Big Three‖ Gulf carriers have hit some turbulence, which could threaten existing widebody orders at Airbus and Boeing. Profits at Emirates dramatically dropped, and the airline could find itself with more seats than it can fill. Etihad Airways has struggled with financial problems, made worse by bad investments in Alitalia Airlines and AirBerlin. Qatar Airways faces a regional blockade that has hurt its passenger business. Middle East airlines plan to boost capacity by about 8 percent per year over the next five years, largely by adding widebody airplanes, according to an analysis by Canaccord Genuity. ―While traffic currently supports the planned fleet expansions, considering the significant exposure to the Boeing 777 (including the 777X) as well as the A350 and the A380, any slowdown in the traffic in this region would have an outsize impact on the delivery schedules at both Airbus and Boeing, in our view,‖ Canaccord analyst Ken Herbert wrote in the report released in September. Given the Gulf carriers’ emphasis on range and comfort, the 777X appears a natural fit for their fleets, which already include dozens of classic 777s. The 777X encompasses two models: the 777-8, which can carry 350 seats and fly to a range of more than 9,300 nautical miles; and the 777-9, which will carry about 400 seats and fly to a range of more than 8,200 miles. Boeing specifications show the aircraft will operate 20 percent more efficiently on a seat-mile basis than the current-generation 777s.

www.ainonline.com GTF Engine Pains Subside in IndiGo A320neos Indian low-fare airline IndiGo, the first A320neo operator in Asia, has reduced its aircraft on ground (AOG) to two machines following operational disruptions involving the airplanes’ Pratt& Whitney PW11000G geared turbofans since early last year. In India, the number of airframes awaiting spare engines has fallen from 15 to three—two with IndiGo and one with GoAir. With 430 A320neos on order, IndiGo has yet to make a decision on the engine choice for a second tranche of 280 airplanes. However, with increases in fuel prices and the competitive environment in India, IndiGo might choose to operate the Pratt-powered airplanes for a longer period than its usual limit of six years, said IndiGo president Aditya Ghosh during a July conference call to discuss quarterly earnings. Ghosh cited a 15-percent lower fuel burn and ―a much lower risk of technological obsolescence‖ in the PW1100G as factors in his decision. Around 40 percent of the world’s geared turbofanpowered A320neos operate from India. Early adoptors have seen the benefit of lower fuel burn, but they’ve also witnessed entry pains involving an air system fault, extended engine start times and delivery delays due to fan blade production problems. In IndiGo’s case, the trouble with the Pratt engines ―related to the premature degradation of the combustor chamber lining and the premature wear of the Number 3 bearing seal,‖ said Ghosh in July. While the now-solved oil seal problem involved the global fleet, combustor lining degradation is an issue specific to India and Middle East, where particulates in the air also affected thePW1100G’s predecessor, the IAE V2500. Pratt & Whitney has defined corrective actions for the combustor. The company introduced modifications first in mid-2016 and expects to introduce more into new production and overhauled engines starting at the end of the year.
