The reborn AirAsia Japan will commence services on 29 October with a service from its Nagoya hub to Sapporo, two years after receiving its air operator's certificate. The carrier says in a statement that it will operate twice-daily on the route, which FlightGlobal schedules data shows it will compete against five other carriers, including Jetstar Japan, All Nippon Airways and Skymark Airlines. ―We are honoured to be the first airline to be based in Nagoya’s Chubu Centrair International airport and we are committed to connecting as many guests as possible at low fares to AirAsia's extensive network, as well as bridging communities and cultures for the benefit of the local economy,‖ says chief executive Osamu Hata. AirAsia holds a 49% stake in AirAsia Japan, while shareholders Rakuten, Octave Japan Infrastructure Fund, Noevir Holdings and Alpen hold the other 51%. This is the Malaysian budget carrier’s second attempt into the Japanese market, following the October 2013 breakdown of its joint venture with ANA Holdings. The shell of that first carrier was used to launch Vanilla Air shortly after. The new carrier was granted its AOC in October 2015, and had planned to launch services during the northern spring of 2016. The launch was however repeatedly delayed, and Jetstar Japan has in the meantime announced plans to start a base at Nagoya in 2018. Flight Fleets Analyzer shows that AirAsia Japan has two Airbus A320s in its fleet.

Airline Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Peter Bellew told the New Straits Times in an interview last week that no talks with any prospective partners were currently in the offing. ―In the next two years, if we get an investment from another carrier, that may significantly boost the overall value of the airline," he said. ―However, we are not open to approaches by other carriers at the moment.‖ Bellew also noted that the Malaysian carrier may also be more inclined to deal with low-cost carriers for a more detailed partnership concerning overseas markets. Malaysia Airlines was taken private in 2014 by the country's sovereign wealth fund, Khazanah Nasional Berhad, following protracted losses brought on by the MH17 and MH370 tragedies. In the years since then, Malaysia Airlines has undergone restructuring and cost-cutting as per the MAS Recovery Plan.

According to Reuters, in his report of the Parliament on Friday, October 13, Finance Minister Malusi Gigaba said the relief could be extended to late March 2019 on condition that he announces an equity injection into the ailing state-owned carrier when he tables the medium-term budget policy statement (MTBPS) on October 25. Last month, the Treasury was forced to draw on the National Revenue Fund (NRF) to pay off a ZAR1.8 billion rand (USD133 million) loan, owed by SAA to Citibank, that was due by September 30. Government is also considering various means to help recapitalize the carrier but has since reportedly abandoned plans to dispose of its 39% stake in Telkom valued at ZAR12.3 billion (USD909 million). According to BusinessDay, the national telecommunications firm announced on Thursday, October 12, that it had removed its cautionary notice regarding government's plan to divest itself of its shares. Lufthansa to swallow lion’s share of airberlin Berlin: Years of struggle for Germany’s second-ranked airline Air Berlin appeared close to an end Thursday, as airborne behemoth Lufthansa announced plans to buy more than half the bankrupt carrier’s planes. The deal has sparked controversy in the European aviation sector, with the German government facing accusations it helped steer the process under a plan to build the Frankfurt-based carrier into an all-conquering juggernaut. Germany’s largest airline will snap up some 81 of airberlin’s 144 aircraft and take on 3,000 of its 8,500 staff, Lufthansa chief executive Carsten Spohr said in Berlin, hailing it as a ―great day‖ for his company. Lufthansa is set to sign its deal with airberlin at noon local time (1000 GMT). Airberlin is ―continuing to negotiate today‖ with easyJet, the other bidder chosen for exclusive takeover talks with a Thursday deadline, a spokesman told news agency DPA. Spohr said that easyJet was interested in between 20 and 30 of airberlin’s medium-range aircraft. Lufthansa has yet to say how much it will pay under the deal, but Spohr told newspaper Rheinische Post Thursday that the group would invest €1.5 billion (Dh6.5 billion, $1.8 billion) related to the takeover. He added that 80 aircraft was the largest addition to Lufthansa’s fleet that competition authorities would accept. European authorities must now decide whether to give Thursday’s deal a green light, in a process that could take ―several weeks or months,‖ airberlin chief executive Thomas Winkelmann said last week. Bankruptcy proceedings In the meantime, the carrier will operate flights as a subcontractor for the buyers, as insolvency rules forbid it from operating flights on its own account after October 28.

