Ethiopian and ASKY Airlines assures agencies of its support By Morkporkpor Anku, GNA Accra, Oct. 16, GNA – The Ethiopian Airlines in collaboration ASKY Airlines on Monday assured its traveling and tour agencies of its support in promoting the airline business. Mr Abdul-Rahaman Mohammed, the Sales Manager, Ethiopian Airlines commended the agencies for their support to promote the interest of the airlines at a workshop in Accra. He said Ethiopian Airlines being the largest airlines in Africa, over the past seven decades has been the pioneer of the African Aviation as an aircraft technology leader. The workshop was to deliberate on how to minimize the wastage of the Global Distribution Systems (GDSs), introduce the Airlines new products and services and communicate the relationship between the two airlines. It is also to foster the continuous relationship between the agencies and the airlines. Mr Abdul-Rahaman said: “We currently have an Airline inventory of 92 fleets currently in service and 59 with an average age of five years, the youngest in Africa”. He said Ethiopian Airlines as the trailblazer of African Aviation industry have the largest Aviation Academy in African which offers standard professional training for pilots, aircraft technicians, cabin attendants and ground service staff. He said the Airlines has joined forces with the worldwide hospitals and has established a new product by name „Medical Travel,‟ which connects patients with renowned and specialized hospitals abroad

ASKY is the pan-African airline that was created by regional institutions: the Bank for Investment and Development, the West African Development Bank and the ECOBANK Group. He said the Airline in 2008 in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia signed a strategic partnership with Ethiopian Airlines through a Memorandum of Understanding. He said the Airline would resume its flight operations to and from West African cities of Monrovia, Freetown and Banjul from November 1, 2017. “ASKY is a commercial company under private law and managed by experienced professionals from Africa,” he added. According to him, the Pan African airline currently operates a fleet of eight New Generation aircrafts, four Dash Q-400, one Boeing 737 – 800, and three Boeing 737-700. “ASKY now serves 19 cities in 17 countries on the African continent,” he said. Some of the destinations are Abidjan, Abuja, Cotonou, Lagos, Bissau, Niamey, Brazzavile, Bamako, Lome, Yaounde, Libreville and Ouagadougo. The Country Manager said during the Ebola era, the Airline decided to discontinue operations to the Monrovia, Freetown and Banjul and would resume soon.

Airlines and the entire aerospace industry are dependent on a pipeline of young, appropriately educated talent who they can prepare, with bridging training, for careers in the sector. However, poor science, technology, engineering and mathematics learning – especially at schools in townships and rural areas - and the financial squeeze on South African universities and students is causing the pipeline to dry-up. “Without this talent pipeline, airlines and other aviation businesses in our region, specifically South Africa, face a calamitous future,” cautioned AASA CEO, Chris Zweigenthal, in his address to the association‟s 2017 annual general assembly. Africa‟s unprecedented population explosion is driving increased demand for air transport across the continent, with projected annual 5.7 percent average growth over the next 20 years. In parallel, around 20,000 new pilots, similar numbers of technicians and engineers together with a range of other professions will be needed to operate and supportAfrica‟s expanded fleet and to succeed the current generation of airline employees. “Transformation is a non-negotiable factor and we want to accelerate the pace at which we advance representation and diversity - not just in the cockpits and the executive suites, but in all roles across the industry. Frustratingly, our combined efforts, which include various industryfunded education outreach initiatives, are hamstrung by the low standards of basic education, especially in poor communities,” he added.

Airbus forecasts Middle East aviation growth despite tailwinds Aircraft maker Airbus has predicted 5.9 per cent average CAGR (compound annual growth rate) for Middle East airlines over the next 20 years, with inter-regional growth of 6 per cent slightly ahead of intra-regional and domestic growth (5.4 per cent). The upbeat predictions come as regional airlines continue to wrestle with pressurised yields and political issues. Speaking in Toulouse, Bob Lange, senior vice president, head of Market and Product Strategy for Airbus, said: “There have been short-term disturbances for all concerned but the growth you‟re losing temporarily doesn‟t disappear – people still travel. “We expect this will be a level of adjustment for a year or two before the Middle East comes rebounding back. The potential for Middle East economies to build away from oil and gas-based revenues to trade, tourism, commerce and manufacturing will continue.” Fuelled by 3.4 per cent real GDP regional growth, Airbus anticipates 2,526 new deliveries in the next two decades with single-aisle planes accounting for the lion‟s share (1.082), significantly more than demand for 402 Very Large Aircraft (VLA). Rome: British budget airline easyJet and German carrier Lufthansa both said Monday they have submitted offers for parts of Italy‟s ailing Alitalia. The stricken carrier said that it had received seven binding offers in all, without providing details. The easyJet and Lufthansa proposals will spark disappointment in Italy, which wants to sell Alitalia in one package to avoid mass job losses. The Lufthansa Group said it was after “only parts” of the global traffic network as well as European and domestic point-to-point business of the national carrier, which it would use to establish a “NewAlitalia”. EasyJet said it too was interested “in certain assets of a restructured Alitalia”, without providing details.
