UK airport strike called off Threats of a two-day strike by UK airport workers that would have potentially disrupted passengers heading off for Christmas holidays have been eased. A new pay offer for the 1,500 baggage handlers, check-in staff and cargo personnel, who work at 18 UK airports, is to be put to a vote in the next few days. The move follows talks with their employer Swissport Dec.20 at the UK industrial arbitration service, Acas. The staff, members of the Unite union, had been due to strike for 48 hours on Dec. 23 and 24. Swissport describes itself as the aviation industry‟s largest provider of ground and cargo handling services. Unite officials said the talks had resulted in a breakthrough on pay and conditions. They said many of their members were paid only fractionally above the UK‟s national minimum wage of £7.20 ($8.90) an hour. “That the strike is called off is obviously good news for Unite members and very welcome news for passengers,” Unite general secretary Len McCluskey said. “No worker likes taking strike action but often the threat of it is the only way to make headway in very frustrating circumstances. We now take this offer back to the members for their consideration.” A single line on Swissport‟s website said: „The planned industrial action on 23rd and 24th December has been suspended.‟

http://m.gulfnews.com/ Boeing airplane unit to cut more jobs in 2017, shares rise US airline struggling to sell planes in the face of a strong dollar Seattle: Boeing Co’s commercial airplane unit said on Monday it would cut an as-yet-undetermined number of jobs in 2017 after slashing its workforce by 8 per cent in 2016, as it struggles to sell planes in the face of a strong dollar. Chicago-based Boeing and European rival Airbus are battling especially slow demand for their lucrative, longrange twin-aisle jetliners, such as the Boeing 777 and Airbus A330, in a global climate of political and economic uncertainty. Boeing said last week that it would cut 777 production to five a month in August 2017, a 40 per cent reduction from the current rate of 8.3 a month, because of slow sales. The company did not say how many jobs it will cut next year, noting it is still assessing its 2017 budget and employment needs.

http://m.chron.com/ Delta Air Lines changes policy after black doctor's complaint goes viral Two months after a black Houston doctor's Facebook post alleged mistreatment by a Delta Air Lines crew member, the company has announced a change in policy, according to a report. In October, Dr. Tamika Cross told the Chronicle she was rebuffed by a flight attendant after Cross tried to help a passenger who fell ill on a flight from Detroit to Houston. She complained that a crew member refused to believe a young, black woman could be a doctor. "I raised my hand to get her (the flight attendant's) attention," she said. According to Cross, the airline worker dismissed her. Autoplay: On | Off " 'Oh no, sweetie. Put your hand down. We are looking for actual physicians or nurses. We don't have time to talk to you,' " Cross recalled the flight attendant telling her. A LOOK BACK: Doctor accusing airline of racial bias speaks out after viral post The flight attendant demanded proof, Cross said, but Cross left her hospital identity badge in Houston because she didn't think she would need it in Michigan. Cross documented her experience on Facebook, drawing thousands of comments by other young, black professionals who said they have also faced the same kind of discrimination.

‫صورة أرشيفية‬

http://m.chron.com/ However, as of Dec. 1, Delta stopped requiring medical professionals to provide credentials before helping in a medical emergency, the Washington Post reported. On its website Monday, Delta posted a statement explaining the change in policy: When situations like the one described by Dr. Cross arise, we have a responsibility to our employees and our customers to review the circumstances and our policies for opportunities to listen, learn and improve." The statement said Cross met with Delta officials to discuss the October incident. "Our flight attendants were following standard procedure during this incident and the feedback Dr. Cross provided gave us a chance to make flying better," Allison Ausband, senior vice president – In-flight service, said in the statement. "We remain grateful to the medical professionals who are willing to assist us in an emergency at 30,000 feet." Cross is pleased with the change, Delta said. "It is reassuring to know that Delta has taken this matter very seriously and made the necessary adjustments to help physicians and other medical personnel, no matter who they may be, feel more comfortable offering medical assistance during in-flight emergencies," Cross said, according to the statement. http://www.anna.aero/ russels Airlines set to become part of Eurowings empire by 2018; can a hub-and-spoke carrier fit into the Eurowings point-to-point model? Revealing some of the future plans for Brussels Airlines as a fully-owned subsidiary of the Lufthansa Group on 15 December in Brussels were: Bernard Gustin, CEO, Brussels Airline; Viscount Etienne Davignon, Chairman of the Board of SN Airholding; Carsten Spohr, Chairman of the Board and CEO of the Deutsche Lufthansa AG; Karl Ulrich Garnadt, CEO, Eurowings; and Geert Sciot, VP External Communications, Brussels Airlines. The announcement last week that Brussels Airlines would be fully integrated into the Lufthansa Group and join the Eurowings Group raises some interesting questions about the airline‟s future network strategy. According to OAG schedule data for 2016, Brussels Airlines accounts for 36% of seats and 39% of flights from its home base in Brussels, with the next biggest carriers being Ryanair (9.9% of seats), Jetairfly (5.9%), Lufthansa (4.6%), easyJet (3.5%) and Vueling (2.9%). Brussels Airlines‟ fleet comprises over 40 narrow-body aircraft (mostly a mix of A319s, A320s and Avro RJs) and nine long-haul A330s. The airline‟s network covers almost 80 destinations in Europe and 23 long-haul destinations in Africa and North America. The airline‟s network strength is its range of destinations in sub-Saharan Africa. Analysis of the airline‟s ASKs (Available Seat Kilometres) on routes from Brussels in 2016 reveals

‫صورة أرشيفية‬

http://www.anna.aero/ that fully 35% of ASKs are accounted for by African routes, while 47% of ASKs are on routes within Europe. Therefore 82% of ASKs are allocated to African and European routes. A comparison with the four biggest hub carriers in Northern Europe reveals that they allocate less than 30% of their ASKs across these two markets; 26% for Lufthansa in Frankfurt, 28% for British Airways at London Heathrow, 29% for KLM at Amsterdam and 30% for Air France at Paris CDG

However, while over one third of Brussels Airlines‟s ASKs are on African routes, all four of the other carriers in the table above offer more ASKs from their hubs to African destinations, with Air France offering almost four times as many ASKs in 2016. In terms of total network ASKs Brussels Airlines is only around one-eighth the size of Air France, British Airways and Lufthansa and about one-sixth the size of KLM in nearby Amsterdam (just 160 kilometres from Brussels).