Airberlin triggered bankruptcy proceedings in August after losing a cash lifeline from its biggest shareholder Etihad Airways. Its aircraft have been kept aloft by a €150-million ($178 million) emergency loan from the German government while details of the break-up were worked out. A crowd of German and international investors and competitors lined up after the bankruptcy was announced, with an eye not only on Air Berlin’s aircraft but also its coveted take-off and landing slots at the country’s crowded airports. In the race for exclusive talks, Lufthansa and easyJet reportedly beat out IAG — owner of Iberia and British Airways — and three bids of between €500 million and €600 million apiece from private investors. Irish low-cost airline Ryanair stayed out of the bidding as its outspoken chief Michael O’Leary denounced a German ―stitch-up‖ designed to favour Lufthansa. And Bavarian businessman Hans Rudolf Woehrl claimed the government was favouring the creation of a Lufthansa ―monopoly‖ by rejecting out of hand offers to take over airberlin whole. ―It’s right that carriers who haven’t been able to make ends meet are disappearing from the market,‖ Spohr told Rheinische Post, pointing to Britain’s Monarch, Italy’s Alitalia and now airberlin. Nevertheless, ―competition will intensify in Europe and worldwide,‖ he said, adding that he expects ―falling prices‖ for passengers in future. Ryanair Spohr also stressed that ―it’s in the German interest to have a strong national airline‖ with worldwide connections. Lufthansa also used a briefing paper earlier this month to take a swipe at Ryanair, arguing its complaints were ―an attempt to distract from their own problems‖. The Irish company’s chief operations officer stepped down this month after Ryanair was forced to slash thousands of flights up to March, mainly owing to a shortage of pilots. As bosses wrangle over their grand strategies for the sector, unions complain that many of airberlin’s staff face an uncertain future. Winkelmann dangled ―good job prospects for around 80 per cent of our colleagues‖ with Lufthansa and easyJet when the exclusive talks began. Airberlin pilots called in sick en masse in September in a protest against the lack of information, but they will benefit from a stripped-down recruitment process at Lufthansa — hungry for aircrew for low-cost subsidiary Eurowings. www.ainonline.com Transport Canada Reports First Collision of Drone, Airplane A drone struck a Skyjet airplane approaching a Québec City airport on October 12, marking the first such collision between a drone and a commercial aircraft in Canada, according to regulatory agency Transport Canada. The Skyjet airplane—a Beechcraft King Air 100, according to flight tracking site FlightAware—sustained minor damage after it was struck by a drone while inbound to Québec City Jean Lesage International Airport. The twin turboprop was carrying eight passengers on a flight from Rouyn-Noranda Airport in Quebec, according to media reports. ―This is the first time a drone has hit a commercial aircraft in Canada and I am extremely relieved that the aircraft only sustained minor damage and was able to land safely,‖ Canadian Transport Minister Marc Garneau announced on October 15. The transport agency was in contact with Skyjet, the airport, air navigation service provider Nav Canada and Québec City police, he said. Based at the Québec City airport, Skyjet Aviation is a charter operator that reports a fleet of 12 19-passenger Beechcraft 1900 D turboprops and smaller King Air 100 and 200s. In another recent first, a drone struck a U.S. Army UH-60M Black Hawk while it flew over Staten Island, New York, on September 21, damaging the helicopter’s main rotor blade, window frame and transmission deck. A motor and arm from the DJI Phantom 4 quadcopter were recovered from the helicopter, according to the U.S. National Transportation Safety Board, which is investigating the incident. In March, Transport Canada announced an interim rule that prohibits flying small drones for recreation within 5.5 km (3.4 miles) of an airport and within 1.8 km (1.1 mile) of a heliport. Violators could be subject to fines of up to $25,000 and/or prison, the agency said. ―Although the vast majority of drone operators fly responsibly, it was our concern for incidents like this that prompted me to take action and issue interim safety measures restricting where recreational drones could be flown,‖ Garneau stated. ―I would like to remind drone operators that endangering the safety of an aircraft is extremely dangerous and a serious offense.‖ Transport Canada reported receiving 1,596 drone incident reports to date this year, of which 131 ―are deemed to have been of aviation safety concern,‖ the agency said