‫صورة أرشيفية‬

http://www.anna.aero/ Nine of top 15 Brussels Airlines routes by ASKs are in Africa As measured by ASKs (which is a much better proxy for revenue than just seats) the airline‟s top 20 routes are dominated by routes to North America and Africa. The two US routes to New York JFK and Washington Dulles just beat off the biggest African routes (shown in bright green). Nine of the top 15 routes are to Africa, with Malaga the only European airport in the top 10.

‫صورة أرشيفية‬

http://www.anna.aero/ When asked by anna.aero the airline confirmed that overall some 40% of its passengers are connecting through Brussels with the figure higher for long-haul routes. These connecting passengers are obviously critical for the viability of these African routes, but is this model compatible with how Lufthansa sees the evolution of the airline? In the airline‟s press release covering the recent announcement, Carsten Spohr, Chairman of the Board and CEO of the Deutsche Lufthansa AG is quoted as saying: “Based on its successful development, Brussels Airlines is able to play a leading role in bringing our pan-European point-to-point offer under the brand of the Eurowings Group to new successful heights.” The key phrase there is “point-to-point” which is definitely not the current Brussels Airlines business model. Air France and Turkish Airlines are biggest threat on African routes Many of the African destinations served by Brussels Airlines are served either with an intermediate stop in both directions or as part of a triangle routing (meaning that either the outbound or return flight will have an intermediate stop). The following table looks at the African destinations which have non-stop service to Brussels with Brussels Airlines this summer and reveals which other European carriers connected these African airports with their own bases using non-stop flights and with what frequencies.

‫صورة أرشيفية‬

http://www.anna.aero/ Brussels Airlines faces considerable competition on most of these routes from other European hub carriers, notably Air France and Turkish Airlines

On European routes competition has increased in recent years with Ryanair and Vueling both opening bases in Brussels, Ryanair in February 2014 and Vueling in May 2014. Both carriers compete with Brussels Airlines on routes to Alicante, Barcelona, Ibiza, Lisbon, Malaga and Porto. In addition easyJet competes with Brussels Airlines on routes to Basel, Bordeaux, Geneva, Milan Malpensa, Naples and Nice.

http://www.anna.aero/ Passenger numbers up 6% since May The terrorist attack at Brussels Airport on 22 March had a significant impact on passenger numbers at Brussels Airlines in both March and April, but impressively year-on-year traffic was growing once again in May. Since then scheduled passenger numbers have grown by just under 6%, suggesting that for the year as a whole the airline is on track to carry some 7.7 million passengers, a new record, despite the setbacks of earlier in the year. In July, August and September passenger load factors exceeded 80%, though the average for the year as a whole is set to be around 75%. Looking further ahead Brussels Airlines has already announced plans to start year-round services next year to Funchalon the Portuguese island of Madeira, Mumbai in India and Yerevan in Armenia. New seasonal services will also be launched to Comiso in Italy, Palma de Mallorca in Spain and Rhodes in Greece.

http://mobile.reuters.com/ American Airlines wins $15 million in antitrust case against Sabre American Airlines Group Inc (AAL.O) on Tuesday won about $15.3 million in an antitrust lawsuit that accused airline booking service Sabre Corp (SABR.O) of harming competition and charging grossly inflated booking fees. The Manhattan federal jury awarded nearly $5.1 million, a fraction of the up to $73 million American Airlines was seeking at trial. But the sum automatically will be tripled under federal antitrust law. American Airlines was suing under the name of US Airways, the carrier it merged with in 2013. US Airways had filed the lawsuit in 2011. American Airlines welcomed the verdict, saying it hoped the jury's finding that Sabre had violated federal antritrust law in a 2011 contract with US Airways could result in changes in how the airline's services are sold. The jury rejected a separate claim that Sabre conspired with its competitors to not compete with each other. ADVERTISEMENT Sabre said in a statement that it continued to believe it had operated "fairly and lawfully." The company said it would seek to have the verdict set aside and, if unsuccessful, pursue an appeal. Following the verdict, Sabre shares closed at $25.15, down 35 cents, or 1.4 percent, on Nasdaq. .

‫صورة أرشيفية‬

http://mobile.reuters.com/

The case concerned fees that Sabre and other travel reservation systems collect from airlines to display flights for booking. At trial, Chuck Diamond, a lawyer for American Airlines, contended that Sabre used its power in the industry to "bully" airlines into paying unfair fees and signing unfair contracts that suppress competition and maintain its position. The lawsuit claimed that provisions of a 2011 contract between US Airways and Sabre, including those governing what fares the airline makes available to a computerized network by Sabre used by travel agents, harmed competition. The airline also contended that Sabre conspired with its competitors to not compete with each other for airline content like flight and fare information at the expense of consumers and innovation. Sabre denied conspiring with competitors, and said its contract with US Airways benefited competition. Chris Lind, a lawyer for Sabre, told jurors US Airways was far from powerless as it could leave the network, causing agents to stop using it. The case is US Airways Inc v. Sabre Holdings Corp et al, U.S. District Court, Southern District of New York, No. 11-cv2725
